How to swap out a Subaru rear differential - Dirtcheapdaily : Ep.32
Вставка

- In this episode, Aaron swaps in a LSD into the back of the legacyGT for extra drift cred!
This video also explains how limited slip differential work and why you''d want one in your car as opposed to a welded rear diff.
Theres also a quick tip about reasonably priced aluminum rear end-links to stiffen up the handling on any subaru without breaking the bank!
Look for 2001-2004 Audi A4 or A6 front end links. They fit perfectly on the rear of 93-07 imprezas/foresters and 93-99 USDM Legacies, and are a great inexpensive upgrade to the OEM plastic end links.

Dude that Audi end link tip is fire! Cheaper than anftermarket Subaru plastic links even. Thanks. :D
Also, in doing some searching myself, I have also found these cheap aluminum alternatives to the extremely expensive performance brand parts. Front and rear for Subaru.

I did some more digging and you can get them for $10.80 each, front and rear, from Sears. Shipping is free for orders over $50, so find something else stupid to add to the order.

They actually list the same part many times at different prices for different model years. Silly. These are the cheapest.
We dropped the diff out of my 15 without having to fool with the hubs made the job a lot easier. Helped to read up about it on Nasioc before the swap.
Have a link for this read?
Omg this channel is so underrated it's crazy
Agreed.
Dude!!!!! Thank you so freekn much for this video. I'm swapping out my bad R180 for a R160 I bought off Ebay for 145 like uppit said it would be. But the part really like is the part about "sway bar end links". I was able to get mine off of a 2004 Audi S4. So anyone that can't find an Audi A4 or A6, it's the same part on the Audi S4. Thanks Again Brother.
just a hint you can leave the strut in place just pry the cv away from diff undo 6 bolts and the tailshaft pull out reverse for install
Hello fella, I've watched your vlog on replacing bushings in your gearshift linkage and thought this is my kinda thinking. I'm pretty good round a car but you're a lot braver than me. I own a 3rd gen diesel forester and have started familiarising myself with it but it's a different beast compared to normal cars. I totally agree with you using copper grease as it's the best. I put a smear on every bolt I remove/replace. Keep up the good work and vlogs. UK guy fan
I just bought some Audi front end links. Great info. So I use two wrenches on the small driveshaft bolts. With the can in neutral and all wheels off the ground, I can rotate the driveshaft by hand without the need for a 2nd person.
Or a flathead
This was very helpful in allowing me to understand the diff change as I am changing my outback to my old rebuilt brighton transmission, and I had to transfer the diff. Only issue is that I have to split the nuts on the rear as they are rusted on.
+Blaze Townsend glad to help!
super helpful when I changed out my entire transmission and rear diff last weekend, thanks!
+Greg D glad I could help!!
Not sure if I've left a comment, but thank you! Like your style and that's a shifty little trick using Audi end links (: not paying white line hundreds for endlinks. cheers
Just dumped my r180 4.44 out today using this method. Awesome vid man - keep them coming
Big thanks for that tip that Audi Endlinks fit this chassis. just installed mine
+joseph martinez glad to help!
I hope by now you know the secret of just sticking a pry bar in to the joint on the driveshaft to hold it from spinning instead of using the e brake.
Thanks a million for the video. This will help so much for removal of the rear diff xmember as well !!
Just want to say, keep doing your thing.
Great video and very informative. Will help so much in replacing my 2004 Forester Diff. Thank you.
fam remember you need to have a bump plate for your timing belt since its manual now!
Bump plate?
+PhantasmAMX yea, it's a little cover that goes over the top of the timing belt on manual cars. It's so your timing belt doesn't skip a tooth if it gets bumped when parked. I'm not going to worry about it since I don't leave it in gear when I'm parked.
Dirtcheapdaily Ah, when changing timing belts I hadn't noticed that. Interesting.
i love you bro keep crushing the game. oyesses audi end links
!!!
Im putting a used lsd to my coupe tomorrow morning since the the rear diff got messed up lmao. This looks super easy lol
looking back through this video for kicks. shoulda swapped for LSD axles
while installing it one can easily damage oil seals if You don't take off at least one drive axle out completely.
Wire brushing with both the drive shaft entries and the drive shaft support bearings completely exposed😱😱
Rust flakes + bearings🤔
You did not Need to remove rear lower arms. Only take off the rear diff. And propshaft. 😂
Thanks for the video bro! Was about to go pay to get it done
came here to see u change rear diff. but got way more. the endlinks. might try that. and finally understood lsd to another level now. lol keep it up man
+Dave Lee glad to help!
Pop a tab and you’ll fully understand
Need rear differential for 96 Subaru Impreza and gas tank
Hey man loved your video! Those say arm links at the rear, you were mentioning they come off an Audi. Will those fit a 02 forester body?
Are all Impreza differentials interchangeable? Serious question
Damn bro I don’t wanna do this alone
BEST CHANNEL. EVER. Thanks a million for the videos! Great, intriccate explanations, good shots and editing, you even like the same colors as me ::-D Keep it up (Subscribed)!
+Peter Barker thanks!
@@Dirtcheapdaily what cars can I get a 3.9 lsd of any type to install into my 1997 Subaru Impreza Wagon? Does have to be a Subaru? And can’t I just get a lsd from a wrx or sti and simply gut it out and change the final drive/ gearing of the 3.9 into it ?
Is that a aftermarket sway bar and if so were did you get it
I need to get me some annaseez!
I just bought my first subaru and it was fitted with cusco lsds front and rear and it sounds awful while making low speed turns. Grinding/clicking/popping... i cant imagine the gears are going to last any amount of time with these kinds of sounds... can anyone tell me whats wrong with it?
my car is subaru too, if I want to remove the rear diff out from car,do I must remove rear wheels first?? and put rear diff oil out? and how many other parts I must remove for rear diff??? please
How does installing a lsd in the rear all of the sudden make it rear wheel drive??
Was your LSD diff out of another Legacy, or a different model? No need to swap out the axles? I am going to swap an LSD diff from a 02 WRX into my 00 Forester, but not sure if I reuse my stock axles, or need to use the WRX axles.
Good stuff man!
Awesome job
could a ej205 5 speed JDM transmission work with a newer year STI LSD ? or i would need a 6 speed ?
I have a 2011 impreza. Would a rear diff LsD work on my subi?
Do you have any videos on the red wagon?
So no one is confused ,you CAN NOT (sanely) use a welded diff on the the street, awd rwd or fwd.
Shut up idiot, come to australia and you’ll see dozens of rwd cars with a welded diff
nice video, a little too much verbiage. But also, can't believe you didn't specify the torque specs. Otherwise, great job.
Did you just use rtv for the cover or gasket too?
So you didn't need to change the CV axles for the LSD? I keep reading that they need to be swapped. Does anyone have a idea. I'm about to swap a 03 Forester xs manual rear LSD 4.111 into my 99 forester L 4.111 open diff
+Jerry Maguire I've had people tell me I need lsd axles, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting power to both sides under load. That's how I was able to still drive it after I broke an axle
whats a good rear diff if im staying AWD
+Kahl Beecher any r160 that matches your transmissions final drive ratio.
Any LSD is better than an open diff. You can even get aftermarket bits that are a lot tougher too.
Where can I find this lsd @Dirtcheapdaily ?
Can you put a lsd in a automatic 4eat car?
Damn real stuff
Where did you get the differential?? eBay?
So. Did you take out a r160 and put in a r180? I have a wrx I'm trying to install the r180 in and my axles dont fit. I need to do a hybrid axles off a spec b legacy. But if your leggy has the wrx outers and the sti inners. I'll just buy those lol
Never mind they both look like 160s
He states in the video it's a R160, likely a 02-07 WRX rear as those years were VLSD on them. 2008 and forward WRX's went to open diffs font and rear and now use the anti- lock brakes to keep traction.
DUDE MAN- Please use wheel chocks when you are going to work under a vehicle. I am not trying to be a PITA-Just concerned about your health. It would be sad to loose someone that knows how to fix CHIT. GOOD DAY.....................Friend
For the life of me, I cannot get the nuts off of the lower strut bolts. I’ve heated it with a torch and sprayed pb blaster. Any ideas?
+Officer Nasty cut them off and get new ones. 👍🏻
Dirtcheapdaily finally got them off and finished the job lol it took a 2’ breaker bar and 4” cheater to get the nuts off
+Officer Nasty bleh. Throw antiseize on there!
Hi dude is tht posible to convert FWD to RWD with same FWD engine...?
Yes
Where did you find the torque specs for all of these bolts?
+Josh Dever pretty sure I pulled them from the factory service manual
Forester too?
I can't get my diff drain bolt off for the life of me, it's still possible to pull yea?
+Northwest Legacy if you're taking it out, you can just let the fluid come out when you pull the axles. Haha
+Dirtcheapdaily I'll do that
+Dirtcheapdaily I got it out :) now I wait for an open couple days to do the swap on my car!
What is the # of the diff and what did you get it out of?
He says it's a R160, look for 02-07 WRX rear diffs as those are factory rear LSD's.
What model subaru diff fits ina datsun 510?
Sounds like a good question to ask a forum
5:17 😂
factory VLSD? A welded rear diff would perform better
+FuJiNF true, but the VLSD has better all around drivability, especially through the winter. I have been on the lookout for a cheap rear diff to weld up and swap in for next drift season though.
a welded diff can not be used on the street.full stop.
i have a 98 subaru forester
so my 98 gt limited doesnt have lsd?
Jacob Regamey no, 90s Subarus didn't.
iirc maybe.
is the LGT a 3.90?
+TheXiodide no. It's a 4.11, but since mine is RWD, rear diff ratio doesn't matter
can i tell if i have a lsd just by the numbers or letters on the diff
+Ricky Santi I'm not totally sure. I just know how to tell by looking at the internals. You could try calling the dealership with your vin and seeing if they could tell you. Or try searching the forums. I think you can tell by the numbers, but I've never looked into it
LSD? Is it for legacy II ? Where can I get it?
Useful Information but stop rambling on about random stuff
Your worried about some rust on the diff and painting a girly blue cover when the whole rest of underside (in fact outside as well) of car looks like it does? HAHAHA Ever thought about wearing gloves? You know they are practically giving them away at Harbor Freight..
Hey man, the LSD should spin the tires opposite of each other. So when spinning the driver's side forward, the passenger side should spin backwards, this doesn't appear to be doing that
BS! The open diff works like that, the LSD spins same way. ;)
No, no it doesn't. To do this properly on a second gen legacy you need 02-07 WRX wagon axles. The stubs are different and the wheels should be spinning opposite of each other.
No .
you have no idea mate
😂😂😂👈🔥
Just get on with the job omg boring
