Note: This video is spliced. The goal of this video was to make an accurate representation of what a full 19x 120 star run would look like. Because it is spliced, there are many inconsistencies. For most stars and most of the castle movement, I was able to record the m64 with whatever star and live count were required. However, no m64 was available for some of the segments, so that's why the star and life counts differ. Also, some of the m64s were too long to record again, so I used previous recordings by other people. It is also worth noting that some of the segments are in the wrong region. This video is primarily on the NTSC-J version because spawning displacement is only possible on that version. Some segments are on the NTSC-U version because that is the version most often used by TASers.
Note: I have been working on this video for a long time. Because of this, the route I used was only optimized for A presses and time. However, according to Kierio04, newer routes define the A Button Challenge is defined as:
1) Optimise for A presses.
2) Optimise for frames holding A.
3) Optimise for time.
So while this is not a perfect route for the A button challenge, it is still close enough to an accurate representation of a real 120 star ABC run.
This video is not perfect, so please don't point out any small continuity errors.

The description contains a lot of useful information regarding questions you may have so be sure to read it all! The biggest differences between this video and a future version using updated strats is of course the definition of the A button challenge including optimising A hold frames before time and the potential for 5 more A presses being saved from TTC, BitFS, and LLL. These changes would switch up the route completely and so the order of courses and stars you see in this video would be suboptimal. That being said, what Wade said about time spent on this is true. He’s been working on this project for a while (hence why he used a route from March that didn’t include A hold optimisation, had 19xA instead of 14xA, and made several bad decisions that you can probably spot if you watch the whole thing), so even though you may not think this video should exist, it’s a very big undertaking and he’s done an extremely good job getting all these clips together and ensuring continuity accuracy where possible.

The run starting out with the PU-less SA entrance is very fitting. Sets the tone for the craziest speedrun category in gaming history quite well
Secret of the aquarium being first will always be funny to me. No easy 0xA stars to ease into the run. Starts with an almost hour long star strat that involves 3 levels and quite advanced techniques lmao
tbh, it may not be a bad way to start it. dont want to waste time doing other levels, only to get to SOTA and mess up halfway through te strat :D plus A press runs arent your typical thats for sure!

Thanks! The thing in BitFS was setting the HOLP for BitS. There was a pretty obvious cut there because no one has tased BitFS reds while setting the HOLP. If you have any more questions on how it works, ask in the questions channel in the abc and tasing discord server.

Yeah, it is. Although instead of splicing everything together in premiere pro, I’m going to only make 1 m64 file and use a lua script to change the rng and global timer so everything still syncs up. The final TAS is expected to be ~20 hours long, and encoding could take up to 80 hours because I can only realistically get around 8 fps when encoding with a lua script running.
@@Wade7_ It'll be very interesting to see the new full game ABC with the newest A press saves, but I will pray for your computer (and the hope that it won't get outdated like really really fast)
@@ANGH3LL1C420 I hope it won't be outdated soon either. I don't think there are any a press saves on the horizon that would change the route too much. Even if I have to resync everything because of an a press or major time save, it won't be that bad because there are tools to automate rng syncing. There aren't any tools to automate manually recording and video editing segments.
@@Wade7_ That's fair enough I guess, I just hope that the method you're planning on using will help save time on future re-records when those A press/major time saves arrive, because with people like Pannen, it's not a matter of if, but when.

at 16:36, what is the method used to gain height to get the chest star? in this (ua-cam.com/video/8raLW11g-M0/v-deo.html) video from pannen about the 19 remaining A presses (16 now) but its still relevant, that star is listed as A press number one, but that doesn't look like an A press.

According to the route I used, it would take around 20 hours. However, some stars were improved and have not been changed on the sheet, so the actually time is less. @@Wade7_ some stars were actually overcorrected for timesave and also some new strats will take a longer amount of time (e.g. BitFS, TTC). For the 19xA route somewhere between 20 (lower bound) and 28 (upper bound) hours is a better representation

I just had an idea for a tas of this game that would be neat. So the idea of it is that you are only getting stars which don't cause you to exit the stage. (I.E: 100 coin, toad, and mipps stars.) Tell me what you think.

Yo, I know you've probably gotten this question asked to you at least a thousand times but do you think you'll ever try to remake this insane compilation now that the A Press count is at a staggering 13 now?
I’ve gotten this question every time the a press count is lowered lol. But yes, there is one in the works. Right now I’m waiting for a comparable route to be developed. I’m also going to improve the visuals with an a press counter and an input display. We plan to have it done by the end of the year.

How are you able to dive recover without pressing A? I had to do it every time I tried because just using B did nothing.
You can always recover from a dive, (not a slide kick tho, you need A for that) with B in sm64. I’m not sure about the DS version, so this could be true for that version.
“Optimize for frames holding A“ is not part of the original challenge, and should not be considered. I understand the practicality, because it looks forward to an eventual zero A press success, but for the purposes of a TAS it shouldn’t matter.
If the frames holding A aren’t optimized, then once the first A press is done, A can just be held for the entire rest of the challenge, only releasing it for one frame every time a full A press is needed. I personally think that holding A for the entire run isn’t really in the spirit of the challenge when the goal is to not use the A button if it can be prevented.
