I think you're spot-on. Andersen's stories seemed to hold many secrets. If you re-read certain passages, the words take on new meaning. And you begin to see his real messages. Myself as an example: I am older, mature, wiser. I have had many experiences. I loved, & lost, the true love of my life. Today I find comfort in the videos of a Swedish angel. We both share a passion for literature & a thirst for knowledge. My hourglass is near empty, yours still holds much sand. Is this destiny, or just a chance meeting in time. Someday in the future, we will find the key that unlocks the answers to all our questions. Life isn't measured by the breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away.

It's certainly interesting how life takes us on new paths and unforeseen journeys. As soon as we try something new, we can never truly know what to expect. I'm very sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine how devastating that must have been for you. I feel honoured that my content has brought you comfort, truly! Although I'm not so sure about the angel epithet, heh 😊

I kind of agree with you I do like the original Disney version of the story after all it's kind of more or less a fairy tail story. The original version isn't that bad either but it's not more or less not for kids. I do like how original version author portrayed multiple endings where if she decided to kill the princess things would of turned out differently for her. I do like how the deal with the sea witch wasn't best deal but a solution to a problem. So was the fact that she love the prince but didn't know much about his whole world. In other words she was falling in love at the time but wasn't truly in love since she didn't know everything about his kingdom. I kind of wish there was more of a back story to sea witch or more of a back story of how or why mermaids exist in this world. Either way it's a great story to tell as Areil was always fascinated about unknown things and wanted to be different. The prince has his options but had too pick only one and is left kind of in the dark since he can understand Ariel much. The sea witch has solutions but not all solutions work out as we planed them to be. King Triton wanted Areil to be happy in there own world and live like he did as he lived a great life but didn't explore or get out much.

Would have loved some more backstory of the sea witch as well! But I do agree that it is a great fairy tale despite its flaws. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

this is just a modern fantasy about Andersen being a gay. Everyone and their mother are "gays" today but please leave alone historical figures

I would have preferred to see this version of the little Mermaid told rather then a live action remake that didn't need to be remade. This story is far more interesting.

Well, I do feel the original story would be more "real". I did love the Disney version as a child, but as I've gotten older I realize the Disney Little Mermaid was a bit self absorbed and selfish. Her family didn't seem to matter much in her adventures above sea, and she was so quick to give them up for some strange human boy. Call me weird, but i didn't find this original story dark at all. Just the true tale of, the grass isn't always greener, or be careful what you wish for. How did she expect this guy to fall in love with her ao easily. She didn't consider he may have already had a love interest or the fact he couldn't hold a conversation with her now that her voice and tongue (ouch) were gone. I know I'm going on a tangent here, but come on! The deal the sea witch laid out wasn't appealing at all. I just feel bad for her family who seemed to care a great deal more for her than she did for them 😔

I find it dark mainly compared to the Disney version. She went through so much suffering and in the end lost her life. Although the ending does help alleviate the tragedy.
I agree, it's really heartbreaking how much her family loves her and are willing to do for her, and yet she still chose someone who didn't love her back. It makes more sense if you look at it from the allegorical perspective that HC Andersen was gay. In that sense, it doesn't matter how much your family loves you and wants you to return to the "old lifestyle", you are who you are and love who you love. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🥰

@@ArnellaHobler In the older version it seams like suffering was the only way she could fall in love with the man of her dreams. The Disney version everything could be restored and brought back to normal if she meet the 3 day deadline in time or she would become a mindless sea witch zombie. Either way the deal with sea witch wasn't be best deal but a solution to the problem. The story doesn't dive into the possibility they could of left hidden messages for each other. Maybe that was a red flag from the start as how she wanted to meet him but he never came back to the spot. Though Ariel could of left flower or sea shells or gifts form undersea once she found his castle later on. Though the book kind leaves out cretin detail though.

it is not unusual for fairytales to end so dark. But if your only knowleadge came from Disney movies - then, yes, you are up to surprise

I am really enjoying your book analysis! I read this story as a child, and long before the movie was made. And I have always heard that The Little Mermaid was a religious allegory. Humans are unique- even more special than magical mermaids, because they have an immortal soul. But even though Anderson stops just short of giving the Little Mermaid an immortal soul, (she becomes a sort of air sprite instead) she is spared the fate of turning into sea foam because she is self sacrificing and refuses to do harm to the Prince that she loves. I believe the focus of the story is suppose to be more on the growth of her “soul” as oppose to her romance with the Prince…who is very two dimensional and a bit spoiled.

Happy to hear you're enjoying them! And yes, the allegory of the rewards of self-sacrifice is very prominent, and it makes the story a little less tragic. Almost bitter-sweet, in a way!
