Maybe the greatest Rock Album of ALL TIME. 1) "Baba O'Riley" Daltrey's amazing vocals, and Moon's "new" rhythmic drumming style. 2) "Bargain", one of the earliest recordings of "double-kick" bass drums, (along with Moon's "Shakin' All Over" on "Live At Leeds". 3) "Love Ain't For Keeping", perhaps the most under-appreciated song on this Album. Notice how Moon plays a "lead-drum" duet with the guitar melody, while also managing to not overpower the beauty of the song. Another great Daltrey vocal too. (Next up, "My Wife" crazy drumming!!!!)
@@MrThumbs63 MAYBE you are right.... When asked which Who Album is my favorite, I always suffer. My other three best Who albums are Quadrophenia, Tommy, and Live At Leeds. But overall, I think Who's Next is just the most trim and perfect Album. It sounds like a "Greatest Hits Album" since every song is a monster. As for the best Album by other bands, my pick is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of the Moon". For "Folk-Rock, Dylan's "Blood On The Tracks".
I missed a few opportunities to see them in the ‘70s just by being complacent. Grateful I didn’t miss them in the mid ‘90s when they performed Quadrophenia, which I never get tired of listening to. They were simply amazing. I knew they would be.
!I saw The Who during this time period. The remarkable thing about them was that each member believed they played the lead - Keith, Roger, Pete, and John - and they did!
Performed this entire album live with my band a number of years ago. It was fun as hell. I ended up loving Bargain as much or more than the rest of the material - it's an underrated Who masterpiece. Great reaction. I always love watching drummers respond to Keith Moon. :)
"In life, one and one don't make two, one and one make one" - great lyric from Bargain. Three great songs from one of the best rock albums ever. Thanks Lee! ☮❤🎶
Bargain - I always used to program my cd player to skip it and play only Baba O’Riley and Won’t Get Fooled Again. Listening to it now…it’s so good. I love it!! I love whenever Pete sings, too.
Bargain shows off Keith Moon's drumming better than any other Who song, as excellent as he always is. One of my favorites from the Who, although not nearly as well known as it deserves.
Written as the opening song for the next Who rock opera (Lifehouse) after Tommy. Pete's two inspirations were an Indian master named Meher Baba and minimalist composer Terry Riley. Song initially inspired either by trash everywhere after the Who's Isle of Wight festival closing gig, or reports of the carnage and brain damage following Woodstock, depending on when Pete was interviewed. The repeating organ phrases using and auto marimba setting on a Lowery were a direct inspiration from Riley.
There's a straight line from Riley's 1969 album A Rainbow in Curved Air to Townshend's organ on Who's Next. Song title notwithstanding Meher Baba's influence comes through much stronger in "Bargain," a spiritual song in the guise of a love song (a territory mined so well by Richard Thompson) than in "Baba O'Riley". And don't forget a big hat tip to Glyn Johns for making the album sound so great, especially Moon's huge drums.
Roger did the live Baba outro on harmonica for decades but the wonderful Katie Jacoby has been performing that section on violin at all their gigs for the past few years. Great stuff 🎻
You're right that John and Keith play amazingly well together here. I think the reason, besides the obvious fact is that they are both the GOAT of their instruments, is how much they actually played together. In their early years, the Who toured CONSTANTLY. Then Tommy hit, and their touring became much more lucrative.
Besides this 71 has Led Zep 4, Pink Floyd Meddle, Black Sabbath Master of Reality, The Doors L.A. Woman, and The Stones Sticky Fingers. What a year indeed!
Every track is great. Purchased Who's Next in October 1971 (53 years ago!!! REALLY???). From the first drop on the stylus, it became my favorite album of all time. It remains my most played album and with meticulous care, I still have that original record
Saw the classic line up in HS late 70s. Saw them two years ago. Great show with local orchestra and Ringo's son, Zak, on drums. The young woman on violin was awesome.
Just to say that Glyn Johns engineered this album and the sound production is absolutely brilliant - for example, I don't think Moonie's drums ever sounded better - and all 3 tracks here sound so fresh and spacious
another classic! Wore this album out too in high school. Bargain is such a strange sounding but great song, soft-loud dynamics to begin the song and how it ends the same way, fading out quietly. Keith going nuts at the end of Bargain and that reverb giving it an airiness....love it!
Lee, as you complete each Who album (Beatles album, Stones album, Kinks album), listen to them all the way through multiple times. The amount of stuff that will reveal itself/songs that will suddenly kick in and become new favorites will amaze you.
Old man new sub. There is a synergy to The Who that is best explained by listening to all of what you can find. I love Entwistle's solo work probably more than any other member, and I own solo vinyl from everyone. The darkness is front and center with John. I mean, every first wave British Invasion artist was conceived around the end of WW2. Not a single one of them were raised away from trauma.
Great songs from one of their very best albums. As always, amazing songwriting from Pete Townsend and the entire band is on fire here. 🔥 Continue this magnificent album and I'll be here for it. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥
To win you, I'd stand naked, stoned and stabbed I call that a bargain The best I ever had The best I ever had. I often tell my wife she’s the best bargain I ever had. Then I duck! Great reaction again Lee. I hope you love My Wife next Wednesday. It’s time for the Ox to shine. It’s a lament about lost trust in their relationship. You may not remember but the Ho down part of Baba at the end is where Pete on stage does a kind of square dance with his guitar until it ends. Guaranteed to make you smile.
Hey Lee.. so great seeing someone like yourself appreciating these songs and bands that are so near and dear to us. For context, in 2002 after Entwistle passed, 2 days later, the band played the Hollywood Bowl. When they played “Bargain” it was the most emotional, striking performance. Townshend completely shredding, but also choking up as he sang his part in the song. It’s not just the music this band put out, it’s their history, their legacy, their story, that makes them so great. Please check out The Who, Hollywood Bowl 2002. “Bargain” will blow your mind.
This is arguably The Who's finest moment. It's their one album that's pretty much perfect from start to finish. Most of the songs went on to become staples on classic rock radio. It's also why a lot of us were "meh" when bands like Pearl Jam and the Foo Fighters came along. Been there, done that.
The creators of the CSI tv franchise were big fans of The Who - the original CSI show theme was Who Are You, CSI Miami was Won't get fooled again, and CSI New York used Baba O'Riley.
“Love Ain’t For Keeping” has to be one of their most underrated songs of all. Surrounded by all the great tunes, to me it still stands out. They played it in a pay-per-view concert in 1982, I think, from Toronto. They decided it was too short and added an instrumental verse.
Hi Lee. Hope all is well with you and your family. I was a massive Stones fan in HS. I graduated in 1975. There is a list of albums released in 1976. The list is huge!! I love so many diverse artists. I suggested The Rolling Stones song No Expectations. Great freakin song ❤
In the live version, Roger plays harmonica at the end. The studio version has a fiddle or fiddle like sound instead. Bargain reminds me of the music that would appear on their next album, Quadrophenia. Those 2 albums were their peak, IMO. Although they have many good songs before and after.
Pissing on the old by accident by the sheer chance of their music existing and being effective as it is. “Who’s next” to get pissed on! The who are taking on all challengers lol
The live version of ‘Bargain’ from San Francisco 1971 (easily found on UA-cam)……, STUNNING!!!! Worth a listen even just for Keith’s screaming while devastating his drum parts….
One of the secret weapons on this album is the 1959 Gretsch 6120 hollow body used by Pete on every track. It was a gift from Joe Walsh who told Pete the guitar which has a natural growl and depth to it would inspire him. He still says it his favorite guitar although it got knocked about quite a bit over the years. Good job Lee and keep goin coz this is a top to bottom classic LP.
Love this album. I dont know if its on this end or that one, but that synth on "Bargain" seemed way back in the mix compared to how i always heard it. Cant check my own copy. Lost that decades ago in split-up division of collection. Happened a lot back then. 😂
One of the first tracks to make use of a programmed synthesizer , and yet unlike many synth tracks, doesn't sound aged. It is perfectly used as an instrument and still sounds modern
One of the top 15 all time all the way through albums along with Aqualung, Paranoid, most of the Beatle albums and a few this old guy can't think of in this condition.
Read Pete Townshend's book. He says each band member would carry a case on tour with $75k-$100k for cash transactions. Met a girl from the audience at a show. Called her and they spent time in his hotel room. When he woke up she and the case were gone. Called her house, mom answered and said, "I know who you are. Go away and don't call any more...and you're NOT getting the case back!"
Yeah when I first saw the Sheperton Studio concerts in the movie The Kids Are Alright and Daltry did that harmonica bit where the violin went, it really annoyed me and i hated it. Now i love both. the synth in Bargain is an VCS3. oh- and Bargain is a Love Letter to God.
Keith’s drumming on Bargain has got to be one of the top 5 all-time rock drumming performances! 🥁💥
I used to "air drum" a lot as kid to The Who
He was incredible.
Who’s Next! One of the best, and my favorite Who album. That violin indeed.
The musicianship in "Bargain" show exactly how great a unit The Who were. A masterclass in dynamics.
Possibly the greatest rock & roll album
Other than Quadrophenia
Definitely on the list… blew out some speakers on this one
Live, Roger plays the ending of Baba O’Reilly on harmonica, in place of the violin.
Keith goes hog wild on Bargain.
Bro he was off the leash for that one 😂😂😂 so was ox. I love them working together. One of the most dominant rhythm sections EVER
Arguably the best rock album ever recorded.
I still have a few tracks to go but from the 5 I’ve heard I’m inclined to agree with you
Just baba and won’t get fooled again is a classic album alone lol
@L33Reacts my favorites on this album are my wife, going mobile (just pete and keith on this track)
Maybe the greatest Rock Album of ALL TIME. 1) "Baba O'Riley" Daltrey's amazing vocals, and Moon's "new" rhythmic drumming style.

Geddy Lee chose "Who’s Next” (1971) as the greatest work in the history of humanity.
Wow!
When Geddy Lee was asked what his "desert island" album is, he said "Who's Next".
You can’t argue with Geddy
This is a very special LP to us old timers from that period. A touchstone recording.
I had just started working in 1971 and remember saving money to buy this album. Could not believe how much I loved each song from the get go.
@@straya52I had to wait till ‘74!

Violin by Dave Arbus. Produced by Keith Moon. Bargain is my favorite Who song. The drumming is phenomenal.
