I am a new student so I studied the chapter, but I couldn't find the answer for this question. which of the following will not cause erroneous result in a 24 hour timed urine collection? A- The collection starts and ends in the evening. B- Two first morning specimens are included in the collection. C- Multiple collection containers are not mixed together before specimen testing. D- A portion of the collection is removed before total volune measurement. Thank you
Samiullah Hanify I'm thinking the answer would be A, as all the others would for sure give erroneous results. As long as they discarded their first urine ( whatever time of day that is) and started the 24 hours from then I think it would be okay. We actually get quite a few that dont start in the morning, usually it is from an OB patient, and the dr's want the results as soon as possible, usually to check for preeclampsia by checking 24 hour protein, or even just doing a 12 hour urine protein.
limengxin the actual device that reads the colors is used in labs, but you can buy these kinds of strips online to check your own urine if you wanted to!
....What are considered very strong indications of either "GOOD health", or, conversely, "BAD health"?! .....So, then,....What can be done to help get these key parameters back to a normal/healthy range?!...
Not necessarily, but there's something in there. In addition to leukocytes, blood, etc-yes, but if it's just a higher specific gravity with say higher protein it could be mucus, or kidney issues like a stone or kidney disease. I had a high specific gravity when I was having a lot of back pain, there was quite a bit of mucus in my urine probably due to the inflammation, but it was not an infection.
Hey! For a school assignment, we are doing a urinalysis, and for the steps in the lab report, we need to find what we will use. The teacher says that there is the basic answer (the dipsticks) and a more precise answer, which are harder to find but are better. We need to find substances that react to some elements in urine or what are the chemicals on the dipstick that react with the elements in urine. We need to find these chemicals for carbohydrate, nitrogenous wastes, proteins, vitamin C and glucose. For example, I found Fehling's solution or glucose oxidase for glucose (not sure yet). I was wondering if you could help me with what were these chemicals/substances? Tks a lot:)
@@therookie3445 normal pH is about 5 to 8, I don't think I've ever seen a 4 and maybe only once an 8.5 or 9 and they had a bad uti that I believe was throwing off the results.
Thanks for sharing, just quick question on reading the result. What happened if just the edge of the protein indicator color changed but not entire area. Is this consider positive or negative ?
High leukocytes are also present in a disease called IC ... which is not a bladder infection for years doctors have said I had a UTI but it’s... interstitial cystitis.
Leukocytes seem to be measured as “ca cells/ul” (as noted on the dip stick keys). What does the “ca” stand for? Cancer??? Can these decrease without having cancer?
Positive Nitrites means your urine has nitrite producing bacteria, like E. Coli, so it can be very serious, especially if it migrates to the kidneys. Best to be seen by a provider and get on antibiotics for the infection.
No explanation as to why one gets a distinct change in colors on the dipstick after 5 minutes - no change until 4 minutes. Nothing in the 120 second time.
If there is no color change within 120 seconds for that specific analyst, then it is negative. There could be color changes outside of the time frame due to very small quantities, but are low enough to not quantify.
Fasting isn't necessary to take the test but you're most concentrated urine would be in the morning. If you're overly hydrated it may be falsely negative for things. Not sure for keto.
I have tested high 4+ for CA-Oxalate Crystals i.e. threat for kidney stones. I have read that if citrate levels are low, supplementing citrates is good for preventing stone formation however, I first need to do a 24 hr. (NRO?) risk test for citrate. Is there a home test kit for this? Thank You
I've actually never heard of that test and if you have 4+ calcium oxalate crystals that's a lot and are usually from kidney stones, not just a threat of them. My dad takes chancra piedra an herbal supplement that works to help prevent their formation, but once you have them, it may help some.
I've had a 10 tab cup test , new type in UK . So gave all my precipitation details, and tester said inconclusive, and will be sent to a lab . I take co codamol 30/⁵00, gabas 300mg , steroid inhaler, Diazipam are some . Why would this result in this . I'm laid off until lab tests are back . Could not pee so was told to drink 250ml every 20 minutes which I did 5 times , also morning water 2L say , can't be sure ?
hi i'm very scared now bcs i just tested my urine with this kit and my glucose level is the second square and i'm really panicking bcs i don't know it's normal or not😭😭😭 Could you pls tell me what it means🙏🙏
So each red blood cell is filled with hemoglobin. When a red cell bursts, the hemoglobin is released out of the cell. It's called hemolyzed and non hemolyzed actually. The process is called hemolysis. On this type of urine dipstick, and most of them that I know, pick up on hemoglobin, so if the red cells present in urine are fully intact, which usually doesn't happen too often, then it may not show up very well, versus a lot of busted red cells, that release hemoglobin, then the "blood" (hemoglobin) concentration will be high. Hemoglobin is what makes the red cells red.
Hi i have negative result for bilirubin when i read at 30s as per stated but i found the colour become deeper when time pass (turn to positive when close to 60s). Should i concern about this result?
These same parameters, basically seeing if you have a UTI, or something looks off with your results, if you are diabetic they would also do a urine microalbumin.
If an analyzer is not reading the strips, you would write down which gradient pad it changed to. So for nitrites it would be positive or negative. But others it would be like negative or 1+, 2+, 3+ or 4+, etc.
quick uestion for a random drug test or pre employment what is the point of sending the samples off to a lab, i'm sure they check for temperature and drugs on the spot with a 5 panel dip stick urine test so what's the point of having to send it off for lab results that take up to 4 says to get results i don't get it
So for one of 2 reasons, some drug screen cups dont have the drug testing on the side of the cup, they are all just temp markers, so all of them get sent to the lab, or if one or more of the 5 drug screens on the cup look positive, then they would get sent to the lab.
Which method is better Automated strip test, Microscopy VS Dipstick method for... Urine routine examination..... Kindly reply... Also tell me upto sample remains in good condition for examining ??????
sorry for all the questions i have a buddy who has one of these soon and he is pretty worried. Is the dipstick the only part of the entire analysis that would detect any sort of nicotine? could this be seen under a microscope?
First of all, you are talking about a drug screen I assume, so check out my video on that if you wish, that is not this video. Secondly, nicotine is separate from a drug screen, but is usually also off of urine, it is it's own test. Lastly, you cant see nicotine under a microscope, or any drug in a urine in a clinical setting.
what does specific gravity 1.015- 1.020 indicate? is there any concern we should be awaring? i read google it just saying whether that person is hydrated or dehydrated
That's considered a normal level. It can be hydration, or overly hydrated (at low levels) but higher levels can be dehydration or just the amount of things in a urine (protein, casts, mucus, etc) which doesn't have to do much with hydration status.
Basically, but could be other reasons like a kidney infection or even kidney failure, depends on which tests are positive, not all mean a UTI, like if it's just blood and not white blood cells, could be something else besides a uti. Also you can have a low pH or a high pH and it be a UTI
Anything close to 7 is good. But lower and higher numbers don't mean a whole lot. I've seen some UTI bacteria cause a high pH like 8 or even 9, but low pH can be common as well.
I’m a 13 year old girl who suspects I have a uti. I have all the symptoms except blood in my urine but I’m too scared to tell anyone and it’s been happening for 2 days. I’m scared
A lot of times you may have blood in your urine and not even know it because it's in such small amounts. But if you are having symptoms I would definately mention it to someone who can take you to the dr or clinic. UTIs arent anything to be afraid of! Many women get them for different reasons. They will just ask for you to pee in a urine cup and will check it to see if it looks like a UTI, give you a script for antibiotics, and be on your way! 😊
Medical Maura You know what that doesn’t sound too bad. Thx for the advice you just got a 13 year old to go to the doctors😃 not many people can do that
@@armandolopez6365 was there a desiccant pack in there? Because if they are in a humid environment that can affect them and the desiccant packs that little bag of beads keeps it dried out so that could be what happened
Medical Maura yea there is one in there . But just to be safe I order a new one online because I got really scared when I said protein Urobilinogen and white cells high but when I put it on the water I got the same results so that’s when I figure something was wrong with the strips
Higher Ketones is from eating a low carb / ketogenic diet..... i.e. high fat, moderate(normal) protein, low carbohydrate. High ketones on the strip is NOT from eating a lot of protein!
Well it can be from fasting, and with the addition of protein and fats to that. I used to eat high protein moderate to high fat and had ketones in my urine as well.
I’m not sure if i understand if specific gravity being very dark blue like 0-1 is good or bad. I feel very thirsty all the time and the test strip is dark blue. Trying to get enough money to see a doctor right now..
With specific gravity and if your strips are similar to these where the dark blue is closer to a specific gravity of one which is basically water, that would mean your urine is very deluded which means you are plenty hydrated, which isn't really an issue. So you can't really go off specific gravity for diagnosing a problem as to why you are so thirsty, though. If the test strip was very dark blue on the glucose square then I would say that sounds more like a diabetic, as they can be thirsty a lot. I hope you can get some proper testing done to find out more about your health!
Well a person might require antibiotics if an infection is suspected. Therefore, a microscopic analysis of the urine should be done and a urine culture if indicated to find out the type of bacterial infection.
Hello, I bought some cheap strips from online and i'm unsure whether they're faulty or me and my dad are nearly the same as per the read outs on the strips. Both of us was showing +++200 RBC/ul . I'm unsure by what that means?, but every test that was taken at home shown the same for blood " +++200 RBC/ul", but no blood/ red or brown colour can be seen in the urine, is there something i should be concerned about? the colour on the strip was darkish green after the 60 seconds what the instructions tells me to wait. S.G/Densite is 1.020 is that a concern? It's gotten both me and my dad worried. thanks
Hmm not sure on the validity of the strips without knowing the brand or anything. But you can have red cells in your urine without it being overtly red. Looking at tons of urines a day I can eyeball them and tell, usually a slight pink tinged to a normally yellow colored urine. But I think it's best if you visit a primary care provider with your concerns and get a proper urinalysis test, with microscopic would be best. It could indicate a urinary or prostate problem.
The easiest way is to look at the comparison chart usually it'll say which way the strip handle is pointed and then I would line up the blank white compensation square with yours and then go up from there. If you're doing your own urine at home it may be easiest to take a picture of your strip at the time intervals that the strip says to read the squares manually, that way you can have that snapshot and be able to look at all the squares when they need to be looked at.
Can a test read higher blood levels with a very small amount of urine sample? Or what if that small amount of urine wasn't conducted midstream? Basically i peed straight into the cup, i was only able to pee like 3 to 5 table spoons. They said i have large amounts of hematuria. But i took it a week ago and it showed moderate. I don't smoke i don't drink. But i have the cold/flu. And i originally went in because i had epidymitis. Now they want to do a cystoscopy??? Im 27yrs old. I really don't want to do the procedure....
+Hustlas Story it could if the small amount of urine is concentrated, but it could go the other way too, that theres actually more blood in the urine.. hard to say when you arent sure if the small sample size is indicative of the whole or not. Regardless, there really shouldnt be hardly any blood in a sample, unless a woman is on her period and it's not a clean catch.
Can you provide me a list of diseases that can be detected by the dipsticks? Or what each of the "things in your urine" mean? Like Urobilinogen, bilirubin, ETC, means in the patient. Like do they have some kind of UTI, or disease if they test positive on the dipstick?
My parents taught I lied when they saw my pee because it was very clear but still had a yellow tone and one of them said I put water in it my urine ph was like a 5-6 meaning I did not temper with the container and they still think I lied lmaoooo
If I just take Suboxone, why did my test from urine possible show a positive for oxicodone ? They are sending it off but do you know what or why is could have came up positive for that? Please help me understand thank you so much!
Actually I have found a medtox pdf that has some interfering substances listed for each type of drug, and what can cause a false positive. Since Suboxone is made up of Buprenorphine and naloxone I looked them up. It does have naloxone listed as a possible false positive for oxy at a pretty high concentration of 1O,OOO ng/ml when the cut off for ocycodone is normally 1OO ng/ml of oxycodone. So not sure how feasible that is, but it is a possibility. It's at www.medtox.com/resources/images/6817.pdf
I dont know about locally, but pretty sure you can get similar strips on Amazon, but I cant say how accurate those are. If you dont have an analyzer to read the strip and are doing it by hand at the amount of time it says, theres always going to be some degree of user error to factor in when visually determining the colors compared to the chart.
Does a kidney infection show up on this uti test strip as leukocytes? Also when you are getting a urine culture for uti when they check it microscopic will it show if you have cancer or just check for the uti? Also can you take a strip test anytime of day?
Crystal Krinkles Yes the kidney infection should show up with this test as leukocytes and blood usually, although you can't differentiate between the kidney infection and a bladder infection without some type of ultrasound.
When we check under the microscope were mostly looking for a UTI or kidney infection, however sometimes renal cells or kidney cells can show up in the microscope and that's not necessarily cancer but it's not good indication for kidneys, or even casts in your urine that come from your kidneys as well which usually mean some type of kidney failure so we don't only look for UTIs but we don't state that there are cancer cells specifically.
Crystal Krinkles you can take this test anytime of the day but your first morning urine is going to be the strongest no matter if you have a UTI or not . Through the day you become more hydrated and therefore your urine will be more dilute of whatever's in it.
Medical Maura Thank you so much :) Being more hydrated throughout the day and the urine being more diluted, do leukocytes still show up and do you think the missionary urine strips are pretty accurate :)
Crystal Krinkles they can show up it depends if you start out at more of a 3 + or 1 + in the morning what they end up being throughout the day. If it's a pretty bad UTI you'll have a 2 or 3 plus no matter what time of day it is.. and idk about that brand specifically, so couldn't say either way!

Also I got my urine checked twice in hospital and both tests came back negative for protein but I’m still having foamy urine so I want to get a reliable at home test strips to check a third time. Please help me! Also they said my PH was 8 which is pretty high.
hi, thank you for the video. I want to know how can I use the test strips? I mean how should I pour the urin on the test in home? is this ok if I use a clean glass? or can I just pour the urin on the test ?
Yes you can use a glass. At work we have a tube that we would dip it in and then drag it against the side as you are taking it out to get excess urine off of it.
For use on yourself, correct? I dont think they'd be that off, maybe more tend for a false negative over a false positive if anything, as the pad may start to "lose reaction". Now if you were using them in a clinical laboratory setting, that would be a big no no lol
@@MedicalMaura Yes, personal. Actually got them for our dog couple years back, she healed up and they were forgotten, came across them today, was thinking why not use them, just to see what I can see. :- ) Thank you for the info.
Could mean a lot of things, or not much, basically. Did you discuss with your physician? 1+ and 1 mg aren't very high amounts, so not necessarily anything to worry about, but the presence of bilirubin and urobilinogen could mean an intestinal issue or liver issue. (They are breakdown/bi-products of red blood cells). Ketones are pretty common in urine, and can show up with a high protein diet, or if you were fasting.

Usually means there is a small or moderate amount of Leukocytes, or White blood cells, but not jam packed in the urine. Can still be an infection.
You were right I have an ecoli uti
That was very educational..plz show more sample tests.
Same Urine Combur that we used in Singapore. Very comprehensive explanation. Good job.
I've read articles about how test strips aren't reliable a lot of times especially when it comes to uti and some other things.
this was great!! does drinking too much water effect your results? I feel like I received a false negative for a UTI due to drinking too much water.
If it is super diluted it definately could.
Thank you. I circled A and then I was thinking if one wants to collect a 24 hours urine, he or she needs to start in the morning first. Thank you

What does it mean when the urobilinogen is orange? The only other factor that seem off is specific gravity. Bilirubin is negative.

I actually made a video on that. It is called Urine test results and your health.

I watched a few videos about this subject and no one says what colors You dont want to see on the stick
Very helpful breakdown. Thank you! Great job!
Thank you!
So does specific gravity 1.030 means that you have an infection ?
Not necessarily, but there's something in there. In addition to leukocytes, blood, etc-yes, but if it's just a higher specific gravity with say higher protein it could be mucus, or kidney issues like a stone or kidney disease. I had a high specific gravity when I was having a lot of back pain, there was quite a bit of mucus in my urine probably due to the inflammation, but it was not an infection.
Does taking probiotics affect the test result?
Thank you for the informative video🙏
Nope, they shouldn't!
Tks a lot:)
thank you just one quick question, can this type of analysis detect different types of drugs?
Nope this is to check for things like a urinary tract infection or kidney infection.

Leukocytes seem to be measured as “ca cells/ul” (as noted on the dip stick keys). What does the “ca” stand for? Cancer??? Can these decrease without having cancer?
Not sure what units those are, but it definitely does not stand for cancer. And it would be increased numbers correlate to uti's.
What is the significance of Ascorbic acid in urine
The nitrites on mine show a pink color. Is it something I should take seriously? How dangerous is it?
Positive Nitrites means your urine has nitrite producing bacteria, like E. Coli, so it can be very serious, especially if it migrates to the kidneys. Best to be seen by a provider and get on antibiotics for the infection.
No explanation as to why one gets a distinct change in colors on the dipstick after 5 minutes - no change until 4 minutes. Nothing in the 120 second time.
If there is no color change within 120 seconds for that specific analyst, then it is negative. There could be color changes outside of the time frame due to very small quantities, but are low enough to not quantify.
Is fasting necessary to take the test? When is the right time to do the test, especially for Keto? I mean after meal? after exersice?

On the blood one.. whats the difference between hemolysis and "non-hemolysis" blood?

So what does your average urine test at a yearly doctors appointment test for?
These same parameters, basically seeing if you have a UTI, or something looks off with your results, if you are diabetic they would also do a urine microalbumin.
@@MedicalMaura something off like ? STI's?
@@Keepit-dy3yq yeah it could point in that direction, especially if it's a visibly motile one like Trichomoniasis

Thank you so much. How do i record the results again? Is it by using +++ when something is positive
If an analyzer is not reading the strips, you would write down which gradient pad it changed to. So for nitrites it would be positive or negative. But others it would be like negative or 1+, 2+, 3+ or 4+, etc.
@@MedicalMaura thank you. You are very helpful and kind. God bless you
quick uestion for a random drug test or pre employment what is the point of sending the samples off to a lab, i'm sure they check for temperature and drugs on the spot with a 5 panel dip stick urine test so what's the point of having to send it off for lab results that take up to 4 says to get results i don't get it
So for one of 2 reasons, some drug screen cups dont have the drug testing on the side of the cup, they are all just temp markers, so all of them get sent to the lab, or if one or more of the 5 drug screens on the cup look positive, then they would get sent to the lab.
But this dipstick testing is for UTI's. Drug screening tests arent called dipstick testing in the lab setting (I think police might dipstick urines?)

sorry for all the questions i have a buddy who has one of these soon and he is pretty worried.

This was really helpful 💖
what does specific gravity 1.015- 1.020 indicate? is there any concern we should be awaring? i read google it just saying whether that person is hydrated or dehydrated
That's considered a normal level. It can be hydration, or overly hydrated (at low levels) but higher levels can be dehydration or just the amount of things in a urine (protein, casts, mucus, etc) which doesn't have to do much with hydration status.
Can they tell if it’s old ?

So keeping it simple.... the further right you are on the chart means you have a bladder infection right? What 2-3 are for bladder infections?
Basically, but could be other reasons like a kidney infection or even kidney failure, depends on which tests are positive, not all mean a UTI, like if it's just blood and not white blood cells, could be something else besides a uti. Also you can have a low pH or a high pH and it be a UTI
very informative. Can drugs be detected via dipstick?
Not this type of dipstick, no.
i have 2 sides on my test strip 1 side has a dark red side saying eddp? what is that ?
Thank you very much for your expert information video 👍🏻
Can I ask what number/colour is best for pH ?🤔
Anything close to 7 is good. But lower and higher numbers don't mean a whole lot. I've seen some UTI bacteria cause a high pH like 8 or even 9, but low pH can be common as well.
Very well explained, thanks!

If I pass a drug urine dipstick test would a pass a lab test?
Hi can you describe the difference between test and blank?
Medical Maura thank you so much for your quick answer!! Very appreciated
So if it changes purple, meaning an infection what testing should be done?
Well a person might require antibiotics if an infection is suspected. Therefore, a microscopic analysis of the urine should be done and a urine culture if indicated to find out the type of bacterial infection.

A couple of weeks ago I did a urine test with a test strip my protein was negative but i still get some foam in my pee
For how long should i keep the tester in the urine?
Each set of strips is different, but usually around 30 seconds- 1 minute
What if it shows blood...?
Thank you. Really helpful. Love from 🇮🇳
Is it combina 3 (Germany ) dipstrip?
Nope.
How do I know how to place the strips to compare the colour chat

Actually I have found a medtox pdf that has some interfering substances listed for each type of drug, and what can cause a false positive. Since Suboxone is made up of Buprenorphine and naloxone I looked them up. It does have naloxone listed as a possible false positive for oxy at a pretty high concentration of 1O,OOO ng/ml when the cut off for ocycodone is normally 1OO ng/ml of oxycodone. So not sure how feasible that is, but it is a possibility. It's at www.medtox.com/resources/images/6817.pdf
Nice video, good info. Are these test kits sold in local stores? If so, how accurate are they? Thanks for posting.

If it's a pretty bad UTI you'll have a 2 or 3 plus no matter what time of day it is.. and idk about that brand specifically, so couldn't say either way!

is the test that you would receive at a physical?

What does 1+ small Bilirubin, 1+ Ketones and 1 mg Urobilinogen mean?
Could mean a lot of things, or not much, basically. Did you discuss with your physician? 1+ and 1 mg aren't very high amounts, so not necessarily anything to worry about, but the presence of bilirubin and urobilinogen could mean an intestinal issue or liver issue. (They are breakdown/bi-products of red blood cells). Ketones are pretty common in urine, and can show up with a high protein diet, or if you were fasting.
