  • In this episode, Aaron goes over pros and cons to having a RWD Subaru and how to convert your subaru to RWD!
    From stuck and broken bolts to a stubborn CV joint, you'll see a few mishaps that can happen during your conversion and how to overcome them!
    *I don't recommend prying apart your transmission with screwdrivers, but do what you have to do.
    *You don't need to put the inner CV cups on the axle stubs. It works just fine without them. You can also split the case and completely remove the front differential to cut down on excess rotational mass to maximize performance.
    *I would recommend cutting the outer CV cup off and leaving just the stub. This removes the hassle of prying apart the bearing, while reducing excess rotational mass.
    *Locktite is not required on the outer CV stub. You can torque it to spec just as you would a standard CV axle.

    Hey there from new Zealand. I am currently doing my second manual swap. I watched your whole manual swap series about 4 or 5 times before I attempted it myself.
    And it went so smoothly. I only use a couple of scissor jacks and a handful of loose tools. And I done it 100% by myself.
    By the time I started the swap I felt like I had done it a thousand times that is to your videos.
    I also worked out all the kinks with the wiring first pop.
    The manual swap I am doing now is a bh5 auto. So there are subtle differences. However the biggest difference is the vehicle speed sensors from the original auto gearbox. There are 3 on the original auto box. And I'm not sure how I'm going to rewire it for the 3 wire speed sensor on the manual gearbox. But I'm in no hurry and am researching the hell out of it.
    Just wanted to share the love and give you a huge thank you for your efforts.... And subscribed today...

      +l33boy hey thanks!
      I'm always happy to hear that my videos helped out!
      I only started my research on the bh chassis manual swap, but never ended up pulling the trigger on it, so I never got as far as the speed sensors. Good luck with it!

    My first subaru was a BD5 legacy 1995 with a closed deck ej22t from a 1993 legacy ss. I ran as2008 legacy gt 5 speed and a rear r160 lsd and was fully rwd. The car made roughly 300whp and was tuned on 20psi from a vf48. Check out RobTune for first gen legacy ss turbo tunes and other Ej20g stuff if you are curious. I should also ad that I went through many axles and a rear diff before I sold the car. Very fun, but in the end, a Nissan r200 with custom axles would be a better option. Or just buy an sr20 240sx. RWD subies a fun though!

    Just a helpful hint, if you are using chlorinated brake cleaner make sure there is NO fluid left when you strike an arc or the intense UV will make phosgene gas. If you don't know what phosgene is, Google it. It's awful stuff.

    Thank you for your video, one phrase confused me a bit:
    you said: half of power will go to rear end, half to the front axle ( after welding) but if I understand everything correct, that after welding 100% of engine power will go to end and 100 to the rear. Correct me if I'm wrong

  • @fox10169
    @fox10169 7 років тому +15

    If you plan on keeping it rwd, I'd recommend taking the front diff out, it will cut out quite a bit of rotational mass

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  7 років тому +3

      +Fox Mense yea, I was thinking about that. I'll probably do that route the next time I have the transmission out of the car or on the next tranny I build. Know of anyone who makes axle stub block offs?

    • @fox10169
      @fox10169 7 років тому +2

      Dirtcheapdaily no, most people including myself just weld a circular piece of metal in where the stub comes out(preload adjusters) its easiest to do it with the preload adjusters off the car so it doesn't warp,expand and crack the case. Also if you go use a phase 2 tail housing you can cut out alot more rotational mass because you only need 3 parts for the p2 center diff to weld it up, you ditch all the spider gears, and clutch packs. A fwd impreza rack is said to have more angle vs the awd one so if your going to drift that would help out alot. Just a couple tips for ya! Love the chanel man!

      Dirtcheapdaily no problem, bud! If you plan to put an r180 in the rear you'll either have to swap to sti hubs hubs so you can use the appropriate axels, or get a custom race(theres a guy on nasioc selling them) for the cv that let's you use the outer r160 joint on the r180 axel shaft and inner joint. Or go baller status and buy the r200 rear subframe, I forgot the company that makes them but it will bolt right up to the impreza and use all the stock suspension components but will allow you to run an r200 diff out of a Nissan. You'll also need a custom driveshaft and axels which will run about 2,500 but you'll never have to worry about breaking anything. The r160 setup is just enough to handle stock na power

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  7 років тому

      +Fox Mense yea I've seen the subframe tss makes for the r200. that's the end goal hopefully, but I'll likely build it myself

  • @1337bender

    just as a heads up, you don't have to out the axel cup back on(the trans side at least, unless you have male axels) it will make no difference at all, it being in or out, it doesn't put any preload on the bearing, all its doing is sitting on the end of that output shaft

    You also should have cooked out that oil in the diff, that's one of the reasons you have so much splatter, it's the oil in the metal exploding/burning. your welds also aren't going to hold very long with oil intrusion.

  • @Amplar2
    @Amplar2 7 років тому

    By doing this on an NA subaru, do you get more power to the wheels? In stock form, power loss is around 25% due to AWD. Even a 10% gain from drivetrain slop would be significant for an EJ25.

    • @dionhamilton6821

    I have an audi 6 speed manual ,awd, that I would like to convert to fwd.
    I would like to install an lsd as well.
    Now I am mot looking to run fwd.
    What I am looking to do is use the transmission in a mid engine build.
    Porsche makes a tranny that will work but it is outside of my budget.
    I assume that this is possible.
    Hopefully someone will chime in with some useful info.

      Also, to get broken bolts out, get a centre punch, tap the centre of the bolt and then use various sizes of metal drill bits, I start with 3mm and work my way up. The bolt usually collapses when theres 2mm or less left on the outside. Tape the drill bit to the length of the bolt to prevent drilling through the length of the bolt.

    There is subaru. Front wheels are lifted on jack stands. Center diff is open, but if you press gas rear wheels spin and car falls off. If center diff is open shouldn't it send torque to front wheels? And why it's that? Please answer.

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  7 років тому +2

      +Gedas alekveravičius I have no idea why you'd try and spin just the front tires, sounds like a good way to get hurt.
      The majority of the power is going to the front, but on a manual transmission, the power is split 50/50 front/rear at all times, so the front probably did spin, but you dropped off the jack stands. Please don't do that again. The car is AWD, it needs 4 jack stands/lift

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  7 років тому +1

      +Guy Heidenreich without the axles in the front, it's basically just freewheeling. It's putting some power up front, but the majority of the torque will be coming through the rear. You can check out my manual transmission teardown video. Near the end, we go over a few options for RWD. You could pull out the whole front diff and plug the axle holes, but you'd still have an axle spinning up front that doesn't do anything.

      +Forged Shaft it took 4-5 hours before I could handle it without gloves, which I know doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot, but even if the welds do crack, there's not really any way for that diff to start turning with chunks of weld filling up the teeth.

      It'd be sweet to have solenoids that can lock the front inner hubs and still allow the outers to rotate so you could just flip a switch and go RWD on command.

      Same thing. You can get a fwd transmission, or just wed the center dif and pull rear axles.

  • @D-Mny
    @D-Mny 3 роки тому

    Actually you can do this with no welding what so ever. Just tap into the centre diff solenoid (just under the dash on the driver side). You can tell it to lock up (on demand at the flip of a switch) and voila RWD.. of course you will need to uninstall the front CV axles.

    PLEASE don't tell people to use brake cleaner before welding. It can break down into extremely harmful compounds such as hydrogen chloride and phosgene that can literally kill you or basically ruin your life with minimal exposure.

    Dude ... I get what ur trying to do and its sweet that you share it on the web to help ppl that dont know how. I also feel rwd subarus are not my cup of tea but i understand and applaude ppl that do it, its a very creative and cost effective way to have fun.
    However you should consider yourself an educator when doing this, you have to be aware that you have a rollmodel function going on.
    How do you justify, being an educator, hacking a job up like that ? The splitting with flat screwdriber, the horrible weld on the diff then saying its the machine, you knock off dust covers off of the cv-cups even though they serve the important job but you fail to machine down the cv-cup to cut down on rotational mass, you put cv-cups on the diff even tho that has no purpose other then eating hp in rotational mass , then you locktide a nut that should have no locktide at all because it has a splitpin and it will be hell to disassemble in the future but you dont torque down the locktide-d nut imediatly so it has time to set, not torqued and effectively taking away all the advantages of doing it in the first place?
    The one that really made me fysicaly sick was the fact that you put in a cv-cup with the actual cv-joint half assembled in the car ? Do you know what kind of damage hardened steel pieces like the crown or ball bearing or housings do when they fly out at 60mph ? I hope to odins beard it only damages the road surface or the car but if it hits you or bystanders you could end up in the hospital asking yourself why.
    Take your responsibility and take down or edit this video so people wont think its ok to use these dangerous methods !

    • @Dirtcheapdaily
      @Dirtcheapdaily  7 років тому

      Hey, thanks for the input! I've made a bunch of changes to the car and the RWD setup since I made this video. I'd already addressed most of the issues you brought up, but I never updated the video to reflect that. I just added a few on-screen annotations to clarify what was actually done, along with similar caveats in the video description. I always encourage viewers to do their own research and not to use my videos as their only source of information. My goal is to give that extra boost of courage to those who are on the fence about a project so they can enjoy working on their car themselves.

      I watched my dad remove exhaust manifold bolts from an antique tractor that had been rusting for 45 years. He soaked them in penetrating oil daily for 2 weeks and then rattled them out with an impact wrench.

      After reading your previous comments I can tell you are a real arm chair critic. In this case, you are not correct. The bearings are press in, but without the halfshafts to "pinch" them in place they will eventually just fall apart with side load ie: cornering.
