From my measurement on Google Earth, from Sochi of the Russia to its far east point without going over any ocean or sea, the longest distance is 7260km.

That's not true. The real reason is carographers were originally from Europe and they didn't want to portray their continent as small as it really is compared to the other continents, especially Africa. They wanted to be seen as powerful and important and that's why they altered Europe's map size.
