    I walked the CREB track, back in 1982 when the power lines still ran up that way. It was an awesome walk. Back then, the electricity board had an old WW1 tank that they used in the wet season for line maintenance. Oh, and not one car passed me in either direction over the 2 days.

      That’s is so interesting, it would have been a much different trek back in the 80’s. Sounds like the perfect place to be 😁

      @@Keithy_W I was surprised to see that they've been grading/dozing it. I saw images a while back where the jump-up was an absolute mess from people attempting just after the wet season. Silly buggers.

      @@Keithy_W I knew people that lived near 'Pole 89(?)' which is near Gold Hill. We tried to drive up there once after some rain...still impossible. We tried for about two hours to get up the jump-up because it was only another 5 km to the camp. In the end, we had to go back and drive the long way 'round. That hill was super-slippery when it was wet :)

    Awesome video mate, did the creb track dry season 2019 on our way to the top. I was with a group of enduro bike riders, spectacular views up round the top of the track, very similar to bush areas of Nz. As much as I enjoyed the whole trip, doing the Frenchman’s and the telegraph track an all the infamous water crossings, the creb track was by far The most scenic of all, next time I think I’ll spend more time around the Daintree and cook town district.

      It would have been an epic trip on a bike! Definitely on my list too. I agree, the CREB has some great scenery and a general atmosphere that makes you want to keep going back

    I'm heading to Cairns next winter in a stock NX Pajero with AT tyres. I was going to do the Bloomfield track but am a little nervous about attempting the CREB especially solo.

      You will get through the Bloomfield no worries. So long as it’s not belting rain. The CREB though, maybe if you could find someone else in the area who is travelling through?

    10:00 Mate, in the tourist season we used to get cars stopping IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD on the main street of Cooktown to stop and take photos. And yeah, I've had it on the road from The Lion's Den to Bloomfield before they put down bitumen. Tourists stopping in the middle of the road to take photos...

    We were up there from Melbourne in 1976, and were told we could get to Cooktown in our HR Holden, by a local on a motorbike. Looking at it now I’m so glad the old man decided against it before the Daintree River crossing.
    Has anyone ever done it in a normal car?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  2 роки тому

      It would have been a much different experience back in the 70’s. What a great time!
      From all that I’ve heard over the years the creeks and Daintree River stops normal cars from getting to the track. If they could get over the water, the track itself is often more difficult than a normal car would be able to drive.

    Gday mate do they ever open the track alittle earlier as I'll be there mid may?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  2 роки тому +1

      G’day mate, often they don’t open it early. For the better part of the dry season they repair the track. It’d be hard to predict this year, it changed hand back to the traditional owners last year. The optimist in me would assume it may open late August/September, but it’s anymore guess.
      You could chance it and arrive in hopes it opens early, but definitely don’t drive it without permission - they will not stop to ask questions while they drive the bulldozers to repair it.
      Cheers
      Keithy

    Hey mate, great video. No macho "send it" BS, just good info. Just a couple of questions as a do a lot of solo trips: what are the most challenging sections of the creb? And is it wise to do it without a winch if going solo? Cheers!

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks mate, appreciate it 👍🏻
      The CREB is pretty basic, as far as tracks go. The weather is the challenge. If it’s wet, even if I had a comp truck I’d be steering clear. It’s a slip-n-slide with a fart of water.
      There are a few small creek crossings, although not extremely deep, they can be a challenge if you’ve not done that before. Crossing the Daintree River can also be daunting. Take a curved line through the crossing (it keeps the depth low) and you’ll be right.
      You should be fine without a winch as long as you have a 4wd with good all-terrain or mud tyres, and it’s not wet or even damp.
      Cheers
      Keithy

    Can you tow a camper on this track?

    • @Keithy_W
      @Keithy_W  3 роки тому

      No you cannot tow a camper on the CREB track, it’s too steep and dangerous.

    • @petergregory8864
      @petergregory8864 3 роки тому +1

      You can take a camper trailer, as long as it's dry. Have done it many times. But with oncoming traffic makes backing up a bit tricky! If it's wet forget it! Unless you have wheel chains.
