    Definitely an advanced reptile, but as someone who's allergic to everything with fur, these guys are my best replacement for a dog or cat! They're easy to potty train and are full of surprises. It's lots of work everyday but such a rewarding animal❤

    I spend time with my iguana after work till evening, about 5-6 hrs a day. just keeping him on my shoulder and he never bites nor uses his tail to hit me when I get him from his enclosure. he loves cuddling.

    My exanthic morph who's now turned red with the odd tiny patch of blue left, he's 4 years old and I've put the time in with him and he's as cute as a puppy, docile and he knows who I am. Extremely intelligent and eats like a horse. As you say, very trainable, but constant affection is required and mine is a diva, changes from orange when he's happy to a dark brown when he's unhappy. He sulks and has moods, but easily cheers up with lots of fuss visible by his colour change, we are practically inseparable but he is like a big baby, likes to be stroked to sleep and eats the same time as I do. He's situated next to where I mainly sit so he's always by my side. But that's the way to tame an Iguana, as you say, a lot of time and patience like a good owner would allow for a puppy dog. Trust will build by showing a bit and your Iguana will return the favour, takes time to build up but very rewarding for an owners efforts. Understanding what you're getting involved with first and how to choose one and sex it are important to know prior to purchase, along with how to keep one. Mine uses his viv as his room, he has free roam if he wants it but the most beautiful loving creature I've ever encountered including owning dogs previously, treat an Iguana with respect, its more highly evolved than its owner, miniaturised but very clever brain, never show aggression and the tone of your voice will affect its behaviour, he will tear my limbs to pieces but in my mind, goes with the territory, so I just accept it. These aren't good pets if you 9-5 and leave on their own, but if you are at home most of the time and sit near your iguanas viv and pet him, the more he'll love you but mines now a diva and expects it every time I'm in his sight.
    Sulks otherwise.. he's a 4.5 foot 10lb Iguana, he will grow bigger, my mission is to not have a huge stroppy or aggressive Reptile, so I'll take his divaisms rather than a tail whipping biting nightmare. Older they get the more their instincts kick in so continual affection is required.
    Being male I've been concerned about his ability to be aggressive so I try and keep that thought furthest from his mind by being his slave, I'm his pet in other words. Excellent company if you're lonely with not much to do, unemployable through health issues or whatever, but then getting one is around a 20-25year commitment, if kept well, can weigh in nearly 28lbs for a big full grown alpha male, as I suspect mine is as he's shedding non stop, still rapidly growing, frightens the hell out of visitors, to me he's a stunning beautiful boy who always amazes and fascinates me, he's treated like a king and I'm his dad/partner/stroke and food giver. He's very sensitive with very sharp hearing and eyesight, very alert very quickly if a visiting cat enters my garden as that's all his, along with my house and so on. That's the dedication needed to tame one of these and you mustn't give up, it takes 12 weeks to settle one in, then the long road to gaining its trust, so important if you want a nice pet. 👍

I see baby steps already . Not running when I open her enclosure anymore comes to front to see where I am or where's my food LOL . So I can't wait til she comes out to PLAY!!!

      Thank you for your kind comments, Wilson is a big strapping iguana now but retains his lovely temperament, I’m a great believer that a pet’s behaviour is normally down to the way the owner looks after their animal, same with any living thing, it’s only as good as the body that tamed and educates them, goes for humans too!

    I’ll say iguanas are intermediate to expert lizards, they don’t have that hard if care (after you get everything you need) and their pretty hardy so a mistake or 2 won’t immediately kill them so ehhhhh

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  Рік тому +1

      many iguanas dont make it past their first year of life due to poor care. Not to mention most people arent ready to provide the space they need as an adult. Yes they are hardy, but even an iguana can only take so many mistakes.
      Thanks for your thoughts!

      Not green iguanas. Animal protein does pose some risks for their health. Their bodies are meant to utilize plant protein - animal proteins have high concentrations that can’t be properly broken down which can lead to problems such as gout because the excess products will be converted to things such as Uric acid. It is probable that green iguanas can handle a certain amount of animal protein safely, but there isn’t enough research on the subject to know how much that is, which is why there are so many sources saying to not feed green iguanas animal protein. So many captive iguanas suffer from dehydration, gout, and just overall kidney problems that can easily be backlash from consuming ample amounts of animal protein, so the safest option in my personal opinion is to not feed them anything that could possibly do him more harm than good :)

    take it from me iguanas ARE NOT VEGITARIANS they love meat they like insects i don,t know why she keeps saying they are vegetarians . it might be why her iguana growth is stunted she will probably try to blame his color for it but thats not it growth being stunted is usually from a poor diet . look it up its true they will blame everything under the sun but 80 percent of the time its the food . think about it people are the same way . iguanas love meat there is a reason when u get one from a pet store tell u too dust there food with this one type of vitamins. i know they will say the cage will stunt them it can cause problems yes but if u take a alligator and put it in a very small tank does not mean u get really small alligator it can cause problems but the leading cause 90 percent of the time is the food small cage will most likely make animals deformed in other ways it can stunt the growth but its rare .

    • @zareptiles
      @zareptiles  2 роки тому +1

      Holy cow there’s a lot to unpack here….
      1. You must be new here. Arcadius was a rescue with severe MBD hence being stunted and not well prior to me getting him
      2. Just because an animal eats something doesn’t mean it’s good for them. Iguanas will eat lots of things they shouldn’t, it’s your job to give what is appropriate
      3. Their body is literally not build to digest and handle large amounts of animal protein
      4. Dusting with calcium and multivitamins doesn’t have to do with animal protein…. It has to do with making sure they get essential vitamins and calcium….
      5. You might want to redo your research :)
      Here is some light reading for your enjoyment :)

      Iguanas don’t eat bugs or meat they are vegetarian and her iguana’s growth is not stunted it’s just not fully big yet. Iguanas shouldn’t be fed bugs or meat in the wild it’s different they would maybe want to eat small animals if their isn’t much leafy greens around so they can try to catch a small mice or something like that.
