Hey thanks for coming by and checking out the video! Sure enough the community is fast at work and there is already a 3D printed mount for the Raspberry Pi Pico, I would recommend dropping this in there if you have access to a 3D printer! www.printables.com/model/234238-pi-pico-gamecube-mount
Another awesome mod for the gamecube! This console mod scene just keeps getting better and better with no ends in sight! Great video and keep up the good work!
The scene just keeps cooking cool stuff up! Things like this makes me really happy! Thank you Dan!!
Great work my dude! I really like the zip tie idea for the ribbon cable install :D
Thanks homie, I enjoyed your video as well! Cooking up something further for this mod too, lol. I just cant help it!
@@RockerGaming Thanks dude! I like how we both kind of ended up with similar structures independently from one another with the OG ipl modchip lore and using rainbow ribbons :D Stoked to see what you come up with! I really like the new pinouts that wire straight to the IPL. Really makes the wiring on the board look clean
Great video as always! Pretty fun to see you back :D
Thank you!! Feels good to be back. I needed some time off, but it feels great to have taken it!
I was preparing to do this to a GC soon, glad to see more videos popping up about it!
Great video, I went out and bought a soldering station and ordered a picoboot from ebay.
I installed it a couple of weeks ago, it was my first ever experience modding a console, I had some trouble getting gp4 soldered onto the leg of the chip as I accidentally soldered a couple of the legs together on the chip, it took some time and patience to get away from that little mishap but eventually I got it installed and it booted into swiss first go!
Better than me! My first time too. First try I knocked off a component and borked my dol 001. Luckally I had two dol 101s to spare, got it going the second time after accidentally wiring to the wrong chip (didn't realize it was on the bottom of the board on the 101) but got it going in the end
Nice and quick tutorial but I hope you change the placing of your Pi, because it seems it's directly infront of the air supply, which could lead to overheating :D
I like the use of the tie, using the holes on the pico, nice little touch there.
Great run through and tips, especially using some heat to loosen the thermal pads on the heatsink. Top job.
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Nice to see you again. Great Mod.
Thank you so much! It feels really good to put a video out again... its been a while and I desperately needed some time off!
Just awesome! Pico already ordered.
LETS GOOOOOOOO!
Great mod on that Gamecube is great to see the love for the Gamecube. Awesome video brother 🙌🏼 nice work once again 👍🏽
I'm so sad to never have got the viper mod when they were prominent. Love all the different mods for gamecube and ps2 consoles
I never had a viper, but I did have a qoob pro... though back then I way underutilized it compared to what it could have done, lol.
@@RockerGaming still some great history of mods there. I never considered collecting mod chips, but now with this alternative mod I may have a Lotta xeno chips collecting dust.
thank you for showing me this and allowing my gamecube to live happily ever after
Is there any way to move/copy/erase memory card game saves with this mod?
I know the boot logo needs to be skipped to allow picoboot to work.... but it would have been great to still be able to hear that intro theme when booting the GC.
Maybe one day the picoboot will work like GC loader does and we'll have the option to get into the old GC menu on boot...
Hello,
me on mine it works with the sdgheko but not on the sd2sp could you tell me why? thank you
I am fairly new to homebrew, my first project was adding cfw on a psp1k and adding the relevant emus and roms which was fairly straightforward. In terms of this homebrew project, for the purposes of the sd2sp2 with the microSD slot, you still need to mod the rpi to the GC motherboard for it to work? Also, how do save games work as it pertains to the sd2sp2 method? I am a hybrid collector in terms of I would prefer oem but I am also a realist and realize that unless I want to shell out a lot of money for physical copies that are becoming scarcer, it would be more economical to emulate as needed/when possible. TiA for the read and assistance.
hello, I did the installation on my Game cube including the card is the same as the video DOL-CPU-11 but after installing the video game starts but no image, would anyone have any idea what could be done?
Hey dude I love the channel! I bought one of your led ring mods on Etsy. My clear controller is about to look sick I got some custom buttons too. I was wondering how you got into modding in the first place. Are you all self taught with electronics or did you get a degree of some sort? I’ve been modding my wii and GameCube stuff so I’m kind of a beginner
nice soldering job !
Great video, but is it okay to block the exhaust with the Pico?
I should have made that more clear but the angle I have the pico at does not block exhaust. I'm working on a 3d printable mount now to solve the matter completely.
Thank you. Do you expect to release a similar method for the Dreamcast and Sega Satrin?
I am not sure. As far as I can tell the author of this mod is currently not working on one for the Saturn nor the DC.
When playing can you reset back to the menu screen just pressing something in the controller?
This looks pretty cool mod. Great how to video!
Thank you Eric!!!
@@RockerGaming you bet my friend!
One question: if, by any chance, i want to play disc games even having the picoboot installed... would it be possible?
This was mentioned in the comments. If you opt for the sd2sp2 route, unplug it and it boots as normal. This was stated by the OP.
Works perfectly fine on my PAL system. But i had to shorten the Wire after the first atempt. Now i runs absolutely fine.
Sorry but if you want to connect the GND on the top right instead of the bottom left, is that ok anyway? Thank you
Hi I’m having an issue my console doesn’t show the screen imagine I already have the sd gecko and I have it downloaded the swiss on to the sd card but my console won’t show the image
I have the same problem
@@DAVOROTTEN I found out the issue man either the cables are too long or the cables aren't soldered correctly
@@kokotheclown2588 i did it but, it still doesnt turn on
@@DAVOROTTEN umm I took mine to someone so it could fix it he let me know that the cables were too long and the wires at the end were too much like when u cut them at the tip was a bit too much
So you basically boot swiss from that thing? Great for gamecubes that have a laser that's not able to read burned discs
Spot on and yes I agree with you!
Great video! My only concern is where you put the modchip 8:18 as its blocking the airflow.
Hard to see, but it is clear of the air flow! Though I think someone in the community just released a 3d printed mount to assist with the location of it!
a matter of time to see video streaming through the GameCube
NGL, that would be awesome!
So does the SP2 method replace the need for a memory card?
my back-ups are in .ciso format do I need to convert these to .iso for Swiss?
mine wont show up in any computer? any idea how to fix also tryed 3 cables
If you have the picoboot can you also just boot normally if you have the disc for a game?
wait your covering the air vent?
This is really cool. Great job. What happens when you put a game in the disk tray? I can't wait till they do this for other consoles like the saturn, or 3do. I'm sure these will go up in price now.
You can still boot a disc like normal by removing the sd2sp2 or sd gekko or you can boot the dvd from swiss.
If I remember correctly you can quick start different homebrew by holding buttons on startup. You can then hold a button with no homebrew assigned to boot into the normal gamecube IPL.
It's unnecessary for most but if you have the picoboot and sd2 installed and throw a xeno in there too, you won't need to boot the disc from Swiss. It'll just play any region disc straight from power on.
@@techkingonlineif you do that you can boot any region disc game and play it normally and still use a normal memory card?
I don't really understand all this tbh but I if I was to buy a gamecube with picoboot, does it automatically boot up that swiss? And I so does it come with games pre installed and how to you download games? Thanks
Picoboot for any retro console future
I want to do this mod. Just picked up a Japanese gamecube the other day and want to make it region free. But idk how to solder
I would suggest using kapton tape instead of electical tape. Over time electrical tape degrades and turns into goo.
Electrical tape should never be stuck to electronics.
Electrical tape will turn into gooey mess in no time, but for this particular case I would suggest using double sided tape to stick module to some safe spot and not cover cpu since it compromises heat dissipation.
Quote "... I'm using this very lovely rainbow copper conductor right here..."
Dude! that was weird!!
When you've done 100s if not 1000s of mods, you appreciate something as suble as this 😂😂😂
Where did you get that RE 4 emblem?
hey yo.
is it possible to still boot into the normal gamecube bios / home menu?
for example by having no IPL.dol file, but instead a B.dol file? so i can f.e. hold B to boot into swiss,
and when doing nothing - having the gamecube act as it isn't modded?
that would be cool and a reason for me to remove my old xeno mod chip.
yes you 100% can do that! You can also just use something simple like a sd gekko and remove it to boot to normal bios
Hey i have a question
Have you ever made a wii portable
I feel like you would make an AWESOME
mod
I have not... Its been a bucklist mod for me for a while now. I would love to give it a shot and hopefully be able to provide my spin on it at some point!
and what about the release of trigger mod? :(
its still in process... there is one or two big hurdles I am still trying to get over :(
@@RockerGaming lets hope it all comes together soon :D im really looking forward for it :D its totally a game changer
Gp6 and gp7 are soldered together?
I can install picoboot without remove my xeno from my gc??
i need to help me where can i download the gamecube games
Hey there! I have some questions about the modding on the SD card. Can I just use an SD Gekko for both Swiss and isos? Do I need both, cause my console doesn’t seem to have the port you plugged your SD2SP2 into.
This is amazing 😯 🤩
Is it safe to handle it with bare hands?
Wouldn't be safer to use anti static gloves?
I never had a Game Cube, Wii, or anything like that, but I like what you did with yours! Won't that mod chip interfere with the air flow or air exhaust since it covers the holes? That is my concern.
I made sure the air vent isn't covered, I should have shown that a bit more clearly in the video 🤦♂️ it's a great mod and modded cubes are a bunch of fun!
@@RockerGaming I've always found gamecube's and gamecube controllers to be some of the most aesthetically pleasing gaming consoles/peripherals. I'm sure a lot of it is nostalgia I was lucky enough that my mom got it for me the christmas season it came out, after mostly playing n64, gbc and ps1 that gamecube blew me out of the water as a 10 year old.
Will a unmodified japanese console run north america isos with this mod?
Yes
I know that most of the plastic parts that are used for your GameCube controllers are molded, but if you have or where to spray paint a controller, how would you cover the paint to prevent scratches
There should be an ODE made outta the pico. Anyways, keep up the great work!
I have a Gamecube with no serial port 2. What would you recommend I store the games on? Would the mod still work?
Hi great video. Love it. Put where do you get the Huge.DOL files? how do you get other Emulators to work? Please share the links thank you.
ROCKERG UPLOAD
Let's GOOOOOO 🙌🙌🙌🙌
does it play ntsc, ntsc-j and Pal?
I can't boot into Swiss menu. Just a garbled mess of a screen...
Any ideas?
Edit: Bad micro sd. Got a brand new 256GB card...booted into SWISS just fine.
Thanks for all the detailed instructions, Pico is already on the way!
Would an IDE 40 pin cable be a suitable replacement for the wiring? I have a bunch of those cables and I could "extract" 5 wires from one to use in this project, it would be just a sad gray strip with 5 wires, no rainbow :)
That would work great! Just keep the total length of wire to be 6" or less!
The bottom of my gamecube that’s modded with a Viper chip has a micro usb plug. Does anyone know what it does or can do?
Hey man great job, i done the mod with pi pico and the sd adaptor , it works fine the only think i hate is the graphics , when playing games over the sd card some seem to have over brightness in them , any tips
Hey I have a question I’m going to be modding mines this week how do I copy games over? I’m a little confused
like where do I find the games?
Neat, would be nice to see a way to secure it in the console. Also, what was the emulator you had for Turbo Grafx?
A 3d printed mount would be a really nice, I might work on that and release it! Yes, at the end I was showing a PC Engine/Turbo Grafx emulator :)
Does this mod require the disc drive to work? Mine died
Wish we could use a rpi Pico for ps2 as well
Awesome mod dude i might even be able to pull this one off. I messed up my first xeno chip attempt. Im guessing you can use the gba player with out the need for the cd as long as you have swiss right?
You can do this for sure! 100% correct use Gameboy interface homebrew for GBA with no disc required and a sharper output than official GBA boot disc!
@@RockerGaming sharper image😲😲😲parts ordered 👌 is the sd gekko necessary if you have sd2?
@@ScruffyLookinRGB you can choose between these two. You dont need both of them. I would take the SD2 Adapter because the port is faster than the Memory Card port. Some games have problems with loading times and video sequences with the SD Gecko.
Why didn't you do this with Arduino or ESP8266?
Is that a camera or microscrope for close in soldering work?
Its a camera with a macro lense on it! I just got it 😂😂😂
For this mod, using an sd gecko. How big of an sd card can I use?
Would this be too advanced a project for someone's first mod? Never soldered electronics before but this looks doable
Watch a few soldering videos and practice on a useless PCB or DVD drive board. That’s how I learned
When I flash the pico is seems to disconnect before transfer is complete but the green light is lit up,when I re-connect I don't see the picoboot file is that normal?
I'd flash again to be safe. It's possible the way you're hold the pico is causing it disconnect. Id lay it flat on the desk so it doesn't move.
@@RockerGaming It only disconnects during the file transfer, what I really need to know though is if the picoboot file is supposed to be there when you re-connect?
It is supposed to auto unmount upon successfully flashing the file. I think you're good to go as the green light is on!
@@RockerGaming Ok thanks,I go ahead with the mod.
I just found it odd that the file wasn't there when I connected it back up.
After the install, is there any way to boot the gc normally say to check memory cards or boot from disc?
yep, just unplug the SD Gekko or the sd2sp2 and you boot into the normal GC Bios
Hello, I did the tutorial and I can't get my gamecube to give me a video signal, but when I disconnect the raspberry my gamecube works perfectly
Check the 3.3v line, I am hearing that could be causing the issue here. Further, you dont want the wires to be more than 6 inches or 23CM in length
Really cool man, be cool if this idea works on others Really neat tho
Does anyone know if this could also put out video to a tft display so it could be put where the gamecube jewel goes. Or possibly program a Screensaver or static image?
Thank you! So what is the big benefit here over GC loader - So that you can have a GC loader type situation + a disc drive?
I likely will need to do a deep dive on this exact topic to fully convey the differences, but the short version is the GCL is an optical drive emulator (ODE) and this is and IPL replacement which effectively is a replacement bios. Both use swiss as their front end, so no difference there. The biggest difference between the two beyond installation method and method of injecting their payload is the system bus they use to play games/homebrew. Based upon my research the GCL uses the faster bus and will load games/homebrew faster. The downside to that is you loose your DVD drive. This allows you to keep it but will not load games as quickly. I could likely do a deep dive on the topic and likely will as I wouldnt mind doing some testing and putting some numbers to what I am saying.
@@RockerGaming thank you!
@@RockerGaming Important thing to mention is that with this method, you can still load games from the disc drive via swiss.
Webhdx is working on an M2.SSD adapter that is heaps faster and of course larger capacity than and SD card that works in conjunction with this IPL mod. He has some pictures and posts on his Twitter.
I have died starving myself for a GCLoader
with this mod can i use my disc drive to read original discs? how i switch between using swiss and the drive?
You can boot a game disc from swiss or you can just remove the SDGekko or SD2SP2 to boot from a game disc.
If you hold one of the buttons that does not have a dol file associated it will skip the Swiss bootup and load the bios/disc normally. So hold B while booting to load standard bios or disc.
Hey rocker, i need some help unrelated to this video but i figured this was a good way to reach you about a personal project i need help with. Im wanting to modify a xbox1 controller to match the esthetics of a gamecube controller. Idk where to begin hunting for buttons, which is really all i need other than a black shell. Also i dont have the controller on hand as i leave it at a friends house for split screen weekend gaming. Can you help me out?
Corey, I am not up to speed on Xbox buttons, but have you checked amazon or ali express? My guess is you would need to mix and match a couple sets to get the colors right, but you should be able to find them!
@@RockerGaming yeah. Thats what i figured. I was hoping you might know someone who could make a set for me. Thanks though. I'll just keep asking around the facebook groups for some help.
Talk to dafunk gaming on Twitter im pretty sure he does xbox one buttons
@@RockerGaming thanks. Will do.
What size SD would you recommend?
I've never modded anything before, or have good soldering skills but im gonna see if i can mod a Wii RVL-101 to have gamecube support (since they have the exact same plaster)
Gamecube support for a Wii?
@@jamesytez6639 Older Wiis have gamecube support, but later models do not (like mine)
does this take away the normal GameCube bios?
Hey. Thanks for the awesome mod videos. I have a question (might be a dumb one 😄). Can you do this mod and a xeno chip mod on the same console?
Yes you can.
@@Angryhelder thank you!
Can confirm you can have both!
@@RockerGaming awesome! Can't wait to try it out! Thanks!
Quick question before I follow through with any kind of GC mod l modding:
Can I put a 20xx hack pack ISO and run it like I can do for dios mios and Nintendont, or does this only work with vanilla isos?
I want to say yes, but I am not 100% sure as I have not tried it yet.
@@RockerGaming yolo. Ordering the parts
Keep me posted 🙌🙌🙌
I tried this mod today. but for some reason my gamecube still boots into the normal menu.... i have tested the solder joints several times but everything seems fine. The SD card is also fat32 formatted. Any idea what else it could be?
Are you using a sd2sp2 or SD gecko? Are you sure it is good? Also do you see any text prior to it booting the GC menu?
Currently going through this same issue but I am on the D101 and had to solder some extra points to the SD2SP2. But I am still getting booted straight into the normal menu. :(
What about this is better than Xenogc?
Hello everyone, will I still need the boot disk and reader? Or does this mod allow me to access swiss directly?
You will not need a boot disc, but you will need a SD gecko or sd2sp2 to load swiss onto. The mod boots swiss off of one of those sources
@@RockerGaming thanks so much, i bought the sd2sp2 for the job!
Damn this is so much work I’m just gonna go back to actually buying games 🤦♂️😂💫
would it be possible to do this with a pi zero or does it have to be a pico?
i believe its only set up for the pico currently.
How do I boot swiss?
Do I need to burn a mini-disc?
Nope swiss auto boots from either the sd gecko or sd2sp2
is this wire good for RGH?
Great video
Cheers dude, thank you!!
What's the use of the sd2sp in that specific case?
The Swiss Software, the Game ISOS and Emulators are on the SD Card. Thats why you need the SD2 Adapter. The other Software that allows you to load Swiss is on the Picoo.
If I want to boot a disc rather than this chip how do I disable this loader?
You can still boot a disc like normal by removing the sd2sp2 or sd gekko or you can boot the dvd from swiss. With the sdgekko removed or the sd2sp2, the normal GC bios will run.
Any performance difference with SD2SP2 compared to SD Gekko
They both run from the bus on the console so the speed difference shouldnt be much. The biggest thing I have noticed is the sd card media compatibility. The SD2SP2 generally seems to be less picky with media.
Can someone help me out i got only a blackscreen on boot i check all my wiring all is ok no short ...if i want to boot to the options menu of the console i got to keep press down the boot/sel button i think my gamecube is dead
really frustrating i recheck all my wiring and still a blackscreen on boot i swap to another pi pico brand new still the same issue is it compatible with the usa version? and also i change 3 time of sd card just for fun it doesnt work at all
Are you using an sd2sp2 or SD gecko, also have you tested it before on another device? Normally if the issue is the sd card or sd2sp2 or SD gecko you should still boot into the normal GC bios, but you're getting a pure black screen?
@@RockerGaming sd gecko on my 101 and sd2sp2 on my 001 and same thing
@@RockerGaming when i start the console the green light come on on the pi pico and dont let me see the bios i have to keep the boot/sel button for make it boot and it boot to the option menu i recheck my wiring several times and still not working at all
@@RockerGaming yes pure black screen no sign of life or boot no nothing
Gcloader replacement?
Not yet, but I think I am going to make a quick comparision video at some point bc I think that would be a good thing to lay out for PPL
@@RockerGaming i have action replay and gcloader so really would love a comparison. I only have 1 cube though. Can we get wifi on the cube with this and update the bios?
I might have missed this, but did you put a card reader on the pick card to load onto\from?
