I want to share my story so that others do not make mistakes. I suffered from serotonin syndrome after two weeks of taking Prozac, and then the doctor added another medication for me, which I took, and I had a panic attack, severe fear, and confusion, and I felt like I was going to die. I went to the emergency room in the hospital and met with another psychiatrist who had no experience. I told him, unfortunately, he said: I have anxiety that is not from the medicine. He gave me another medicine, so I believed what he said and I went into a coma due to serotonin poisoning. The medicine was withdrawn from my body, but I suffered from severe depression and anxiety after that because of this incident. I continued to suffer for years, and I am now fine, much better than before, and I am still recovering without any medications. An antidepressant. When I went to a psychiatrist, he went because I had a phobia of giving lectures at university only. I am very regretful and wrong for going to a psychiatrist. I lost 3 years of my life because of that.
A physiatrist isn't legally allowed to even prescribe medication, I don't know what country your from but nonetheless nothing sounds right in your comment.
Not enough attention is given to this. I had moderate symptoms from taking the therapeutic dose of my medication in combination with Advil, migraine medication, and alcohol I had the previous night before starting this medication. It was really scary and I almost called an ambulance but luckily the symptoms started to subside by that night. My prescriber cut my dose in half for a week but I had a lot of side effects that week. This was never officially diagnosed as serotonin syndrome… there are so many side effects of antidepressants and many that are listed to seek emergency care are also listed as common side effects. Please be careful; if you feel like something’s wrong, don’t take chances.
@Cheeseburge40718 took about a month in the PICU, then a week at a rehab hospital. He was able to start college on time however which was incredible. He really bounced back once everything was under control, but the process was tough. It helps to get dx'd early and get treatment fast. Huge props to the people at Albany Med also.
Thank you my dear for such a wonderful and helpful video!! Your videos by far are the best. Im 52 and my Dr just prescribed me Buspar 15mg. I also suffer from severe insomnia and take Lunesta 3mg. I don't think this would cause Seratonin syndrome, but just checking? Also is Buspar the safest medication for anxiety? Thank you and God Bless you
Hi Michael. Thanks for watching the video, glad you are finding the videos helpful. I hope everything goes well with your treatment. You are correct those 2 medications combined do not pose a risk of serotonin syndrome. If you are ever in doubt with other medications you can use the drug interaction checkers I provided links for above, they are free to use.
Hello, thank you for making this video. I’ve was prescribed sertraline and escitalopram last year and experienced very bad tremors. From shaking legs to neck jerking. I could not talk properly and would stutter or pause. I started to blink and felt I would have a seizure because my eyes would look up to the ceiling. My doctor advised me to stop. I think my breathing even changed. Should i bring up serotonin syndrome with my doctor? Because I have now been put on duciltia 30mg and started today and felt nauseous in the morning and feel my teeth chattering and wanting to shake my legs. If SSRIs and SNRIs are going to cause me tremors what group of medication can i look into?
Definitely discuss this with your provider. It sounds as though you are very sensitive to the increase of serotonin. Have a gene sight test to determine if there are any errors in metabolism. You could also consider an NDRI.
My 13 year old grandson was in icu because a facility overdose him he was in the hospital for almost a month now he has serotonin syndrome and nms syndrome combined it was a scary experience doc said if wouldn't have survived the night he had a feeding tube , a catheter, and in top of it he developed blood clots and was in blood thinners this happened in October 2022 up to now he had to go to pt and ot he continues to have weak muscle and can't remember anything it was like taking care of a baby this is serious 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Not enough practices relaying to each other, you could die because of each practice giving different medications and they'd ether blame each other or say the person overdosed, it needs more registrations.. SS
But but ... can we have serotonin syndrom when we lower antidepressants??? I had many of those symptoms when I tried to lower Paxil. I was at 5mg, tried to go down to 3,75mg in 2 months, and it was to fast. I had many of those symptoms. I went back to 5mg because it became unbearable and after 2 months back at 5mg, I was still having symptoms and went to the hospital to ask for a 10mg of fluoxetine to get rid of the symptoms for good. It's been 2 weeks and a half that I am taking 10mg of fluoxetine and the symptoms are worsening (insomnia, nervous system agitated, rigidity, exhaustion (hard to get out of bed)). Maybe it's that ... can we have serotonin syndrom when we lower antidepressants???
Hi! I've been having an adverse side effect with many SSRIs and SNRIs where my head feels like it's burning. I don't think it is serotonin syndrome, but possibly a serotonin sensitivity? Have you seen this before?
As per UPTODATE interaction checker, Esomemprazole can increase the concentration to Lexapro in your system leading to increase risk of side effects and toxicity which could be serotonin syndrome.
@LevelheadedMind I've been on Tapentadol for a couple of years now, prescribed by pain clinic, my doctor prescribed me with Sertraline today, so I'm glad I done this research, as he obviously has no idea I'm on Tapentadol and amitriptyline, and I had no idea that I should tell him.
Hello Please could you assist. I have been taking 150mg of tramadol or tramahexyl as it named in our country sustained release for about 12 years now. I recently had such bad panic attacks and severe anxiety. I decided I needed to start weaning myself off slowly. I am on a 100mg slow release now and my doctor has now given me 5mg of lexapro to assist me because the paranoia and severe anxiety has not gone away now for 12 weeks I am scared to take additional medication such as SSRI to assist me. Would I definitely be at risk of serotonin syndrome. My doctor said it would be highly unlikely
Hi, I have a question about using recreational substances like Molly or something similar, while taking antidepressants, specially something like Escitalopram and Vortioxetine. The Drugs Interaction Checker showed 0 interactions but it’s kind of hard to believe this combination wouldn’t be dangerous. I would assume that taking those party drugs alone could cause Serotonin Syndrome, am I right? Love your videos btw 😊
That's a good question and I'm not sure as different manufacturers produce them as generics and so there can be many additives and even dye variations.
Didn't know anything but I was found unconscious nearly dead on life support for 4 days I barely survived I wish my dr would have said something anything I was on busiprone zoloft and tramadol all at one along with about 9 other medications the er deemed intentional overdose that does not sit well with me
It's disgraceful, they just pump people full of anything they think that will stop a symptom, 'but not considering what else they're causing, 'that can be deadly. Always do your research.
can the body occasionally produce to much serotonin? Dr. thinks it may have happened to me. In my long life I have had attacks... once every 5 to 10 years.... but I had a bad attack months ago and rushed to the hospital..... tested everything but all came back good.... sent me home... no alcohol or drugs other than medical cannabis in my system... the only thing they found was my bp is high... so put me on bp meds..... well it happened again and the dr asked if I took anti depressants or herbal products?? I said no... never..... he thinks my body may produce to much serotonin every once in a while? any way all the symptoms are identical
If the therapeutic dose of your antidepressant medication is doing a poor job which it normally does in most cases I'd probably combine it with a multi strain probiotic supplement. And if that doesn't work talk to your doctor and change medications.
Don't worry, some people get absolutely no adverse reactions, I was on alexia, setraline and amitriptyline and had no side effects, in fact I even took cough medication while on all of the above.

@@Se7enthGyou are wrong. Psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medications.
You are thinking of a psychologist, they do not prescribe but can advise and counsel
Very good explanation compared to many other videos regarding this on youtube. Perfect place to diagnose myself.

My son is currently in the PICU being treated for this. It's terrifying.
How is your son doing after the experience with ss?

Yes, look for underlying issues such as vitamin deficiencies, inflammation, gut issues, thyroid problems, etc.

Do Esomeprazole and Lexapro cause SS if taken together?

Is there a test /(blood/urine?) that would indicate if you have too much serotonin in your system?
Yes, the OATS test. If you live in the US you can get it here labs.rupahealth.com/store/storefront_V423dbG?storefrontProduct=strprod_V7rEP1M
What does “OATS” stand for?
What anxiety med doesnt raise Serstonin? I was in icu after zofran and oxycodone promethazine. Im so sick. Now latuda is making me worse.

Take them with caution as it may also increase serotonin, so look out for the symptoms of serotonin syndrome.
