Dynamics are usually best at higher speeds whilst Train brakes should be used at lower speeds or if you're actually planning to come to a complete stop. In reality the main reason for dynamics over air is that dynamics don't overheat as easily if you intend on having them on for a long period of time (Think large freight down a hill), unfortunately that's not simulated and dynamics can be buggy so its usually a good idea to just use the train brake. Loco brake should only really be used if you're running light or very light load.
Also bear in mind most trains, especially most US trains, tend to be slow to respond to inputs (Slow to apply brakes, slow to apply power) so gradual is usually the best strategy when doing anything.
Also down steep hills with a long consist. The air brakes would either get too hot or lock up and you'd slide down the hill out of control.
+AshHill07 if im not mistaken... aren't dynamic breaks on a train equivalent to an engine break on an 18 wheeler? Using the engine to slow the train down?
+Matthew Demko kind of. Simply put, it makes the traction motors into generators and then brings the current through a large resistor block, slowing the current and causing drag on the traction motors, slowing the train.
Dynamic brakes will almost never stop a train. That's not there purpose. Reversing the drive motors will only flow it down and only works while to axels and drive motors are moving
Never wanna use air going down hill if avoidable always use dynamics first.
Jeff for a station just hit the horn 1-2 times and then bell through it (real life if its a known crossing for track jumpers (People trying to beat the train) they'll just horn all the way through)
+david G thanks dude
And for a crossing there would be a "x" sign or a "w" sign and the sequence is 2 long horns, 1 short horn, then 1 long horn.
+Jeff Favignano hi jeff
david And as we do you have to
I hope a train engineer has this innate and somewhat irrational fear that an onrushing switch for a siding will be set for the siding instead of the straightaway by some sort of mistake and he'll fly into it in a sharp curve at 60MPH before he can slow down and derail. It's not like you can see early enough which way the switch is set. James Grider should bust up speed limit signs on the railroad using the Wykkdik of Fhekris as a joke. People should buy up my "Dance of Death" a James Grider novel on Amazon so I can afford to move into a forested area out of the scrubby desert, parts of which you see the train riding through.
Jeff, Acutal locomotive engineer here. Tips to run your train like a pro. The Throttle is usually increased/ Decreased in 7 sec intervals. The train brake don't use that unless you plan to fully stop your train or make a drastic change in speed . Dynamics are the best mixed with independent brake which is just the air brake for your locomotive. Also you're crossing sequence is correct but the bell also must sound while blowing for a crossing. When you're leaving a from a stop in a forward direction blow the horn two short blasts also sound the bell until you hit 10 mph when you make a reverse move same process but blow the horn three times. Also for added realism if you pass a another train dim your headlight. We engineers do it to keep from blinding each other. Anyhow I hope these help you. Awesome video there also some rules for signals reguarding speeds under the color indication but they vary from each different division. Anyhow awesome video. Hope the tip helps.
Reguards,
Corey
Finally, you're doing this route! I've been waiting for you to do this for so long! It's my favorite route! Thanks Jeff!
Jeff I got a keurig 2.0 coffee maker for Christmas. I absolutely love it. And I actually took an amtrak train from effingham illinois to Chicago illinois not to long ago. That was an awesome trip. It took us about 4 hrs. Love the videos
I love playing with this simulator, glad to see you're pumping out the content Jeff.
Merry Christmas bro! Thanks for all the content you put out we really appreciate it. You have kept me entertained all year during my night shift here in Washington state!
Unless you plan on coming to a stop, only use the Independent or the Dynamic braking. The Air braking has a 10 second delay when applying and when being turned off. Also, when going through a station all you have to do is a single short horn blast, and if you pay attention, there are white signs on the sides of the tracks warning for a crossing ahead. They usually show an X or a W.
Ford Morris two single short blast.
Great vid! When you turn on the dynamic brake, you increase the throttle lever to increase brake power. But you can only change the dynamic brake when in neutral. It's best to use it on a freight train going downhill with a heavy load.
Merry Christmas, Jeff. Love the Train Simulator videos, I've had the game for quite a while now, enjoyed every second of playing it. Actually ordered a RailDriver that got here yesterday, loads of fun with it so far.
I live in LA and I've taken the Pacific Surfliner route before which is the one you're doing here and I have to say it's pretty impressive with the graphics and how well you handled the route! Keep making these train Sim vids! Happy holidays Jeff!
Merry Christmas Jeff from everyone in Britain! Nice video, special for christmas day!
Nice video! It's actually my first viewing and I am quite impressed. The sound you heard at 22:53 was your dynamic braking system engaged. Dynamic braking is basically your engine brakes. You will want to engage them high as your begin a descent down steep grades in addition to your train brakes (your locomotive brakes will be set with the least amout of pressure). I'm looking forward to your next video(s)!
for dynamics you need to apply it and raise the rpm. it works by changing the electric motors into resistors and adding electricity to the battery
awesome vid jeff happy holidays!!!
Great job jeff keep up the good work you make the best videos, you are the one who got me in to flight simulation marry Christmas.
Amazing! You'll know when there's a crossing because there is usually a "W" sign (for Union Pacific, it's an "X".) If it's quiet zoned (no horn (unless emergency), bell only), it'll have either the initials "QZ" below it or cross the sign out with the circle and the slash through it.
Love to see more Jeff great video!
Merry Christmas! Thanks for a great year of videos!
Merry Christmas Jeff!! I will be looking forward to the fabulous LSPDFR vids in 2016!!
I love your video so much, you are very descriptive about your video and very clear. I want to see more of your train videos. Thank you
Love you Jeff merry Christmas!
So Cool I used to live there. Thanks for the video Jeff. Like being home again.
When moving the throttle, watch your amps and RPM, it might help you understand dynamic braking.
think of dynamic braking as engine braking in a tractor trailer, used mainly during when heavy braking is needed at higher speeds associated with heavy/large number of freight cars. Switching between dynamic and independent braking can also be used to reduce speed quickly.
Jeff: you want to use the dynamic brake most the time then add the train brake when needed as it take time to rebuild your air in the brakes. I trained as a freight train conductor back in 05, any questions feel free to fire away.
Hey Jeff, Thanks for the fun watching you demo/play/sim in 2015...All the Best in 2016-Safe Travels
HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS JEFF!!love train sim too!
merry Christmas jeff keep up the good work☺
When you turn on the Dynamic brakes be sure to put it in setup then wait a few seconds and you should be good to go when you hear that sound when you just put the dynamcis to full that means they are locked you gotta wait till they get set up then you can apply dynamics it is on almost every US locomotives.
Loved the video!
Yes, in this game, you add the power in increments to avoid wheelslips. When I play and go through stations, I just keep my speed on the speed limit (like I usually do) and sound the bell.
The dynamic brake is very useful for going down hill. It also is used for the approach into stations before applying the train brakes.
Merry Christmas to my favorite youtuber, Jeff
New computer! Built it!
FX-6300
MSI GTX 950
16 GB RAM
Xplane and Euro Truck simulator are beautiful!
Merry Christmas Jeff , have an awesome Christmas you and Nichole
Dynamic braking is relative to the power on the throttle. The higher the throttle, the more effective the dynamic brake. Also, when the speed changes downward, it takes effect when the engine reaches it, when upward it waits until the last car is clear. Merry Christmas
When your going through a yard or passing past a siding, you toot your horn in very short bursts so nobody walks out from behind the cars. When your going through a station that your not stopping at, you blow the horn once and don't need to slow down for it. Merry Christmas Jeff and enjoy your family!
I was on that train from mission viejo down to San Diego the scenery is amazing
Dynamic brakes on downhill grades sometimes suplimented with air. Auto brakes for slowing down don't forget to bail off. Push your independent brake to the side. Never slow down with your independents unless under 15 mph like around the yard. Ive been a real life engineer for about 20 yrs
Merry Christmas Jeff
You should DEFIANTLY Do More! These train videos are SO great!
Merry Christmas Jeff, and have a happy new year!
Here in the UK high speed track is up to 225 KPH! Speed controllers are not infinitely variable, they have set positions which vary from locomotive class to class.
Jeff, the procedure for stations that you are going through is you turn the bell on and blow the horn one or twice before the platform
Yes...the last unit of the train has to pass the increase speed board before you can increase to that speed. However once you approach and pass a low speed board, you must be at that low speed. Enjoyed watching.
Merry Christmas Jeff have a good time with you family! Love all your vids keep it up! :)
*your
Great Video Jeff
I got my instrument rating for Christmas! Beyond happy! I love this game!
I have rode on this from Fullerton to san Diego and back a few months ago and met some friends that started a union station in LA
Merry Christmas to you Jeff hope you make it there safe man enjoy your self man
Can't wait until you drive from San Diego since I live there!!
Awesome Video Jeff. Jeff is there a trip where you can start from LA and go to the East Coast? I think that would be a absolutely amazing video series. I would say people want to see more Jeff with 750 likes. lol
Driving an Amtrak train is going to be my dream job.
Merry Christmas Jeff! Since you asked, one of the things I am getting for Christmas is a model Aer Lingus L-1011 Tristar which is quite rare!
Dynamic braking is used down to 60mph therefore you don't really need to use it from speeds of 60 mph and lower. From higher speeds bring your speed down on the Dynamic brake to 60 mph then revert to the normal train brake from then to a stop.
Could you go by Oakland in an episode? There's an Amtrack that goes right next to the A's O.Co Stadium and the Warriors' Oracle Arena. I live close to there too.
Do more of this!
Meet Christmas, Jeff! I got an awesome subscription to 'Maximum PC' from my sister :D
There are 8 Notches of power to control... Run 1-8. Each with it's higher power settings. That is why there 8 different percentages.. The dynamics are used when coming down a grade. You would use dynamic braking with little train brake to preserve wear and tear on the cars. Also with Passenger service the locomotive or second locomotive usually runs in run 8 to power the HEP which in terms is the auxiliary power unit that powers all the passenger cars. Moving forward horn is 2 short, reverse is 3 short and a crossing is 2 long 1 short and 1 long.
He's been honking at all of the QZs which is funny. xD
The track switcher is called "junction switch"
GREAT VIDEO! MERRY CHRISTMAS!
I love playing Train Sim! Do more videos!!!!
with the dynamic brakes you need to use the Throttle Lever... It basically slows the train super fast.
Also you do increase throttle slowly
Merry Christmas, Jeff! Hope you have a good one!
I think the dynamic and independant brake are sort of like the rear and front brakes on a bike
Wishing you a Merry Christmas from a very rainy UK
Favorite game i like to see you play :D
You use dynamic breaking whilst going down hill, it helps reduce wear on the break shoes.
Dynamic braking is on this locomotive, it is diesel electric partial battery power the brakes work at various speeds and operate by returning energy to the locomotive to reduce power input for acceleration. When power is added the energy is returned via supply line. The train could be fully diesel when you tried operating the D brake. As the GE Genesis is a diesel electric train (de) traction is used for environmental friendly factor places on a particular route. Or just because of idle areas where diesel simply isn't needed.
Seen it all ready in 3D it was great
Dynamic brakes take a couple seconds to "charge up" which is why they don't apply instantly. Normally the dynamic is used to keep the train brakes from heating up in real life, which generally is when the train is going downhill. the train brakes are used for pretty much everything else (and in train sim some locomotives don't have very well programmed dynamic brakes in which they can sometimes cause ridiculous collisions within the train but thats normally only on older routes/engines) the independent brake only applies the brakes in the engine that you are in. this is not used at all except when running a lone engine light. The reason for not having more precise control over the throttle is because in real life locomotives' throttles are divided into eight notches and therefore you don't really get precise throttle control unfortunately.
As someone who absolutely loves trains, I appreciate your videos on this stuff, its really great!
hi Jeff so I liked your video cause the Amtrak p42 e bell is great plus the k5la horn is amazing brilliant so I'm proud of your video 😁🌈
Merry Christmas man!
Jeff, usually when you go through a station with or without slowing down you must sound you horn a couple of times and keep your bell on until your last car passes the station.
thanks for doing another one
Loving those PJ's, Jeff. It's not a Jeff Favignano video without the PJ's.
It's really interesting seeing the tracks in LA where I killed fifty gangsters...
Happy Christmas Eve!
You wanna use dynamic break on a continuous downslope to control speed. Applying air break for too long would burn out the breaking devices (in real life of course).
Also one thing to add is that when you come through a station and you are not supposed to stop just put the bell on and honk a couple short times
Merry Christmas Jeff!!!
yes more of these
Merry Christmas Jeff!
usually in stations in Florida is bells going through stations amtrak and SunRail ,Merry Christmas Jeff
I can't belive I'm watching this in 2022, and I realize this was made before covid, before the ukraine war, and before gas prices went up. Jeff I just want you to know that I really love your channel and it always brightens me up on gloomy days. I want to thank you for always making me feel better in bad times. I appreciate you and I hope your youtube career continues to do great. 🧡🧡
also another thing, in places where there is a 4 track mainline, its always gonna be tracks 4,2,3,1. at 20:31, your on the #2 track. easy way to remember, even numbered tracks are always closest to body of water, odd numbers are farthest.
The loco throttle is divided into 8 notches. That's why you don't have more precise control on the power settinf
It would be great if you could do San Diego to Oceanside! I ride that route all the time!
Oh nice! This train goes right past my place in Carlsbad.
you are right jeff, you do add power gradually
Dynamic brakes are mainly used for slowing trains down in large grades by taking power from the traction motors.
your throttle has 8 positions or "runs" (railroad term) you can use all 8 runs in your departure without graduating slowly through the runs. once you are at speed leave the throttle in 1 or 2 and just slightly apply air to the breaks and you shouldnt have to do a lot of work. if you do get "wheelslip" on your departure apply sand. dynamic braking is used on diesel engines and turns the traction motors into generators adding risistance to conserve air.
Also there are signs that have a big "W" on them to tell you to blow your horn. If it is a "No Horn Crossing Area" then there will be a red circle with a line drawn over the "W". Hope this helps
Jeff could you do a New York one on the Harlem line? Merry Christmas Jeff and keep up the awesome work.
Merry Christmas from New York!!
that horn sounds amazing
That is so cool!
finally more train sim!!!!!!!
More train sim would be great!
On your locamotive and cars you have a small hose spraying sand on the rails for traction that and you do have quite the weight to help as well
Merry Christmas Jeff! I got an iPhone 6S, an Xbox One, and I also saw The Force Awakens. It really is good! I also got Star Wars: Battlefront for Xbox One. :)
