I've been using the Lagom mini daily for 7 months now, it ended my tinkering and buying spree. It's a perfect conical grinder for a home barista that's making 1-3 coffees a day. The form factor, the workflow, the sleekness and quietness, it's perfect if you want a fuss-free premium experience without spending more than $1k. It made me focus less on gear and more on brewing coffee and tasting different coffees. Down the line I might get a P64, but for now, this is absolutely perfect!
Fully agreed. And because it takes up so little counter space, it can be paired with an Encore or Solis Scala Zero if you want a nice budget grinder for bigger brews
I’ve owned a mini with the obsydian burrs for 8 months. My roommates and I make pourover about 3-5 times a day. I sometimes use a cheap sifter to remove fines and a small bellows to clear out retention or to hold an extra 10g of beans for batch brews. It’s not super fast, but it’s really quiet and takes up barely any counter space. I would say the only thing I don’t like is the big white power brick, but it never gets in the way. Overall an amazing upgrade for me from a 10-year old Baratza Encore.
I've had the Lagom Mini with moonshines for a few weeks now. I really enjoy using it - such a fun form factor and the ability to use it as a decaf grinder so I can leave the espresso settings on my main grinder is so nice. It's also the same size-ish as a hand grander so it's portability is very high. Looking forward to trying it out for that purpose soon.
Nice! Glad to hear you’re enjoying it, and it’s definitely a solid choice for a decaf grinder. Definitely want to get one for myself as a quality back up.
My lagom mini still has the numbering on the dial. I don’t know why they removed it for a more minimalistic look. Tried the one like yours, definitely makes grind adjustment a lil more confusing. Thought I was missing out on the new design, but I realized the numbering is very helpful. Also, thank you for the great video!
I’ve had one for a few months and absolutely love it. It’s my first espresso grinder, and I use it in combination with a Wacaco Picopresso. I got the obsidian burrs.
Definitely. It’s my first foray into espresso, and I wanted a setup that would be easy to upgrade in the future. I’m thinking that a Gaggia Classic Pro is my next buy
Love my Lagom Mini with the Moonshine. I wanted the higher clarity. I wind up using it solely for espresso and now have my encore dedicated for filter (with m2 burr). Keeping it dedicated to espresso, and only having one espresso beam bag at a time has meant I don't need to worry about needing numbers for adjustments
How do you find the moonshine for espresso? I'd like to use this with something like the 9Barista in the future, but it would be nice to have it for the daily pourover as well.
"when I hear the word MINI in the name" .... Had to laugh hearing those words come out of the mouth of such a Linea Mini lover. When you said the grind times crossed it off the list. I. That price class, build quality is not the only consideration. And it looks nice, don't get me wrong. The dosing cup seems rather narrow, but that may have been just from the camera angles shown. And I agree, the grind markings need to be tweaked for better location recognition.
I have it and have loved it so far. It hasn’t replaced my Ode with SSP’s, but it’s an awesome conical profile to get a taste of both worlds. It has essentially eliminated my need for an actual hand grinder. If I’m traveling anywhere, packing the Mini takes as much space, with the added convenience of being electric 😊.
Good to see you review this one mate. I’ve had mine for 3 or 4 months, absolutely love it, IMO it has to be one of the best value buys on the market for a single dose grinder. With moonshine burrs it’s ~$600 Aussie dollars vs $1800 for a niche if you buy from an Aussie retailer. If you like clarity / modern style espresso, you will prefer the espresso from the LM with moonshines vs niche. I was amazed at how much I preferred the espresso from it compared to my niche. I’d almost say that in terms of results in the cup, the differences from the niche to the LM are bigger than the LM to my p64 (with MP burrs). Interesting to see you didn’t mention stalling at all - I assume then you had no issues? When my burrs weren’t seasoned I had a few occasions on lighter roasts espresso settings where the motor would briefly stop and then quickly start again. I use this for my travel grinder / days in office grinder - If I was using this as my daily driver for espresso I might be a little worried about many years I’d get out of it.
Great content, way better than the rest of the coffee youtubers. The moonshine burrs might have a different geometry but because they grind so slow with the same rpm as obsydian I suspect they let less beans getting inside the burrs, so the grind is more uniform because the grinds are not pushed out so fast of the beans entering the burrs, like it happens with the obsydian burr. The same thing happens if you compare C40 vs kinu. Kinu has half of the grind time of a comandante for the same reason. They did that with the niche, they added the nfc disk to reduce bean intake for the burrs, making it a bit better.
Thanks Denis, I put a lot of thought and time into my videos and I always just aim to be straight forward and to the point, especially with reviews. There’s a lot of people in the coffee content space, and I think everyone has their angle, so it’s all just part of the content program. And that’s a good point about the moonshine, and entirely possible!
Good points! Have you tried the Kinu pour over burr? Grinding takes way longer with the Kinu pour over burr as compared to its stock burr. It would be cool to do a side by side comparison of the Kinu pour over burr and Obsidian burr.
@@shawnsgear i use the stock kinu burr. I'm not really interested or curious about anything else. Works great in brew for me and did work great for world brewers cup winner too.
Great review! Bought my Lagom mini about 2 months ago and absolutely love it. Never liked the look of the niche, and this was a bit cheaper. That stepless adjustment and low retention makes brewing new coffees super quick and fun. The work flow is really easy, and my only critique is I wish the grinder had auto shut off. I decided to go with the obsidian burrs and I think you've justified my choice well. If I want more clarity, and have more money to spend maybe someday I’ll pick up a P64 😜
I've had my lagom mini for a few months now , but I think for my espresso shots I have a difficulty grinding med-dark roast since my moonshine burr gets stuck and its kind of frustrating trying to jiggle the retention to loosen up stuck beans so I have to feed my beans in. My light roast bean I've been drinking hasn't had any issue so far in the grinder.
Niche owner of about 2 years. I don't think I'd replace it with a mini, but if I'd been looking to but my first grinder in that price range I think it'd be a tough decision now. My next step is probably its big brother the P64, that's a way down the line for me. I think I'd upgrade from my flair pro to something like a Decent first.
Pair this with a Gaggia Classic, rancilio silvia etc and you’re all set for a relatively affordable good setup with functional sleek looks and plenty of counter space left over. Oh and great coffee too😂!
With the moonshine burr set, how does lagom Mini compare to a flat burr like the DF64 for example? I have an Argos lever on order and a Baratza Preciso on my brew bar at home and so I have been in market for a flat burr because I want more clarity for espresso. That is the context of the question, so for me it is something like Lagom Mini Moonshine burr vs flat burr. I found it interesting your findings with higher extraction and a "flat burr like" experience in the cup.
I only just received the DF64P in the mail yesterday, so I can’t say at this point where it sits, but I can say the overall clarity of moonshine burrs is similar, but still not at the point my 64mm Multipurpose burrs are at. But I do think the moonshines are like a both worlds option, and still carry some of the body I love from conicals on espresso.
Clear and accurate review. I have a Mini and gee mine came with the grind size dots numbered! (perhaps an earlier version, but why would they remove a feature like that, I doubt it saves them money in the manufacture??) I also have the 48mm obsydian burrs. I only use the Mini for pour over grinding. I think the Niche is a better overall pick if you brew as many expressos as pour overs. I haven't directly compared taste of pour overs between Mini and Niche, but I vaguely recall they're about the same. Your insight about the name "Mini" is spot on! I had not considered that, but as soon as you said it, I knew you were right. Option-O should have left the numbering on and come up with a better name. Build qualtiy is tops, pleasure to use.
Nice review thanks, considering purchasing due to the small footprint yet excellent performance. If you get time someday, any chance you’d be able to make a video on how to dial it in and clean it, since this model doesn’t have the numbers? Cheers!
Any issues with stalling in your experience? That and general motor life expectancy are my main concern with these smaller grinders. Great review as always my friend.
Do you think this is a worthwhile upgrade vs the built in grinder in the Sage/Brevel barista series ? If yes, what should I expect in the cup over that? Thanks in advance!
Have both NZ and mini moonshine. Enjoy using both. NZ is better on workflow when I pair it with my DE1. Mini is a bit slow for making back to back drink in the office for guests. Using Mini at home with my filter and Flair 58, and it takes care of all my coffee needs.
I’ve had the lagom mini for maybe a month and a half? I personally love it, but I’ve been having some issues with the exact point you made about the moonshine producing really quick shots. I find it a little difficult to dial in to a good time for coffees without choking or speeding through the shot. BUT once I get it there, it’s beautiful and delicious.
Wow, this sounds like a great find. I refused to buy the Niche or the Fellow Ode because unless I start running a coffee house, I don't think a coffee grinder should be a high-profile item in my kitchen. I want a coffee grinder that's great at grinding coffee--but doesn't grab attention--or counter space--when not in use. Do you have a link for buying it. I might as well give you the credit.
Great review! Should I get the moonshine or the obysidian burr for espresso? I tend to like light and medium roasts.. I'm trying to upgrade from a knock aergrind.
I think I'm ready to move on from my normcore hand grinder and upgrade to something electric for my espresso. I do still like to make pour over every once and a while though. But I'm torn on which route I should go, hold out a little longer and save some more money for a Niche Zero (which I do not like the look of, but seems to be a very popular grinder) or buy a Lagom Mini right now (which I like the sleek aesthetic of much more than the Niche).
I’ve had the mini with moonshine burrs for a couple of weeks, and it’s perfect for my 1-2 shots a day with my Cafelat Robot. I love that it’s a stepless grinder under $500. I also don’t find the lack of numbering too annoying, since I’m not adjusting it more than 1-2 dots for espresso, and you can just do one full rotation to switch to filter. Really great product that also looks and feels premium.
Glad to hear that you’re enjoying it. I had a lot of fun with it. Simple, clean and effective. In my mind it’s the entry level premium grinder I’ll be recommending moving forward. And I think the newest versions may actually have numbers haha.
@@Sprometheus that’s funny, since the old versions used to have numbers. I guess they’ve gotten enough negative feedback. I think the mini + baratza encore or solis scala zero is an incredible grinder combo for $600 total that would be perfect for the vast majority of home coffee enthusiasts
@@jacobfiksel3600 Jacob Fiksel, I have the robot as well with a 1zpresso J-Max. Do you still like the moonshine burrs for the robot? Trying to decide which burr set to go with.
@@jwanger142 I do really like the moonshine burrs. I think you can always order both sets of burrs since it looks easy to change them. But the moonshines have been great for both espresso with the robot and also filter coffee
I sold my niche to buy a lagom mini - I am so so so much happier with the mini, niche was great for espresso but pretty poor on filter. Lagom mini does about as well on espresso but much better on filter. The slower grind time is no big thing at all
The one worrying thing about the lagom mini is that there a quite a number of motor gearbox failures, but at least Option-o is good about getting you replacements if it happens
I’ve looked around and seen some mentions of issues, but I will say like you said, Option-O has been very responsive and kind. Plus, they’re always making updates on these pieces based on feedback, and I love a company that does that.
I don't like the Niche. I am kind of looking for a dedicated pour over grinder. Although I personally prefer flat burrs I also don't like Fellow Ode. So making my choices very narrow. I am currently looking at this, Wilf Uniform and whatever else that I come upon during my search path. I am also not interested in Timemore. If you have other electric grinder for pour over, I would love to know.
I've been using this grinder for about 4 months now and love it. Retention is very low, as Spro mentioned, but especially if you give your beans a quick spritz with water before loading (a tip from James Hoffman). I have a mini spritz bottle by my grinder and that prevents any static from causing retention. I change brew methods a lot and have found it to be very consistent. I only wish I could easily reset the dial so that true zero (as marked on the dial) was the lock point. Since I have not figured out if that's possible, I've just marked the zero point with tape so that I know when I've made a full rotation. Any ideas on this?
I got dot stickers with my Lagom Mini, I just placed them above the original dots to mark the true zero and some other points for different brew methods. I just use a contrast dot for true zero and brew method marking. Makes life a lot easier to count.
Did you ever have any stalling come from the mini? I've had mine for almost a year, before they announced the moonshine set. I'm on the Obsydian burrs, and occasionally grinding fine on light roasted coffee does stall the grinder, but it never really hampers it as it does eventually power through it.
Enjoyed the video. I'm curious to see how this compares to the new burs on the Fellow Ode. BTW, can you remind me whereyou get your ceramic espresso cups?
@The Real Sprometheus, is there a solid espresso machine & grinder that you would recommend that could be used interchangeably for home and small business use?
Thanks for this. My Niche is still safe in the kitchen, but today there are lots of interesting newer grinders that should be considered by those wanting their first (electric) grinder. Replacing the Niche would be for me a step up the price range, which I am not looking to do at present - use the money for trying different coffees. I would be concerned about the longevity of the MINI, given the recommendations of a 2 X 90 second cycle time for back to back espresso shots - although they earn points for being explicit about it. (So, that was first Thumbs up and first Comment, I believe)
I get you, and if I had a Niche already I’d have the same outlook. More or less going to the Mini would be a side step and not and upgrade. And yeah, the motor is the main concern, which is a risk I’d consider before committing to one. But I think in most use cases it would be perfectly fine, and in my lab it may struggle a bit haha.
Great to see that this grinder is finally featured here I own the Lagom Mini and the LCU. In side by side spro comparisons, I found that the Mini left me wanting when going for very high EY shots at longer shot times. (In those cases the balance was actually a little bit off in comparison.) The body is pretty good but most of the roasts in my corner are too light for it anyway. Funnily, my version of the mini does have numbering on the grind adjustment "dial" (-piece) unlike yours so that's one downside less. Also, have you tried going for a hot start on the Obsidian setup? Your video suggest that you cold start, and I find the cups ever so slightly more enjoyable for the burr choice.
Personally I’d go for the Moonshine as they produce more clarity and that’s what I like in filter coffee, and the HU in the P64 are intended for espresso and are a little finicky for filter. But the Obsydian are great all rounders.
@@Sprometheus thank you for your reply. My final decision is: Filters coffee: Comandante C40 Espresso: Kinu M47 and… saving money for P100. I owned a ZF64W (some place calls RF64W) titanium 64 burrs. It is a NOT BAD grinder, but for home use… too much retention.
Well I just got the DF64P yesterday, so unfortunately it’ll take me about a month or so to get some time on it and tests before I can say definitively. It seems the DF line has been very well received over the past couple years so I can’t imagine you can go wrong with either. But when you’re still looking at a flat burr vs conicals you’re still going to get more clarity from flats, especially the SSP MP over most if not all conicals I’ve had. I’d say beyond that the things worth considering are maybe grind speed, size of the grinder, and availability and choose the one that hits most or all of the positives for you.
Wait, i rewatched ur video and did you mention that moonshine produce too fast of an traditional espresso? Is it just not capable or u mean by the same grind setting? i really love 9 bars 50 sec shot on flair pro2(up to beans of course) i was about to get it so i look it up again and get confused😅
I had no jamming issues over the few months I had it. According to their website they’ve upgraded the motor, not sure if that’s a recent update that occurred after the other reviews brought it up. Option-O tends to be on top of making changes.
@@jacobfiksel3600 I tried and shipping at checkout was 99k$ so I emailed them. They replied saying currently they are dealing with primacoffee and to order from them
It's worth nothing that the niche zero price seems to have dropped. It's now available at 499€, and the exchange rate is now favorable. You're showing the lagom mini at $485 in one of the screenshots, so... same price? If so, what's your opinion on direct head to head?
Direct head to head, at least from my limited experience with the Mini and a lot with the Niche I would say they’re very close. Personally I like the look of the Mini more, but have found the motor in the Niche to be rock solid in my 2+ years of ownership. With a choice of burrs, I think that slightly edged the Mini up, but that only matters to some folks.
@@stirfryjedi yeah, but I'm not sure what the screenshot was where I saw 485. Looks like the lagom mini is more like $400 with shipping. (Probably tax on top of that, too).

A quality grinder made with premium materials and burr options for $500 does sound surprisingly good after being sold $1k and up form over function options on Kickstarter campaigns for years.
Yeah, so? Take it or leave it. No one’s forcing you to believe me. Oh no ! That’s my daily pour over batch size
@@reactionsok yea, that part was annoying for me. I went with the ode gen 2 for coffee. Lagom mostly for espresso or aeropress.
Great review!
Should I get the moonshine or the obysidian burr for espresso?
I tend to like light and medium roasts.. I'm trying to upgrade from a knock aergrind.
Where can i buy the espresso filters that you use ?
I think I'm ready to move on from my normcore hand grinder and upgrade to something electric for my espresso. I do still like to make pour over every once and a while though. But I'm torn on which route I should go, hold out a little longer and save some more money for a Niche Zero (which I do not like the look of, but seems to be a very popular grinder) or buy a Lagom Mini right now (which I like the sleek aesthetic of much more than the Niche).
Nice roest
I've been looking at one of these....
Can't wait for the review
The slower grind time is no big thing at all
Which burrs do you use?
love you spro
Love you too Fam, thanks for being kind!
Hi, from the video it seems you don't connect thre lagom to a plug. Does it work with batteries?
The one worrying thing about the lagom mini is that there a quite a number of motor gearbox failures, but at least Option-o is good about getting you replacements if it happens
I’ve looked around and seen some mentions of issues, but I will say like you said, Option-O has been very responsive and kind. Plus, they’re always making updates on these pieces based on feedback, and I love a company that does that.
@@Sprometheus I know of at least 10 cases overall, someone pops up every now and then with this issue on discord
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you for this video !
I love the form factor, and the name of course. Lagom means, loosely translated, "just right" in Swedish.
Enjoyed the video. I'm curious to see how this compares to the new burs on the Fellow Ode. BTW, can you remind me whereyou get your ceramic espresso cups?
Which burr set would you recommend for filter?
I would say it depends on your preferences. For me I love clarity in my filter, so I would lean more towards Moonshine.
Thanks for the review. How does it compare with the arco?
@The Real Sprometheus, is there a solid espresso machine & grinder that you would recommend that could be used interchangeably for home and small business use?
Would the Option O Lagom Mini be a logical upgrade from a 1ZPresso JX Pro before going full end game(P64)?
I’ve been using it for a while now.
It stalls when grinding medium to light roast beans.
I’ve heard that’s an issue, but I never experienced it. According to Option-O the motor has been upgraded from earlier models, so that’s likely why.
@@Sprometheus
Hope the new motor will be available as an upgrade part soon or I will upgrade to DF83.😏😏😏
How's the static?
I've seen reports of stalling especially on finer settings like for expresso. Have you faced such thing in your time with it?
In my time with the grinder I had no stalling issues. They did recently update the motor according to their website, so maybe that’s the case.
@@Sprometheus that’s fantastic to hear! Thanks a lot.
Niche for espresso and Lagom mini (+moonshire) for filter
I would like to see a comparison with Ascaso i2
I’ll see what I can do! Unfortunately I’ve got to send the Lagom Mini on its way, but I may end up buying one for myself.
@@Sprometheus i2 has 38mm conical burrs, but it's very well sold in Europe and almost the same price range
Great to see that this grinder is finally featured here
I own the Lagom Mini and the LCU.
Which burr for Mini should I choose if I will have my P64 with HU burr?
Personally I’d go for the Moonshine as they produce more clarity and that’s what I like in filter coffee, and the HU in the P64 are intended for espresso and are a little finicky for filter. But the Obsydian are great all rounders.
@@Sprometheus thank you for your reply. My final decision is:
Filters coffee: Comandante C40
Espresso: Kinu M47 and… saving money for P100.
I owned a ZF64W (some place calls RF64W) titanium 64 burrs. It is a NOT BAD grinder, but for home use… too much retention.
Great video 👍 Keep em coming!
im considering this vs df64 SSP MP burr for 1-2 espresso/filter per day mostly light roast what would u recommended?
Well I just got the DF64P yesterday, so unfortunately it’ll take me about a month or so to get some time on it and tests before I can say definitively. It seems the DF line has been very well received over the past couple years so I can’t imagine you can go wrong with either. But when you’re still looking at a flat burr vs conicals you’re still going to get more clarity from flats, especially the SSP MP over most if not all conicals I’ve had. I’d say beyond that the things worth considering are maybe grind speed, size of the grinder, and availability and choose the one that hits most or all of the positives for you.
Would love to hear long term run of the mini! Thx for rly nice content
Varia vs3 and a bit cheaper?
Did you not have issues with light roasts or harder beans locking up the grinder? Alot of other reviews seems to have issues with that.
I had no jamming issues over the few months I had it. According to their website they’ve upgraded the motor, not sure if that’s a recent update that occurred after the other reviews brought it up. Option-O tends to be on top of making changes.
Tell Option O to ship to the US from their website
They do, I bought mine directly from Option O
@@jacobfiksel3600 I tried and shipping at checkout was 99k$ so I emailed them. They replied saying currently they are dealing with primacoffee and to order from them
@@dmd1344 interesting, they also do that for the P64, although I was able to purchase a lagom mini from them last month and have it shipped to the US.
Thanks for pointing out the exchange rate change, Ben! That's awfully tempting.
@@stirfryjedi yeah, but I'm not sure what the screenshot was where I saw 485. Looks like the lagom mini is more like $400 with shipping. (Probably tax on top of that, too).
I ordered my Lagom Mini to the USA directly from Option-O and it cost $427 including shipping and taxes
@@jacobfiksel3600 Showing $374 at Option O link from Sprometheus notes here on Sept 24, 2022, but I didn't go through the cart to the shipping handling and tax.
great vid!
Have you tried and reviewed the Ceado e37z-hero? Although it's $5000, I believe it's the best espresso single dose grinder in the market.
it is my Travel-Grinder for Bialetti.
Shotquality for Espresso is not top. on paar with my old Iberital
is someone selling this grinder?
I think I'm a little skeptical about anything that's small. I think it's a lot of money. I'd rather spend the extra money in e37s
niche is goat. goes head to head with grinders 4x the cost. only drawback is grind time which is not that bad and definitely plenty good for home espresso.
weird, my mini definitely has numbers on each dot
Niche is still the GOAT 🐐
Also worth noting is it has a universal power supply. Useful for globetrotters such as myself.
It allmost sounds too good to be true...
A quality grinder made with premium materials and burr options for $500 does sound surprisingly good after being sold $1k and up form over function options on Kickstarter campaigns for years.
Out of stock, pre order. MEh
Here’s my unbiased review of a free demo unit from the manufacturer 🫣
Yeah, so? Take it or leave it. No one’s forcing you to believe me. But after years of doing this and being up front with manufacturers and distributors they know the deal, and some avoid me because I don’t allow them to make edits. I take an extreme level of pride in my ethics and approach to reviews.
