- In the fascinating ancient Egyptian city of Luxor, marriage blossoms on the banks of the Nile where mature foreign women find love and companionship with local younger men. Could this be love ?
Sarannah feels she was given a new shot at life and can now re-live her youth. Moving to Luxor she met and married Hamdy, 30 years her junior. Madly and happily in love with Hamdy, all she wants to do is spend time with him and enjoy life. Her friend Nerchia met and married Khaled and it was joyous…for a while. Khaled felt he wanted children which the older Nerchia was not able to have, and he found a much younger 2nd Egyptian wife. Of course, this has led Nerchia to make some tough decisions. Abdel-Rahim, a local tour guide married with 2 kids, wants to connect with a foreign woman to help secure his future. Abdel, like many others, meets women online, and hopes to convince them to move to Luxor. It is through an online platform that he connects with an older German / American woman, Monica. After a few months of online romance, she falls for him, moves to Luxor and promises to take care of him. The film follows these three women as they leave their lives behind to travel to a mysterious new world; one that blurs the boundaries between business and romance.

Cannot understand the mindset of these women who in what should the best time of their life think they need a man. After my husband died when I was in my 50s I have enjoyed the most wonderful life travelling the world solo and at home living as I want and not having to answer to anyone. Absolute bliss.

I visited Egypt and was heartbroken seeing how animals are mistreated, neglected, exploited, and abused. Men there do not see women as equals. For these reasons I could never live there under any circumstances.

as a person that lived in Egypt for several years, i can tell you that the conversations that they have about these women are very disgusting and if they knew how Egyptian men really feel about them, they'd stay at home. but i've seen how desperate these desert princesses are for love so maybe they wouldn't care.

I read quite a lot of the comments and I realized that this otherwise very well-done documentary is confusing for most people, because the stories are intertwined, and we are shown each story chopped in little pieces, and probably not even in chronological order.
The description is also confusing because it mentions Nerchia as Khalid's wife, when in the documentary the Dutch lady is called Maria (please correct this!).
So the three couples are:
1. Scottish lady Sarannah, married to Hamdi some months ago. She's the one who doesn't give any money, her husband does have a job, and he spends the night with his other family downstairs.
2. Dutch lady Mariam, who left an unsuccessful marriage 35 years ago, was married to Khaled for 2,5-3 years. He married a younger wife to have kids and that's when she saw that he isn't the persone she thought he was, because he treated his Egyptian wife differently. He also sought to make changes to her shop and told her 'If you don't like it, you can leave". That's when she dumped and created a new shop.
3. German-American lady Monika (the one whose face was blurred). Victim of an online scam.
Now what is not clear is that the man called Khaled (Maria's ex husband) is very similar to the one who is with Monika. The one who is with Monika is the one talking in the car about his marriage to an Egyptian wife who he thought would give him "a crypt with a treasure" and instead only gave him 10 children. I think he's a different person, but his name is either not given or I haven't caught it. His face is thinner than Khaled's and his beard-line is different.
It would be nice to put some captions on who is speaking every time. Maybe not all of the times, but at least at the beginning.

The relationship of Sarannah and Hamdi seemed rather OK to me, as it wasn't mainly about money, they are not lying to each other. Hamdi said he can discuss with her about "deeper" topics, she is kind of a soulmate to him.... On the other hand she says she feels young with him, you can see that she feels like a woman and she enjoys it...
The other relationships described here, seem kind of wrong and delusional to me...
Someone stated Sarannah does not give money but you heard Hamdi tell about becoming more well known, living in that lovely home obviously in a great section of the city, driving a good car, etc. Where did he come by these luxuries if not from Sarannah?

Thank you for the clarification. To your point #1, does Hamdi support Sarannah? To me, it just doesn't make sense and I don't think Sarannah is being very honest. It seems like Hamdi has enough people to support and she seems demanding of his time. Also, find it strange that she has absolutely no connection with anyone else in the house, even his children.

He has not this empathy or not able to hear what I have said... We wrote, because I needed the photos from trip. But the same slang and mind. He said he's single. And at home I found out, he is married... No Reaktion, no sorry no emathathy as I wrote that I found it out. Very sad this men. My friend got played by an Egyptian man. She was 72 and he was 27. I tried to tell her but she thought he was different, too. In the end he used her to get his Greek citizenship and took off. Happens a lot.
I lived next door to a woman in her 60s, she got married to an Egyptian man in his 20s. 2 years or so later she found out he was having an affair with a woman in a block of flats in the next street and she was pregnant with his kid!
I can’t feel pity for her. How on earth an elderly lady thought that a man in the prime of his life would be attracted to her?

What a crazy mixed up world. For all Hamdy’s declarations of love, I never once saw him look into Sarranah’s eyes. I feel very sorry for the Egyptian wives, although maybe they are better off having their wife-beating husbands away for months at a time.

Interesting documentary. I don't understand how Maria can think that her partner was rude when she should have clearly been able to see the motive behind his wanting to be with her. And these women certainly know that these much younger men want to have children! There's really nothing you can have in common with a man 40 when you're 80 because he's literally young enough to be your grandson. It is as distasteful to me as 80 year old men with 40 year old women or even 65 year old man with 40 year old women. There is really nothing in common. And the driving force is obviously money.
The other woman, Savannah, was much more down to earth. There was no money involved in her relationship with him, his wife and kids live downstairs, he has the young wife, but he also has the interesting conversations, companionship etc. with her. She knows what the situation is, he also knows, they enjoy each other's presence in their lives and seem happy. She is even reconciled with the possibility that it won't last. She seems to me a very aware person.

This reminds me of loads of girls I used to know in Dubai in the 80's. They used to say the same thing until they got beaten up, sexually abused and he ran off and got married to a local woman without them knowing. And if they had kids, they went to his mother. Lovely chaps!
These men are extremely patient and are just waiting for people like her to die.
In the US, a story I know of a man of Lebanese descent who worked for a wealthy man also of Lebanese descent. This caretaker took care of everything on the property, grounds, maintenence etc., and he got very close to his employers wife.
His employer died years later and just a few months afterwards married the wealthy widow. The former caretaker later went to the cemetery where his employer is buried at, got on his knees and touched the grave and said "Thank You, thank you for everything and now everything you once owned is mine". This was not a hearted thank you, this was his way of telling the deceased he won the game and never liked the guy although the employer thought of him like family and trusted him.
These men are crooked, even when they become westernized you can NEVER trust them. The thieving mindset goes on in perpetuity. They will always see the westerner as submissive and weak even if you get along with them.
If the women who go to Egypt to search for love would partner up with the men who go to Thailand to search for love, there would be far less misunderstandings and heartbreak. Of course, this will never happen as the majority wants to be with a young and attractive partner even if (in most cases) the love is fake and they have to pay for it.

Thoroughly dishonest representation and uneven treatment in these kinds of documentaries. Men always portrayed as sinister and exploitative while females shown going abroad with selfless, pure, thoroughly justified motives (and then being "tricked" by sinister, exploitative young males)

What a great documentary! Very interesting and open-minded. It"s not always easy to understand why these women make these choices but we shouldn't judge. We all looking for something in this world. Let's just hope that they don't fall into thiinking that this is love..

A warning to everyone on my tour of Morocco one of the things the tour guide advised against was just this.
I think both of these women are beautiful, brilliant and brave. I think they both know what they’ve let themselves in for and stand their ground if they don’t like how the men treat their other wives. I couldn’t move to another country let alone a country with such cultural differences. Hamid put it perfectly. They marry their cousin, they don’t have anything in common and he loved his older wife( who I thought for 79 is a stunning woman!) due to communicating and talking, he never did this with his younger wife, which was sad. I just thought it showed two women( forget their ages) living life the way they want to and I can only praise them for doing what makes them happy. I've just got back from Luxor and I met Khaled while I was there, at his shop - Sandouk. I have to say, he comes across as charming, educated and funny - not like most of the other Egyptian men you meet. I am surprised to find out about the things revealed in this film!
This documentary is really interesting and I think it should be mandatory viewing for all the older ladies out there looking to find love in Egypt!!

one of my ex colleagues was married to a lady from the Netherlands 25 years older than him. He came to the Netherlands, started his own business and once he hit the 5 years of marriage (that's when you get Dutch passport), he left her so brutally. Then we found out that he actually got married to a younger lady in Egypt meanwhile being married to a Dutch lady. Most of the times these guys are either looking for money or residence permissions abroad.

If you feel lonely, this is an internal inner child wound issue, nothing from outside can heal that. You need to go within and find the root, and be fulfilled by yourself first. Exploiting those in poverty to cure your loneliness is very unfair and often backfires. You can make good friends and help people in need to heal yourself also. You don't have to sleep with them and demand love, which is something you can't even find within yourself so you can't expect if from others. Heal your inner child by going within first and all the neediness will dissipate.

What we see in this film happens a lot. Some women do not have to go to Egypt, some go to Cuba, lika a friend of mine, 58 years old. She went there to take salsa lessons and got madly in love with her salsa teacher, a good looking man of 28. They had a torrid relationship. She arranged and payed a lot of money for him to come to Europe. But he never came, he had met another woman and he is living now in Denmark.
