Their own distillates have gotten nothing but great reviews. Their MGP sourcing was a stopgap measure until they could do it all inhouse. It's expensive so it took time. New Riff is doing the craft distillery thing very well.
well said
Their stuff looks very good. I understand they source all their rye grain from German producers. Wish they would get it somewhere in the US. Even better would be locally somewhere in KY.
New Riff is doing some special things.
I was lucky enough to get a bottle before it sold out; looking forward to the right occasion with the right people to open and enjoy it.
This review is older, but I’m wondering if I would enjoy this bottle if I enjoy Little Book Chapter 7, which has some straight malt finish? Took a flyer on my first Little Book in the Ch 7 and it’s my favorite pour this year.
I think I NEED this in my whiskey cabinet. 🥃🥃
Got two bottles from their gift shop (6 miles from my house). Haven't opened either yet as I have a lot of open rye's. Look forward to it. Biased as they are local but think New Riff produces good stuff.
I live in Covington, if you like rye, Boone County has a single barrell rye that I've only ever seen at the distillery, also great and a kind of hidden gym to me. (call ahead to make sure they have it, ive called before and gotten "not right now, but give me an hour to start bottling some" as a response.
@@RJN9008 Thanks, never been down there but I should.
Some bars in my area are making Old Fashions with New Riff. I'm still trying to find Old Forester Rye in Missouri.
Tried this at the distillery, and it was excellent. Not strange at all, unliked their peated offerings (and I love peated scotch)
I agree that it doesn't taste like a Rye whisky (compared to Bardstown Origin Rye at 95% unmalted rye). I like it a LOT though .
Just ordered my bottle. I’d love to know if you ever figured out the mystery spice.
Incredible juice! Spot on, Fred. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on one. If you want in on the early notifications on releases and can get to Newport, KY, then I recommend joining their Whiskey Club.
The flavor profile will come to you at exactly 4am the morning after you’ve met with other bourbon enthusiasts to discuss it in great depth lol. Great review thanks!
OMG, so true!!!!
Did you ever figure out the spice note?
Just cracked my bottle and I got a toasted oak influence. Also was done blind and was surprised at it's lack of rye-ness. But good effort by New Riff once again
Loved it, great review. I've seen New Riff on whiskeytube a few times but haven't been drawn to want to try it until today. I was thinking- oh, another sourced mgp, boring, not interested. But now that they're making their own stuff, and hearing your review, I'll be picking one up.
The flavor note you were looking for intrigued me. I've never heard balsamic vinegar used as a whiskey note before, but dropping that right before saying glazed donut I was like- I know exactly what he's talking about! If you made a venn diagram of the flavor wheels of balsamic vinegar and a glazed donut, then I'd put the intersection around cashew and/or yeast. I was going to say marjoram but I think that's maybe too sharp... Looking forward to hearing what it is when you find it.
Sooooooo, did you determine the mystery spice?
Drinking some Old Overholt ryes. The PA 114 proof 4 year old and 11 year old special releases. Was finally able to get up to PA over Memorial day and grab these up. Not MGP rye either.
I have discovered that I am no purist. I like the direction bourbon and American whiskey is going. I like finished whiskeys. I like innovation.
Fred I think the main question is should I buy this? How does it stack up against Westland or Rua?
Westland and Rua are whiskies made from malted barley. This New Riff is malted rye. The New Riff is aged in new charred oak, whereas Westland uses used or a combination of new and used barrels. I'm not sure what kind of stills Westland and Rua are using, whether they use copper pot stills or not like traditional single malt whisky.
If you think of the Spice in the middle of the night. I don't want it in the comments. I want to see an all caps no context Tweet from you at 3am in all caps! Lol. Love the review and love to hear whiskey just describe whiskey! The thought of sitting around just talking about whiskey taste sounds amazing! I currently have to do it on my own. Looking forward to more reviews and interviews!
See, that's what I'm talking about. I love when something falls within a certain category but it's an outlier. Challenging you in a good way. It seems I need to get aquatinted with this bottle. Cheers!
Sounds pretty fantastic. Definitely will give it a try if i can find a bottle.
Did you ever figure out what that mystery spice was?
Nice to see that even you Fred can be stumped? LOL! Nice review enjoy New Riff a lot!!
I believe the only thing similar I have had is Old Maysville Club from Pogue.
Hate to say it, but I genuinely think your new cell phone videos look and sound better haha
I just posted my review of this great whiskey, and wanted to see what others thought. Great review my friend.
Fred, I too was perplexed. I think a higher proof would've helped.
Time to open mine and try it 🤤
Nice haircut 🙌
Fred's reviews are informative. But, he barely shows viewers the bottle and bottle label. He needs to hold the bottle center camera and steady, or set the bottle in the camera view, for full minute so that viewers are familiar with the product.
I know I know. You’re like the 5 millionth person to tell me. Guess I will start doing it
@@FredMinnick happy to provide any additional feedback.
@@FredMinnick no way, the website will give all the photos we need. There's no coloring and no chill filtering so all we need to know is the proof, who really distilled it and if it's got a fancy finish..
If I would have written down my thoughts prior to your comments, I could honestly say "You took the words right out of my mouth!" This one will stump the traditional rye drinker. DO NOT use this for a cocktail. Enjoy it for what it is.
ITS CHINESE ALLSPICE!!!
Darn! Sorry to steal Danny's comment..."Can't get in Idaho".
Dill!
Cinnamon watermelon?
It's a cravat, not an ascot.
