After watching the first 5 episodes of TGH I am hooked. Your earnestness is so refreshing. I am a maths and physics buff, however, I have always wondered what it would be like to read 'The Classics' but never got around to reading any. I hated reading in secondary (My Age: I am now JustNotDeadYet!!!). I was apprehensive at first to take up the challenge. However, your sincerity about yourselves and your situation echoes much of my life. Not essayists nor English literary snobs, time poor, children, and in my case, add teenagers that know more about life than me. Navigating this without losing one's mind is presumptuous at best and then to layer it by embarking upon such a feat as plunging into Homer. I am either losing it or I missed the signpost that read 'point of no return'. But here I am. Onward. I will try and follow along in my copy of Homer and be able to finish this journey battered and bruised and hopefully feeling more connected to the human condition than ever before. I thank you both. P.S I will buy a 'fine' bottle of scotch or bourboun as I read through each volume. I have started with a bottle of japanese whisky called SHIN. Thank you both so much for the encouragement. Cheers to your channel. PS. I believe it is about to explode.
We are stoked that you're joining the great conversations with us... and against ALL ODDS. Family life does add a crazy element, but taking the great books one step at a time they can be accomplished. We realize it will most likely take many years for us but we are excited to read them and document the journey!
Thank you guys for another great video! What a nice surprise to see this on my feed. You’ve given me a lot to think about. The biggest take away I got from this video is the fact that you’re not just reading the story, you’re asking relevant questions about what you’re reading. That is what I need to be working on while I’m reading. So for my part, last week I bought Mortimer Adler’s book ‘How to read a book’ and I’ve put the Iliad on hold while reading thru it. One of the levels of reading beyond the elementary level is asking questions so I found your video extremely relevant to my reading. Thanks again!
We are excited that you're following along with us! Yeah, we are really trying to dig deep to understand the work and its application as to anticipate the coming works in the Great books. Glad we could inspire you in this. Great idea to pick up Adler's book. I think that will be so valuable to read before diving back in.
