What is the Meaning of Suffering?

  • What is the meaning of suffering? One of the problems of life is suffering without meaning. Life is pervaded by suffering, and this suffering must be meaningful. It is hard to deny that to live is to suffer, as long as we do not mean that to live is only to suffer.
One who cannot bear suffering and tries to avoid the unavoidable is bound to end up in existential despair and nihilism, death is just as welcome as there’s no purpose for living.
This video explores how to tackle the problem of suffering ("why do I suffer?"), with the objective of finding a meaning to one's suffering. There are two ideals: to see suffering as a punishment (ascetic ideal) or to seeing it as something for human growth, flourishing and greatness.

Im going to answer before i watch the video or your series on meaning, feel free to disagree. But i must perserve an unaltered philosophy for matters of princible and debate.
Suffering is joy reversed; Without joy there would be no sorrow as is the other way around. Compliments, two sides of the same coin.
But meaning is found in the comicly large void of nothingness and pointlessness we find our universe to be.
If nothing in reality gives meaning to itself, so it must be that meaning derides from you and you alone.
Everything begins and ends with I, eye.
In a scientific sence, your just magic space dust that represents the universe trying to solve itself.

      Opposites are linked.
Think of such things as though they were a coin, everyone pays attention the the faces of the coin. Front or Back, Good or Evil, Morality in Black or White. While sitting with great importance yet ignored in majority, is the slim yet infinitely vast sliver of gray that links the two.
Good and Evil are two faces to the same coin, as you or my Conscenness or Subconscennce, a more topical (funny) example Democrats and Republicans.

Here in Finland, a lot of people like to go to the sauna and then take a swim in the cold lake. When doing that activity, anyone with a bit of observational ability notices that the hot sauna feels much better after the freezing cold lake. And also, the cold lake feels better after some uncomfortable heat in the sauna. So one can develop this appreciation for every moment of discomfort in the cold, and every moment of discomfort in the heat, because one knows that best thing is to embrace both.

The suffering is the guiding light. This i found out after undergoing unwanted suffering for many years. This beginner level of inner work i am speaking of will lead you to deal with the shadow self the ego is purified in the fire as it dies and another pheonix/ego upgraded with the skill set sufficient enough to just barely pass the next phase of your growth... the ego dies and rebirths it self many times throughout ones life...not that we ever paid attention right? well, until now.

Absolutely NOTHING leasts forever, not even pain nor suffering, that means that everything can change for good, so keep moving on with hope, HOPE makes all efforts worth.
I think that it is exactly because the rarity of good in existence that good is valuable.

There is a strong empirical connection between happiness and meaning. The happier you get, the more meaningful life becomes.
Suffering on the other hand is devoid of meaning. One of the worst things about suffering is it's sheer emptiness and meaninglessness.
We tell ourselves that suffering must have meaning, in order to justify it somehow, or make it seem less bad. But empirically, suffering simply has no meaning.
Suffering is bad and there is nothing good about it. It has no meaning.
We can however overcome suffering with biotechnology. (Much of my comment is from philosopher David Pearce)

Plus u said the happier u get the more meaningful life becomes. Yes i agree to some extent but how did ur life get happier in the first place ? .Trust me it got happier bcs u changed something like started a new diet a new hobby etc..Ur life didnt get happier just randomly. And to change is to suffer so must suffer first then u will be happier.Happiness and suffering are twins they must grow together or remain small together.

I agree with you. I drew alot into my twenties, so much that my hand would cramp-up to the point of having to soak it in hot water for 10 minutes every hour while drawing -but I don't consider that and drawing practice to be suffering. It seems that the discomforts and time spent at an art/skill have been defined as "meaningful suffering" by the likes of Nietzsche and Jung, but I don't agree - to me it was meaningful HAPPINESS; the real suffering came during my Dysthymia, when I lost all pleasure in everything, and I didn't experience any hand/forearm cramps while I moped about. Both Nietzsche and Jung couldn't have known anything about neurotransmitters, so while they believed their words were objective, it was really just subjective blah blah blah from two guys who were lucky in the quality of their formative years.

Suffering 'can be' a profound teacher for some and an absolute destroyer for others. Depends on un-quantifiable things like 'soul lessons' and where one is at along the path of their 'souls journey' of learning. Ok, great, but when the body dies, you don't get to take any of it with you. Those lessons you suffered through, they were for the 'soul' and you were almost quite literally, just the 'crash test dummy', the experiencer, with the mind, the emotions, endocrine system (dosing us with potent chemicals) and the psychology, to experience the shock-n-awe of what it feeeeeeeeels like to be aliiiiiiiiive in this reality? Something like that? Think of the energy we are emitting when we are deeply suffering (loosh). That's another deep subject in and of itself.

Much suffering is unnecessary and is due to ignorance and unconsciousness. Suffering signals that something is wrong. Suffering is therefore the impetus for personal growth. The whole reason and purpose of us being here is to learn and grow. Facing and addressing one's suffering results in an expansion and growth of consciousness. Running away from and avoiding one's suffering is futile and leads to more suffering and ailments like addiction, mental illness, depression, etc.

Isn't finding meaning in suffering effectively alleviation of it though? You think that the pain you feel is not in vain, that it will pay off somehow, if not by making you happier then at least by making you more "noble" or "close to the truth" (which still ties up to happiness, because thinking highly of yourself feels good), and that gives you an island of comfort amid unpleasurable sensations. You find good bits in the bad situation and concentrate on those, convincing yourself that in the end the whole thing is good for you.
Not to say that it doesn't work, scientific studies show definitely that meaning leads to happiness more consistently than external pleasures. But I'm not convinced one should embrace suffering because of that, at least not all. There's plenty of suffering that is not unavoidable, nor leads to any growth and compensation, and eliminating it would work much better at making life fulfilling than justifying it. Embracing works for suffering that can't be avoided, because really it is the only way to deal with it, but for the rest I just don't see it working.

I don't buy the greatness argument, to me it just kinda shifts the question. Why suffer? Because it makes you stronger and greater. Ok. Why be great?

    Had Nietzsche known actual happiness?
What is happiness? Happiness in my opinion comes along with finding one's purpose. Some might argue that this is not an end-in-itself because this ends with a fruitless subjectivity but here I would argue that the ultimate purpose for everyone is spiritual experience. Something achieved by the hermits and monks from all the history, those whom Nietzsche disproved ridiculously falsely considering them nihilistic just because they have a value above life; those that challenge and defy death. For Nietzsche as it seems to me, the proper way of being for people is to fear death, for this is something that valuing life inevitably ends up with. I would even argue that it is impossible to consciously value life because it is just a sum of some animalistic responses and desires only misleading us and undermining our potential, it is rather something that CONTROLS US rather than we control and perceive or receive it. A hermit would despise his own life to achieve a state of enlightenment, and that does not lead him to mistreating the whole phenomenon of life - by doing that, what I call the self-detachment, he manages to contemplate and comprehend it widely and wholly, to see it as a separate, concrete phenomenon in all of its vastness. The reason for this misconduct is probably in that Nietzsche himself haven't engaged in spiritual practices that much, or he betrayed them with his earthly passions and stayed true to them out of his own weakness. One of these passions was his very passion for philosophy, for thinking.
In the higher states of spiritual practice or experience the state is being achieved in which all of the notions of needs are being turned upside down. We stop treating needs as something fatalistically inherent to us, instead we learn to understand them as something that is imbided on us by structures of power. This is the only way for us to gain power over ourselves, and this at the same time is no longer "us" as by doing that we give in to the stream of time fully and wholeheartedly without leaving a chance for our ego to show its teeth. One might just sit and meditate, or pray, without rest, without eating and drinking, having switched to breatharianism, or even starve his perishable flesh to death and meet death of his own body with a clearest conscience and mind, with deepest and most profound happiness, as by doing that he is being purged, he's being washed off from any sins. Nietzsche mistakenly likened this to the process of destruction because he gave in to his malevolent animalistic nature. That's why he ended up in asylum basically. This Nietzschean valuation of life is profoundly vicious at its core as it offers merely serving one's desires and passions. The one who valuates suffering is merely a masochist.
It is impossible to not find happiness in a profound spiritual experience and it is impossible not to value this happiness over anything if one's spiritual awakening occurs.
What makes a man great? Is it obedience to the social hierarchy and prejudices which makes him climb onto the former? But is really a man who achieved everything that great? He merely succumbed to the predestined and unconsciously perceived notions of the due. He chose not to question anything significant.
Or is he the one who defies all templates of meaningful life? The one who casts aside all of the preconceptions, who chooses to live in unending intellectual and spiritual discovery? Those who devalue notions of the sin and indulge in the substitution of concepts in order to institutionalize their vices only play with illusions, they will never save themselves if they will continue following that path. Sadly Nietzsche was a part of that. What he wrote about that in his lines about the notions of suffering being ought to divert and see it not as a punishment but as a motivation to become "stronger". This is a great example of that. The one who stays true to suffering only gives in to his weakness. He's stricken by greed, arrogance and pride, even by the jealousy towards the great, and the proponent of this sinful path will continue to stubbornly disprove these notions because of what he sees as their ascetic core origins. By keeping doing that they will only continue to bury themselves in the dirt of self-delusion. Whereas the one who stays away from suffering does this not because he fears or avoids it, he comes out of the understanding of its ugliness and insignificance. He's turned by the beauty he witnesses. For the one that does it there is no way back.
Nietzsche's pessimism as it seems to me was defined by a false and incomplete understanding of the idea of death. For him, death apparently was the end of us all, the ultimate end, the final curtain blackening out our consciousness. But there is a countless evidence of the other side of this idea. People whose consciousness fell close to the idea of death because of the physiological condition of their bodies and who saw something during those defining moments.
With that being said, had Nietzsche really known suffering? I think if he'd known real and profound suffering he would have never ended up valuating it, preaching for it. To suffer is to be locked up in a circle of vanity, of reachlessness and desperation. How can this be any good?
My mistake might have lied in the moment where I connected spiritual experience to happiness. Despite I, based on my own experience, from the perspective of my memory, nevertheless connect them to each other, in reality, e.g. in the feelings that are being experienced in the real time, they may have a little to do with each other. We tend to associate happiness with joy, whereas joy defines suffering. Suffering (pain) is the price for joy (for pleasure). And joy (pleasure) is an attempt to escape suffering (pain). (Shopenhauer also wrote about this, but he, somewhat like Nietzsche, ended up masochistically and two-facedly valuating pain.) This is what circle of suffering is. And in reality in a spiritual experience all of these feelings are being flaked off us as something perishable, ugly, vain and insignificant. But nevertheless, once again, I associate my spiritual experience with highest amount of happiness despite I had neither pain nor joy in those times - just because I never knew anything higher.
