Looks yummy! You need a rack to keep them elevated off the bottom.
'Make sure you got plenty of stuff in the pantry.'
After hearing that, I hit the like button.
Thanks for the video
Tomatoes in glass jars taste so much better than commercially canned tomatoes! Not even close!
Amen to that Debra!
Not true. They are certainly not the same -- especially squash and other cucurbits. Commercial farmers use seeds coated with neonicotinoids. These are systemic insecticides that get inside the plant and subsequently the fruit. The squash, cucumbers, melons, etc., we grow don't have any of those inside them.
OldPossum I start my own seeds, nurture them until the day I pick them, then can them. To me they taste better than anything I could purchase in a store.
That being said, I politely beg to differ with you. You can be as smug as you want about what you think, but it is your opinion.
I don’t need your scientific probabilities, I know what I taste and that is not probable that is factual.

The finished product looks good! I enjoyed selling sweet corn this summer at the markets. People go crazy for sweet corn. Good job.
Nice to see the family, a nice bunch you have there. Bless y'all real good.
When I was young my father and I would run the cornstocks through a chipper then roter till it into the soil chopping up the roots at the same time. That was in the 1960,s. I am 73 years old now.
Making memories......
What a cute baby boy!
Hoss Tools ROCKS !!! Absolutely my favorite
Thanks Don!
@@gardeningwithhoss no, thank you !
You can dehydrate the skins and then powder them it is so great if you want a strong tomato taste
Oh my look at that corn nice, I wish I was your neighbor very nice garden
Thanks
To keep pathogens at bay use a little citric acid and keep the PH below 4.6. Botulism won’t grow at those PH levels. You don’t need to cook them so much that all you have is tomato juice. 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon depending on variety of tomatoes.
I used lemon juice.
I also do tomato juice . I have a big juice that I run the tomato's through and a coalator I use with the accss from the juicer and pour it in the juice to thicken the juice. After that use the same process as the tomato's.
I like learning from u guys
Thanks for joining us
I read if you put a tablespoon of butter in the saucepan with the tomatoes it dissolves the scum/foam. Worth a try that way you don’t loose too much of your produce. I did try it when I made marmalade but haven’t tried it with tomatoes. Let me know if you try this how it goes. Thank you ❤️
I grew the Olympian cucumber this year. Lots of fruit and good taste. The little spikes I dont like so much. All in all wonderful variety!
Thanks for sharing!
I ferment my tomatoes they are really good.
They look great, I love your video, but need a towel or something in the bottom so the jars isn't touching the bottom. It could cause them to break being that close to the heat. Or that's what every one says to do.
Thanks for the tip!
I like that set up
Thanks
A little trick I learned I don't know where, no one in my family for 3 generations back has ever grown even a tomato but I cut a small X on the bottom of the tomatoes before dropping them into the hot water and leave them in for a minute or less. This tomato peels easily and remains clean and firm so as not to be such a mess wile Handling and coring them. This also works well if you have family that doesn't like the skin on their tomato in a salad or sandwich. I've had a vegie garden for the last forty of my 68 years. Mike from Maryland P.S. You guys have a great channel
You might have learned that from the Ball canning book! It works!
Hey y'all! I would love to know where Miss Hoss got her big Blue Pots from 🥰 Love them!! Those tomatoes sure are pretty canned !
Those are enamel cast iron pots we got as a wedding gift back in the day. I think they're the Martha Stewart brand, but several different brands make them. Just search for cast iron enamel.
Will you please do a show on pesticides and what they are used for.

Heard you can reuse canning lids. Pretty sure the Amish do. Have to make sure you don't crimp when removing. Only if they are bent are they bad. Soak them in warm water to plump them back up. Never tried it but will now. These days I'd never throw away a good used lid just in case.
We will reuse the bands, but not the lids.
Tom Jones I reuse my flaps all the time. I send them thru the dishwasher to sanitizer them. I’ve been canning for thirty years.

Also we don’t water bath. Boiling hot tomatoes into jars , cap and turn upside down until cool. We may lose 1 or 2 out of 100 but time wise well worth it. Works for us. Mom and wife together about 60/75 years.
@@larryabrams3559 That's a lot of energy and hot kitchen saving.
Travis when will you plant your fall sweetcorn ?
Late August/early September

Travis how many acres are you gardening? Thanks
We have 10 plots which are about 1,000 sq. ft. each, so total about 1/4 acre.
I would like to use one of my large pots for canning where did you get yours I couldn't notice what kind you had and I can't put my jars on the bottom of a pot without rack when I boil them having the jar in the pot without a rack there is a possibility breaking the jars so tell me where did you get a rack for your pot thank you
We don't use a rack. We just set them in the bottom and they do fine.
Let me see if I have this correct. I’m ready to do my first attempt at canning.
I do not need sterilize the Jars and sticking my unsterile fingers down in the jars is not a problem??
Jars do not need to be sterilized before canning if they will be filled with food and processed in a boiling water bath canner for 10 minutes or more or if they will be processed in a pressure canner. Filled jars that will be processed in a boiling water bath canner for less than 10 minutes need to be sterilized first. If your hand are cleaned, it is not a problem.
When is it best to start rooting sweet potato slips,?
Composting corn stalks Good or bad?
Depends on your growing season. Down here, we can plant sweet potatoes as early as May and as late as July. But they need at least 90-100 days of warm weather.
You can compost corn stalks if you can get it hot enough to break down those fibers.
Hey, so a variety of corn I 'm growing this year, True Gold, is really suffering to Japanese beetles (zone 7B). I did have a sulfur deficiency but I have already resolved that and added nitrogen and compost; in an attempt to 'strengthen' the plants before they were damaged beyond regeneration. I am laying out plenty of birdseed which has attracted several crowned birds like cardinals and pileated woodpeckers which I see eating the beetles. In addition, I have been spraying the foliage with doctor Earth's Organic fungicide and insecticide, better known as 'Final Stop'. after the first week or two, the corn seemed to continue to be eaten as if I sprayed nothing at all, and now at week 3, the Japanese beetles are significantly worse than before I sprayed. Side note, I have a substantial amount of Dogfennel that seems to house hundreds of Beatles! do they multiply in Dogfennel? All my attempts at eradicating the dogfennel on my property have failed miserably!! so any advice as to how to eliminate it? Which consequently, might reduce my Japanese beetle population? My next attempt is to hang beetle traps, but I would rather control them through removing their habitat, if possible anyways.
Dog fennel doesn't tolerate close mowing. I would say mow or weedeat the area frequently and the grass should eventually out-compete it.
Travis im in a dillema!!! help...! So i harvested my tomatoes.... deskinned them... sterlized my pint jars in boiling water then hot packed my sauce into the jars and boiled for 30 minutes with lemon juice added... but i noticed a few seeds starting to sprout... is it safe to put up and eat down the line? ive never noticed the seeds sprouting before i dont think and ive done it this way for years... i used the waterbath canning method... thank you!!
The heat should take care of that.
Friends, I'm not waiting until the end of the season like in the Past....Jerseys are available now in Pennsy, I'm starting now. Just me Friends.... Today is 8/10/2022.
Good video. I hope I can order Fall seed here for long. God speed
We should have plenty!
@@gardeningwithhoss now I have to figure out how. Not to good at this computer stuff. Thank you love your channel
Do you have to boil your tomatoes before putting them in jars to process?
Yes, you should boil before jarring.
What is the brand name of the drip tape you recommend ?
Rivulis
Did you add any water before you boiled or just the tomato liquid?
No water.
@@gardeningwithhoss Thanks
Do you have a can video on canning Cucumbers
Do you have CU cumber recipes for Kenny I bought CU cumber seeds from you guys and I need a recipe thank you
We have a video about Canning Cucumbers! It is called, WHAT TO DO WITH ALL THESE CUCUMBERS?
When did you plant the corn?
End of May
Question Do you have to put in a teaspoon of salt in each quat jars? I watched other people canning tomatoes 🍅!
no you do not have too
@@gardeningwithhoss OK why?
It is not necessary for preservation, but does add flavor if desired.
@@gardeningwithhoss I am on a low sodium diet. Would a quarter teaspoon be ok?
I noticed you did not have anything in the bottom of the pot to keep the jars from directly touching the pot. Isn’t that dangerous to the jars? Breakage?
Best Practice is to have something in the bottom.
What I’d like to know is do you have any problems with raccoons or other critters in your corn 🌽 or tomatoes 🍅?
We don't because we have a dog, two cats and a shotgun that we're not afraid to use.
Do u put basil in your tomatoes
yes, sometimes
You don't need to boil for 45 minutes. I do it for .10 minutes and never had any problems. They seal just fine.
To be as safe as possible to try to follow the directions in the Canning book.
Do you make salsa recipes
yes, just request via custserv@hosstools.com
Hello Travis:
How often can I reuse drip tape?
Also, have you tried a Victorio Food Strainer for making tomato and apple sauce, and pumpkin puree? While I like the "chunky" style of tomatoes you did here, the Victorio let's you feed the tomatoes in raw. Here's a link to another UA-cam video demoing it.
ua-cam.com/video/tjv-fGSFZHc/v-deo.html
As many times as you'd like. We usually reuse it 3-4 times before replacing it.
What happens when tomatoes are processed too long? I forgot to set timer when they started boiling and so I don’t know what time they started boiling 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️. I hurt my knee and went to get off it just a min and was so tired I fell asleep for a min. My husband was “on duty” but he didn’t know to set timer...
They should be fine as long as you skimmed the foam off the top.
You and your Dad always say that corn, peppers, watermelon, and tomatoes are HEAVY feeders. Are they all about the same or is one more of a greedy eater than the others? Thanks!
Corn is probably the heaviest feeder in the garden along with onions. The others are a close second.
Hoss Tools THANKS SO MUCH GUYS!
How do I can whole tomatoes with juice? That's how my mother did it. I would eat them right out of the jar.
The same way. You would need a medium firm tomato though
@@gardeningwithhoss I'm excited about the Marglobe tomatoes I'm growing this year. They'll be perfect.
HOW DO YOU KILL NUTGRASS ! Please help !!!
A tarp for 6-8 months, then hoe, hoe, hoe and keep it disturbed.
Dumb question, why do you use regular mouth? I use wide for everything.
We just use what we have. Sometimes jars are hard to find when you need them.
You do don't need to take the foam off. I'm 67 & never have.
please supplement this vid showing the sugar and salt step. you left me hanging!
