I have been playing double bass since about 2012. Before that, it was fiddling and bluegrass, and long before that, it was jazz band in high school, graduated 1975. Wrist had problems, so, in 2018, set down the fiddle and now doing cello and mostly double bass for church services. Most songs are straight 4/4 or 3/4, or 6/8. Nothing jazz, which is okay, but I try to incorporate a few jazz licks here and there as it fits, but also to not be obnoxious. Whatever enhances the songs is my goal. Being in God's service with church music is a joy to me.
Thanks Geoff!! I'm a jazz pianist and have picked up the double bass just for pleasure (you can't beat those fully fat belly pleasuring root notes) and these short "exercise" lessons are great!! Knowing my theory your tips are helping me progress well at home (family and kids are time consuming), but once in a while I turn up to my db player and ask him to check up on me. It's a shame I can't "double" my self playing both the bass and piano.
Yes, First Position starts on the note A on the G string. Half Position starts on the Ab. Both played with the 1st finger. It’s a bit of a confusing system but widely used.
@@AmaralBasspositions are numbered on the A minor scale on the G string. 1st position: index on A; 2nd position: index on B; 3rd position: index on C; ... Notice that the distance between position is no constant. For example between the 2nd and 3rd there's only a semitone while between 1st and 2nd there's a tone. The position in between are called Half positions. For example index in C# is the 3rd half position.

Nice!
Is the first position starts on A on the G string? I got confused... for me the first position would be starting on Ab

Bass God
Geoff! You should name the song !! :)
where did you get your bass from
It's a German bass which is about 100 years old. It's had a lot of work done such as a new front and neck graft and I've had it for about 15 years.
hardly beginners stuff.
