This is what I've been looking for! Thank you so much for this lovely example and break down of what you did and with what tools you used. Ill be referencing this video many times.
Thank you for sharing your gifts! I’m a beginner and videos like these are priceless in learning, are you self taught? Beautiful design and incredible skill!
I love your video. I just made my first item using the lost wax casting (a 157g belt buckle silver) I enjoy so much that I will like to keep casting. This is interesting since it saves time in setting the stones I like to learn more about it. Thanks for your video I learned so much and it is very encouraging.
Hand Carving will never completely die. There is always going to be a core group of people who want that piece hand carved by an artist with love, time, and soul. The rest will save nickels and shop at the local giant dept. store.
I know this messages old you left it long time ago but I agree 100% I am master jeweler and no one comes to me and ask me that they want to learn this kind of art so I agree with you
Hi - nice work I have a question I'm new to jewelry why would you go through that much effort to create this wax model when there are so many wax models available unless it's just something specifically to this design? Thanks -
Felicidades por tu trabajo y muchas gracias por compartir tu trabajo con todo el mundo! y sobre todo con los jovenes q queremos aprender el oficio. Gracias
Thanks for taking the time to comment :) I have the habit of leaving the surface rough and finishing the casting with filing, sanding and polishing. I also like the effect of fire polishing a wax model.
I used the lost wax casting method, also referred to as investment casting to cast the wax model in white gold. A rod of wax, called a sprue is added to the model and it is put in a steel flask that is filled with a special type of plaster called investment. The end of the sprue rod is left exposed. The investment is allowed to dry and the flask in put in an oven that burns out the wax which leaves a void where the model was. The molten metal is poured into the void through the space left by the sprue rod.
Hi l love your work, do you know where can I buy the wax? Im in Mexico, maybe the brand´s name? any info on it would help me a lot, please this is for a school project
Here is a slide show of the making of a 20 stone version of this ring that shows the as cast ring, stone setting and finished ring. ua-cam.com/video/iB4mUqd35TU/v-deo.html

The wax is a special type that is made for carving models for jewelry. The stones are set after the piece is cast for this project. www.freemanwax.com/ferris-file-a-wax-carving-milling-waxes.html
A wax model can be made, modified or repaired by adding molten wax to the model. To repair a broken prong I would suggest using a scrap of the wax used to make the model or the broken piece. A small heated metal tool would be used to fuse the two parts together. A wax pen or flame heated wax modeling tools are the most common tools used. The weld can be built up by adding molten wax until it is slightly larger than the original prong and then filed down to the finished shape. It is important that there are no air bubbles or voids in the weld. A heated needle or very small wax modeling tool can be used to get rid of small voids.
I never heard of Wx carving before, and i think your Video is Amazing!!! And by the way i love your Guitar playing. Do you cast the ring at the end yourself? or do you send it to somewhere to get it cast?
The air lines are a design element that adds visual interest to the ring. They also make the top of the ring lighter along with the hollowing of the upper shank so the ring is less top heavy. They allow air to pass through the ring to mitigate moisture buildup.

Thanks for the comment, I too have observed the music and jeweler connection.
Nicely done - I watched the "finished" video, and the ring is beautiful. Thanks for sharing your talent(s) with us.

I have to wonder if you aren't a dieing breed. The art you do seems a perfect for a 3D printer. I hope the art can stay alive.
You are right, what I do is being replaced with 3D printing and Cad Cam but I don't think hand work will disappear completely.

The prongs on this ring are sturdier than the typical mass produced version of one similar to it so it will last a lot longer.
@@lithohunter makes total sense thank you Steve

How did you add gold into the wax? Are there casting machines to do this for you? or a Jewelry Cad Cam Machine?

I wonder if I could do that quicker hand fabricating it.

Waste of time doing in wax to start with, now to cast and clean up casting when same results would be achieved using preferred metal.
