If the trap doesn't work take a round, set it on end, place some meat on it three or four days in a row. For the next three weeks that fox will be checking that round every hour or so. Put a game camera out you won't believe how often he comes back to check. Set up and pew pew.

You aren’t kidding anyone with that mini cabin stuff. That’s really an extravagant deer blind, isn’t it. That way you can be on stand in comfort. Have yourself a bed, cook stove, tv, and recliner set by a sliding window. It’s a good idea, whether it’s for deer hunting or not.

I read some of the folks a worried you might catch a skunk.I have caught several of the little stinkers in live traps and have learned how to handle them in a trap. Get a blanket that will cover you completely and hold the blanket up in front of you not over you from quiet a distance so you dont anger the skunk, slowly, slowly walk to your trap without dropping the blanket and allowing the skunk to see you. When you get to the cage slowly lay the blanket over the cage very easy completely covering the cage. Pick the cage up very easily and place it in the back of your truck and take it to a pond and slowly drop the cage blanket and all into the water and drown the skunk. This is the only way i have found to get rid of them without getting sprayed. It works every time unless the skunk has already sprayed when they are trapped Not allowing the skunk to see you and moving quietly as possible and slowly is the key. I hope you dont catch one but this works every time here in Oklahoma,,,,,,,,,,,,, God Bless

Best way to catch a fox is put a feed bag over the trap [trap inside the bag]. Otherwise the sly old fox will NOT go into the trap. Sardines are prime bait.

    @garysisk3431 5 років тому

Subscribed, got to see what you catch. Trapped around schools for 30 years, was the maintenance supervisor. Anyway, trap as set might catch a skunk or racoon, they are easy to trap. Fox, a little smarter "normally" but this one is humanized so maybe easyier. Try baiting a few days before setting the trap, get him used to it. Then he may go in, may have to cover the trap with branches etc.

I live on the edge of a medium size city next to a large city park and across the street from the city/county road. I look out back and a Kit Fox comes out from under my shed. Well I see maybe 2-3 foxes a year because they’re kinda shy. Well after about 15 minutes there is 5 kit foxes standing in the ramp of my shed. I’m like holy crap!!! The mother wasn’t any where to be seen and I knew they’d be on their way in a day or 2. I set out some water and sure enough they all left in about 5 days. Very cool watching them play and chase each other. Kinda hope one stops by next spring too

I would set the trap next to the fence right where the fox comes through the fence. If you trap a skunk throw a tarp over the trap before you try to move the trap, that way your less likely to get sprayed. hold the tarp up in front of you like a curtain to shield you as you approach the trap. This worked for me a few months ago and the skunk didn't spray. Good luck :)

Fox are extremely smart and very cunning. Scent control is imperative. A live chicken makes a great "bait". I have used them on coyotes with good success, Good Luck because he is not going anywhere until the food source dries up or you get real lucky. A rifle/shotgun with a red light, a fox call, and fox urine at night is a pretty effective method of control.

I've got large cage traps. Put some branches around trap, for camouflage. Put trap along the wall of that structure you are building. 53 years ago animals went in those traps much easier. These days, animals seem wary, like they've learned over time, and evolved to avoid.
I spent 11 months hunting the yote that ate a dozen of my Flemish giant rabbits. I got him in the temple, offhand, on my M-25 Marlin, .22mag. Boom, one tail wiggle dirt nap. I sure felt better. You don't look like the type to use jaw traps, but those work good too. Better than cage. You don't have to be nice to varmints, they aren't nice to your livestock.
Get a good range dog. Make a good fence, use no-climb, and rocks at base, both side.

Funny story with the Fox and Melissa thinking you and Levi were arguing and she fixing to go Vanilla - "Yo, gotta problem, I'll solve it" - Ice on you two... 😁.... Melissa, you a trip!... No vid of Levi staking wood and loading totes? Ya slackin' Mike. J/k.😉... Tuna Fish and leave it in the can, barely pop the lid, cuts down on flies/maggots, makes it harder for animals to get into it, ergo they have to stay in trap longer messin around to get at food making chances of them triggering trap more successful. The smell of Tuna Fish No critter can resist. ALSO, the Fox is use to being in your yard, just place trap inside the fence so you can see it from a window in your house to keep a check on it. Lesser chance of catching Other critters in your yard than out in the woods.👍

I agree, posts rot at ground level. When I plant a post I like to use a treated post if possible and put gravel in the bottom of the hole, put the post in and fill the hole completely with concrete. Like you I pour it in dry but at the top I go above hole level with wet concrete and slope it down from the post. This way the water runs away from the post and the post will dry quickly. I have never had one rot when done this way.

    Posts.
There's two kinds of pt lumber. There's the plain old outdoor kind and there's the damp environment kind (dark green).
Around here in OH, you have to have a 1' diameter footer under the post. You're not supposed to surround the post with concrete. The post is supposed to sit on top. Of course, building codes vary.
Of course, you can also attach the post to a bracket mounted to a concrete footer that sticks out of the ground, but you don't get the rigidity with that design.

Mike and Melissa, my opinion is what you have is a young fox probably just born this last spring they have very little fear of humans and will come right up in your backyard.I had three mother foxes a few years ago give birth to 11 babies by the end of July they would come out of the woods and run right up to you in our yard.no fear at all. When they’re young like that they’re very opportunistic hunters and will take chances that the older more mature fox won’t.
As far as your live trap goes it’s not the most ideal but under your circumstances probably the best because you don’t want to be catching your dogs or other pets in a leg hold trap. I used to trap when I was a young teenager into my early 20s and I have caught many fox. My suggestion would be get rid of the bowl that holds the food and put it on the ground in the back of the trap also cover the trap with sticks and leaves and make it almost like a den or a cave. that bare wire trap sitting out there in the open will make all of your little friends alarm bells go off.
There are some suggestions for you good luck catching your furry friend.
    Doyle from Indiana

Food won't work on the fox, you need a hormone/scent/urine ball hanging in the trap. Also needs to be covered in sticks/leaves, something to make it feel safe. It won't just go in that wide open spot. Might catch the neighbors cat though, ha

Hi...like your videos. Have you ever considered making a crossbow target shooting range with targets set at different distances with an awning, seats, and table for zeroing bows? Something like that would also make a nice place to hang out. Just tossing an idea out there. Keep the videos coming! Thanks!

About setting posts, place gravel at the top of post to provide for drainage. As you said they always fail at ground level. How deep can you go with that backhoe? The varmints like my cat's food. My solution is to remove it at night fall.

I use what they call secums in the place of concrete..its a expandable foam that hardens like concrete!! Its like $80 for 12 packs..you rub it across your leg and it gets hot..open it and it expands!! Just a thought for you guys!! Check my spelling on the name!!!

Mike I want to tell you something you already know, you have the best lady anyone could ever want, shoots like an expert handles herself around that farm like Davy Crockett, I’m 76 but if you ever think you don’t want her anymore please give ma a call lol
Hope you get that peaty fox before he gets your chickens.

The best way to catch a fox is to place traps around where it's getting under or through the fence. If that doesn't work, hire a sniper. Lol. Good luck.

When I'm catching badgers in the same type of trap, the first couple of rounds I only get one of my own farm cats! When I'm let it out the cat stretches and says "nice 'n comfy place and I have my own food too". :-)

I hope Melissa catches the fox but probably a possum first. I've caught several in that same trap and transplanted them in nearby forest. I've also caught 2 skunks and they're no fun. Good luck with the Killer Fox!

I think the best way to plant a post is dig the hole and put crushed stone around the post and this way the water drains off the post probably in time it will rot but it can be easily be replaced.

If you want to get the fox. Get calls app on your cell phone. Hook it to a blue tooth speaker. Put the speaker out in front of you. Call it in and dispatch it. Coyote calls work on fox. Good luck

Melissa, I think you will catch an opossum.
Mike, clamps are indeed handy. I have over 200 of various types and sizes.
Also, your last video was my favorite of all the ones I've seen so far. I even laughed a bit just thinking about it while you were talking about it. Have a great day. I just saw reference to tower blind in episode 9. January 10, 2017

Hi Mike. I don’t know if you get comments from older videos but I watched Melissa and the fox…..was laughing so hard the wife came through to the lounge and asked “what you watching?” I said Outdoors with the Morgans…..Oh is that a comedy show? I said no not normaly.
We have chickens and foxes so I can understand the problem……Say did you ever get that fox? We have a Ridgeback / Mastif cross which dispatches them pretty quick…..just love gthe show

Melissa is so funny. You'll get your fox (eventually). We had the same problem here, but they can only avoid the reaape for so long. I agree with your assesment of the east/west coast video. Keep doing what you do and don't worry about the haters.

when putting post in the ground that you will be building on needs concrete under the post. Without any under it the post will push through and sink into the dirt causing the structure to be compromised.

Fox's tail may prevent the door from coming all the way down. If it doesn't close past a certain point, the fox can push it back up.
