on their side yeah. however I think using detached joycon in separate hands is more comfortable than at least the joycon grip, even if the pro controller is the superior controller overall
Many complain about the buttons but I never minded those. What I do mind is the ridge on the top which forces you to hold it very awkwardly. The ridge is needed because otherwise it would slip from your hands in handheld mode and that is very important. After all if you're playing it in a car or bus which I very often am it shouldn't just slip out of your hands. The joycons really are a compromised design. If they didn't need to be used separately they could have made them more ergonomic and if they didn't have to work when attached they could have made them more comfortable to hold.
Honestly I rather use it than buy 4 70$ controllers every year (yes that’s actually happened, yes it happened before the price cut). I know you can say that you still have to buy multiple to play with mor people but A. Just buy Wii motion it’s a free game with a Wii note attached and B if your playing with friends you can, you know, use theirs.
I love the Wiimote, I used the same one for more than 10 years and it still works. I found it to be comfortable, but I can see why other people don't like it.
Since I was a baby with small hands, it felt beautiful in my hands. I ADORE this controller seeing as how it was my first controller and my childhood. I played Kirby return to dreamland, new super Mario Wii, donkey Kong country returns, it was my jam.
it's good when you are using the 2 in the little accessory that comes with the switch that's supposed to mimic the feel of a normal controller, but using only 1 of them sucks SO BAD.
I personally think the Joy-Cons are the worst. Along with drift and controller lag, there is much more wrong with them. They lack D-Pads and the analog stick is absolutely atrocious, with my thumb constantly rubbing on it on accident, moving the camera in some games when I didn’t want to. The Switch also lacks grips which even the Gamepad had. When the Joy-Cons are on there aide they are extremely puny, being even worse than the Wii remote horizontally! The shoulder buttons are just awful when the controllers are horizontal.
Yeah. Most controllers have the right stick angled inwards to prevent that. The issue with that though is that would make playing them vertically a lot more difficult. It's also the reason it doesn't have a D-pad. The Joycons really are compromised by having to be used sideways. I wouldn't call the analog stick bad though. It's about on par with other handhelds.
Honestly wiimotes are good but if i put that weirdass strap on the joycons and play sideways, it feels much better. Maybe because i have relatively small hands idk
The most cursed sideways Wiimote "experience" I've ever had was trying to play Project M on sideways wiimotes on the Wii U with some friends back in 2014. Back then I was one of those people that thought the mark of being a good player was just wavedashing/wavelanding a lot, and continuously attempting to do that with the B-button behind the d-pad was really something else. I don't know if I can think of any other controllers that are less comfortable than that other than the additional d-pads/control sticks/buttons included on Guitar Hero/Rock Band controllers to navigate menus. They just feel gross to me and are not mapped in any way that considers the placement of the user's hands, so in any context outside of those rhythm game menus (thankfully a scenario that was never forced upon anyone), it would arguably the worst controller I could think of.
Hard disagree on the guitar hero/rock band guitar thing. All those buttons have some purpose. (Even if sometimes it’s just “hey you can’t go left and right with the strum bar so you can use this to navigate Xbox menus or for the Wii to move the cursor around

While I'd no problems, I can see why people have them and, yes, limiting the controls because of nostalgia is a silly idea. Even more so when you have to point at the Sensor to shoot missiles (locked-on a target) and you can't move except the dodge. All the nuances from Prime 3 (and the Trilogy as a whole) were gone. 8 directions in a 3D environment with a top-view 2D map? That's also bad. And the game can be finished in three-four hours, maybe less if we exclude cutscenes...
I played other m just fine and finished it, didn't hurt anything and metroid games have never been long, only the prime games and thats probably cause of the fpv.
Oh god, yes. It has all the problems of Super Paper Mario but AT LEAST in that game the 3D perspective and pointing is just a gimmick that is only used in some areas. In Metroid Other M you HAVE to point to the screen for using something as vital as MISSILES and you're forced to use the D-Pad in a permanent 3D space. And that's is x10 stupider because Corruption sets the perfect control scheme for a 3D Metroid on the Wii and they just threw it away lol
@@benlinlin1 I'm not talking about, that other m is one big mess, it's obvious. But, I actually can point fast enough to shoot missiles while jumping or immediately after overblast. That's not even getting into the drifting problems, which, while I haven't experienced it yet, I can guarantee isn't fun.
i MAIN sideways wiimote, and you can never take away from me the charm of playing smash brawl and having to go out of your way to press the minus button, just to be able to grab
“The stick that sits at the detachable left half of the controller doesn’t drift.” Me, who’s nunchucks drift like crazy and general grievous keeps walking into the mustafar lava no matter how many times I attach and detach the nunchuck: *”This is fine.”*
The Wii-mote and nunchuck though is the most comfortable gaming set-up. Though it does have far fewer buttons than a classic gamepad. Also while the Wii-mote was not very accurate it was very responsive and most "shaking" really was just vibrating. I like it especially in TP as you can use the sword and items separately.
@@legoboy7107 I wish they would make something like it for the Switch. Something similar to the joycons but larger. The joycons really are too small to comfortably fill up your hand like the Wii did. With a little tuning they could even have it have the second pair of buttons to have it act as a seperate controller for the multiplayer. You just can't attach it.
I really liked vertically holding the Wii Remote, it felt like I was swinging a lightsaber! Now Darth Maul, he's a HUGE fan of the horizontal Wii Remote (1) because it's like holding his lightsaber and (2) because he's crazy.
I would argue the opposite, the WII controllers are the best. Why? Because all 5 of my Wii remotes still work after countless hours of smash. My joy cons? All drifting. Even my pro controllers drift.
The New Challenges in Kirby's Dream Collection (which play exactly like Return to Dreamland) actually do support the GameCube Controller, so Hal at least learned.
The Metroid Other M devs: I have an idea, let's have Samus move in a 3D space using the Wiimote d-pad Intern: What about missiles and stuff? There's not a lot of buttons available in the sideways Wiimote configuration... Devs: We'll just make players switch to first-person point-and-shoot for missiles. Intern: Why not just add a nunchuk and make the whole game first-person? Devs: Because that's the Prime series' gimmick. Now stop asking questions or you're fired.
The Wii mote was an important part of gaming history. It introduced multiple ways to play and allowed casuals to enjoy games. Motion was a bog thing that allowed games to be better. The sideways remote has a dip by the B button to hold it better, allowing for games to be played with fewer buttons. It felt like an NES controller, which reminded many older people of the NES they grew up with, and made games that used it less complicated than a game with more buttons. There should be options but this is one of the most important controllers ever made, due to the introduction of motion.
Common issue that I think is fault of dust getting throught the port into the controller. Because my older one that had been exposed to dust more has these kinds of issues more then the one I used more and got into closet after use. TL;DR: The controller shouldn't have these issues if you didn't let it sit in dust.
Why does every single one of Nintendo's controllers have a flaw? Joycons were supposed to be the "perfect controller", but we all see how that went. What flaw will the next console have?
From my experience you better keep your goddamn Wii remotes and nunchuks in some closet or whatever where dust cannot get into ports. Because my og blue Wiimote is completely useless with nunchuks or my pro controller because of the dust in the port.
I own something called the Big Oversized Super Shell (BOSS). It snaps onto a Wii remote to give the sideways grip a very NES-2 controller sort of form factor, as well as making the D-pad, 1 and 2 buttons, and to a lesser extent the minus-home-plus triad significantly larger than they are on the remote itself (whilst downplaying the A button by making it smaller).
I have no problems with it but I grew up with it since I was small all the way until 8th grade when I finally got my first more traditional controller, the gamecube controller, and never used any more traditional console gaming setups during that time, so of course I was used to it since I was like 5 and have no problems because I was "trained" to use it. But for people who had grown up with more traditional gaming control setups I can see why it doesn't really work for them.
Good video but I was unable to relate. I don’t think I’ve ever once had problems holding the controller sideways but it might have to do with the fact that I have small hands. I’m really surprised you didn’t bring up Metroid Other M though. That game forces you to use a sideways Wii Remote AND is fully 3D.
SAME! I was able to borrow my friend's Wii for and I still had my copy of Brawl laying around, so I decided to try it with the Wiimote first, but I had a gamecube controller on hand. *I can't believe how I actually managed to beat Subspace with a sideways Wiimote oh my GOD.*
At least you got to experience such amazing abandoned concepts as the Wiimote playing crusty voicelines when you choose a character and doing smash attacks with inaccurate motion controls. Oh and double-tapping a direction to run, that one was actually a good one
Idk, I’m fine with the wii mote I think its an alright controller, the dpad could’ve been better. I don’t like the n64 controller though, three prongs, horrible joystick, atleast it was comfortable.
This was very interesting! I always grew up using the Wii Remote either by itself as a pointer or on its side. I NEVER used it with a Nunchuck (unless it was for Wii Sports Boxing) so that control method was super confusing with the button layout! Granted, I only really played Wii Sports, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and MarioKart Wii so no wonder I played those games with unpopular control styles lol. Honestly, I really like using the Wii Remote sideways and people always wonder how I can play MarioKart with it haha! Obviously, nowadays, I use the Wii U Pro Controller and the Switch Joy-Cons the most but the Wii Remote is super nostalgic!!
In some games, it was great. NSMBWii, Mario Kart Wii (was decent), SSBB (if an NES controller game is good for you), some third party games, and (this is very unpopular) Kirby's Return to Dreamland.
i agree with everything here. the nintendo 64 controller, even though there are a few flaws, it’s still great. the wiimote while being great with the nunchuck, sideways it was very clunky and games that only supported that made the otherwise fun game much worse. also, I WILL DEFEND SUPER PAPER MARIO TO THE DAY I DIE IT IS AN UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE.
Eh I never had a problem with the sideways Wii Remote, but then again, I grew up with it first rather than a traditional controller (which I never had until I got a gamecube controller in like 2016), so I was familiar with it and was "trained" to use it. I've noticed that with a lot of Wii gimmicks that people complain about who had other gaming setups growing up, where I'm fully accustomed to them and have zero control problems unless the GAME was poorly made: the motion control stages in Super Mario Galaxy come to mind, where most people I see complain about them being motion based and say they're imprecise and hard to control and whatnot, while I have zero problems controlling them and have a perfect sense of how much to tilt the remote to move the thing in what way, I can oneshot those levels no problem and even do precise trick stunts. It probably has a lot to do with what different people were trained with when they were younger, for me who exclusively used these Wii things and whatnot as a small child all the way up until nearly high school I can do all them no problem, but for someone who used a traditional controller and gaming setup when they were younger I can see why these gimmicks and things would be problematic. It's like, they require brand new players with no prior or alternate gaming experiences and then they're great, but for those who have had other gaming setups/experiences they can kinda suck because of how different they are.
Nah, I love side wii remote. It’s amazing when playing Punch-Out!! It isn’t the best way to play every game, but I see it as a major improvement on the NES controller with a speaker built in.
On the subject of joycons (since I'd also argue they're worse than the wiimote), it's kind of sad. The joycons had the potential to be the best and most versatile controller Nintendo had ever put out. They had all the functionality of Nintendo's previous controllers up to the Wii and then some, and you could even share them with a friend _but then drift had to come in and ruin everything_
I wish I could have had the Wii when I was a kid, looked like fun. I could buy one now but i guess it wouldn’t feel the same as playing it for the first time as a kid.
I dunno, I have to relatively disagree, I thought the sideways wiimote was perfectly fine to wield. I REALLY liked the controls for Kirby’s Return to Dreamland. Maybe it’s just that my hands are perfectly sized? I do agree that more options is only a good thing though
Fun fact: If you play with the nunchuck controls new super mario bros wii, its technally possible to play with only one hand since for some reason the d-pad is still used
For a vid trashing the side ways sigle Wiimote playstyle the lack of Metroid Other M mentions THE SINGLE WORST game for the single Wiimote and no other choices given is a huge ommission.
@@fennemon Exactly. And it Wii Remotes don’t cost like $70. My Wii Remotes I have still work after over 10 years, meanwhile my Joy Con last like about a year. I never had a problem with the side Wii Remote. Or Motion Controls. They need to get good at Motion Controls.
You know ? You need sometimes some of these things you don't want to have. But what you should know, is that in life, you need to evolve from the past...
in my experience, de blob suffered from the same problem as super paper mario, not because it used the sideways wiimote (it didn't), but because you had to SHAKE THE WII REMOTE TO JUMP
This video made me realize something: The Wii games that I keep coming back to, games like Sonic Colors, Arc Rise Fantasia and Phantom Brave, are all games that give you a ton of control options. And with Kirby, I feel like every mainline game since RtDL has had a weird issue with the controls: the 3DS games all map jump to A and attack to B with no way to change it, thank goodness Star Allies at least lets you remap some buttons
I have small hands with relatively short fingers (not so much that using a keyboard or playing an instrument is hard but y'know) And I've always found that a lot of the controllers people complain about, like the sideways Wiimote or the original 3DS, I find comfortable. People with larger hands and longer fingers have a hard time with the tiny Nintendo boxes.
@@OMalleyTheMaggot I have normal sized hands with average fingers... I find the Wii mote pretty comfortable too. Part of my love for it comes down to nostalgia, admittedly.
I mean, I like the Wii remote. I understand how hard it was to point and use it on its side but with the nunchuck and the Wheel (Mostly for MK), it made it easier to use. At least for me.
I think you had forgotten to bring up Metroid Other M in the case of the sideways wii mote. Where that game is always 3d, yet requires you use a wii mote.
My personal favorite use of the sideways wii remote is for yoshi's woolly world, as it let's you hop from moving to quickly and precisely aiming yarn balls. The game has a lot of control options built in, but I always go back to the sideways Wii remote.
I guess you could say that, in a way, with the incredible accessibility of the Switch controllers like the Joy-Cons, Nintendo has started to... *drift* away from some of their past issues

Manek Iridius He also states that sideways joy con is better when it's half the size with stick drift.
“The stick that sits at the detachable left half of the controller doesn’t drift.”
Me, who’s nunchucks drift like crazy and general grievous keeps walking into the mustafar lava no matter how many times I attach and detach the nunchuck: *”This is fine.”*
every controller with a joystick in existance has drifted so yea saying the nunchuck doesn't drift is stupid
I agree, the Wii Remote and Nunchuck setup is fantastic.
I actually find the sideways Wii remote very comfortable to hold. It is how I played all my Wii games when I could.

For some reason, Wii remote and nunchuck feel good
The New Challenges in Kirby's Dream Collection (which play exactly like Return to Dreamland) actually do support the GameCube Controller, so Hal at least learned.
The Metroid Other M devs: I have an idea, let's have Samus move in a 3D space using the Wiimote d-pad
Intern: What about missiles and stuff?
There should be options but this is one of the most important controllers ever made, due to the introduction of motion.
they could have added more buttons to hold sideways, it wouldn't have changed the motion controls
@@leonpaelinck it was important to keep it simple for casuals, otherwise it’d be too complicated for most and then they’d probably wouldn’t bother
@@leonpaelinck That's where the nunchuck comes in
A friend of mine had a Wii controller that drifted.
All the time or sometimes?
Mine drifted if I moved the stick while it powered up.
@@geistgrace6452 Sometimes, yeah.

@@lillypad6936 In fact, new Joycons tend to be better. I bought a pair a little more than a year ago and it hasn't drift at all
From my experience you better keep your goddamn Wii remotes and nunchuks in some closet or whatever where dust cannot get into ports. Because my og blue Wiimote is completely useless with nunchuks or my pro controller because of the dust in the port.
imo the sideways wii remote is actually really really good, if you get a rubber protection case thing around it, its extremely comfortable to use
Thee wii remote I never had problems with and LOVED it to DEATH!! But I can see why people hate it since it's hard to get used to.
I have no problems with it but I grew up with it since I was small all the way until 8th grade when I finally got my first more traditional controller, the gamecube controller, and never used any more traditional console gaming setups during that time, so of course I was used to it since I was like 5 and have no problems because I was "trained" to use it. But for people who had grown up with more traditional gaming control setups I can see why it doesn't really work for them.
my 7 year old hand formed around the sideways wiimote thanks to poképark games. i’m immune to hand pain now
XD
Good video but I was unable to relate. I don’t think I’ve ever once had problems holding the controller sideways but it might have to do with the fact that I have small hands. I’m really surprised you didn’t bring up Metroid Other M though. That game forces you to use a sideways Wii Remote AND is fully 3D.
I have really long hands, and also have had no problem with the controllers
Its ironic; my first Wii game was Super Paper Mario. The sideways remote was the only way I LIKED holding it after that
I don’t know what to comment.
...Bug Fables, am I right?
Big agree.
Thousand year door and Bowser’s inside story are the best Mario RPGs

God I can't believe I played Brawl like this as a kid.

@@antioriginalityguy yes
I strongly disagree with y’all’s opinions on the controllers. I think the Wii mote and N64 remote are amazing
Seems like someone wasn't able to beat Matt
Where is Matt when you need him? We need a Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort remake.
I never played any Mario platformer more smoothly than those on the Wii, I lowkey suck at NSMBU Deluxe but I was nearly untouchable on the Wii U

i honestly really loved the sideways wii remote. i probably got dropped when i was young..
In some games, it was great. NSMBWii, Mario Kart Wii (was decent), SSBB (if an NES controller game is good for you), some third party games, and (this is very unpopular) Kirby's Return to Dreamland.

i agree with everything here. the nintendo 64 controller, even though there are a few flaws, it’s still great. the wiimote while being great with the nunchuck, sideways it was very clunky and games that only supported that made the otherwise fun game much worse.
also,
I WILL DEFEND SUPER PAPER MARIO TO THE DAY I DIE IT IS AN UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE.
@@legoboy7107 SPM really isn’t underrated these days, the fandom has warmed up to it, especially with the atrocity known as Sticker Star

Wiimote with nunchuck is one of my favorite controllers ever.
Sideways Wiimote is actually terrible and makes my hands hurt.
I still can't believe Metroid Other M forced you to hold the controller sideways just so you can enter first person mode when you point at the screen
They had all the functionality of Nintendo's previous controllers up to the Wii and then some, and you could even share them with a friend
_but then drift had to come in and ruin everything_

smash bros brawl with vertical wiimote (no nunchuk) is what I used when I was little and it is the best way to play that game
i agree
The PlayStation 3 controller was horribly outdated and I hated using it while I played little big planet karting
I dunno, I have to relatively disagree, I thought the sideways wiimote was perfectly fine to wield. I REALLY liked the controls for Kirby’s Return to Dreamland. Maybe it’s just that my hands are perfectly sized? I do agree that more options is only a good thing though
Fun fact:
If you play with the nunchuck controls new super mario bros wii, its technally possible to play with only one hand since for some reason the d-pad is still used
I actually thought the worst Nintendo controller is the SNES Super Scope.
For a vid trashing the side ways sigle Wiimote playstyle the lack of Metroid Other M mentions THE SINGLE WORST game for the single Wiimote and no other choices given is a huge ommission.
My nunchuck drifts and I still don't know why, drift has haunted me ever sense.

I held an Ouya controller once and immediately wanted to stop, it felt so Fucking awkward and uncomfortable
I never had a problem with using the wiimote sideways. It’s so good to hear others opinions tho
I am the single person who likes the sideways Wii Remote, and I don't know if I'm bold for saying that, or stupid for having the wrong opinion.
I have small hands with relatively short fingers (not so much that using a keyboard or playing an instrument is hard but y'know)
And I've always found that a lot of the controllers people complain about, like the sideways Wiimote or the original 3DS, I find comfortable.
People with larger hands and longer fingers have a hard time with the tiny Nintendo boxes.
@@OMalleyTheMaggot I have normal sized hands with average fingers... I find the Wii mote pretty comfortable too.
Part of my love for it comes down to nostalgia, admittedly.
The Wii Remote is the single greatest design achievement of mankind. When aliens find our remains, I hope they stumble upon one.
I mean, I like the Wii remote. I understand how hard it was to point and use it on its side but with the nunchuck and the Wheel (Mostly for MK), it made it easier to use. At least for me.

Maybe it's because I have small hands or something, but most of this things weren't an issue for me.
