Thanks for posting this. I have custom convertible with the 7.8 engine which has a spark plug mounted vertically and an FM magneto. I bought the machine 8 years ago because it had 4 attachments which I needed for my kohler engine gravely. So I am going through it this winter and seeing what the engine has to say about sitting under cover for years. This was a big help , hoping that I have some marks on the fm like the wico. By the way, I have a manual that I downloaded and you did it just like they said. The expert opinions from those snipers on You Tube that always pick away at the people who post things gets tiring. And your engine started too. Great job.

Big John, thank you for this video. After a day of frustration and a tired arm from trying to pull start I was about to throw in the towel. Then I found this video and after setting the timing as shown in the video it started on the first pull. Again thank you.

Thank you big john. I was given a 1958 LI which hasn't run in a decade. I went through carburetor and sediment bowl; and found that WICO wouldn't spark because the points were oxidized. It is producing a nice blue spark now. I cleaned and put a drop of oil on impulse pivot arm while it was on the bench. I will use your simple method and see no reason it won't start.

Thanks. That worked very well on my early 1960s LI.

I have never seen it done the way you just did it Big John ! I always wind the impulse coupling up at tight as I can by hand until its as tight as it can be without snapping . I bring it up to Top Dead Center and the back it down just a hair and that's where I tighten the coupling up at so it sparks just as it reaches TDC ! It is a pain in the ass doing it that way trying to hold the spring tension of impulse spring with one hand while tightening coupling nut with the other hand !Your method sure looks easy ,almost too easy .Lol . Where may I ask did you learn that method ? I am going to try it out for sure . I ve read the Old Manuals and they make the adjustment process seem like Chinese Algebra when you read them ! I ve seen You Tube videos showing me to do it the way I do it . So that's why I do it that way . I think I like your system better !

Never turn the magneto over without a spark plug, or something to 'absorb' the spark.... messes with the magnetism, or something internally on the magneto. Timing that way with a new, or nearly new magneto is according to the book, BUT with a well used and worn tractor one MUST use the TDC to time it rather than the line and the two dots, because a worn unit will not "discharge" at the same spot as a new unit does.

So when you get on tdc how do you know where to lock down on mag if not using dots on well worn machine? Sure it's in ball park one way or another-

Its just his tone of voice for Gods sake. And he's not saying "Waco" either. Clean your ears.
