    When you think about it, those incoherences are actually giving more depth to Ash. If we start to consider the reshoots as being part of the contuinity, I personally don't think he was stuck in a time loop but was rather slowly losing his mind to the point of having distorted memories and notions of reality, due to the amount of PTSD he has.
    For example, in the intro of Evil Dead 2, he's entirely alone with his girlfriend and he has more confidence than ever because he's simply imagining his own dream world. As for the shotgun becoming a double-barelled one, it could be part of some sort of mental confusion, as if his own reality is distorted with delusions, which includes the mirror reflecting another self aware version of himself and the fact that he instantly wakes up for the second time after being attacked by his possessed dead girlfriend, as if nothing happened before.

    My theory is that Evil not only can´t be defeated, it won. Whenever a deadite is killed, the demon soul returns to hell. The physical human bodies they use are disposable to them, they just fuck around with human bodies. It is not that Evil can´t kill Ash, Evil just likes to mess with Ash, kind like Joker and Batman. Evil WANNA Ash to destroy those deadites bodies, the fight, the carnage, that is Evil´s fun. Considering TV show Ash´s attitute towards killing deadites, it is fair to say this is fun for both sides. Evil successed in turning Ash into his "dance partner".

    If I remember correctly, the Adaptation of the first film by Dark Horse Comics addresses the continuity issues between parts 1 and 2. Screen writer Mark Verheiden adapted the first film as a passion project and had the blessing of the Raimi's to sort out the continuity gafs. The publisher also adapted Army of Darkness in 1993 without the slapstick comedy. Both graphic novels are worth checking out if you're an Evil Dead completist.

    I made my own cut of Evil Dead when I first started video editing back in 2004.
    It's the whole first movie up to the end, when the Evil comes for through the door Ash and zooms into his face. Then you start part 2 where the Evil zooms into Ash, taking him for that joy ride through the trees and slamming him into a tree. Let the movie play till the end. You stop when Ash goes through the portal and Start part 3 as the portal opens and Ash and the car falls out.
    Everything that happens after the tree slam and Ash waking up in the piddle possessed in part, lines up with the ending for part 1. It's like, after all that stuff in part one, the Evil tried to take Asj, but the morning saved him. And because Ash buried his GF in part one too, Ash seeing Linda rise up and dance in part 2 lines up too. Trust me. It just works.
    You get one awesome movie marathon.

    I actually really like this theory, especially the idea that the change in Ash's character is caused by him subconsciously retaining the experience from the different loops. Like playing *Dead Rising* over and over until you max out your skills and memorize every event.
    I had a theory that the Evil Dead series is really a multiverse, and that each entry in the franchise (including the remake, the comic books, and the video games) is a separate alternate reality with minor differences. There are some things that are constant, like every reality has a necronomicon and an Ash, but the details change.

      It crossed my mind while making this. But what I can sort of speculate is that the knight's who were hailing him at the end of evil dead 2 arent the same who he works with in army of darkness. Army of darkness doesn't quiet start where Evil Dead 2 ended. He's already prisoner with another bunch of knight's from a different clan.

      Oh yeah, maybe those are the Scottish clan at the end of Evil Dead 2, that makes perfect sense. Further to that, your time loop theory also kinda could work to explain the disparate Army of Darkness endings, perhaps every time a loop is completed and Ash resets it could potentially cause a tear in the timeline, one leads to the S-Mart ending and one to the Methuselah ending.

    I like the time loop theory. The way I saw it was the original time lines is 1.
    Two is him going through the same experience however it’s different because the events of 3 set a butterfly effect that change it from him and his friends to him and his girl.
    3 recaps him telling it how he remembers it. Memories aren’t exactly how things played out. When the show came out though it got the butterfly effect cycle.
    3 replays it from the changes made in the show. So it is an endless cycle like your theory. All in all the deadites can’t kill him cause they need him to be unleashed. However, even though he unleashes them he is also the one that can end the loop. Thus the prophecy.

  • @dj_daem0n
    @dj_daem0n 2 роки тому +11

    My personal theory about how Ash changes is pretty much the same as yours, just without the whole endless loop thing. The entity kills all his friends, then the love of his life. It tortures him with their corpses. It tries to take him, but fails. It tries to drive him mad, and that backfires. The entity unwittingly forges him into it's greatest enemy. The next step makes perfect sense. Create their own Ash to control. But unfortunately, it would take more than a deadite copy of his body and mannerisms to defeat the original.

    There are some alternate scenes, and plot lines in the comics and video games that give this some legs. The games take place after Army, but he has to go back in time again, and when he comes back the world is destroyed. The idea is that he keeps making things worse but is trapped as being the savior, both reliving events and shooting through time, each time a little different.

    "Too dumb to possess." I think they were just showing his will, or his love for Linda, was strong enough to break the possession. Ash's dumbness came about in Army of Darkness. He was not dumb in either Evil Dead, or Evil Dead II. Socially awkward in the first isn't dimwitted, it's just that. While I love Army of Darkness, it's why I prefer the first two for his character and Evil Dead II is one of my favorite movies of all time. Ash vs. The Evil Dead was ok as a series, but it's also why I don't like it as much. He's too dumb, when he wasn't before. Jake was the dumb one in Evil Dead II, and it's like they combined him and Ash into one for Army. And by the way, that's dumb as in devil-may-care dumb, or as you say later, stubbornness, or almost intentionally making himself dumb to the reality around him, because he's also a guy who can somehow make prosthetic arms of medieval metal gauntlets that work like they are wired into his brain, or the futuristic arm he makes in the TV series, or the steampunk monstrosity Deadite wrecker from his demolished car in Army.
    I agree 100% with Ash losing his mind in EDII being AMAZING acting, writing, and pacing. It's great stuff and I do like the theory that he's been put through the loops so many times, by the end of EDII and in Army, he's completely had it and it plays into his overconfidence and machismo.

  • @SwankyKitteh82
    @SwankyKitteh82 3 роки тому +7

    Theory is interesting.
    So essentially, Ash was pursued and hunted by the evil force seen in the first two films.
    Said force cannot kill him, and as "the chosen one" he's resistant to the power of possession the evil force so easily uses to take over literally anyone and everyone else.
    Which is unusual, and unfortunate for said evil force.
    As Ash is, in most respects, kind of a lovable buffoon, and should therefore be otherwise easy to kill.
    So, it does the next best thing in order to keep him from fulfilling prophecy.
    It attempts to drive him mad by making him relive the events of the first film no less than three times.
    Making him kill, subsequently re-kill, and bury Linda (his girlfriend), no less than three times.

    While Bruce Campbell already confirmed how the events play out (ignore the beginning of Evil Dead 2, and start the movie right after Ash gets possesed...because the "canon" version of the first night is the first movie, you can actually see Ash's friends souls at the end of ED2 as part of the giant demon), I do think Ash lost his mind in the chair scene, after that he starts with the one-liners, puts a freaking chainsaw where his hand used to be, starts killing demons like nothing...and I think him breaking the fourth wall was intentional.

    • @mrcritical6751
      @mrcritical6751 2 роки тому

      I always saw the intro to ED2 being because Ash got brain damage and it temporarily made him forget who he brought to that cabin with him, only to be reminded when he got home because his dad and the people in town were probably asking him “where the hell are Cheryl, Scotty and Shelly? You were the last one to see them alive”

  • @trickshot646
    @trickshot646 3 роки тому +2

    One thing I noticed, there's no chainsaw where it's supposed to be in the second movie, instead a chalk drawing of the chainsaw, conventionally chalk drawings are used to leave markings in time loops (for example call of duty zombies, the characters are stuck in a time loop until they complete the easter egg).

    Very interesting theory! It would also make sense why in the 2nd film, the knights basically worship him, and in the 3rd, arrest him along with the army. Maybe he started looping again in the middle ages and the situation slowly changed until he is able to break out of it again.

    Some if the comics are really awesome too. Apparently there is a comic that deals with a female version of Ash, who is partially possessed by evil and has a demonic hand that turns into a chainsaw, and an alien whose name translates to, "what remains if a burnt forest." In that comic evil is trying to kill ash in all dimensions and in all timelines. So it's also a possibility that every incarnation we see of Ash is a different version or timeline. This would explain the inconsistencies between movies such as the knights hailing Ash at end if evil dead 2, but arresting himinArmy of Darkness

    I normally don't care for fan theories but this one totally makes a lot of sense. Not only is the time anomalies and alternate realities a plot point in the movies but there is some of that in the show as well. Also just want to throw this out there, Ash is a lefty and I just found out on PBS Eons that lefties brains are wired a bit differently. Things seem to process more linearly between the two brain hemispheres. Also he has a bit more of an advantage when fighting maybe. As a lefty myself that's what I'm going with.

    Ooooooorrrrrrr... as is a known fact confirmed by Bruce himself, the intro to the second movie is just an unfortunate reshoot that doesn't line up due to basically being a cliff notes version of the first film's events. They wanted to use the original film's actual footage for the intro, but only had the rights to the story and characters, not the movie itself. They instead decided to reshoot the whole recap sequence, including Sam Raimi having a cameo as Scotty, but for one reason or another, pretty much all of that got scrapped in favor of what we saw. Hence why the ending of the first film lines up with everything in the second perfectly, provided you skip the intro. Same for this one if you skip the last couple minutes and then watch Army of Darkness. Still a cool idea though.

    • @mrcritical6751

    Ash doesn't know if there is a loop himself as he's not self aware of any such loop so how would he get better at fighting the evil if every loop starts the same in groundhog day bill Murrays character is aware of reliving the same day is Ash aware he living the same day

    • @mijime42
      @mijime42 3 роки тому +4

      His theory suggests deja vu amnesia . The loop isn't like the ground hog day. That would give ash the upper Hand, which would make the evil dump. You know cause they were the ones with the time bending abilities.

    I don't understand how yall find the timeline confusing. It literally couldn't be more streamlined. its all 1 film seperated into parts. and regardless of whether they had the rights to army of darkness, its still canon in ash vs evil dead.

    • @drcheesenut896
      @drcheesenut896 2 роки тому

      Well let's see. Evil Dead 2's opening is litteraly Evil Dead 1 again but without most of the characters, and Ash is more confident, and then Evil Dead 2 ends with Ash being hailed as a hero while Army Of Darkness shows him being taken prisoner at the start. This now creates a huge mess, one timeline where Evil Dead 1 happens and then the main events of Evil Dead 2, one where Evil Dead 1 doesn't happen and it's all just Evil Dead 2, and then both of those timelines split off, either leading to Army Of Darkness or leading to Evil Dead 2's ending. Then Army Of Darkness splits off, either to it's theatrical ending and then the TV series, or the OG ending where Ash goes too far into the future.

    Bit of an aside here but part of me REALLY wishes Sam had been allowed to keep the original ending to Army of Darkness. I really like the idea of the Evil Dead franchise moving into a post apocalyptic direction and it complements the ending of Evil Dead 2 in a funny way. Poor Ash slung from the distant past to the distant future is in keeping with the Evil Dead franchises' love of continuously punishing that character.

    Much of what you’re talking about is trying to tie some continuity between films that couldn’t have it because of constant rights issues - but it’s still fun and one of the better fan theories I’ve heard because the time line is malleable with the portal in ED 2. You did a better job of putting these events together than the show did! Bravo!

    The FANTASTIC PS2 game, Evil Dead: Regeneration (which I highly recommend) pretty much ties into this theory / supports it. It’s filled with time-hopping and Ted Raimi’s quips break the fourth wall in a way that tends to lend credence to this theory that Ash doesn’t remember all of his previous adventures.
    Now, the reason for this is _probably_ because THQ made a previous game, Evil Dead Fistful of Boomstick which is unconnected to Regeneration. The quips are probably meant to lampshade the fact that players would wonder why the previous game wasn’t sequentially connected to Regeneration.
