My parents are white and adopted from Ethiopia. My mom did a TON of research into taking care of black hair, bought all the products, and would sit down for hours while she put twists in my little sister's hair. She was also not afraid to ask other people for advice and had this uncanny ability to pick other Ethiopians out in a crowd who she would then ask what products and methods they used (we live in the midwest so it's culturally ok to talk to random strangers here). I have mad respect for my mom.

Honestly UA-cam has saved my life! It's a game changer for curly hair. My white mother didn't know what to do. I have a memory of her bringing me into a black hair dresser begging for help. I saw some ladies snickering in the background. She doesn't remember this. She was too focused on getting help.
My dad's family was noooooo help 😂. My grandmother had 3 daughters who took after their white father when it came to their hair. My grandmother kept her hair in a bun since I could remember. I was the one to take care of my younger cousins 4a hair, for my aunt. I tried my hardest 😂. But it was the blind leading the blind. I was able to comb her hair out , something she wouldn't let anyone else do. I guess because I was more gentle and sympathetic to the pain 😂.
I just hope I do better by my children and I am thankful my mother was never ashamed to ask for help. It made me never ashamed to ask for help myself. 🙂

I was was given up at 5 days old and adopted into a family and grew up with tons of of biracial cousins had many cousins that were hairdressers. The lightest oil in the house was VO5 which was way too heavy for my hair. When my mom press my hair with the curling iron that they heated on the stove it would come out super stringy straight and would proof out as soon as I started perspiring. When they put a straightener in it it felt like doll hair and Tangled like doll hair it was a mess. Cutting it short didn't help it didn't know if it wanted to curl or lay down again it was a mess! I ended up letting it grow long and just wore it in a ponytail through high school and Beyond until I discovered leave in conditioners which magically changed my frizzy mess into spiraling curls thank you Jesus!

@@lexicampbell3081 No. it’s what I personally experienced. 🙄 mixed hair has so many different levels to it, it isn’t straight up black hair and it isn’t straight up white hair. Growing up my mom couldn’t just look on YT for a tutorial. I didn’t have enough time at my dad’s for them to teach me, my dad was a trucker and my stepmom worked TWO JOBS every day of the week but on weekends. I went over there every other weekend and the weekends I was at my moms belonged to her. I had to get ready for school early in the morning and had little time to do my hair. I couldn’t wash my hair for two weeks or else I’ll dry out my hair so brushing my hair through, my thick thick hair, took a couple hours on it’s own. I couldn’t stand braids that young because the only one on my dad’s side who spent time braiding the girls’ hair did them so right that it was an fn face lift. And they were so tiny you could barely see them. I was in pain 24-7 when I had them in that young.
Both my families were WORKING to provide. Not to mention I have 6 brothers on my dad’s side so they had to take care of other people. Like I said, sometimes it doesn’t work out because of time. Availability. And Accessibility. And Money. Because we didn’t have the money to test out all different products to know what worked for my specific hair. My stepmother did my hair when I was there, but what she used wasn’t good for my hair either. Because she only had stuff for her only black hair. And my hair was different.

Once you grow to be a certain age, you need to learn how to do your own hair, it’s part of proper self care. You can’t always rely on others because one day you’ll be an adult. My dad taught me how to braid when I was a child and I’ve been doing it ever since. I made this post because I see videos of how “white people can’t do black hair” when many black hair stylists are totally clueless when it comes to natural black hair. Second, based on your profile pic it doesn’t even appear as if you have any hair to speak of, so you can’t talk on this topic. Third, and most importantly, if “most” black females took care of their care, which they don’t, then they wouldn’t constantly be destroying it with relaxers/perms, weave, dyes, bleach, big chops, extensions, straighteners, etc. Fourthly, why don’t you look up the definition of contradiction because at no time did I ever “contradict” myself. Finally, just because someone has a license to do something, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re good at their profession, and yes that does apply to many black hairstylists. Just because you use all caps doesn’t make your post look any less ridiculous. I don’t waste my time arguing with random internet fools such as yourself and that goes for anyone else on UA-cam. Tell me u have a mom that was there for u, loved u, and did her best without telling me. So many lil girls would give anything for their mama to fix their hair. My mom wouldn't even get off her bed to wake me up. She yelled until it woke me up and then I'd go sort through piles of clothes in the laundry room looking for something to wear. My teacher brushed my hair. My mom didn't even get up to see me off to school. She would be asleep when I left and gone doing what she wanted when I got home. My big brother ran my bath water and fixed me something to eat. Mom would come home after I was a sleep. Never, ever bash your mama for trying. She tried bc she loves u.

I hate hearing of a black child with a white mom or a mixed child with a white mom having to deal with their hair being terrible, all they'd have to do is maybe watch some videos about hair care, take you to a black hair salon, it's not that hard. If you're going to have a child that's going to be A different race from you the least you could do is look into how to take care of them when it comes to things like hair, or skincare, or anything cosmetic really.

Same. I dreaded every morning before school (hair has to be twin braided, school rules) because my mom had no clue and no patience to work on my thick wavy hair. I had short bob till I was 12, I had to fight to grow my hair, but then I didn't know how to braid it, it's not like I could learn from UA-cam. She would tear my hair and scalp in the process of braiding it, all the while cursing me for having "bad" hair.
I am almost 30 now and in love with my natural beautiful waves. I wish someone hugged me and taught me how to take care of my hair when I was a kid, would have reduced some of my trauma.
