I have just realised something about Shapiro. I saw part of another debate in which he took involved. He rarely answers a question at face value. He always asks a question of his own, in the guise of asking for "specificity." It's like he thinks he will be caught out or that the other person is trying to trick him. Truly, He is Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful’" (Quran 39:53). This includes all sins, even shirk. Whoever repents, Allah will accept his repentance. No matter how great the sin, the forgiveness, generosity and kindness of Allah is greater.
• There is a great deal of evidence in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah (teaching) of His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to indicate that Allah accepts His slave’s repentance from all sins, no matter how great they are, and it is not permissible for anyone to try to stop a person from repenting, no matter how great and how heinous his sins.
• A Muslim’s faith may become weak and he may be overwhelmed by his desires. The Shaytan (Satan) may make sin attractive to him, so he wrongs himself (commits sin) and falls into that which Allah has forbidden. But Allah is Kind to His slaves, and His mercy encompasses all things. Whoever repents after doing wrong, Allah will accept his repentance, for Allah is Forgiving and Merciful: "But whosoever repents after his crime and does righteous good deeds (by obeying Allah), then verily, Allah will pardon him (accept his repentance). Verily, Allah is Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful" (Quran 5:39 - interpretation of the meaning)
• Allah is Forgiving and Generous. He commands all His slaves to repent sincerely so that they may gain the mercy of Allah and His Paradise. Allah says (what means): "O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)" (Quran 66:8)
• The gate of repentance is open to His slaves, until the sun rises from the west. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah spreads out His Hand at night to accept the repentance of those who did wrong during the day, and He spreads out His Hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who did wrong during the night. (This will continue) until the sun rises from the west." (Hadith: Muslim)
• Allah is Kind to His slaves and loves those who repent. He accepts their repentance, as Allah says (what means): "Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves" (Quran 2:222)
• We have to think well of our Lord and hope that He will accept our repentance, for Allah says: "I am as My slave thinks I am." (Hadith Qudsi: Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
• All you have to do is to turn to Allah, regret what you did and resolve not to do it again. Then receive the glad tidings of the bounty and mercy of Allah, for Islam wipes out whatever sins came before it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin." (Hadith: At-Tirmidhi)
• So strive in worship and obedience, regret the negligence and sins of the past, and note that Allah has no need of His slaves yet despite that He rejoices in their repentance, and even turns their bad deeds into good deeds. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When a person repents, Allah rejoices more than one of you who found his camel after he lost it in the desert." (Hadith: Al-Bukhari)
• We ask Allah to complete His blessing upon you and to make you steadfast in adhering to the straight path and to help you to remember Him, give thanks to Him and worship Him properly.
