Very well done and engaging! It was very nice of him to let you film his Tour, made for interesting viewing!
Stayed in Nishinari-ku back in '19 and never felt unsafe, or even a little nervous... though it might help that I am a 6'3" former US Marine and walk with a sense of purpose and strength, or so I am told by my lovely Better Half, Alan... but, who knows?!

It’s obvious she’s only been there a week. She still sounds a bit nervous. Any foreigner that has spent a lot of time in Japan knows that the very most “dangerous” areas of Japan are statistically much safer than even the most exclusive neighborhoods in America or Canada. I’ve walked by myself through this area in the middle of the night numerous times and the scariest thing that ever happened was some random drunk Japanese man running towards me out of the dark to hand me a can of Asahi. Lol.

The safety in Japan is on a level you don’t find in the West. Violent crime is virtually unheard of. A lot of that’s due to the fact in Asian cultures our obsession with personal identity is frowned on. Family, clan and the country come first. A very different way of doing things that keeps people in bounds. Nishinari as shown in your video is in stark contrast to the dangerous hoods of American cities. Its literally like the difference between day and night.

Also contributing to this is the very low level of foreign population. It makes for a high trust society as well as very conservative. Typically larger government is better tolerated.

There's shit going down in every minute of every day in America, e.g., robbing, mugging, stabbing, carjacking, road rage, murder, mass shooting, etc, etc. It never ends. It's pretty far from Haiti -- granted -- but it's not even close to being as safe as Japan.

The rest of East/Southeast Asia, outside of Singapore and maybe South Korea, is generally a good deal less safe than Japan, especially with the rise of the meth epidemic in SE Asia. And the safety one finds in Japan comes at the cost of individual freedoms (like basic self-expression) and happiness. It's not a good tradeoff, in my personal opinion.

I concur. Two examples. After arriving in Tokyo, my travel buddy lost his backpack in the middle of a busy street. He had his wallet, passport, headphones and whatnot in there. Not only that, but he left his backpack wide open too. After 20 minutes he realized it (jet lag, you know) and two English speaking students were so kind to take us back to this street. He found it and nothing was missing.
I went to a BABYMETAL concert in the Tokyo Dome and had to go to the toilet. A random Japanese guy with a face mask told me he would look after it. Because of the long line, it took me quite some time to get back to my seat. Guy was still there and so was my backpack.
I also walked around with my backpack in sketchy, quiet areas in different places, even at night. No one ever hassled me or made me feel unsafe. I've been to 22 countries so far and I've never experienced anything like this (although I will say that Thailand felt very safe too). Japan is special to me and I'm still in love with it.

Nishinari has recently been working to improve the city. It was a dangerous city probably decades ago. There are several places like Nishinari in Japan, and those places usually have cheap hotels where day laborers stay. I once stayed in such a place in Tokyo about 10 +years ago, but the atmosphere of the people staying there was so scary that I could not leave my room... Perhaps such generation will be much less in another 10 years. Such a town with many day laborers is called "do-ya-gai (ドヤ街)" in Japanese, but I think it is hardly heard anymore.

Welcome back to Japan! Nishinari Distinct was first developed as an amusement center in Osaka symbolizing the Tsutenkaku Tower. But the area had been left behind as northern Namba and Umeda distincts flourished. Nishinari became the temporary residence for migrant day-workers. That's why everything is so cheap there. Now renovation works are going on there and cheap lodgings are changing into backpackers' hostels.

Well Alina, I am also subscribed to the Oriental Pearl Channel featuring Anming, who lives in Japan. She does a lot of language videos and Japanese travel engagement videos. Her proficiency in Japanese and Mandarin allows for different type of interaction with residents. About a month ago she released a video on the homeless area of Tokyo and it got a lot of interest. She subsequently did the same for Yokohama and Osaka. I naively for some reason, never thought about a problem that exists worldwide, also being present in Japan. She mentioned that some tourists stay in these areas because of the reasonably priced accommodation. The last person I expected to obtain accommodation in one of these areas was Alina McLeod. Since her first video premiered, I've had a number of videos in my recommendations, most created after hers.
Yours was totally unique in flavour and tone from all of the others, and I found your take on this area fascinating. A completely
engaging tour through another area of Japan that tourists do not see or if they do, do not comprehend what is really being viewed. The homeless and poor of these areas are still Japanese, and thus the public face of these areas, disguises what is really happening.
As always your content educates and entertains me. Thanks muchly. I await your next release.

Late 2023, to be honest, it's not that bad. The area is very interesting but you'll see a big divide between Nishinari and other neighborhoods. Lots of drunkards at night and people shouting either they're high or just drunk. I also saw people who passed out on the sidewalks. You won't see cops patrolling regularly but I see some of them once in a while. Also, lots of karaoke bars.
To me, Nishinari feels very human. It feels so real. I'll definitely be back here for my second Osaka trip.

You watched the dark side of Japan.
People living in this district originally came for "hand-to-mouth" work. They were very poor because of many personal reasons. As a result, the security in this area became worse. And the unique atmosphere for human desires was created.
The current condition became better than before, but be more careful in this district than in any other areas in Japan!

The website for Hotel Lucky shows more like a hostel. Anyway, this was way cool. Did you feel like you needed to hide your wallet from pick pockets? I grew up in Japan and honestly, in Tokyo, I'd hide money in my shoe from pickpockets. It does happen. As great of a country it is, there are certainly riff-raff. My nephew (half-Japanese) told me about Nishimari when I told him where I was staying and he said ALL the same stuff. I told him all the same stuff back. "Shitamachi" or "skid row" in Japan is still nicer than parts of New York City.

Puffer fish price was tagged in bkk at world trade center at 75 bucks a kilo. This fish is banned for consuming in tieland only special cook would know to prepare. It's better to have daily tour leaded as packged tour there.I guess i have heard the name of red light district area in japan, but not the one you're mentioning.

Agree with you about the beautiful women in Osaka. I’ve seen some videos from UA-cam and they’re lovely. There is a Korean youtuber named JINU who makes friends all over the world.

Alina, be careful in Osaka as the air has reached a high level of pollution & is unhealthy for sensitive groups. Reduce time spent outside if you are feeling symptoms such as difficulty breathing or throat irritation. Do wear mask to get rid of bad air.

I just a few days ago watched an old episode of Columbo called "Murder Under Glass" where the murder was committed using poison tetrodotoxin extracted from fugu, which I assume is the same pufferfish you are referring to. Not a pleasant way to die!

that red light district in osaka is pretty tame. i would have thought there would be allot of love hotels which i heard japan was known for and much livelier.

The shady areas are so clean that they look more like a movie set. That’s a nice thing. However, I’m not sure I’d like to go to Japan. they have too many reservations toward Westerners.

Any idea where that tour guide grew up? His accent while speaking English seemed at least somewhat Japanese, so I am guessing he learned English while living there.
