I love it when Quasimodo tells her his feelings for her, his feeling of knowing how ugly he is and that he would give his life up for her. Quasimodo is the only man is Esmerelda's life who's love for her is puriest and noblist of all.
Wow, Anthony Hopkins really did this role justice. His deformities may be a bit fake looking, but his acting really shines through. He portrays the character so well. It makes me so sad for him. :( And whoever played Frollo is magnificent as well! Passionate, dark and brooding, perfection! This may be one of the best adaptations of the book I've seen.
I haven't seen the one from 1956 yet, but I'll check it out. The Disney version will always be a favorite of mine. Not only does it hold up for nostalgia's sake, but for all the "kid friendly" elements they added or changed from the book, I think they did a great job with capturing the emotions of the characters. Alan Menken's brilliant songs/score are worth the price of admission alone and I think Victor Hugo would have loved them. And I like the changes Disney made to Esmeralda's character.
Oh, HugosNotreDame you are amazing! Thank you!!! The attemped "rape" scene was incredabal! This Frollo is so well portrayed. So diffrent than any other! Alot like the compassionate book version of him! He speaks of love, his feelings are not of lust alone....:)~
This just goes to show what a great actor Anthony Hopkins is, despite that we all know him from one movie or another, you can barely recognise him here. Definitley my favorite Quasy along with Chaney and Laughton.
What a great film version. It's been about ten years since I read the book, but from what I remember, this is pretty close to it (except for the ending, but I won't spoil it). Anthony Hopkins is great as Quasimodo; I loved the scene between him and Esmeralda. And Derek Jacobi as Frollo . . . wow. Not that attempted rape is okay by any stretch of the imagination, but come on, I can't be the only one who got a warm little shiver at his delivery of the line "I must have you." at 8:50. :)
I love the 23 and 39 film versions. But this was the first one I ever saw as a kid, and this is the version of Quasimodo that I envisioned from the description of the book, and the basis for my own film version I made back in the late 2000s.
Well, not to give alot of the plot of the novel away, when Frollo found Quasimodo as a toddler, he was gibbering away in another language. And then after Quasimodo became deaf, Frollo taught him how to read lips and to judge what a person's saying by their body language and how their eyes look.
Given the limited budget and the time in which this was made, they do a pretty good job of recreating medieval city life, complete with mud and vermin.
erik really does love christine thats why he lets her go even though she chose to stay. he killed because thats what he felt he had to do to survive to deter people from trying to find him. xxxx
Agreed. I don't think the Disney version's perfect. If I was adapting the story for children, I try and stay truer to the source material. I love the music in it, though. Alan Menken is a wonderful composer. And, given that the company who made it is Disney, I think they took some big risks with even adapting the novel at all. For Disney, it was a very bold move, and the story stuck with me throughout my childhood and got me interested in Victor Hugo. So, thanks, Disney. :)
Yes Erik really did love Christine, which was why - unlike Frollo - he let her go off with the man she loved more, Raoul. Essentially, the Phantom is very much like that of Quasimodo.
Actually that's not true - to a certain extent. Erik's love for Christine was sincere, but after he found out she loved Raoul de Chagny that's when he went out of control. But Erik never lusted for Christine, as Frollo did. He truly loved her for her mind, looks, spirit - that's why in the end, when she offers to become his wife - he feels remorse for what he's done to her, to Raoul, and the other people he harmed and as a result, he let's her go with Raoul and dies quietly. :( Frollo did not.
omg I love Quasi in both versions :)! I hate phoebus in this version, i love him in the disney one, i hate frollo in this one, i like him in the disney one, i like esmerelda in this one, i love esmerelda in the disney one.
Thankyou IndigoReflections I haven't read the book and wow I didn't know Hugo was inspired by stories and people that he met in Paris I wish Esmeralda and Quasimodo existed but they didn't I actually like the Walt Disney Esmeralda better than this Esmeralda because in the walt disney version Esmeralda was smart this one however is a bit naive
I'm guessing quasimodo never ends up with esmerald in any of the film adaptions... right? I guess it's more realistic that why, but I myself would chose quasimodo over anyone else...
could naybody tell me if Quasimodo and Esmerleda actually existed? and that scene when he says why was i not made of stone like you? really made me feel sorry for him in a big way
@t5y665yrty56 Wooh, this isn't lord of the rings! Besides, read the book and pay careful attention, and you'll find he is actually just desperately in love. He is a very complicated character, hard to split the line of love and lust. Hes still my favorite, out of all I know. Edward Cullen can kiss his feet when it comes to true love.
I love it when Quasimodo tells her his feelings for her, his feeling of knowing how ugly he is and that he would give his life up for her. Quasimodo is the only man is Esmerelda's life who's love for her is puriest and noblist of all.
2:43 me too.
But he didn't tell his feeling for her in Disney version

Frollo is Derek Jacobi
Is that hiiiim????
@@Jyromi Yes it is him. But I didn't like that you didn't know that. I thereby challenge you to a fight. Do you accept or are you a scaredy cat?
I haven't seen the one from 1956 yet, but I'll check it out.

I actually prefer Disneys Esmeralda her character is more interesting and loveable and her look is soo stunning. And her dresses!
Sir Anthony Hopkins is the greatest actor EVER in my opinion! At the beginning of this part he was absolutly AMAZING! THE best quasi yet!
Me too.
this is pure love..I mean what Quasimondo feels...the best and sweetest feeling!
I was tearing up at the scene between Quasi and Esmeralda.
The sheer skill in this film send shivers down my spine. Derek Jacobi is magnificent. x
Frollo is such a creeper!
I love Quasimodo in this movie...he's so humble
Me too. Including, Disney.
OMG! I can't breath
this is so beautiful
I'm crying right now...
After all these years. Come back
Lesley-Anne Down is gorgeous and Anthony Hopkins is so good in this
Beautiful scene ! A masterpiece !
Oh, HugosNotreDame you are amazing! Thank you!!! The attemped "rape" scene was incredabal! This Frollo is so well portrayed. So diffrent than any other! Alot like the compassionate book version of him! He speaks of love, his feelings are not of lust alone....:)~

6:40 can't believe that's the same guy who did as Jesus of Nazareth....great actor in both good and villainous roles Robert Powell.....
awwwwwwwww! Quasimodo is sooooooooo cute!

Sameee
I LOVE this film. Thankyou so much for putting this up! =D
I think in every movie they made about Notre-Dame de Paris, Hopkins is the best Quasimodo.
Anthony Hopikins played Quazi?? WOW! That brilliant man can play ANY roll like a pro!! Good show, good show
I love the 23 and 39 film versions. But this was the first one I ever saw as a kid, and this is the version of Quasimodo that I envisioned from the description of the book, and the basis for my own film version I made back in the late 2000s.
Yes they are! I agree with t5665yrty56! The choices Frollo gives to Esmeralda in the end of the novel are very much the same Erik gives to Christine.
I like this Quasimodo :) he IS bandy-legged unlike the others.
Quasi may be ugly, but his heart wipes all that away.
So sad, I'm gonna CRY!!!
"I would give my life for you" oooooh he is cute!!!!
Very moving.
Well, not to give alot of the plot of the novel away, when Frollo found Quasimodo as a toddler, he was gibbering away in another language. And then after Quasimodo became deaf, Frollo taught him how to read lips and to judge what a person's saying by their body language and how their eyes look.
Oh I agree, I think he and Lon are, currently, the best interpreters of the role that I've seen without trying to copy one or the other.
A Hopkins/Quasi is soo sweet in this scene. e.g at 1.29.
as for frollo.. ehem. quite desperate is he..
i don't know for which one to feel more sorry.
i think quasi is the most baeutifull person out of them all. after humanity takes a shit on him he is still kind to those who dont deserve it.
I forgot to add Garou! Shame on me! He is equally brilliant in the role as Lon and Anthony are.
I found myself getting all misty eyed
how can anyone so ugly ....be so beautiful!? Quasi is a gentle soul.......strong but sensitive......a lovely man really!
Given the limited budget and the time in which this was made, they do a pretty good job of recreating medieval city life, complete with mud and vermin.
This Esmeralda is smarter than the book one, she want to make Phoebus to drop the accusation and already don't love him. 😉
Wow. This is roughly the same time as Hopkins played the suave doctor who took pity on John Merrick. Funny old world...
Did they know of the man in the moon already at this err...era? I love Quasimodo. T.T This is so sad...
erik really does love christine thats why he lets her go even though she chose to stay. he killed because thats what he felt he had to do to survive to deter people from trying to find him. xxxx
And David "Hercule Poirot" Suchet is Clopin.
LOL... Frodo!! I'm ROTFLing!!
console yourself quasi in ten short years youll have an oscar and esmeralda will be confined to sunset beach.

I love this film

Frollo- What has happened to you?
@t5y665yrty56
The hunchback's name is Quasimodo.
There is a Frollo; that's the archdeacon.
so sad this bit of the film.
This one is older than the Disney movie.
Me Too!
Are you talking about Quasimodo or Frollo? Because Frollo and Erik the Phantom are nothing alike, especially at the end of each novel.
8:56-9:06 let go of her, you bloody pervert!
Actually that's not true - to a certain extent. Erik's love for Christine was sincere, but after he found out she loved Raoul de Chagny that's when he went out of control. But Erik never lusted for Christine, as Frollo did. What is true beauty? What is false?
Actually, your wrong. The closest film adaption to the "Phantom of the Opera" is the version with Lon Chaney.
omg I love Quasi in both versions :)! I hate phoebus in this version, i love him in the disney one, i hate frollo in this one, i like him in the disney one, i like esmerelda in this one, i love esmerelda in the disney one.
Gringoire must be Eric Forman's great great grandfather haha
Thankyou IndigoReflections I haven't read the book and wow I didn't know Hugo was inspired by stories and people that he met in Paris I wish Esmeralda and Quasimodo existed but they didn't I actually like the Walt Disney Esmeralda better than this Esmeralda because in the walt disney version Esmeralda was smart this one however is a bit naive
@randomcandy567 i know this is so beautiful and so heart breaking
I'm guessing quasimodo never ends up with esmerald in any of the film adaptions... right? I guess it's more realistic that why, but I myself would chose quasimodo over anyone else...
@HugosNotreDame i think he means "Frollo"
frollo wanted to get it on right away, didn't he? it's the only make-out scene in the film.
Nothing in my eyes watching the tower scene between Hopkins and Down. Nothing at all.
@HugosNotreDame I think he means Frollo.
could naybody tell me if Quasimodo and Esmerleda actually existed? and that scene when he says why was i not made of stone like you? really made me feel sorry for him in a big way
They never existed
I really think he was 90% inspired by interacting with John Hurt in The Elephant Man. This isn't one of his best performances, but decent.
🕯️🕯️🕯️🕯️
there is no "frodo" in this film !!!
For all the people who judge people based on their favourite characters: No.
@t5y665yrty56
Wooh, this isn't lord of the rings!

I like Frollo's rob)) sexy)
Isn't he beautiful?
2:53 - 2:57 Aw...
@t5y665yrty56 Frodo!? FRODO!?
@t5y665yrty56 LOTRE DAMME?
