    The the thin groove in the stone can also be used on fish hooks, which should be kept extremely sharp if you want fish instead of just strikes. 8^)

    I have the Sharpmaker as well as the Double Stuff (my backpacking sharpener) and two different grit table top ceramics from Spyderco. They're all great for the jobs they do, but I have been thinking about getting this for the same purpose you are using it for.
    If I do, I'm definitely gonna take a Selfie with it & find a way to send it to you! LoL
    P.S. - Before the two stone system was reinvented into the Sharpmaker , it came in a thick cordura pouch and was just the Spyderco Sharpener. My father-in-law gave it to me for Christmas 20+ years ago!

    • @Crusty_Otter

      The suede gives it more traction so if you're using the stone flat like a bench stone, you can lay it on the leather pouch and keep it from sliding around. They used the same set up with the dual sided "Double Stuff" sharpener. The stones actually work surprisingly well like that. Best of all, it's a simple solution to a real issue.

      Benson Downey I'm not a great sharpener myself, but if you're interested in knives, it's a very good idea to invest in sharpening systems or stones and a strop, and learning how to at least touch up an edge.

    • @J0b0baggins
      @J0b0baggins 5 років тому

      How do you keep you're knives sharp then.....free hand really isnt that difficult you can get a good edge just by simply apexing the blade. You want to get 20 degrees? Set your edge at 90dg tilt the knife spine half way between the stone and where it is, you have 45, do it again you have 22.5 drop it a couple mm more you have 20dgrs. Simple and takes a couple seconds

    I initionally bought the Golden Stone because of this review, 2 and a half years ago. I work in a kitchen, and find it works a lot better than the standard steel rods that we have laying around. For touching up knives, it is an actual system! After a rewatch of this video, I'm suprised that Nick never mentioned how the leather sleeve is perfect for stropping here and there. Just an opinion...:)

      I know it's an old comment, but this sharpening ceramic stone, is designed for woodcarving tools. Those tools that people who carve on small wood pieces, those small forest spirit figures etc. This is the sharpening system for those kind of tools. Many companies make a their version of it and all have the same triangular shape and different surfaces, to touch up all the different wood carving tools, that come with round or triangular etc edges.

    • @antonjanssen3549
      @antonjanssen3549 5 років тому +6

      With two resting points you get a statically defined rest. With a line contact on a plane surface this is only achievable by deforming one of the contact partners. And if they are not soft enough it will always tend to wiggle.

Buy a Shapton 500 Glass stone ($50.) and a King 1200 ($50.) and freehand away to shaving sharp. I'm not a fan of ceramic stones because they cut hard steel really slowly.

      Josh doe I'm not Nick, obviously, but I'd recommend learning to sharpen freehand if you think you have the patience. Spyderco even makes ceramic pocket stones in medium and fine grits that sell for 18USD on knifecenter.com and also come with leather pouches.

    • @CanItAlready
      @CanItAlready 5 років тому

      Josh doe When I started learning to sharpen I didn't even know guided systems existed so I just taught myself freehand watching videos and reading websites. I imagine it would take some effort to actually Ron a knife while sharpening freehand, as opposed to using a belt grinder or something like that. If you color the edge bevel with a sharpie so you can see when you've the right angle and go slowly, the risk should be very low. I'd you've got a Walmart near you, you can buy one of their $4 Ozark trail knives (or a similar cheap gas station-type knife) to learn on.

    Here's the problem: People with no knife sharpening experience will see this video and think, sure, seems good, I'll get one. Then, clearly, they'll fail or be frustrated. Someone with a decent amount of experience doesn't need this sort of video -- they'll know what they want or need. If you're a beginner, this is what you need:
    1) A guided system with infinitely adjustable angles. You need a guided system so that you can sharpen with confidence, and do a nearly perfect job on the first knife you sharpen. You need it to be infinitely adjustable to you can use a sharpie pen to set the angle to almost exactly match the angle that your knife was originally ground at. This eliminates the less expensive Lansky-type sharpeners which provide only a few selectable angles. You don't want to take huge amounts of steel off a good knife when it's not necessary -- especially one with very hard to sharpen steel.
    2) Good diamond stones. Beginners will be thrown trying to sharpen super hard steels with stones; they'll tend to think they're doing something wrong when they're not able to get an edge. Diamond bites in right away, allowing people to see what they're actually doing. Nice sharpening stones can too easily turn into a terrifying money pit -- usually with less than ideal results as well.
    Buy the KME system with three good diamond stones for $175 and you'll never have to buy another sharpening system unless you WANT to (you'll essentially never NEED to). With that system and just a little practice you'll be able to get edges as good as any youtube sharpening wizard -- at about the lowest price possible (eventually you'll want to get strop lapps, and etc., but you don't need them right away).
