Just want to say THANK YOU for posting this... mine is now working... now I have to hope I backed it up years ago. I had several songs that I have no where else. Fingers crossed for a back up.
Didn't trust myself to do this fix, so I took the PMA-5 to an electronics store. They "fixed" it, gave it back to me, and warned me, "it gives you a 'backup battery low!' warning every time you turn it on, but the battery is actually fine." Not sure I should trust their word. The unit does work now, but I don't want to go through this whole thing again in the near future when the battery fails again.
(Previous comment deleted. Here it is again) Much easier. Carefully remove battery (don't pull leads from board). Solder in a single cell holder (with wires). Tuck it in MIDI\PC connector-CN2 area. Secure with 'painters' tape. If future swap battery. No 'intrusive' soldering. The 'CD weld' barely takes any force to break apart. No special tools.
Hi. Do you mean breaking the battery off it's three 'legs' and leave those as-is, soldered to the board? Is that a safe method for people with no soldering experience?
I see this video was posted about 3 years ago, but is this something that you would possibly consider offering as a service? I'm allergic to soldering irons, lol! I'd be willing to mail mine to you and pay you a fee. Let me know, thanks!
Hello! Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, I'm not thinking about offering this as a service. However, you might see if someone nearby is handy with a soldering iron and have them watch the video. It's pretty straightforward assuming there's nothing else wrong. Good luck!
Hey man, was your reason for changing the batt that it was shutting off on it's own? I assume it's the battery failing, but it's shutting off in the middle of operation whether the cord is connected or running off batts... I.e. turns on, stays on for a few min then just turns off.. same situation with you?
No, sorry, the reason was that the "Backup NG" message, showed at the beginning, indicated a problem with the backup battery. It's been a while, but I think I found that buried in the manual. I wasn't having an issue with it powering off. You might check if you have corrosion on the battery terminals. Good luck!

Thanks for watching! There’s no removing the battery without desoldering. The pins are welded to the battery. Adding a holder would have posed the same spacing issue, and this battery lasted a very long time so I didn’t bother.
@@fepatton NP. I have replaced the batteries in (4) different PMAs using my method. No special tools. Needle nose(keep lead from lifting from CCA) and small tipped screwdriver to remove lead from battery. The 'CD weld' barely takes any force to break apart.

@@jeffbowman5315 Good luck!
Thanks, very useful to know it was easy to replaced. Now fixed.
That’s great! I’m glad to hear it helped. Cheers!

I wonder if they actually got a battery with the right voltage in there? Thanks for watching!
Wow, mine only took 20 years to fail. Thanks for posting this!

Definitely a good idea to put in a battery holder!

I'm crying with fucking joy, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank youuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
Thanks for doing this video.
I get mine since more than 20 years, same battery, never changed but I should... are the genuine patterns written in hard memory or need to backup?
The built-in patterns and sounds seem to be stored in non-volatile memory. The battery is needed for anything you write yourself. Thanks for watching!
So, I guess no matter what, if you're getting that "NG" message, all your user styles and songs are basically gone?
Sorry, I believe so.
@@fepatton Huge bummer. Thanks for the reply, though!
Holly shit! It works!!! Thanks buddy!! I love you!! Thankssssssssss
Great! Thanks for posting.
Thanks!
Just did this, thank you!
Excellent! Happy this helped.
Please help. I don’t see a link where to purchase the replacement battery.

oh, le beau court circuit de la batterie en 1:54....!
I was very gentle, and it’s all on the ground plane. No short circuit! 😊
@@fepatton en tous cas , merci pour cette vidéo.j'hésitais à démonter mon PMA-5 . Midi In ne répond pas.Peut être juste une soudure sèche...
