- Being creative with very common drum patterns can be tricky at times! Especially when they are pretty intense beats and they don't leave much space for creativity. Let's see a couple of variations to get inspired to come up with our own Beats!
This is a snippet of the 'Skank Beats Coordination' lesson that you find here: jamespaynedrums.com/shop/cour...

I love the punk rock feel with those beats.
I like calling it the Metal Polka when you add the double stroke!
I play a lot of Metal Polka in my drumming ahah!
In Argentina we call it 'TUPA TUPA'.

I'm joining a metal/thrash kind of band and currently learning their songs. They have one where about 2/3 of the way into the track it changes tempo and goes into a skank beat at 210bpm. The skank bit itself goes on for just under a minute with fills and some minor rhythmic changes to break it up, but I'm still finding it daunting and just physically difficult having to do it and insert the fills/changes at that speed.
Besides "practise, practise, practise", are there any tricks or advice for doing a skank beat, particularly if I want to keep all the 16th notes on the right hand instead of "cheating" (which I still can only do for a certain amount of time before losing momentum), at that kind of speed? I'm trying to do the wrist action properly but something's not quite right.
Thanks.
It's complicated for me to know what is happening wrong without seeing your approach, but I would suggest you to pay attention to the dynamics while playing the Skank Beat. If you are hitting as hard as you can instead of having controlled motions and dynamics that will exhaust you very quickly and create the type of problems you described. I hope this helps, if not I could help you through a Skype lesson where I can see what is happening.
@@JamesPayneDrums Thanks. I've been looking through your other videos and generally using some of the exercises to hopefully help with technique amd speed. I'll see how that goes for now. 😀👍
Im having trouble with leading with the kick, how do i practice this?
So the Polka beat is a Skank beat??
🤔
