The same 1968 GMC pickup as in the previous video now with the 478 V-6 engine installed and 3" inch dual exhaust using the same Walker heavy duty straight through design mufflers.
Nice looking truck, my hands hurt just thinking about another restoration. But u did her good, kept her looking sharpe without cutting or modifying her. I think 67-72 were absolutely the best years for these trucks.
..exactly!...the only things I would change if it were mine, is I'd go back to the grill being polished aluminum, not black...paint the "GMC" letters on the tailgate, probably white, and switch the black wheels to some 10" wide stock-style steelies painted either white or body color with stock chrome dog dish hubcaps..that's just me...:)
Update, now that I have a gear vendor overdrive unit installed, the best fuel mileage I have attained is 15.5 mpg and I average 14-15mpg. I could still use a little more gearing so I'll probably switch to a set of 3.55 gears I have at some point.
+noshsreqd that gear vendors overdrive is an awesome investment I drive a 1984 F350 as my daily driver right now and i tow a very large travel trailer with it as well ,,factory gearing was .410 final drive I added a gear vendors ovrdrive to it and added 4MPG right off ,, it so impressed me that i changed the rear axle gears to .355 further increasing my highway fuel mileage ,,I am running a 6 speed manual which is adapted from a 99 F350 diesel truck,,, my engine is a mildly built turbocharged 478 big block ,510HP at 2800 rpm 710 #/FT at 2400 ,,cruising at 70mph on the highway engine RPM is just over 1200,when in double OD , barely enough RPM to keep the turbo producing boost ,, with the addition of the 355 gears and the gear vendors overdrive I am getting an amazing 21mpg highway with no load ,, and still manage a healthy 11 highway and 9 in the mountains towing my camper which weighs a very healthy 16,000 pounds ,,,, my mother laughs at me when we go places as a family cause I'd rather drive my 22ft long battleship than cram into her 2008 jeep liberty with the rest of the family ,, and it gets the same mileage as my truck
VinnyMartello yep it's pretty good ,, it can get even better with the right gearing and the right tuning,, my ford gets 21 average on the highway ,with the same size engine only its a V8
W.T. ……………..sounds like every parts store I went in had a piston on the counter with cigarettes burning in it , brings back good memories !!!! wait maybe they were bad would not have been there if I had not broke something ?????
That is a beautiful truck for you to be very proud of. You've done a meticulous job of making it nice & clean. Congrats. I'm currently pumping up the power level on my 250 I6, a 74 engine in my 81 4wheel drive. Love the old stuff.
I never was around the gassers but remember the 478 Toro-flo diesels in the tandems well. Good old engines. Had a G-model Prentice knuckle boom loader with a 5x3 in it.
This thing was built so well. Ford made good strong trucks back in the day too. But these trucks were very well made. I'll bet if someone brought one of these trucks to my shop, I could still align it. I used to own a GMC V6 with a granny gearbox. You could walk with it as it drove. About a mile per hour.
Glad that the 478s have found really nice homes ,love the 63 , never was a big fan of 67 to 72,to much 64 to 67 gm midsize styling ques for my taste. I love the v 6s ,to many Chevy engines in bays that should have v 6s . Thank you for keeping these great engines alive .
This video should break the interwebs very soon. People are going nuts about vintage 6 cylinders right now. And you sir have one of the biggest v6 gassers ever made. Thanks.
I have a Toyota FJ40 with a 351 V6 that I installed about 20 years ago. It stalls at 250 RPM and breaks axles at 350 RPM! With a 500 RPM idle. I have dreamed of having the 478 but this is the first one that I have seen. I pulled the exhaust manifolds off of a 402 with a rod out the side (the largest I have personally found).
kennethrobinson11231-you are right on the money with the 4 bbl carb.-don't know much about the v6 here in particular but years ago I took the 2 bbl off a 302 Ford-replaced the intake with a 4 bbl one off a '64 Comet -put on a Holley 4 bbl -doubled my mileage on casual driving and performance(with headers-dual exhaust was amazing
This damn thing sounds like a v8 on the idle! Never knew there was big blocks v6’s gm thats pretty awesome! Especially a 478 v6 is bigger than the 454 v8 its pretty impressive!
I rebuilt a 478 years ago for a customer , only one I ever saw . Seen several 305s and 351s and a couple of the 702 V12s . I have always wanted to find one and do a project around it .
There are still some kicking around out there, usually see them on craigslist, quite often still running in a truck. I've put 50,000 miles on mine now and still love it, I always think GM missed the boat not utilizing the 401 and 478's in pickups, they would have ruled the road back in the day.
Great sounding truck! I once put a 330 oldsmobile and automatic transmission in a similar truck (68) and tossed the 307 "cam eater special" . It was way easy and also good great fuel economy! Great video!
Always loved the big block v6s. Used to have a old as dirt GMC dump truck with a 305 or 351 V6 cant exactly remember. It eventually got so worn out it got scrapped.
I just bought a 1969 GMC bus 35 foot with the 478 v6 with a 5 speed manual with granny low rear engine pusher that has been converted to a motorhome in the 1990s needs some interior fixing go through the systems make sure everything is working engine needs a tune up but other than that I drove it home bought it for $2000
@@17shdqkaixc5bkiye7 not too bad got the interior fixed now and the drivetrain pretty much done all what I have to do now is put a solar system in a generator and replumb the water piping and put an on demand water heater in and put a new bed and some furniture in it then it will be pretty much done
That motor must pull great in that pick em up truck. I drove a 1971 gmc single axle semi tractor with that exact same motor... 5spd with a 2spd axle. Fun to drive if pulling an empty trailer... put a lil weight on her and you needed all 10 speeds. Would run 55mph and think it was turning upwards of 4000rpm if I remember correctly. Beautiful job on her.
I had a 1979 GMC 2500 High Sierra that had stock smog 350/Turbo350 and 3.73 gears. Swapped in a 1967 L-68, 400 up 427 w/ Tri Power carburetors. After some tinkering with jetting, ignition timing and secondary carb springs from Holley, and a Turbo 400 w/low stall converter and shift kit, I GAINED 2 MPG, from 12 to 14, AVERAGE. That was 1981. Could probably get closer to 20 with EFI and overdrive.
Wow, if that had another 2 cylinders to make it a V-8 it would be nearly 600 cid. I presume that the horsepower isn’t what it’s all about, but the torque is where it’s at. Nice clean install, thanks for the video.
WOW this is awesome!! I've been way into these GMC engines ever since I first learned about them and if I had one, I'd do it almost exactly like this. Well done, sir... this is beautiful.
Very nice. GM also made a 432 of the same series V6 and both are torque generators for sure. For all of those saying it needs more carburetor, it would totally depend on the application and intended use. I think for this application and use the carburetor on it is a very good choice. Nice truck (s).
The 432 is a 401 with a 478 crankshaft. The carb on this setup is great for low end needs, but this engine would take a 4 barrel No issues. The 500 cfm 2 barrel is a good addition if you Don't want to machine the manifold for a 4 barrel.
Military Chevy I agree, but a 500 cfm 2 barrel is better than a500 cfm 4 barrel. Both flow 500 and the transition between 2 and four barrels is non existent on the 2 barrel. Or better yet (but not street friendly) is a 1 barrel like a preditor carb.
mikeshotrodshop True, But I wasn't thinking of a 500 vs 500. I was thinking 750 4 barrel. lol My 305E has a 600 eddy 4 barrel on it. Mileage went up because I am cruising on Primaries and it pulls hard once the secondaries kick in. Whereas with a 2 barrel mileage would probably stay the same as your just Adding more fuel and air. With the 4 barrel your adding more fuel and air, but the extra fuel comes in when the secondaries open. But who cares about mileage right? lol
Beautiful job all the way around. I just got a 68 C1500 with its original 351E V6 and 4 speed manual trans. MYine has dual exhaust added also but not as nice as your setup lol. Great job!
If you put a 6V-71 blower on that, you'd have one of the coolest trucks ever. You could run maybe 4 psi to keep from stressing the engine much and keep heat low, but still have a brutal amount of torque. Then the 3.55 gears you wanted wouldn't feel any less powerful.
My present fuel economy is about 13-14mpg with the 4:10 rear gears. I picked up a used gear vendors overdrive unit that I will install this winter which should help improve the mileage a bit more.
I have a 72 gmc in mint converted it to a 1 ton dually and I can't decide what engine I want to put in it. Love the idea of a BB v6 like this considering they make 450+ torque at idle lol. I just don't like that big of a bore. What is also interesting though is that V6 will bolt to a Alison trans just like a 496 8.1
Rumors have it that GM V-6's got poor MPG. Just curious what you are getting - I realize this is a 478, not a 305. Did you go to a higher rear end ratio?
This truck had a 305 when I bought it, the person I got it from said it was hard on fuel only made about 10mpg. I never ran it with the 305. I knew of other guys on the GMC truck forums who were running 401's and getting much better mileage, somehow the bigger ones had better efficiency. I get around 15 with mine now, have 4.10's with a gear vendor overdrive unit which gives me a final of about 3.50.
I've always wondered about the gains from turbocharging or supercharging this family of engines. The span across the top of the piston makes me think that poor MGP is the result of the lack of any squish or swirl inducing design to mix the air/fuel charge for improved combustion efficiency. Personal history: the 351E in my family's '66 suburban produced a flat torque curve starting at 1200 RPM and returned 14 MPG on a good day.
+Deane Bristow Turbocharging a low compression engine like this would produce nice results. A larger carb and dual exhaust makes a big difference in itself.
I fabricated my own brackets and used a gm power steering pump that would have been correct for a 1968 gm truck. I actually had a '67 GMC with a V-6 and factory power steering at the time so I copied the bracket.
@Jeff Kopis I have no intention of actually doing it. It's just one of those things that would be cool to have. Custom crankshafts can be made, it's just not worth the money.
478 to 500 probably wouldn't require a stroke increase, an .080 overbore would get you close. But good luck finding THOSE pistons. Imo, all that expense for 22ci is illogical.
Nice I just read about these engines they are impressive also are they affordable and do they have performance parts for these like 4 barrel intakes and headers along with exhaust?
Brandon Weaver. My grandfather taught me to drive,61 GMC had one of these V6 Motors stick on column. My grandmother would not ride said he drove too fast Get to the lake cabin in no time. I thought it was a strange-looking engine being around straight 6 and small V8. I have a 67c10 chevy had for 42 years often thought about and had a 440 mopar and a 455 Olds to drop in it this would be different, guess I will stay with a 67 Corvette 327 look with A6 compressor. I am proud of my truck as I am my grandparents. Always think of my grandfather in the passenger seat.
How does she perform? I found a 1963 GMC 1-ton flatbed out in the woods yesterday with the 305 V6 and I’m really interested in trying to find the owner and see if he’ll part with it!
Mad respect for keeping on of GM´s great v6´s alive. God bless.
beautiful truck
I love all the engines GMC experimented with mid century.
The 478 was not an experiment. It was the premier engine for the 6000 Series trucks from 62-74.
Beautiful truck, sounds like a big heavy V-8! My dad had a 1966 GMC with a 351 V-6 and 4 speed. Pulled like a train!!!

,, with the addition of the 355 gears and the gear vendors overdrive I am getting an amazing 21mpg highway with no load ,, and still manage a healthy 11 highway and 9 in the mountains towing my camper which weighs a very healthy 16,000 pounds ,,,, my mother laughs at me when we go places as a family cause I'd rather drive my 22ft long battleship than cram into her 2008 jeep liberty with the rest of the family ,, and it gets the same mileage as my truck

Great truck and great V-6 engine. I heard a lot of good things about these engines back in the 60's.

sounds great..love one in my 61 apache 10!!
