Amazing Indoor-Outdoor Architecture Near Venice Beach

- In designing a home for one of Venice’s typically long and narrow lots, Ehrlich recalled lessons he’d learned from the local architecture of Nigeria and the courtyard layout of houses in the medinas in Morocco. He calls his approach “multicultural modernism.” The result is a house that takes advantage of the climate and that uses natural systems and technology to boost the home’s efficiency.

Beautiful design. I love how eclectic it is, yet it all works together.
It's like living in a piece of art
I've heard the phrase "lifestyle porn" before. Didn't know what it meant until now. Wow! What a beautiful home and the couple just seem so amazing and thoughtful. I am trying to get ideas for what I want my home to look like. This is an amazing video!
So impressed, I watched it four times. Love that it has no paint. I wish I could have seen the powder room, and master bedroom.
Wow.. just wow... I would love to design my own house even though I'm not an architect!
Really thinking about making a tiny house to keep myself dept free to survive my mid 20's and 30's ;p
Roy Wardenaar It'd be worth the investment! Also, you dont have to be an architect to design a house :)
Roy Wardenaar that's really a good idea me too I'm in my teens but I could make it for my 20s sure is a great experience to travel in my country (:
absolutely, all you need to do is to feel the space and adapt it.
*‘Ehrlich’ means ‘honest’ in German .... one can feel the authenticity of the man! It doesn’t get any better than this!!!* _Brilliant!!_
I want to be an architect by just watching this! They transform art into real life!
When he said "no paint" I started really paying attention
This was so artfully filmed -- and without the style getting in the way. And I loved the details about the cement blocks and the choice of materials and finishes.
so everyone will ignore the sentence, "we want to preserve the trees because they were here first"? what a beautiful line.
This is first time am providing a comment publicly. This place is really soo lovely. Awesome. :)
This house might be my favorite of all time. Only thing missing is it needs to be transported to a beach somewhere, or a cliff overlooking an ocean...but goodness gracious PERFECT combination of in/out!
I am currently doing my 2nd year in Architecture. I'm doing a project on a shop house and this house has been my inspiration since everr. I really want to design something influenced by this beautiful residence ❤️
how much time and effort does it take to locate all those beautiful pieces of furniture and Ornaments? it's like they complement the house and each over but are very unique in thier own right. I know damn well you can't get that type of furniture in ikea
I was thinking the same, it's an amazing home. It has to be all of the travels, experiences, and people they have met that led them to having the ornaments over the course of so many years! Every single piece very much speaks it's own story
That's how beautiful houses are made. It takes years of travel, change, improvement. And it takes investment in beautiful pieces and art, one at the time. You could perhaps find some cheaper wall hangings when you travel, but you won't typically find them in a hotel store . You have to move outside and look for local artists and crafts men.
Ikea makes me scream. It takes hours to get out of that endless, winding Maze. One room leads to another, with no way out😠
Amazing. How do you deal with bugs, mice, bees etc in that type of home?
I think houzz should show more of the house with their voice over. so we get to see more of the house. my fav thing about the house is the octogenarian tree and least favourite was the glass bridge, not really comfortable when u r wearing skirt and people are below. great that he didnt use paint
I have never seen such an inspiring, creative, playful interior design!!! It's a courageous fusion of an unforgettable adventure with the joy of life - but what a wonderful life! 🍀 Bravo! Thank you,
Well Said Mate, Cheers
very stimulating
breathtaking! would not work here in Malaysia though due to the mosquitoes and threat of dengue etc.
Same in Pakistan
This is one of the most beautifully uniquely designed homes I’ve ever seen. The innovation, detail, global influence and use of space texture and material is simply devine. What talent he has! I’m definitely watching this multiple times for inspiration.
I have always been wanting to become an architect, and actually lost hope of becoming one ever since I started IB last August 2016. This video really inspired me, and pushed me more to become an architect all over again. Thank you so much.
I didn't go for architecture because of my high school mentor who said there is no good living in architecture because the Chicago market is over saturated. As much as like what I do, this is the biggest regret of my life. If you have passion and determination for what you do, you'll enjoy it and you'll find a way to make it work.
Same😁😁😁
Make sure you wear something properly when you walk that bridge :)
I love this house. Using the trees as part of the home instead of cutting them down.
To me, it’s breathtakingly beautiful!
I love the glass bridge
This is an insanely beautiful house.
I met him once when he was giving a lecture in Melbourne Uni. Nice person who emphasise on material honesty and a true believer in the courtyard house. I even had him signed my copy of his book. I always use this house as an example of composition of elements of design.
I love the indoor/outdoor elements. I think it would be neat to use conex containers to create a house with courtyards and different pods somewhat like this. We have so many of those shipping containers sitting around, it would definitely be environmentally friendly.
So inspiring...love the courtyard design and the entire philosophy of design that is so beautifully articulated in the space.
wow so detailed love the no paint
Master overall design. Inside and out. Really like the exoskeleton and interesting surfaces. Perfect.
I'm becoming obsessed with semi courtyards. Indoor spaces that seamlessly meld with outdoor spaces. To be in your living room and be sitting outside at the same time is incredible.
This man is a genius really. How gorgeous is his design and he gets to live in it!
Wow this house looks so beautiful 🙌💚
I am absolutely in love with everything about this house 😍😍😍
Pretty awesome. You transfer imagination into the real. The strongest connection between outdoor indoor. Super detail in every aspect, high art, comfort .. etc, and more... and so on.
omg its my dream house!! i found this house in a magazine here in new zealand and fell in love.. i never threw the magazine out because it really embodies the house i wanted.. i'm glad to have seen it in video form
beautiful place. 💙
but can we talk about the strange clocks on the wall fighting with each other?
i like the concept of this house where nature collides with your house, but i hate the fact that this house is loaded with stuff. I can barely breathe when i watched the living room area. But the pool with cactus on the background is cool.
Wow😦, there just had to be 1 person that didn't like this beautiful house.
Stunning home. So much depth and symbolism was incorporated into the design.
What will happen to the couch when it is raining?
GAMING KOH the cushions look removable.
I think it's a special couch made for outdoor
Water proof
waterproof outdoor fabrics....
This is the perfect visualisation of my dream house. It looks unreal! ❤️
One word "Incredible"!
Perfect, out of all the great homes I've ever seen in my life this is probably the best. Only thing missing is a hifi set up with a turntable and a few thousand records.
Amazing design! Just perfect!
I've watched this video so many times already, and I keep coming back. I just love this house!
I love, love, love this house. It has many elements that I'd like in my own dream house.
love it
Wow! This home is so beautiful and the stories behind it made it more special.
of all the random house videos I keep watching, I like this house the most. Modern, happy, and bright.
Exactly how I would love to build homes:for everyone.
Colours 😍😍😍😍😍
After watching so many minimalistic contemporary bel air /beverly hills houses
my eyes were almost dry
Wow. This is one of the most beautiful homes I’ve ever seen. I wonder the size of that enormous window..
i lived in morocco also for a short term and Rabat, Casablanca inspired me
I wonder about the noise level since it's on a busy street. It is beautiful!
I just love this house. They look warm and friendly and it shows in this space. Now all I need is a lottery win and where do I sign!
Incredibly inspiring , love the ingenious use of materials both natural and man made all designed to flow seamlessly from season to season . I am in Love with this :)
I love their home and will incorporate some of the elements in my own home.
Reminds me of the series "Californication".
Hank? 'you there? 😆
This is still one of my favorite house! I keep coming back to watch this video
First time i see, i think i student architect then i will create and design in the future of my life,

Love this. Speaks to my architecture heart.
multicultural modernism - this is perfect!!!! i feel like i have an expression to describe the type of design i'm attracted to know
I totally agree! I just saw this video and immediately sent it to my husband saying 'the is it! Multicultural modernism!" Absolutely LOVE this house :)
very beautifully constructed house
looks like great lobby but it would hv been better if we could see the bedroom/bathroom so that we can see how they integrate such a private space with this open concept
3:25 bald guy looks like a Marvel super hero. :-D
that house is phenomenal, thank you for sharing. with warmth and love from South Africa:-)
Amazing. Love the way it connects with nature and the nice mixture of multi-culture design & colors.
Frank Lloyd Wright - eat your heart out!!! 😁
Fabulous! Seriously it is amazing
Such a beautiful house. It has everything that I love, in it. From the walls and stairs, to the outdoor and indoor spaces. Those trees are magnificent !
I just love it all. ♥️
Please adopt me! Omg everything about this design and style speaks to me. We are on the same resonance ! Bravo guys, bravo 👏🏽
Amazing! 🤭🧐🙂 plaster walls sealed with wax, the outside wall materials, the composition of the block ! 👌🏽
I love the little details like the text on the glass door frame and on the bottom of the stairs!
Love the pods...I’ve lived in loft spaces and sometimes it’s just grounding to have a sub-space with a door you can close as well. Love the color palette. Rich and warm and balanced so as not to be in-your-face like.
See...I would move back to LA just to be able to live that connected to that kind of nature. Alas! 🙂
Preciso de uma desta!
I wish courtyard houses were common in the US
Very nice design.. there is an open flow of energy inside the house..
Nice house....so beautiful...
Beautiful, wayyyy too many stairs
this video has had a significant influence on my life
I visited this house when Dwell organized house tours throughout Venice Beach and Santa Monica. It was my favorite and feels like a real home that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor space. It is very private from the street which reminded me of homes I visited in Marakesh. Steve Erlich is an amazing architect!
My dream house..
IM super impressed with their art collection and use of materials and colour. It's clear that they're rolling in the dough. The indoor outdoor play is magnificient. Thank you for doing this feature.
Beautifully done. Also love it when art is from going thru life, not for decorating a space. That said: up to a 100 people he said. Hope they took a Lyft or Uber, because Venice neighborhoods are not known for their street parking, haha.
Close to nature 🌹 good job 👍
omg...just the dream house!:)amazing architecture...❤👍👍👍👍👍👍
Beautiful design
I WANT THIS HOUSE.
(Yes I'm sure everybody does too, lol!)
Just wow, wish I could live real close to nature like that and breath
Awesome
Those are my colors. Love it!
Finally a colourful house! Beautiful work.. 👌
Besides the point, but i love her blouse so much!
I want this kind of house....
one of the most beautiful house I saw. perfect living space connected with nature.
I want a house like this in the near future
With all these big door glasses, how do you manage insulation and inside room temperature vs. Energy spent ?
superb
Never seen anything like this. So much amazing. Thanks for the ideas.
