I think that it is never stressed enough the use of legs. Whenever we touch the horse's mouth we must follow with the legs. That being said, I love the way you spell things out for the horse and for us, as well. Please keep them videos comming. Thanks.
Beautiful and great position and excellent spin! I'm curious though so how will you get his head back up when you move up the ladder and want to teach him advanced movements, such as with draw reins, which require head up?

I haven’t tried this yet but it makes sense, I’ve just watched this and I’ve been watching and watching and watching videos on how to get my horses head down in showmanship, I’m going to try this tomorrow and see how it goes, but idk if it’s going to work because he does like his head down it just takes him halfway across the arena to actually settle and get his head down and by then we’ve dropped 3 places in the class, don’t get me wrong horse shows are fun but the reason you do them is to improve and the one thing deducting our points is whenever we start trotting off he puts his head up then after 6 strides puts it where it’s supposed to be, he does it at home too so he’s not just nervous in the ring and trying to be looky because if that was the case I would give him a few more shows to let him get used to them, any idea how to fix this? He likes his head down already it just takes him so long to put it down
Yea, same in english, although we ride "in hand". You might raise your hands with lots of leg to bring the horse above where you want.... then the horse will usually take the rein, with your leg prompting, and drop down into your hand as you follow his head. Nice video. Our types of riding are more similar than some think.
This is so weird to me as an Eventer with dressage training. Horses will naturally put their heads down when they are using their hindquarters, rounding their bodies, and using their bodies correctly. There are lots of ways to cheat and get their head down, but that doesn't mean that they are using their bodies and their hind correctly. This horse's head is down, but he's not even close to tracking up and doesn't look like he has any push from behind. Am I missing something? :-)

So quarter horses who are bread for cutting or reining don't always track up usually bc they're short. Also english roundness and collection is different than western and is taught to a horse differently. That being said my issue with most reining is when the horses noses are in the sand like the one in the video.
@@josiemutch3036 Reverse psychology or forcing the horses head down is a band-aid at best. Get the horse soft on the reigns, good lateral flexion, get the walk, trot, canter, gallop all collected so the horse is ready for either up/down transition at a moments notice and watch the head go down naturally and the tension in your horse will ease. Warwick Schiller is great with his lessons on youtube.
Many reining horses can do basic dressage, and most pleasure horses, too. Where I live, it's common to teach dressage style collection and roundness first before many typical reining maneuvers. There's a huge difference between the horses that collect properly and those that know the motions.@@gabimariemerino5420
I'm really hoping this works with my stubborn mare, 4yr old Cutting care that got ran on barrels and she keeps her head high in the sky which I feel is really hollowing her out and not helping her build the muscle she needs.
My mare holds her head up no matter whats durring a trot. Ive tried so much even tying her head down so she can release her own pressure but she just wouldnt do it. I even finally used a bit for her and that isnt working eather. I want to try this

My horse recently just started throwing his head up and my boss says throw him in a tie down but I'd like to avoid that if I can. I feel like that's just more a brace then a problem fix. Any advice would be appreciated!!
Id say depends on what level is your horse, if they've gone through a transitional bit id say start with a transitional bit and try that, but sometimes it might not necessarily be the bit, sometimes you might not be giving enough rein or maybe too much, lots of things.
Good ol biomechanics. When you pull up like that and drive hard at the ribcage with your legs you're actually creating elevation across the withers and shoulders (lift) which in turn causes them to power more from the rear so the head goes down and the horse carries himself in a rounder frame. Ideally done in a snaffle or hackamore because if a horse has more bridle on they tend to not want to drive into it until they're doing this very consistently. People tend to not understand the depth of what's going on here

From my understanding, lowering the head allows the horse to reach under and drive better with their hind legs, which in turn lifts their shoulders. But i dont know if theres more to it than that to get them to drive.
The head will move into a lower position if the rest of the body is properly collected, so it's backward. You fix the body, and the head follows. @@SDWits

Diane Peoples, Our horses conformation is the main reason why they travel level. It’s part of my selection process, they tend to be great reining horses. They don’t all do that AND I’m ok with it! 😎💯〽️

What do you recommend to encourage the horse to have his head at the withers instead of up in the air running like a Llama

So Matt would recommend doing this right away on teaching horse to keep head down. I want to work on this week and would like what method to try first

after i tried this she wanted to lay down/ roll!
Watch them in a natural envir. they will never move like that. Only in a challenge to fight rare.
