- Starfaring was the first science fiction role-playing game (RPG) published, released by Flying Buffalo in August 1976. Although it was the first to market, it didn't attract an audience, and was soon superseded by the much more popular Traveller published the following year.
Starfaring is a two-player science fiction RPG "loosely based on Star Trek" that is set 700 years in the future, after humanity wins a war against robots. The world government loans money to adventurers so they can buy a small spacecraft and travel through a nearby stargate to explore space. The book includes information on:
creating scenarios
building ships
creating crews and characters
weapons and conflict
rewards
stores
psionic powers
hazards
random star locations, star types, star systems, and planetary types
life among the stars

This channel is like a ttrpg treasure trove; a window into this hobby's evolution. It's fun to learn about these old systems lost under the dust of time.
Thank you, very much appreciated. I love looking back at these older games, especially something like this which is still Roleplaying, but very different to the traditional troupe play.
Wow! I've been playing RPGs since the 70s and I've never heard of this one either. Thanks for finding it!
I'm loving making little discoveries like this and sharing them, as it's a whole load of roads not taken.
I looked at the old cover and thought it said StapFaping at first glance. Bit confusing.
I think that would be a very different game.
Do you have any videos on any RPGs which use the Ubiquity system?
I don't. But actually had suggested only this week that I cover the Hollow Earth Expedition RPG, so I'll be putting that in a poll and see if people are interested.
It's always interesting to see these games that have come out at a time where Star Wars wasn't even out yet. And in the collective consciousness there was essentially just Star Trek in regards to science fiction. Well, that and 2001: A Space Odyssey. Okay, and Planet of the Apes. But not much else!
I'm a Brit so want to shout out Doctor Who, but I guess that's not traditional SF. And while there's a load of older 60's shows, they don't really match traditional SF either (Land of the Giants, Lost in Space, etc). So, yes, I guess Star Trek was the main SF influence out there in the 70's. And looking at the number of unlicensed Star Trek board games and RPG's in that era really does show that.
@@RPGGamer Oh, right, there were those shows too. How could I forget? All Irwin Allen's, I think.
There was also (as I was reminded just yesterday) The Time Tunnel. But apart from Lost in Space... Well, Space: 1999 might have been another property in people's minds in the early 70s and before. Maybe that and Trek might have been things that would influence SF RPG players because of the ensemble nature (I think? Never watched Space: 1999).
@@allluckyseven While Space 1999 was in the 70's (and that fashion had 70's all over it), I think it was the later 70's, so wouldn't have had much influence in the early rpg's.
Pretty cool, pretty cool
While basic, there's a load to love in this as it's so very different to most other RPGs.
@@RPGGamer have you playtested it with someone
@@Lbf5677 I haven't.
