I felt that “wait what he actually likes rounding??” deep in my soul and my tired feet
I am a radiologist myself and I would totally recommend it. I mean all these night shifts during residency were really grinding my gears but now I am a specialist, can work whereever I want and can finally leave work on time. And I earn proper money. And still I could do something else if I get fed up. So getting through training is tough yeah, but it gives you experience, certain skills and more freedom in the end. And oh yeah one of the most striking things in radiology is not working on a ward and not having to do rounds. I never heard anyone enjoying until now
When he said he loved rounds I knew I couldn’t relate to him haha. As an MS3 rotating in IM, I can’t wait to be done.
I'm a med student from Argentina and radiology is one of my possible specialties to choose when finishing my MD. Also you don't have to deal with peoples lives, complications, treatments... etc. You only have to inform the study (CT, MRI, etc....) and the treatment desition is finally made by another doctor... I like that...

Time isn’t “wasted”- they’ve gained insight, wisdom, clarity. I’m back in college in my 30’s. I don’t feel like I wasted my 20’s. I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career. Now I do. 🤷♀️
Pretty much the definition of time waste. It dont take a decade plus to know what you wanted to make a decision. I've did the same thing but without any guidance, I now know what I do as a career. Just because you grew wiser and more insightful does not mean it was not a waste of time. looking for humble ways to redefine circumstances is what people who neglect time a lot do, thus they make justifications to make it sound not so bad. Just call it for what it is and show people how to not squander their time.
@@appollo1826 What people do as a career does not have define them. For someone to put on hold a career does not mean they put on hold their whole life. I think perhaps we shouldn’t live to this rigid time table to define a successful life. Ultimately it’s our habits and routines that set up a happy life.

As a neonatal nurse I can fully relate and agree. Medicine and the healthcare field in general does take a lot of time out of your life but at the end of the day I believe with everything in me a nursing career was what I was called to do. In my 11 years of nursing I have experienced burnout especially after Covid and I’ve had to take breaks in my career. Nursing is a little more flexible that being a physician due to the fact with can always change our specialty. Which is what I did. I went from being a hospice nurse to a neonatal nurse. Love your videos Dr. Cellini and I couldn’t agree more with what you said on this topic!

I am currently in the hospital. Due to a infection in my tunneled PICC. The hospitalist assigned to my care is a young guy. Early to mid 40s. He told me the other day, that Friday will be his last day at UAB Hospital. Saturday he is packing his things and moving to North Carolina and quitting medicine.
Interesting. Scary times, we need higher salaries or whatever to keep enough people in this field.

Tbh, Dr. SantiagoAQ was (and ofc still is) one of my biggest role models. Although I firmly believe other people shouldn't ricochet your trajectory in life, watching his video about quitting medicine made me rethink my goals significantly, considering that I sometimes felt like a fish out of water in this world of medicine!
Thank you for this video, Dr. Cellini; it's amazing to have new perspectives. Medicine isn't easy (and neither is any career you have to put work into). At the end of the day, we choose our own metric :)

I'm glad this conversation was brought up. I went through this same existential agnst through my MD PhD training. Man, it was really, really hard at times. I had the same arguments in my head, "Why do research? I could just go into medicine and earn a lot more money. This is bullshit!". But I'm so thankful I didn't give up and I went through that period in my life. After entering medicine, I realized I had so much more freedom and value I could provide people because of my research background and, honestly, just being able to write papers, think, and learn.
As I now begin to transition to residency and (hopefully) match, I've come to the conclusion that the main issue with most physicians is the lack of having extra skills that can give them value or ways to be okay with making less money. I actually had a researcher and a physician give me excellent advice about how leveraging your money can be a great way of buying your time. Insteand of making more money in the clinic, you can take a pay cut in that area but invest in research or other pursuits that can make up for the lost income and then some. It sounds counter intuitive, but it really showed me how it's easy to feel the need to be like everyone else or to feel this need to somehow earn more money. Truly, I rather earn less and still be happy if it means I feel better about my job, still help patients, and pursue my other interests that I can leverage for professional or financial growth.
It's been a long journey and I'm still learning a lot as I go through. But my main advice for people is not to rush the process or feel like you have to be like everyone else. If you want to be more balanced but see less patients, do it man. Be happy and focus on the quality of your care than simply how much you can bill. Use your other interests to leverage other opportunities that can help you succeed on your own terms. I know this isn't easy for every specialty to do, but it does give a different perspective on finding ways to leverage your money to give you time in medicine. Keep strong everyone.
"It depends on the specialty you are in". Exactly!!!! A medical student is not guaranteed a match in their desired specialty. Some are forced into primary care. I recommend an Engineering degree. There are so many other options with that degree. Business, purchasing, financial advising, etc. You can work from home sometimes and make great money. Many businesses close down between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Your company will pay for your Master's degree. Don't go into medicine unless you have a passion for the career. With all do respect Dr. Cellini, you don't have children yet. Your priorities will change greatly if you do.
but i have no interest in engineering. many jobs in medicine have room for children. basically any specialty where i can work in a clinic or have shift work
I probably ran though all or most of your UA-cam videos in like under two weeks great stuff man what were the difficulties during college courses and did you have to do a 3 to 7 year residency rotation at a hospital or is it shorter or longer then that?
Santiago would have been an amazing doctor, but he's also a fantastic educator and I will continue watching his content to improve my med school studies. 100% recommend his channle

Hey great video! However, this is just a production note. I noticed that you had a pulsing pattern on the upper left corner of the video. I have noticed this in my wife's videos. There are certain lighting settings especially with cheaper ring lights that cause waves of lighter and darker light to appear in your videos. I think it has to do with how these ring lights work since they seem to just flicker at faster or slower speeds to control the brightness rather than turning some of the light sources completely off. I have found that increasing the light intensity from them (and possibly slowing your camera shutter speed) can stop the pulsing pattern from occurring. Once again, great video and I'm glad to have you back.
I'm currently just over the first 6 months of residency in Family Medicine. It has indeed been ROUGH, and the thought of just giving up has crossed my mind several times... Just as it did during med school. That said, I'm still here, still alive. A certain momentum carries me through.
Personally, I don't see myself quitting anytime soon. That said, I do wonder... Because I've seen people just up at quit at certain points of their training, be it med school, or residency. What ARE the options someone who just graduated med school has if they said "ah screw it. That's it for me?" I figure there must be other stuff you can do with that very expensive degree.
He sounds just like he did it have it in him and it's wonderful that he did deep soul searching which many people do not do.
Hi Dr. Cellini, I'm starting the MD here in Australia in 2 weeks time. Your videos have been hugely inspirational to me, I'm really considering radiology as a career option! Prior to that was anaesthesia (I am also a pharmacist so I thought the drugs/physiology combo would be cool) but the idea of being able to read these super cool studies from home but also do really quick and effective (and cool!) procedures like in interventional radiology can give me that hands on fix that I think I'd love. Thanks for not throwing in the towel despite your youtube success, it's really nice to see someone stick with medicine among all the online negativity around the profession (which I've noticed seems to mostly come from juniors??). Keep it up :)

I understand his POV, but in my opinion, you should at least finish before you back out. You worked hard to get into medical school and to learn medicine. I would at least try and finish med school and residency before quitting. At least if you regret it you can go back as an attending or some sort of academic position.
he is actually a graduated doctor. here in colombia you can work afeter medschool without an specialty the salary is miserable but yo can do it. and yes, i am a subcriber from his channel and i really do not understand what is he doing, and I think is a bad move form my POV. but as dr cellini says if medicine is not making him happy he has to do something about it.

I don't know about Bogota, but I live in Medellín and know an English Speaking general practice doctor who caters to foreigners and she does very well for Colombian standards. Seems like something like that could be a great use of both his medical license and English skills.

I think you would miss working in the medical field if you did YT full time. And things change all the time… for instance, used to people started up their businesses through instagram and now those people say they only get 10% of the hits they used to get. Platforms change all the time and YT could be replaced at any time by something else. So there would the question of sustainability.
In colombia student debt is real, but not as much as in USA it depends the university you go and in my case my debt is really small for now. what I do not understand is the work he already puts into going to USA. that path is hard AF from colombia and he managed to do it and in the end he justs quits to do youtube is just something hard to understand.
He briefly explained that he would live comfortably in Colombia with what he makes off of YT and also to be frank residency and training to become a physician in the US is grueling, time away from family and friends played a big part in his decision.
I am a third year undergrad student trying to get into medical school for the next application cycle. The goal is diagnostic radiology. I'm nervous that I'm getting myself into something I can't handle, I have no backup plan. Radiology has always interested me, I actually looked at my brother's pelvic 3D CT with an acetabullar and pubic rami fracture today, it was pretty cool, and it always gets me excited. I want to have good work life balance, I want a family, to travel, to have a life that isn't solely medicine. I really hope the sacrificial years are worth the years of adventure I will eventually get.
Well luckily radiology is the best for work life balance. Med school will be tough and residency is pretty manageable other than call. Afterwards it’s a great balance though

Dr can you tell me do you or maybe any surgeon doctors more, so you know do gardening, because no matter what gloves I wear after a few hours in the garden, I always have trouble getting my hands pristine clean, especially when you get staining on them too.
Too many people choose medicine for prestige and financial compensation but are very taken back by the grind and toxic dynamics of healthcare. Medical school admissions are plagued by the same questions that students have fine tailored answers too. I am guilty of moving into medicine for some of the "wrong" reasons as well. I think physician assistants do a good job of really emphasizing clinical exposure prior to admission to see if people actually want to do this. With the advent of monstrous student loans, and long hours in residency to get to the end goal, you will be pushed to the edge no matter if you are radiology or if you are in general surgery, residency and medical school will make you question yourself several times over and the truth will come out on what you actually value in life. It's better to try to discover this prior to coming into medicine.
I think your viewpoint is correct about decision making, however, he seems to lack focus and certainly lacks the passion one needs to practice medicine.
I just feel like the whole process of applying to medical school is designed to ensure that people that understand the amount of sacrifice it takes to become a physician get into medical school if you quit medical school it simply wasn't for you (and that's okay) and you weren't meant to be a doctor.

Depends on hours and how much work you have to do outside of actually being at work…charting, phone calls, etc

@@emeksb4823 Generally speaking, family medicine physicians have some of the worst lifestyles and lowest pay. However, as has already been said, there are choices. A VA FP dr is going to have a better life-work balance than the new guy in a non-physician owned for profit practice. Locum tenens work pays well and gives one opportunities for a better lifestyle. Part-time employment has already been discussed; you'll make less than most physicians, but more than many other hard working folks. Keep your educational debts in mind when choosing your specialty.

I have a video idea for you, because this is a burning question for me. How do doctors handle retirement? Is there a way to find some sort of position as a doctor where I'd qualify for a pension, and not just a Roth-IRA or whatever else is dependent on how much I put in? Something along the lines of 'when you retire, you're eligible for x% of your salary from here on out.' Because so many other jobs are pension eligible, but I don't think most doctor positions are. I hate the idea of retiring at 65 but somehow my retirement savings running out if I don't have a passive income set up.

I admire you very much what is your advise in my case, the work life balance in germany is way better than in the USA the salary is way less but I guess nothing is perfect.
I actually saw his video not too long ago with my mom lol I thought it was interesting how he came to his decision but I was kind of under the impression that he still works as a physician in Colombia. He just works less hours because he says he has UA-cam for passive income.
I want to job shadow the radiology department but a requirement is being fully vaccinated , I’ve received one dose and experienced odd side effects that still bother to this day and have been hesitant to get second dose. Any thoughts on what I can do ?

Wasn't his whole youtube channel based on him scoring 272 on Step 2? He has put his NBME score report on several thumbails.
And now he is quitting? Something similar to Jubbal, but at least he started residency. However, I would be very disappointed to see this guy judging and commenting on other residencies and doctor lifestyle and all that stuff, just like Jubbal did, because neither of them do actually have any first hand experience what is like to do the whole road till becoming board certified. Jubbal quitted residency and recently made ranking of other specialities, which is absolute BS.
Give advice about steps and match, sure, you have a credible reason to be listen to, but I guess this is a valid reason to be smart about anything else in life these days.

Quitting seems a bit extreme and not necessarily a financially sound decision. There are doctors who don't see patients directly. Some Drs work for law firms or disability insurance companies and review medical information. Some work for employers and review reasonable accommodation requests. Some work in research labs. It seems like a short sighted and impulsive decision.

I don't understand where he is coming from. 4 years of college, then 4 years of med school , then 4 or 5 years of residency before you have a real job that hopefully isn't more than 60 hours a week. 12 or more years after high school before you can celebrate your accomplishment. You didn't know this before you started ?
I agree. I did this and now doing 4 more years of subspecialty.. being a doctor is a lonnng road
I had to stop watching because I could not tolerate that whiny person's complaints. Good thing he quit before starting to actually touch patients... Any meaningful work will take time out of your life and like you say Michael, it is having a good work/life balance that is important. I now work from home 4 days per week/10h per day so I can have 3 days off in a row and have not regretted it, great work/life balance and I do not regret all those years of vet school and residency (and the right choice of residency: Clinical pathology!).
Life is about being happy being content. It's not you tubes fault. Everyone is responsible for their own life their decisions. Doc if u commit to just 1 video a week u can be very successful. To say 2 is a lot. Than all u do will be working. I say go for 1

life is work. most people don't like their work. 95% of my patients work challenging, low paid, tough jobs. stupid to just throw away a medical career. you can work part time in even a good quality of life speciality. all these people will regret this in 10 years. medicine can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be once you become an attending.

I always wonder about these people who gain watches on UA-cam because they are in a specific career who then decide to quit that career to pursue UA-cam. Doesn't that impact how many people watch? I think after awhile that person's content would not be as valuable because, for example, you didn't work through the pandemic and haven't been in a hospital with the changed rules since. Or you aren't as up-to-date on what a specific corporate career is doing.
Of course, that person could change their content to something else, but wouldn't that be like starting over? I don't know, seems scary to me in terms of earning potential.
I thought maybe you were off on vacation in a nice warm spot, golfing and spending your you tube money. I look forward to your humor.

Your statement about ' could I make the same off youtube as I would as a radiologist' needs a huge caveat... for how long? How many years will you be able to work as a radiologist, and how many years do you think your youtube channel would generate a radiologist's salary?

Another example of a generation who are half-hearted in their pursuits. I swear a lot of these people are looking for this golden career but there is no such thing in the field of life. This work-life balance crap is made up of terms for a generation of people who dont want to commit. They could be hard workers and smart but fickle at the sign of hard work because their so-called passion is just as important as their career. Please, before making a 7-plus to over a decade commitment look at the pros and cons (especially the cons) of the thing you want to do and ask yourself if is it the right fix for me. I feel there are a lot of people with a similar or worst mentality at a lower-level field with no direction and we need direction due to current and future economic issues. This is not a time to be fickle with your decision. Make a decision and commit to that decision. No matter where you go with your talents, there will always be cons to that field or career, so choose wisely.
When you don’t have a family to take care of, you can afford to take a gamble on being a UA-cam star. But at the end of the day youtube is a phase just like MySpace, Snapchat, TikTok… technology always advances. Medicine will always be around.

this is dumb. who in america can afford to quit medicine after taking on massive debt other than the incredibly privileged?
What it comes down to is the fact that most people would never ever admit that the reason they chose medicine is for the money. Nothing wrong with that since we live in a capitalist country. But admitting this fact is unseemly and greedy but I will never be convinced otherwise. Just imagine the reaction from the med school interview board if you told them that the reason you wanted to become a doctor was to make a ton of money. I flirted with the idea of going to med school in the early 70's as a young man. Back then Mexican-American undergrads were strongly being recruited into the professions and the elite graduate schools. Everyone gave noble and great sounding reasons to justify their decisions but not one, not one ever said that money ever entered the decision. That being said the golden days of medicine are long gone. Of course people will always need medical care but to me the price and the culture can be toxic. Look at the British NHS to see where the US is headed and tell me that those medical professionals are the outliers. The pandemic only brought this to the surface - it was always there. Whenever you offer "free" medical care and access to all there are only two ways to dispense this limited resource and the laws of economics state that you can use pricing or rationing - there is no other way to allocate this limited resource. And that is the reason that socialized medicine burns people out. Yet after investing so much time and effort I can readily understand why an MD would stay with the choices they have made. Time cannot be recouped. As a senior citizen I can honestly say that my tombstone will not say, " I wish I had spent more time at the office". "Nuff said.......
It's so insane to me that running a physician/medical field-related youtube channel potentially pays more than being an actual practicing physician. "Why did you go to medical school?" "Well to make UA-cam videos from the perspective of an actual doctor, duh!"

he did do the work… he literally graduated medical school. he’s done tons of research and even got a scholarship into medical school so he has no loans liz he chose to stop because he didn’t want to do it anymore simple. if ur calling him lazy than you clearly have no idea who this guy is

What a waste to society. To his own life personally? I don't know. I won't watch the chanel of someone who quit. Before even doing residency. What's he got to offer of value? I was almost a doctor? One video & I'm over him.
“what a waste to society” this is why ppl in med school have such high suicide rates because comments like this make them feel failures for not wanting to pursue a career they no longer love. if you watched this man’s channel you realize that he is pursuing youtube to focus on educational videos that he enjoys making. woulf you rather have a bitter doctor who doesn’t want to be there or someone who is passionate about their job and wants to see you and help you. by realizing where his true passions are and not forcing himself into a job he’s living for himself. when he’s about to die, what’s gonna bother him is not how much society loves him but how much he loved what he was doing throughout his life.
if you watched the video you would realize he did not quit because medicine was too hard. he quit because he didn’t want to commit most of his time to medicine as his dream specialty would have lead him to do. he was an extremely successful student and knows he would have made it through residency, he just didn’t want to. which is his perogative and doesn’t make him a waste
