  • Talk by Prof. Tammy Steeves - "Partnering with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities to improve conservation outcomes"
Abstract: "My research team is privileged to engage in conservation genomic research for culturally significant species at risk that, when appropriate, includes Indigenous and local relationships with place. In this plenary, I will provide an overview of our research, with an emphasis on two overlapping topics: (1) Mitigating the genomic impacts of small population size in threatened birds endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand; (2) Informing the conservation management of threatened endemic freshwater fish and invertebrates that is responsive to the needs and aspirations of local Indigenous tribes. In the former, relationships are built with relevant tribal representatives, in parallel to treaty partner relationships between them and the Crown. In the latter, partnerships built on mutual trust and respect enable co-created research that seeks to grow capability and capacity among all partners. From there, I will briefly share some ideas for researchers who wish to engage with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities as a critical first step towards co-created research that includes both Western and place-based knowledge."
