    Won't the angle of torso depend on the degree of shoulder external rotation a person can achieve? Those who cannot externally rotate all the way should probably set the seat back at a slight incline.

    I've plateaued on this exericse badly and I'm not sure how to make improvements. I can managearound 8-10 reps of 20kg dumbells but only manage 3 reps on 22.5kg (And thats on a good day). I've switched up my shoulder workouts a lot but Im not making any improvements on this yet I am making steady progression on all my other exercises. Any tips for getting stronger with this exercise ? Hopefully you can give some advice on this, thanks :)

      Work your rear delts. With facepulls. Most people have weak rear delts. They wonder why they can't press properly, but only two of the three parts of the shoulder are strong enough to do it in most people.

  • @benrichards35
    @benrichards35 7 років тому +1

    would you recommend the Arnold press in the same position? a 180 deg rotation through the press? its supposed to work all three heads of the deltoid. its one i prefer for dumbbells and do a straight military press with a barbell.

    hey buff dudes, how about the elbows facing to the front? I feel like you use a very externally rotated position from the very bottom which may lead to impingement as far my experience goes.
    would be glad to hear your answer :)

    • @Auxified
      @Auxified 7 років тому +3

      The short answer is that 90 degrees in either direction is bad, and that you should probably aim for a 45 degree angle or so. I'll elaborate though. Elbow directly in front causes damage over time because elbow pointing straight ahead requires internal rotation of shoulder. Internal rotation + raising arm straight up = no real chance for shoulder to roll back, which is a requirement for arms over head safely. Similarly external rotation of shoulder to a 90 degree angle will also cause impingement because of shoulder ball and socket pressing into back. Optimal placement is gonna be different for everyone, but go with your body on this one. Try putting your hands above your head and slowly dropping them down by only bringing your elbows straight down. For me this is roughly a 45 degree angle.
      EDIT: I'd also like to add that the overhead press is basically a bench press but over your head. These same rules apply for the bench press as well, and many experts will tell you keep elbows at about 45 degrees in that exercise as well.

    What is a good weight to start at? And for each set do you add weight? Ex.10 reps 50,8 reps 65, 5 reps 80?
    Really need help getting going...

    • @jjwp-ql5rv
      @jjwp-ql5rv 5 років тому

      A good weight to use?
      Ignore the number on the side of the weight. You do not choose a weight to use, let your body tell you the weight to use. If you want to do ten reps, use a weight that you can complete ten with. 99% of people just pick up weights with no idea if they're heavy or not and just struggle with the excercise. Form is key.

    I suggest using a bench that you can set up a little bit declined with full back support, in order to keep the shoulders in a natural position throughout the lift, with light weights you will be able to perform the exercise either way, once you start lifting heavy you are risking shoulder injury, I have been there, form and a proper set up will save you trips to the doctors and missed gym days, and overall health of your joints, be smart, an injured rotator cuff is not a pleasant experience

    First day impressions:It arrived in a waist high box. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxP26Tir6n60vUkdtn4mbwhRO8cwuJQNy2 Each dumbbell was in its own foam box within the shipping box. Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

      Im not sure if its really genetics cuz my front delt looks really big compared to side and rear delt so im sure those two muscles can be just as big as my front delt, but I do the regular side delt cables and dumbbell version but somehow I dont hit them good enough and no other exercise hit the side delt like the side laterals so im lost lol...I might try kettlebell overhead press heard it hits ur shoulder in a different way I heard.

    • @madmike987655

      High reps for the lateral delts. I do seated side raises with about 20% of my max weight on shoulder press, I do 5 reps, hold for 5 seconds, then 4 reps and hold for 4 seconds all the way down to 1 rep for 1 second. Rest for about 90 seconds and go again. When the weight is too heavy for manage at least half of the reps done, drop the weight a small amount and go again. keep doing all this until failure. Make sure to never lift your shoulders while doing the movement, and use no momentum at all, go slow on the lowering part of the motion too. Trust me you'll make instant improvements in your look.
