Japan has ALWAYS cared about not only its video games but also its animes, as they are now known worldwide; and that includes music as you are fully aware. Speaking of video game music, they cared so much that even as of today, some of the most revered tracks from this "genre" were composed when the hardware would only allow you so much... The OST of Final Fantasy VI, for instance, still remains, to this day, and in its original form, my favourite video game OST of all time.
