All I'm seeing is bad offense. The way you counter fronting defense like this is to just spread the floor. That way you can either lob it over the top or swing to the open 3pt shooter. The bulls spacing here is terrible. There are 3 or even 4 white jerseys in the lane every single play so they had trouble lobbing it over the top to Jordan. This type of defense wouldn't work today because you would give up a wide open 3 with numerous players able to hit close to 40%, which is equivalent to 60% from 2pt range. I mean look, I loved watching basketball in the 90s but the talent level nowadays is crazy high and it's silly to think that if you teleported players from the 90s to today that the current players would be demoted to the gleague because they can't hang with the likes of Dan Majerle, Danny ainge, Ron Harper, or Byron Russell. The competition to get to the nba level is much higher now and that's just an objective fact based on a numbers game. It's the same reason a division 3a high school with a school size of 800 kids cant compete with a 5a high school with 5000 kids. Starting at the high school level you have so many more people who are playing the game that you have to be amazing just to make the Varsity high school team in most high schools. And now the US kids have to also compete with the huge international pool of players to land a spot in the NBA. Anyways, my point is that we should enjoy different eras of basketball what it is. To compare different eras is pointless. Future generations will always improve and that's just the way it is. 50 years from now it would be silly to think that today's teams could beat those teams from the future, just like how it's silly to think that Wilt Chamberlain was literal Paul Bunyan and was the most athletic human being in the history of mankind who, at 7 feet 1, could run a 4.5 yard dash, could reach almost 4 feet above the rim with a vertical of 45 inches, and bench press 500 pounds with arms longer than Kevin Durants. I think he could walk on water too and turn water into wine. Too bad now that we need actual evidence to back up claims we will never see anyone else as athletic as wilt ever again for the rest of eternity, just like we will never see another Jesus christ. TLDR: none of this shit matters and I just wasted 15 mins of my life that I will never get back.
Well...nobody would be able to guard MJ with these soft rules and skinny ass players now. MJ could grind with anyone and he would average about 40-45 while shooting 52-53% easily today. If GP also played, he would still be into you. Just look at Patrick Beverly. He's a better version of Beverly.
0:57 Look at the Glove and MJ battling for position. All that contact, and no foul. That's a foul every time today. Back then, that was just good hard-nosed physical play as players were actually allowed to put their hands on one another.
They still allow physical defense like that IF the defender involved has a defensive reputation, if the 2 players are superstars, or if it's the playoffs. Look at Patrick Beverly/Tony Allen highlights or look at Kobe vs Melo in the playoffs
You ain’t lying. Out of curiosity, I watched the Bulls/Heat game tonight. Haven’t watched bball in years. No defense, fouls left and right. Bump into somebody and they foul you. Crazy.
i respect the toughness of the glove. Jordan just missed a few open shots and every time he got the ball he flew by him but the help defense was freaking amazing. No one player can ever stop Jordan, The sonics as a team stopped him, more weak side help needs to be credited.
Thsts what the rest of the team was for. I like how mj stayed with a core set of guys instead of super teaming . Pippin was just some guy before mj and the bulls

Payton was a great defensive artist. But, ppl tend to forget he was probably the best lob alley oop set up specialist as well. Just watch highlights of him and Kemp.
There's been talks about it. They had a loyal fan base and had some incredible teams/players. They definitely deserve to. I would like to see a team in Las Vegas but after what happened in the all star game, I can't see that happening lol
Michael Jordan only shot 51 of 123 (41.5%) from the field this series, and averaged nine fewer points than his Finals average at the time (36.3 PPG 1991-1993).
But 1990-1993 was Jordans prime, there was no stopping Jordan in his prime. The next 3 peat, when he came back from baseball he was still MJ but not nearly as good. Just look at his stats from his prime and second three peat.
Watching Jordan and Payton fight for position is epic. It reminded me of a street ball game. Very physical. Neither man backing down. Obviously Jordan is Jordan. You can't "stop" him. But the back and forth between him and Payton was always fun to watch.
@MasterP.. LMAO please never talk or watch basketball again. If anything todays league is weaker, the NBA literally bends the rules for players offensively nowadays. Overrated
There was nobody in the world that could guard Jordan on a consistent basis every game of a series. Michael got his looks but he finished 6/19 in this game. I'd say that's a good day for the defense, help or no help
That was the series that I felt in love with NBA basketball. Sonics and Payton kept Jordan under 30ppg in Final, i think they are the only team that did that. MJ always had over 30ppg in his final series.
@Lisa Rose Nah only way to slow Mj is to play really aggressive and physical for 4 quarters with the sole goal of playing defence only no scoring or rebounding. Guys today can't touch MJ, today's era is offence heavy. No defensive IQ or awareness. Only Kahwi Leonard can succeed in slowing down MJ but even still he doesn't have that type of Stamina to do this with his load management approach nor is he quick laterally like Westbrook or D rose. But he has the large hands and wingspan to force turnovers occasionally. This version of MJ was turning 34, 28 Year Old MJ would give the Taller Athletes today problem, Mike was a SG with the Hands, Wingspan of a 7 footer and ridiculous post game. He was a big SG Guard.
@Lisa Rose 2007 Nba Finals. Lebron was shut down by a 35-year-old 6"7 Bruce Bowen. Lebron James = 22-ppg FG-35% 2011 Nba Finals. Lebron James can not dominate vs 38-year-old Jason Kidd who was drafted in 1994.

Seattle had so many advantages and the same weakness at center. With the right focus they win this series. They relied to heavily on the bullying of Brickowski and not enough on the savvy of Sam Perkins.
George Caral got out coached! How do you not understand that Payton NEEDS to guard Jordan and why wasn't Kemp shooting more shots? The Bulls had no answer for Kemp!
Payton was nasty. I'd put him on my all time starting 5 just because of his defense. Payton MJ Lebron Rodman Olajuwon. I think defense is so important and you got 4 of these 5 guys who can score when they want to.
Gary Payton is the greatest pg defender ever to play but he didnt lock MJ down. he limited his touches and played tenacious defense when jordan got the ball but never really stopped MJ.
Gary Payton played spectaculaur defense, but the rest of the defense definetely kept an eye on Jordan. Payton would seal off the outside interior, forcing Jordan inside, and the center would be ready to tightly contest the shot. This is similar to what the Pistons did with their system dubbed "Jordan Rules," that effectively contained Jordan forcing him to give the ball to someone else.
This is indeed some masterful defensive work by Gary Payton, but I'm here to disspell any illusion that "George Karl not putting Payton on Jordan" was the main difference in why the Sonics, who lost 2 of their first 3 games by 20+ points, were suddenly winning against the Bulls by double-digits. Yes, Payton's defense clearly made a difference in Jordan's performance, but I swear, people never learn that *correlation does not equal causation!* The difference of Payton's defense was actually *relatively minor* compared to other *incredibly massive* factors that *far better* explain the difference between the first half and second half of the series! The *real* reasons why we went from seeing double-digit Bulls victories to double-digit Sonics victories were *far* more a result of *Hersey Hawkins* (the Sonics' shooting guard and a three-point sharpshooter) suddenly disappearing in the games they lost, Payton's *offensive* failings in the games his team lost, and the Bulls *supporting cast* disappearing in the two games the team lost! Did Payton holding MJ to 8 less points per game have an effect? Yes, indeed. But was it why the Bulls suddenly went from a *22-point victory* in Game 3 to a *21-point loss* in Game 4 (a 43-point swing)! Absolutely not! Hawkins normally averaged 16 points and 3 assists per game, but scored only 9 points in Game 1, 12 points in Game 3, and *4* points in Game 6, and across the four games Seattle lost, he went a *combined* 2-for-15 from three-point land with 3 assists *total* (or
Say what you want, Gary made his mark on MJ, his defense prevented MJ from going 50pts in each game. Gary was on the all defense 1st team 10yrs in a row
Yeah but you forget, MJ made Pippen into an all-star everyday. Pippen has said this. MJ focused on Pippen and gave him advice everyday in practice. Just like how Kobe says he doesn't win 5 rings without MJ's advice. Pippen wouldn't have had that in Seattle. Before MJ started grooming Pippen, they were saying he had a lot of talent but no skill and was a sloppy player. I mean there are a ton of talented players that never met there full potential. MJ did this for Pippen. Thats another reason MJ is the Goat, Bill Russell also had this ability to make players better. Players like Lebron will never get it.
Wu Livei Yes Pippen would have been the one of only two point guards in the western conference with size to deal with Magic Johnson. He could have been a bigger version of Gary Payton.
@@erichvonmanstein6876 He has the skills to be a Point Guard while in college he developed those ball handling skills to be a PG.He just needed to gain some size he was the only person on the Bulls to play the position.
Misconception that Payton only started guarding him this game. Payton immediately guarded Jordan and vice versa since game 1. Once the Bulls took the early leads, Gary had to switch because his offense was suffering. Payton got extra physical in game 4, and Karl called for a double team on MJ or Pip if they touched the ball. UA-cam videos never tell the story. You would've had to live through this to know
Looked like a tough physical game when Peyton guarded him, but he was double teamed every play. They had PHENOMENOL team defense. Jordan was losing Payton every time it was one on one.
George Karl dropped the ball not letting GP guard mj from game one he torched Hershey Gary had the same intensity as Mike I miss my Sonic's and the old NBA
Goddamn this was good basketball....miss ya MJ. I miss Kobe, too..but Jordan's era was so much more enjoyable before the flopping and gansta attitudes started.
Don’t get me wrong GP is a good defender but all I see is a mike getting double teamed almost Everytime he touched the ball and the shots he normally make he just simply misses. the only credit that I will give is that GP made it hard for MJ to get the ball. If it was clear isolation, mike would eat him alive.
lol obviously MJ would be double teamed. when they say GP guarded MJ it means he guarded him more then the other players in hes team. and he guarded him almost all game long when he didnt have the ball.
You can literally tell right at the tip off the game off basketball has changed it’s crazy how physical everyone was on the first possession on the boards
Clogged lanes, no screens, no ball movements, zero outside shooting, and everybody just trying to feed Jordan in the every play. The defense looks great in this era because the offense is so damn ugly compared to how offense played today. Toni Kukoc would've receive Kevin Love treatment every play on defense in today's NBA, yet they always allowed Payton to guard Jordan 1on1 the whole game. Jordan really is the GOAT tho, there's no denying that. Even at his mid 30's he still manage to average 30 ppg with this type of offense.
I'd say thats why Payton fought hard to stop him from getting the ball in the first place and didn't let him get easy post ups. MJ was a beast but this Sonics team in this series tamed him a little.
You are correct. The best and most obvious way to slow Jordan down is to deny him the ball. But CLEARLY than is easier said than done. Over the years, MANY teams have attempted to corral Jordan and have met with less than limited success at best. I'd say the best team that really slowed Jordan down was the bad boy pistons. To defend Jordan successfully, you have to bend the defensive rules and cheat on defense. Guys like Jordan, shaq and bird make a mockery of basic basketball defense. The bad boy pistons era allowed for this very type of "cheating" on defense that gave the advantage to the pistons. That type of defense ain't allowed today.
That was textbook defense against one the best to ever play the game thus far. Basic strategy for guarding great players is to deny the ball but it will not work if you dont get good backside help. Trying to stop a player like Jordan is a foolish goal. You can only hope to contain him and try to limit his points. Payton did his job well in this game.
Payton didn't lock Jordan down, but he made him work hard to get the ball, and a double team usually came quickly when Jordan got the ball. Still the energy and effort to deny Jordan the ball was incredible.
Jordan is the best clutch performer ever, he is possessed of winning. Kobe is a very close second, if he would have played with Pippen, Rodman and co he probably would have won the same championship rings as Jordan did (would have been interesting to see Kobe vs the Bad Boys). All the stats doesn´t mean a thing, if you shoot 30% and win your games you´ve done your job.
vinicius oliveira nah.... remember after Shaq the team was not that great aside from Gasol. Jordan was great not GOD. completely different era... Jordan is the Goat but there are more athletic players than ever so we can't say what Jordan would have done offensively or defensively.
@@hwyhustlin1996 I'm pretty aware of what the title says. But there are plenty of videos of it saying an individual player locking down another. Team defense is not a foreign concept to anyone who actually understands basketball so your comment is irrelevant and speaks for itself.
@@hwyhustlin1996 no it's not an opinion. U are just stating the obvious that team defense is used vs every player. No player is shut down or slowed down 1 on 1. I bet u don't go on every video about one player locking down another and then state that he didn't lock that player down without help. I think that's pretty self explanatory .
whenever people say that dumba$$ line like "Jordan had the refs in his pocket, you couldn't touch him" people should refer them to this video. he and GP were being very physical and the refs let them play it out. it was like that most of the series (and really most of his career). people heard Magic make that comment during the Dream Team video and then everyone ran with it, without doing their homework.
+Coach It was not the case his first few years in the league, but during the 90's if Jordan drove and there was contact, it was a foul on the opposing player. Never did I see an offensive foul called on him during the 90's.
acorn sucks then you clearly didn't watch basketball. 90's MJ wasn't dumb enough to run over a player but he did get offensive fouls for using his off hand to hold off shot blockers. ***** And guess what... MJ did get fouled. A LOT! so the refs were supposed to call those fouls. He got a lot of touches on offense and he used a lot of fakes, jabs, and played with people mentally that would make them bite on his fakes and be over aggressive. All those work into him drawing fouls, which then leads to him getting easier shots.
Coach you clearly are a novice. The "Jordan rule" was commonly talked about among NBA players. You must be a teenager at the most. Stop wasting my time with your lightweight comments.
No compliance None of what you wrote is even remotely true. You kept writing "____ confirmed it" and I'm gonna need you to list references, sources, legit quotes to back that up. Seems to me like you misunderstood some interviews or articles you may have seen. The second half of the 90s was the weakest? You can't be serious! And if the Bulls teams were so "Stacked" then please tell me the all-stars that were on that team outside of MJ and Pip? Are you referring to Luc Longley? Ron Harper? Kerr? Buschler? Randy Brown? Dickey Simpkins? Jason Caffey? Come on man, MJ had the least amount of talent around him of the great champions. Only Hakeem in his two championship years can be in that argument for least talented teams. The Bulls were a well oiled machine in at a time when the NBA was starting to shift to more of an selfish league because of the money being thrown around. The Bulls understood their roles better than anyone and they had a great system to play under. but don't overhype their talent level.
Coach How about the nba rule changes page: www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html Look it up on basketball reference to see that at no other time in the nba were there so many teams with lowest all time w/l records; that's my source, and inarguable source at that. Expansion helped the bulls win. -The Bulls collectively had the best defense by a mile for years. -That simply speaks to the weakness of the 90's and the strength of the 80's. I would agree that MJ/Hakeem had less around them, BUT I'd add that in the 1980's if you didn't have a relevant center, and a lot of help you weren't getting to the playoffs. People don't even remember that it was The Heat in 1997 ECF's. a mediocre team at best, and a team that would be eaten alive in the 1980's...now if someone asked who played in the 1982 ECF's people remember. Philly was number 3 and won against an awesome Celtics team in the east; and that team would be perennial champs in the 90's. Please consider that in 1989 the pistons were the best, BUT that very same team couldn't even get past the ECF's for the better part of 10 years simply b/c of Philly and Boston. That is how stacked the 80's was. Ask MJ who had all stars, and George Gervin who two years prior to joining chicago had a scoring title and led the playoffs in ppg.
I wouldn't say that he locked him down but he definitely forced him to take tougher shots. I wasn't alive during this time so I'll never get to see where the Sonics or Jazz went wrong in the finals
I was skeptical when I read the title, but Payton did a good job on him. 23 pts isn't locking down a guy but add in 80 pts as a team and they locked down Chicago for sure.

@@precisoterfe5410 Correlation doesn't equal causation. First GP had help from double teams most of the time, so it wasn't just him. Secondly, and most importantly, your statement suggests that MJ was always on every game and that the only thing that could account for his #s in that single game was GP and his teammate's defense. That's simply not the only potential, or even likely answer. Was that the lowest shooting % or points MJ shot/scored during his prime years? Were all his other substandard performances because of someone's "lockdown D", or just the fact that even MJ was and is only human, and therefore subject to the ups and downs that we all are?
After mj was caught on the last dance video laughing at payton saying he tired out mj, there's going to be a lot more new comments and views on here. Personally i think gp did a great job (lower fg%), but the team defense's schemes definitely helped too. As for mj laughing, mj wouldn't be mj without his overwhelming confidence in himself.
Lets put things in perspective. The Sonics were done 0-3 heading to this game so they were playing with extra intensity and desperation; and it showed as it wasnt only GP that was playing intensely. GP defense on MJ was good, but nothing MJ never faced before (Pistons, Knicks).
I already had a ton of respect for GP after watching him his entire career. but seeing this video, just shortly after watching today's NBA. I have a new found respect for the Glove. outside of a few guys like Melo & KD I don't think there's a player today who would have a good game vs GP. and those guys would mainly due to their height advantage. but even still I can see them struggling most nights vs GP. Not only do you have to deal with his defense but he also trash talks you the entire time. thats hard to deal with.
+Bryson Townsend don't get it twisted. Curry and CP3 don't break people down one on one or post up. they use a ton of ball screens (usually moving screens from their bigs) in order to get into open space. but as far as on ball man to man defense, none of those guys, (Westbrook included) would do work against GP. the guys feet were too quick and he had the length, ( at 6'4 )with the heart, and defensive I.Q. I'm not just speaking one game. anyone of those guys could get hot for one game but let's say a whole 7 game series. no way any of them are coming out on top. and we know for sure they can't hold GP on the other end either.
+Coach you may be right about the fact that gp would give those guys trouble one on one but this game isn't about one on one play it's about team play, so when come to ball screens gp himself would still have some trouble sometimes

The Sonics must have regret ever trading Scottie Pippen away for Olden Polynice in 1987
Yeah but you forget, MJ made Pippen into an all-star everyday. I see a team effort Payton's had alot of help
Gary was denying him the ball great but when Jordan got the ball Payton couldn't guard him
I'd say thats why Payton fought hard to stop him from getting the ball in the first place and didn't let him get easy post ups. MJ was a beast but this Sonics team in this series tamed him a little.
Jaylen Ellison fuckin right
You are correct.

Coach How about the nba rule changes page: www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html
Look it up on basketball reference to see that at no other time in the nba were there so many teams with lowest all time w/l records; that's my source, and inarguable source at that.

Yeah you can Kiss Gary's aass! Slaaaam dunk!😁😂
0:08 that’s where that iconic photo of MJ keeping the ball away from GP was taken
What Patrick Beverley thinks he is
Lets put things in perspective.
Curry would give him trouble. So would CP3. I think Westbrook would be hell to guard too.
+Bryson Townsend So Curry and Cp3 are harder to guard than Michael Jordan? gtf outta here
+Bryson Townsend don't get it twisted.
+Coach You're a smart dude, not many people pay attention to stuff like that
+Coach you may be right about the fact that gp would give those guys trouble one on one but this game isn't about one on one play it's about team play, so when come to ball screens gp himself would still have some trouble sometimes
That's a TRUE NBA game.
They Double team Jordan not only Gary Payton. GP is still an excellent defender though
Payton locked his ass down 6/19 from the field
