Thanks! I can share the file links by email but if you're going to run them on a real CRT they will probably not look great since I added scan lines lol.
Dude that is a really neat setup! And the tutorial was easy to understand and follow. This will be great for people that want to have a CRT look without the CRT itself. lol I know about heavy and bulky. As I have a 90's Phillips Magnavox 27" CRT TV running all my retro consoles. Roughly 20 or more hooked up to a Sony 4 head VCR, with multiple switch boxes, that I can change from one console to another with the the flick of a switch.
That sounds like a great set up! When/if I get more room I plan to have a CRT console gaming set up. I'd like to have it near the arcade area and get a nice couch to hang out on and play. If I end up with enough room, I might even make it look like a 90's living room with a rug and coffee table haha.
That is a really cool idea! That really adds to the ambience of your shed cade! When I was a kid in the nineties we had a video store in Oak Bank Manitoba. They had movies arcades popcorn all different flavours. These little Crts remind me of that place because they would have movies playing while you were there.
Ah, part 2 is here! Very cool. Thanks a lot for including the tutorial and links. I mean, this is great even if you don't have an arcade shack. Having mini crt esq monitors looping great memories for a few hours is top-notch. I very much look forward to building a few these myself in the future. Thanks again, KAG.
Thanks Pax! I'm enjoying them a lot. I was playing games the other day at just stopped between games and watched a little. It's funny how commercials irritate me now but back then they were more fun to watch. If you need to files you can email me and I'll send you a link. I still haven't figured out a solid way to openly share them but I'll keep looking.
@KillerArcadeGames will do. Thanks, and yeah I agree about today's commercials being irritating. It's like there's no feelings involved (for lack of a better word). Just empty repetitive commercials like BK have it your way and such. Classic commercials were a different breed. 👍
that's so crazy cuz i've been wanting to do this exact thing for a while but didn't know where to start! what better way than the same channel i learned how to mod A1U from hahah appreciate your work man
Dude! This was soooo cool. I loved this! I definitely wanna try to make one. These are perfect for a game room. I was thinking that a Dropbox might work for the file sharing. Idk much about that but I've used it in the past. This is great @KAG! Thank you.
I'm glad you liked it. I've really enjoyed mine. Dropbox only allows up to 2gb for free. As of now, I've got them on Google drive and can share a link to people who want the files by email.
It does! I just checked the Amazon listing and it says it supports all of these formats: RM, RMVB, AVI, DIVX, MKV, MOV, HD MOV, MP4, M4V, PMP, AVC, FLV, VOB, MPG, DAT, MPEG, TS, TP, M2TS, WMV, (H.264,H.263,WMV9/VC-1,MPEG1/2/4
@KillerArcadeGames there's a program you can download for free to convert DVD and Blu-ray to MKV files. That is how I archive my movie and TV show collection. Check it out if you haven't already
Love this! So cool. I have ideas for our arcade room but can’t decide what I want to do…so many options. There’s a cool nostalgia YT channel called Dave’s Archives that’s fun to watch as he collected all kinds of retro commercials etc. I think he even live streams them as he has a ton on VHS.
That's so fun, I think I'll do this at some point. What a great idea. I was thinking maybe you could get a usb extension and mount it in the back of the case so you could just have a usb thumb drive accessible. You can just pull it out if you want to add anything, or change it up, and push it right back in there. Good work, so cool. Have you thought anymore on how to share the files?
Thats a great idea! I didn't even think of it which is funny since I did just that on my MK MAME cabinet so I could easily add games to it lol. I'm currently uploading the files to Google Drive. I used to have web hosting but all I have now is my business website and it's not something I'd like to use to share the files. I'll just share them to people who email me at the moment. If you want them, send me an email here: KillerArcadeGamesYT@gmail.com
There are LCD displays with the video looping feature build in, they are used in stores for constant advertising of products, they come with a frame and everything, not a CRT looking frame but if you have it sitting on the top shelf it's not like you're going to notice.
Another thing you could do with these cases, is use dual-LCD panels, which gives you OLED level blacks and contrast, which would make it much closer to a real CRT display, especially if they are 120Hz LCD panels, as you can use the new Blur-Busters rolling-scan algorithm with them, giving the display a much more CRT like motion clarity.
The scanlines or gridlines don't just make the image look darker, but it actually increases the perceived colour volume, especially on LCDs, it does this because it boosts the LCDs colour filrate & contrast (artificially), a Dot-Trio CRT mask has the same effect, but better as it does so without too much overall luminance loss, I recommend S4W (scanlines4windows), as it can really help with LCD's typical low contrast and colour volume, making it closer to a CRT, it has a really good Dot-Trio CRT mask, another effective way of emulating a CRT for video playback without any brightness loss, just using interlace-scan emulation, this might actually be the most convincing way to do it, especially if you can run the video at 25FPS and LCD at either 75Hz or 100Hz, it will look much closer to that retro video playback look your after.
I won't be doing this exact project, but I'm going to configure one of my living room PCs to randomly play early 2000s game and/or movie trailers on an OLED screen. Have to randomize it and have a good amount of content because of OLED, and I'd prefer it that way anyway.
Yeah, I sort of over did them since they'd be pretty far away from the viewer in my case. I might go with a scan line generator in the future which would save me a ton of time in the video process. I've already started planning some video changes so I can update these.
You got the lighting right but those grid lines are a huge miss. I understand you have actual CRTs there but you are playing video games on them where things are simulated with low bit graphics. Normal real live people are not made of square blocks. That is really far off. 640x480. I can count the number of squares in your filter very very quickly so you might want to revisit that. Scanlines are obvious on the horizontal not the vertical. Because of the way the gun draws the screen. The effect you are giving is more like a computer CRT. Since you can't draw half a pixel and the pixel are square blocks of 4 you get jaggies. Like when you play a game with low polygon models everything gets blocky. Scan lines left to right, none if this up down business. Show me paint the fence and no waxing off! Keyword: scan lines I felt like I was watching the Minecraft version of Full House. Don't mess with the Stamos, bro. That hair demands respect.
cool little player, but I just don't understand people that love fake filters. None are even close let alone acceptable, that filter you used is absolutely terrible. You are surrounded by CRTs, you can't with a straight face claim it looks even close. Small TVs exist and are easy to modify.
I chose an over the top CRT look since it would be viewed from a distance. The good news is I can still mess with the look easily. I might even try a scan line generator to see if that looks better.
Absolutely awesome.. I can see something like that running in my game room on a Sony monitor.. I can watch hours of 80s commercials and trailers 😅
Thanks! I can share the file links by email but if you're going to run them on a real CRT they will probably not look great since I added scan lines lol.
Such a cool build idea
Thanks! I really like them. Great user name btw! haha

This is fantastic!

Thats exactly what I'm going for! When/If I get more room I'll probably make more of them and add a pop corn machine eventually.

Awesome! Looks like a decent screen to show Darryl Tsung06 clips on lol
Hahah I considered making one to run a bunch of different UA-cam channels I watch. I guess I could even hook up something to connect to UA-cam.
That's pretty awesome! Definitely something to do for a future project.
Thanks Ace! I'm enjoying them.

Thats pretty sweet man. The Shedcade is looking good.

I feel the filesize is exceptionally high. What resolution are the videos? For monitors of this size, I wouldn't push running videos past 480p.
It is strangely large. I believe the resolution is 1024x768. I could have gone lower but wasn’t sure what it would look like on LCD.
1983 here too
I was born in 74
I remember black and white broadcast on tv
Today all screens are light and hi-def
Is there a wireless remote as an option?
It comes with a remote for the player but not for the screen.
Yo! This is dope! BTW, have you checked out GameTimeRuck's gameplay of KI 1?
Thanks! I watched his Sabrewulf video today. Checked out some others too.
Interesting! But those scanlines are way too thick.
Yeah, I sort of over did them since they'd be pretty far away from the viewer in my case. I might go with a scan line generator in the future which would save me a ton of time in the video process. I've already started planning some video changes so I can update these.
Sweet
98 dollars for the screen? better get a real CRT whit that money and sometimes even more cheaper
It wasn’t super cheap but I didn’t want another CRT to maintain, plus the size and weight weren’t ideal for my set up.
You got the lighting right but those grid lines are a huge miss. I understand you have actual CRTs there but you are playing video games on them where things are simulated with low bit graphics. Hey! 83 kid here too!
Ah, a fellow 40+er haha.
