- Join us for another Tech Thursday where as well as the focused subject of the month, David will also try and answer as many of your O-MD and OM System related questions as possible.

Thank you David! Wonderful and informative! Very good to see videos about the STF8. I have one myself. But it seems that not so many people use it. The OM Ambassadors are always using something else! I would like to see more “on field” videos about it!

"I will put my question here since my email to om support i got was really unbelievable! To start with i found out that there isn't a Dutch importer no more and all the questions are re-routed to Germany, with a very long waiting time before you get a answer.
I switched from my OMD-M1 mark III to the OM-1, for only one reason. I shoot mostly video and with the OM-1 we FINALY got 10 bit color, H265 HLG! We all waited for that a long time. HDR would have been better because it's more widely spread but still. Only to find out there are some serious bugs with that new camera. When editing video the last frame from each scene is shown as a 'freeze frame'. Wich cause every scene with a jumper. You have to edit every scene just to get that jumper out. For a video of 15 minute's (160 scene's) that gives you 30 minutes of extra work, beside the color correction. I have tried Final cut Pro X, adobe premiere, the problem exists in both. I wrote to your support in detail what happend and what the result was.
After 4 weeks i had to send a reminder cause i didn't get an answer. 3 week AFTER that i finally got my answer and "solution"....
Stop using final cut pro, that can't handle H265, what is a absolute lie since FCP was one of the first that DID handle H265. But that wasn't just it. Your support continues with " stop using 10 bit, stop using H265, stop using HLG." So WHY did this new camera came on the marked then?????
I really hope YOU will come with a satisfying solution or firmware update?"

Dave Smith. Hi Dave, if you set your camera, in my case an OM1, to mechanical shutter and your FL900R of FL700WR to TTL FP (high speed sync), you can shoot at very high shutter speeds, as the camera and flash are sync'd to high speed flash. I recently took a shot of a hoverfly at 1/2000, f8, ISO 1600 with flash. Obviously, flash distance falls off dramatically, but given that subjects for macro images are close to the lens/flash, it is not an issue.
For STF-8: are there different colored diffusors to mount in the market?
I have the 25mm Pro lens. Would this be the best for taking shots of the moon? I also have the 75-300mm (on your recommendation - great lens!) My camera is an EM-1 Mk III.
will this flash work with the new 90mm macro lens pls.
Is there any more information on the flash you used?
Hi David, I am new to the OM system cameras. I am using a OM D-M5 mk3 with a 60mm macro lens. You mentioned during the presentation, when using the focus stacking/bracketing to manually focus the subject, then use the bracketing function. But when try this with the focus set to manual, then the focus bracketing options in the menu are not available. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Rick - With the OM-D you should have AF set and then turn on Focus Stacking. Once its on, you can go ahead and switch to MF. I hope this helps! - David
Hi David, great video as always. Not sure if you will pick this up but I was wondering after a year or so now how the STF-8 Twin Macro Flash unit works with the 90mm F3.5 which I have, as it wasn’t out when this was made. I was wondering if this was the best one to use for insects in the garden. Thanks in advance.
Hi David - Great question. I do use the STF-8 with the 90mm when I want to go a little smaller than than my speedlite and diffuser setup. It works very well with that focal length. I just need to always remember that if I stack with flash, the STF-8 has a slightly slower recycle between shots that my FL700WR. I hope that helps! - David

Hi David, really helpful video. I own the same equipment: OM1, 60mm macro lens, STF-8 flash, but have an issue: the connection between the flash and the camera is often lost, if I rotate one of the dials the camera stops seeing the flash, the flash symbol in the rignt of the screen disappears and the flash doesn't fires. I noticed that if I rotate the head of the flash (there is a little movement possible) the connection restores and the system works flawlessly, so it seems a mechanical issue. Did you noticed something like this?
Hi Paolo - I haven't noticed this myself. Perhaps the connection lock isn't quite seated properly or the contacts on the flash need to be cleaned. It may be worth sending this for diagnostics if the problem continues :) - David S
Thank you David, i feared an incompatibility issue between the OM1 body and the STF-8, and your answer helped me a lot, now i sent my body and flas to the company who sold me the flash for diagnostic
@@paolofalco3580I’m having issues with my stf-8 also. Lots of greyed out menus won’t work at all with focus stacking and when I connect it to my computer for a firmware update it doesn’t even register under where it list the body the lens next to the flash is just blank.

How are those black threads on the diffusers supposed to be used? The manual is of no help, and it is not intuitive.
