I genuinely think this speech is just as, if not, more important to hear than GW’s. The GW speech is absolutely powerful but in a more nihilistic way. Snake refutes GW’s claims about the digital age by saying we have the power of this current era to leave behind our mark and make sure information and human history are preserved, warts and all. Man, what a way to end a game. I love MGS2.
Funny how the snake speech videos have much less views then the GW ones, though I think the fact that snake's speech is both smaller in view count and length. Yet still resonates just as much with those who listen, makes it all the more powerful.

What i love about this is how much it juxtaposes the Speech between the AI and Raiden. Regardless of the implications of the the digital age and flaws of humanity. I feel the same way too. I don’t want to have kids, but there’s so much more to life than just that. There are ways to leave your mark on the world other than passing on your genes. That’s what I *live* for.
Just to answer the people who want to know the name of the piano piece that plays during this piece, it's called "Freedom To Decide" it plays during the second half of the song.
funny how after saying all this inspirational heart felt stuff in a conclusive way he goes on living and aging rapidly ultimately to have existential crisis at the end of metal gear 4 to lead to the same exact revelation.
God damnit Kojima. God fucking damnit. You took this iconic man, this man who is literally the VOICE of Metal Gear Solid, you took him and threw him away. There's nothing wrong with him, he's still alive, his voice is still the same, you just decided things "need to change." This voice is filled with meaning, and you will never find another person on this earth who will ever be able to recreate it. And you just threw it away. I love MGS. My favorite story of all time. But I will never forgive you for taking out the most iconic part of the whole series. It will never be the same again. It will never live up to a strong meaning as the others did. It's really sad.

If I worked in a charity shop and someone came in to donate some jeans, I would say, "life isn't just about passing on your jeans....." then give them this whole speech.
This game came out 19 years ago but I'm still watching it
_Life isn't just about passing on your genes. We can leave behind much more than just DNA. Through speech, music, literature and movies what we've seen, heard, felt, anger, joy and sorrow... These are the things I will pass on. That's what I live for. We need to pass the torch, and let our children read our messy and sad history by its light. We have all the magic of the digital age to do that with. The human race will probably come to an end some time, and new species may rule over the this planet. Earth may not be forever but we still have the responsibility to leave what traces of life we can. Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same thing._
You forgot to put "..." after "movies".

It's been almost twenty years since my first run through MGS 2 and that speech has stuck with me through so much.
This feels very relevant today. Our world is in an existential uncertainty. I hope it gets better and heals itself.
One of the most powerful and inspiring speech that I've ever heard
I used this speech to close my final for my English 2 course. It had to deal with analyzing the work of James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time. This speech got me an A+
I still hold this message near and dear to my heart.
This speech made me cry as a kid. It's motivated me to be the best person I can be for the future to be 100% honest.
@King Greed oh yeah, the piano is where I almost always cry.
DAVID HAYTER WILL FOREVER BE SOLID SNAKE
Snake: Building the future and keeping the past alive are one and the same
5 years later also Snake: WAR HAS CHANGED
As a man who isn't sure about having kids, it gives me comfort to know that there are other ways to leave your mark on the world. Looking back on it now, Snake's words made more of an impact on me than I thought.
I feel the same way too. I don’t want to have kids, but there’s so much more to life than just that. There are ways to leave your mark on the world other than passing on your genes. That’s what I *live* for.
This video... this speech is so relevant to the USA right now..
kinda crazy how this game took place a mere 2 month after 9/11
Honestly hits you right in the heart every time I hear this speech!
there will never be an amazing speech to a video game ending like this ever again with footage of new york in the early 2000s
Just used this video, with citation, on a research paper. Thank you 'Epic Videogame Playthroughs'!
Just fnished this game again so touching! Love this speech & just shows that MGS isnt just a game its about so many other things
Here in 2020.. Because this is the realist thing anyone has ever said
This game is a masterpiece in so many ways.
Im so glad someone finally uploaded this without the credits. The strongest message in all of mgs.
who's watching this masterpiece in 2024?
Just to answer the people who want to know the name of the piano piece that plays during this piece, it's called "Freedom To Decide" it plays during the second half of the song.
Years passing but he still right
I'm making this my favourite quote in my yearbook
Genes and memes
Kojima and solid snake
funny how after saying all this inspirational heart felt stuff in a conclusive way he goes on living and aging rapidly ultimately to have existential crisis at the end of metal gear 4 to lead to the same exact revelation.
right in the fucking feels
"Study the past, if you would define the future." - Confucius
Beating this game for the first time today and realizing it's 9/11 😮
The first speech I never fell asleep and the only speech that made me keep going
I want to walk around New York just listening to this and Can't Say Goodbye To Yesterday
God damnit Kojima. God fucking damnit. You took this iconic man, this man who is literally the VOICE of Metal Gear Solid, you took him and threw him away. There's nothing wrong with him, he's still alive, his voice is still the same, you just decided things "need to change."
This voice is filled with meaning, and you will never find another person on this earth who will ever be able to recreate it. And you just threw it away. I love MGS. My favorite story of all time. But I will never forgive you for taking out the most iconic part of the whole series. It will never be the same again. It will never live up to a strong meaning as the others did. It's really sad.
***** They pulled it off in MGS4, why not in 5?
***** And who voiced Solid Snake?
***** David has been SNAKE (not specifically Big Boss, or Solid Snake) for MGS 1 through 4, including the PSP titles. There is no reason to get rid of him. Make it at least one of the Snakes, but don't get rid of him entirely. And especially not in such a shitty way like Kojima did.
***** What's wrong with him voicing Snake, which he's fantastic at voicing all of them, in 5?
***** You don't... are you not... Okay, yes. I get it. Separate voices for the Snakes. OBVIOUSLY! but getting rid of David is still pointless!
I salute, you Solid Snake. I would even dream about becoming a Successor to you
If that's what you want... just don't fight a war that you don't have to fight, the only war worth fighting is life, because it is the only war in which you will be free to be who you are and fight for what you believe.
It's so crazy to think how relevant this monologue is in 2018
Could say the same thing for the entire game to be fair.
Used to be critical bout this. But I'm playing it now after completing it and the it brings back good times. A very complex & interesting story + gameplay. I've now rated this as one my favs. The relationship between Rose & Raiden kept going.
niko bellic: life is complicated
solid snake: life isn't about passing on your genes
To think games that hit this hard were on the PS2, just goes to show graphics and hardware ain't everything, Hideo is a very talented man, I'm just still unsure if I should ever try death stranding.
bruh this game still got me crying 8 years later
that's right snek, only have kids if you're ready
0:02 it's also about passing on your memes
ah so nostalgic this game...I remember when i first my got ps2 and this was the first game i played, this game was way ahead of its time.
"Keeping the past alive"
Tell that to youtube removing Hitler speeches.

People who is listening to this speech before the 2024 new year
⬇️
This shit made me start crying durring the first playthrough, I won't lie.
Recently played MGS2 and finished it. And man this speech really hit, just a lot to unpack with a game made in 2001 and it predicted so many problems we have today.
But Snake isn’t wrong with what he says. I guess that’s why it hit.
