I like how in this movie, Dick Van Dyke's character refers to when he played in "Stepping Time" in the original by saying "I still got a few steps left in me."
10:13 Also, when the actress who originally played Jane asks for the address, she thanks Jane and Jack by saying, "Many thanks, sincerely," which was how Jane and Michael signed off on their help wanted ad for a new nanny.

Here’s one that most missed. When Mary enters the home for the first time the background score plays one bar of “Spoon Full of Sugar” then continues with its previous melody.

Very unfair about Lin's accent. He nailed it. I lived in London for 35 years and, cor blimey, he went and done it somethink brillian'. In the last 20 years, movie accents have seriously improved in all movies, in the early 60s no one seemed to care. MP Returns was shot in London and at Shepperton, Dick Van Dyke had to film in Hollywood where he could not really research it and no one told him his accent was bonkers or asked him to rectify it.
I loved MP Returns. It is a joyous film firing on all cylinders right from the start. They DO make movies like they used to.
Yeah, on Dick Van Dyke's accent. He knew he didn't have it and the brilliant director hired and Irish man to teach Dick the cockney accent...I know that the casting of Dick Van Dyke was P L Travers's biggest objection...
It was a fake, exaggerated accent with both American Actors playing the Cockney characters.
In this one, that was most likely intentional.
Dick Van Dyke publicly apologized for his accent but, when he requested a coach, Disney got him an Irish guy who really didn't know how to teach him the cockney accent. I know that P L Travers hated that Dick was cast in the 1964 movie but Van Dyke at the time was the lead of the number one show on television directed by Carl Reiner "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and naturally, Disney saw box office.

I thought both actors' "cockney" accents were charming and endearing.
ANOTHER EASTER EGG caused me to burst out in laughter. After his song & dance on the desktop, Dick Van Dyke starts to tell a story then stops himself & starts another--just like any old person would do. The first story is the half of the first line OF THE MOST HILARIOUS JOKE THAT BERT TELLS in the original. (Is this the ad-lib that the cast has talked about in that scene???) It was all I could do to control myself after my wife slapped & shushed me. I love to laugh at DVD's jokes.
Wooden leg named Smith story right from the original in the laughing floating to the ceiling song right...I was laughing like crazy when I heard him saying that....... I heard that he did it for fun and they decided to keep it because it was so funny
I caught the reflection one, the penguins, the umbrella head, the kite, Ellen, the water globe of St Paul's Cathedral, "Close your mouth, we're still not codfish" "Jane still rather inclined to giggle" from her tape measure, "You think they would have learned to put their things away by now" about the papers, Ms. Lark and her dog (Same breed as the first film, without the sneeze) plus, there's a joke in the first film about "A Man with a wooden leg named Smith" , and Michael's wife's name was "Kate" like the nanny that left in the first film before Mary arrives.

@@abramsullivan7764 Julie Andrews can no longer sing due to surgery she had in 1997 and she didn't make a cameo because she wanted this to be Emily Blunt's moment. And Emily Blunt was wonderful in the role.

I made the emotional mistake of watching the original "Mary Poppins" the day before watching "Mary Poppins Returns". It had been years since seeing the original, and I'd never seen the second. I was a quivering mass of emotions after watching the second one...and believe me, I didn't miss a thing!
Emily & Lin-Manuel were positioned on either sides of the desk while Dick was dancing on the desk, to act as spotters. He didn’t need them
Really enjoyed the sequel. It was a great nod to the original while still being its own original story.
Emily Blunt is a pretty good singer, too (of course, she isn’t Julie Andrews) but she still does a great job!
I was amazed all over again with how beautiful Julie Andrew's voice was in the clips from the original movie.

Saw the movie today and absolutely loved it! Im 60 yrs old and can remember seeing the original when it first came out. Loved the entire cast and all the songs and dancing. Bravo for this sequel!
Woah, I only watched the first film when I was 15 (1997) !! I bet it was very revolutionary back then, because I felt amazed even only watched it back then in ninetees

The reference to marmalade is made at the very beginning of the film when Michael has completely forgotten to go to the grocery store and Ellen comments that all they have is marmalade and pickled herring left....This film is magical and awesome from beginning to end and there were even more Easter eggs besides the one's mentioned. I also like the fact that the neighbors and vendors are better known to all of us...

@@monkie-cmonkie-do3561 I'm going back to see the film tomorrow and I'll check your observation out. I was also alerted to the fact that Karen Dotrice is the blonde woman asking for directions on Cherry Tree Lane. I find it fascinating that Michael's picking up the waterless globe was reminiscent of that song, either that or the huge tragedy of the operation which totally destroyed Julie Andrews's singing voice ? I know that she was so angry that she was going to sue. Maybe and maybe I'm being sarcastic. Also, did you notice how Mr. Dawes Junior winked at Mary? She made a visit to the man and I find this fascinating since, in the original film, Mr. Dawes Senior is an old and very greedy curmudgeon also played by Dick Van Dyke. I loved the unmixing of his name in the closing credits again and it amazes me that maybe Mary Poppins taught Junior a lesson about the evils of being greedy like his dad? I loved the realisation that Michael admitted to when he understood that the kids had been fighting for him more than he'd been fighting for them. I would love to see the further adventures of Jane and Jack as well. Also, the year 1935 is only four years before Hitler invaded Poland, starting WWII and John would probably be old enough to be conscripted....No, I know that Darwell was a fantastic character actress who was nominated for an Oscar for John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath."
Paul Delgadillo I found that out today too. She said “many thanks sincerely” after they give her the directions. That line was the last line in the song she sang called “the perfect nanny,” she wrote one the piece of paper Mr. Banks ripped up and threw in the fireplace
@@monkie-cmonkie-do3561 When watching the film again, I don't believe that the bird woman is sleeping, she's just died and that leaves room for her "sister" the balloon lady at the end. The balloon lady definitely has her magical ways and she is the one who gives Mary the final red balloon.

Over the last few months I have loved Mary Poppins returns. I was drawn to it when I saw it in the theatre with my family. Most of all, I loved the song THE PLACE WHERE THE LOST THINGS GO.
It took me a while to be able to see the movie. The first time I heard the song "The Place Where Lost Things Go" was during the Academy Awards. It was less than a year after my mother died. I listened to the song and was a quivering mass. It hit my heart so hard! When it lost to the travesty that was "Sha-la-la-low" I just about exploded with anger.
Just saw the movie and noticed every one of those!! There was also a tune being played from the original in the background during a scene in Returns but, I'd have to see it again to recall exactly what that was and when! In my opinion, this sequel was every bit as much of a masterpiece as the first; perhaps, even more so when you take into consideration all of the remarkable and fantastic special effects that were used. The appearance by Dick Van Dyke gave me chills. I had to check the internet to see if everything he did was on his own or had been supplemented by FX. The fact that he did that scene on his own steam at his age is SUPREMELY impressive!!

They included the snow globe, but in the original Mary took it with her at the end, but yet Micheal has it, they also had at the begging with mary saying to Jane “still rather inclined to giggle I see” and saying to Micheal “close you mouth Micheal we are still not a codfish”

I loved the movie! Saw it last night. Can't stop listening to the soundtrack. I'm hooked on The Place Where Lost Things Go, it's so beautiful and touching.
Agreed, I thought it was the "Feed the Birds" of this film - the best song in the show.

That’s my favorite song from the movie too. I just happened to see this film the day before the 11th anniversary of my own mother’s passing and I listened to it several times throughout the day.
I could not agree more about being hooked on that song. So hauntingly beautiful and inspirational.

I just got home from watching it in the theater. It was delightful.
I was really disappointed in this movie. I saw Mary Poppins in the theater back in the 60s. The return feels to me that the folks at Disney tried to hard. There was too much going on with the plot. It was scattered. I'm a Disney collected and huge fan. I 'll go watch it again ,maybe it will be better the second time around. Not so sure Mr. DISNEY would like it,

I saw all except for 2 things. I didn't see the spelling blocks, & I didn't know that the lady asking for the address was the original actress who had played Jane Banks. Otherwise, yes, everything else was quite noticeable.

Colin Firth was originally cast to voice Paddington Bear, and was later replaced by Ben Wishaw. Both actors also appear in Mary Poppins Returns.
I had never heard of Lin before this movie, and I had never once guessed that the accent was fake.
He's in the musical Hamilton, he plays Hamilton. He's an amazing actor and singer.

This Ms Mojo contains so many spoilers, l don’t know why l bothered to see the movie! ☹️
Outstanding performances from Blunt, Miranda, Firth and Streep and George Banks, the youngest child, was particularly good.
Although this sequel could never supersede the original, it has some catchy songs, great dance numbers and magic.
I've not seen Mary Poppins Returns yet but Emily Blunts Mary Poppins seems to stern for me. I liked Julie Andrews softer and more loving approach.
I have seen a few people say this, and honestly I think they need a refresher. Julie Andrews' version was harsh as well because the character was written that way.
That being said, you can visibly see the joy Emily Blunt had playing Mary Poppins when you watch the movie. It's endearing and the nostalgia I felt brought tears to my eyes.
Having just done the stage production (which I think is a superior story to the original movie), I actually liked the slightly more stern, slightly more sarcastic Mary. I thought this sequel nailed it.
People who say that clearly haven't seen the original film any time recently. Mary was always stern and no nonsense outside the fantasy sequences. That is the character.
This Mary is even does a raunchy dance number. Its appaling and a borderline abomination.
I find it interesting that so many people say this. In the original movie, Mary Poppins would never admit that the fun happened and told the children they were talking foolishness. Watch the Stay Awake scene. Also she NEVER would have gone to the bank, or shown the smiles that our new Mary did. I felt as if she was even future from the book Mary as well. Both were great screen Mary’s though.
I will say it is very accurate, Still have the old Mary Poppins movie and now the new one. Truth be told Disney never ceases to amaze me or lose its magic. I hope they continue keeping that same magic for generations to come.

A major character's accent? The kite that concludes the first film and plays a major part of the story in the sequel? Pretty sure you'd only miss these things if you were dead.

There a lot more subtle things like the bird lady at the beginning and my favourite the pavement paintings behind Jack a the end of the film
Also, when the children burst into Mr. Wilkens' office, he says "What is all this?" which I think is referencing Step in Time.
The robin on Mary's hat is a correction: the 1964 robin was an American Robin, which would be highly unusual in England, while the bird on her hat this time around is an actual European Robin (simply known as the robin redbreast in England).

Three Easter eggs that I noticed.
1. The part where Jacks Lear friends dance with the lights is a nod to Berts chimney sweep friends
2. When Mary Poppins honks the penguins beak, it is a hint to the first movie when the penguin kissed her on the cheek
3. WHEN JACK CLIMBS UP BIG BEN AND STANDS ON THE LADDER OVERLOOKING LONDON HE STANDS WITH HIS ARMS SPREAD AS IF HE WAS GOING TO TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH, THIS IS A REFRENCE TO ASSASSIN'S CREED SYNDICATE
I watched it today it was great . Mary Poppins was outstanding 😍
Not a "great" movie but a fun bit of nostalgia for those who enjoyed the original. It very much follows the original as a road map, not just in the specific callbacks listed here, but in the whole structure, almost scene by scene and song by song:- adventure in the animated bowl = the animated sidewalk drawing sequence; "topsy-turvy" house = tea party on the ceiling; dancing lamp lighters = dancing chimney sweeps; "let's go fly a kite" = floating away with balloons in the park, and so on. The parallels are blatant, but more it's an inside joke for fans than a cheesy ripoff. Don't set expectations too high, and you can enjoy it.

The fact of the matter is that watching this film is like trying to eat an entire cheesecake in one sitting. It's so rich that it will take several good sittings to really enjoy the mastery of what was accomplished. I also love the fact that here was more singing and dancing from the kids as well.

I hope Sandy Powell will win an Oscar for the costumes of this new Mary Poppins, but I think she will win for The Favorite.

Bert was MP’s pal. Jack, I feel was more like a Mary poppins fanboy.all that was missing was a shirt that says “ learies heart Mary Poppins”
At first I only wanted to see the movie for Lin-Manuel Miranda but I loved it so much

Here's one you missed! In one of the underwater scenes, Mary's dress is the same color blueish-teal that one WDW Dapper Dan is wearing. It also seems to be the same color as the character handling CM's.
My biggest problem with Mary Poppins Returns is the lack of good and catchy songs. Honestly it seemed to drone on in several places. And, IMHO, there was too much Jack. The best part was Dick Van Dyke. Priceless. That made it worth the whole movie for me along with the " Feed the Birds" homage and tune.
Agreed, the original songs are featured in the score of the new movie and they upstage them, clearly they're very memorable tunes. The new ones not so much.
The robin. When Mary wears the hat with the robin, it is an English Robin Red-breast, a very different bird to the American Robin that appears in the first movie and which Mary would certainly not have found outside a window in London.
It has always been as unbelievable as Bert's accent.
