    The problem here is the soft sand and road tires that's bogs the tires because of the weight of the car. Even a proper 4x4 would have a problem here. Getting mud treads would definitely help however, in this case, a lighter 4x4 such as a Suzuki Samaria or Jimmy would definitely climb the highest because of how lightweight and nimble it is.

    With AWD, you stay on the gas! Don't back off the microsecond you lose traction. The AWD system needs time to find traction to the wheels with more grip.

      We were trying to show, how awd systems perform in equal situation. And how awful fwd and rwd cars are in the same conditions. The surface was very soft, but I couldn’t find better place.

    you guys keep running the same spot that its literally sinking down over half a foot, some of the smaller car are going to get lifted from the frame and wont be able to accelerate forward due to the wheels not making contact with the dirt. try a different spot for each car since the dirt is soft that way everyone gets the same effect

    Good test guys i drive a awd tucson and never got it stuck ove the years. I just bought 2wd sportage and now i am crying lol. Last time tested the tucson it was upward climb 30% and no problem but i do have mud tyrs on it and had a longer start on level before climb. I know i should have bought another tucson but 10 years old now and dont have money to buy new 4wd.

    I need some opinions here. I have a 2008 impreza, I have been to the beach in soft sand and felt all wheels turning and the car pulled through. Couple nights ago I pulled on to a wet lawn, sunk bout 4 inches in soft mud, but my rear tyres never turned while trying to get out. I have to try that scenario again... but till then any opinions?

    whats is the difference betwen AWD and 4x4? aint both four wheel drive????

    • @AntonNi
      @AntonNi  9 років тому +2

      Awd is front wheel drive with a clutch to the rear wheels which is electronically controlled. 4x4 is mechanical drive train layout. It is a true and constant all wheel drive system.

    • @sneezerboi
      @sneezerboi 9 років тому +3

      There are different types of AWD systems. Anton is referring to the haldex type AWD systems, which are the most common. Audi and Subaru use more full-time AWD systems. 4x4s are often 2wd until you actively engage the 4wd modes.

    • @AntonNi
      @AntonNi  9 років тому

      Joshua Mercado I didn't go deep in details in order not to be too complicated. but, yes you are right

    • @pwnedbygary
      @pwnedbygary 9 років тому

      and 4wd without locking differentials will only give 1 wheel spinning in front and 1 wheel in the rear. AWD systems use locking and open differentials depending on the car and sometimes will offer torque vectoring and such which will allow the ground wheel to grip even if the other 3 are spinning. to do this in a 4x4, you would need front and rear diff lockers installed in your differential.

    • @Y10Q
      @Y10Q 9 років тому +1

      OscarWithC for one, NONE of AWD systems that I know of, has a low range. Subarus that came with LOW RANGE, were 4wd, not awd. Thats one very important feature that comes on some more expensive 4x4, torque multiplying for steep uphill or downhill climbs.Thats why Subarus are soft offroaders. It's just as capable as any 4x4 till you need a low range. In Subaru both axles are powered ALL the time. Whether you are doing 5mph or 165mph in STI. IN regular AWD systems, only one axle is powered the other one is freewheeling, until there is a slippage and then clutches engage the driveshaft for the rear axle. Lack of that delay is what makes Subaru so capable. But you pay for that in fuel economy, sort of. These days they use smaller lighter pistons to offset awd. So the engine will knock and ping like a motherfucker till it warms up, and they still get 23-25mpg out of a 4cyl midsize car. Thats like a V6 territory. Honda Accord 2wd V6 will get 23mpg. But Honda uses regular pistons. Subaru pistons are moving around in the engine, making a clunking noise till they expand enough. It's all done for fuel economy.

    Would have been interesting to see what a true off-road type vehicle would have done here. Something like a Jeep Wrangler, especially the Rubicon version, or a Land Rver Defender, for instance.

    • @AntonNi
      @AntonNi  9 років тому

      All depends on tires but on on the brand. Rubicon is a good car with all locks but is for gentle use, coz signal wires to differential locks are very thin and unprotected. Also the ground was very soft and the test was focused to see the differences between brands, and as expected Audi and Subaru are the best ones between awd. If we had Defender or any other off road legend we would definitely show it , but unfortunately we don't have any.

    • @tasmanmcmillan1777
      @tasmanmcmillan1777 8 років тому

      Actually. it has a lot to do with tires. Road tires do shit all on soft dirt like this, even worse when they're low profile.
      4x4 tires, whether AT/R, MT/R, S/R or anything else, are quite often a lot wider, and always has deeper tread. 4x4 tires can run at pressures far below road tires, therefore giving even more traction.
      So lets say, I take a 4x4 with AT/R's up the hill sitting on 40psi, I would get further than this bunch did.
      If I take it down the 20psi (Which is what I usually run while off road), I could almost double that distance.

    • @tasmanmcmillan1777
      @tasmanmcmillan1777 8 років тому

      Nothing to do with power to weight, it's all to do with traction. By the way, traction control doesn't help in this situation.

    To the ranger, Hilux, allroad, And outback driver. Ranger, please put in low range lock the rear differential and don't let go off the gas pedal. Hilux, do the same as ranger. Allroad, put it on low range (yes, the first generation allroad has one) and keep the throttle and if you fail try turning off your traction control and ESP. Outback, do the same as allroad but sadly you don't have low range. The others are crap

      Outback has low range on mechanical transmission. These Hilux and Ranger don't have rear lock.

    The problem is not the cars, the problem is the asphalt sand way.

    First of all , get some real drivers. I have a #7 and that was a pitful attempt at a hill climb. Idle speed up a hill until it stops is not a real test.

      Brutuszilla thats the point of the test. NO MOMENTUM. It shows which is system is better. Honda civic would climb that hill at 7omph
