H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is week 143 (of 291) for our favorite classic game show. These episodes were taped on April 4, 1976 and first aired in mid-May of 1976. Once again, our three stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces. They are joined by: ~~Semi-regular Patti Deutsch, who last visited three weeks ago. She is 1 for 2 in the head-to-head match, and this will be her 22nd week of 42 total. Will she ever earn 3 matches and advance to the big leader board? ~~Tom Poston, making his MG debut. His second and final week will be episodes 1116-1120. ~~And Barbara Sharma, the latest in a number of recent celebs to occupy the #4 seat for a single week and then to never return again. The top of my wish list this week is for Patti to be chosen for the H/H (and match). I guess that's not terribly likely, so seeing more of Brett and Charles matching for the big money would be my second choice. And I'm never adverse to seeing a brand-new celeb score their first H/H match. Currently, there are 36 celebs who have scored at least one match, 17 with at least two, 11 with at least three, and 5 with at least ten matches! (I post complete lists periodically in these updates, mainly when the lists grow.) But most of all this week, I just want to sit back and enjoy some 1970s-style ________! ~~~Today's action: After winning $15,100, our reigning champion couldn't find enough tinkling elephants on the panel to eke out a seventh victory. And so a new champion proceeds to the bonus round... Today's audience match question: "_________ and Johnson" (My thoughts: -- First, didn't we have this question before? I swear I've already seen it, and as I recall, "Masters" and "Johnson" are the two best answers.) The celebs: Richard (Masters), Charles (Johnson), and Brett (Olsen) The choice: Johnson The answers: Olson, Masters, Johnson (Note: The comedic duo were "Olsen and Johnson." I'm not sure why the answer on the board is "Olson," but of course, as we all know, spelling doesn't count on this show!) (CNR continues his streak of providing top answers for the audience match! Although, hilariously, the contestant gives Richard a thank-you kiss even though she didn't take his suggestion! It's okay, though, even Gene has mistakenly called Richard "Charles" and vice versa.) I'm curious who our new champion will pick for the H/H. She seems to be leaning towards Richard (she called on him for the first audience match suggestion, and ran up to give him a kiss), but she must have been backstage waiting for her turn to play when the prior champion had a run of good luck (3 out of 4 matches) with CNR, and she did just take his suggestion and won $500 with it... It's Charles! It may have happened before, but I can't recall two consecutive contestants calling on Charles for the H/H match. Looking back, since episode 500, Charles has played 11 H/H matches (not counting this one). He matched on 7 of those attempts, which is 63.6%, or above his current cumulative average. Also, no matter the outcome today, his three-way tie with Betty and Fannie will again be broken... Today's H/H question: "Sentimental __________ " (I'll go with Journey, mainly because I can't think of anything else.) Charles appears to peek down at the lower tier for a brief second before he writes his answer, which seems to be at least five or six letters, and then he underlines it. He finishes quite quickly and totally without any drama or hesitation. The way he files his card allows a glimpse of his answer to be caught on camera. From what I saw, it sure looks like it could be "journey." Our champion says sentimental "reasons." Even before I heard the audience groan and boo, I felt like that wasn't likely to match. If that's an expression, it's one I've never heard before. Gene says it's a lyric to a song. Charles did indeed write "Journey." No match today. Here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50% (10 wins in 20 attempts). Charles - 49% (24 wins in 49 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.3% (167 wins in 414 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 711, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")
hilarious show, love the way they were so loose about the game and it's pace, giving time for all the panelists to do their bits. and allowing the audience get in on the act. i don't know who's responsible for that but it was brilliant. and i learned two new words "cognitating" and "alacrity". tom poston was a hilarious addition to the zaniness.
Love Lorraine’s dimples. I thought of a song “sentimental gentle wind, blowing through my life again” actually titled “Sentimental Lady” (Bob Welch, 1972) so looked and found it on UA-cam. Sweet song (kinda creepy video though). Brought back lots of memories. Btw, Marie McDonald (sad story) sang Embraceable You.
Carol Biddick looked like she was ready to leave on this episode. She was a great player, totally loyal to Charles to her financial detriment and I was sad to see her go.
It seems like it was not for everyone, The day would have to be at least 10 hours. Then you'd be surrounded by cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke. You couldn't eat while on the set. And you'd be subjected to coughing and kissing.
AAAAAND, the "consolation prizes" on today's "...Big Money Match Game are - 3 bottles of ammonia, a change purse, and a small box of donuts Rimshot !!
You Can't forget about the Hoover three in one frying pan! It fries, broils, and warms. lol
@@magikexpert it's like having three appliances in one
@@lesburns7395 I didn't know that Hoover made more than vacuum cleaners.
The Hoover pan sucks
I knew Charles would write sentimental journey, not only because of his age but because it's a great tune

Tom Poston was married to Suzanne Pleshette in 2001.
My favourite new word I learned from Gene is "gallimaufry".

Poor Gwen! She wasn't old enough to remember "Sentimental Journey."
Barbara Sharma ❤❤❤❤
Tom Poston was a regular on Newhart, but that was at least ten years later, and he didn't look any older! I wonder if he had work done?
11:21 Watch it carefully now. All right, "Earl slide it. "
Barbara Sharma is yet another person from _Laugh-In_.
I thought of sentimental value or values
I noticed MatchGameProductions posted two versions of this episode to UA-cam. One is two minutes longer than the other. Was that on purpose?
Olson and Johnson...? Who were they?
They were a comedy team. Hellzapoppin is one movie they made and it's hilarious.

With all due respect to Betty White and Ed Asner, why wasn't Mary Tyler Moore or Valerie Harper ever on this? It's a CBS show, right?
Maybe they didn't want to or were too busy

Has anyone seen the episode that Betty is talking about at the end of the video at 2:50?
