Why the hell is "this so....80's"? The movie's setting is France during 15th century; the characters are all clothed in 15th century attire; the movie is based on a novel published in 1831; the soundtrack sounds medieval....what makes this movie "so...80's?! Stupid-ass comment.
DAMN. I was going with the theory that as time progresses, the portrayals of Esmeralda get stronger. This one takes a step back, though- the 1956 one is far, far stronger.
That would be dancing? Are you kidding me? She's just walking around and twirling, she's not even hitting her tambourine on time, not even the clapping is on time. Moreover, she's clearly dancing unwillingly, I mean look at her face. In the novel, not only does Esmeralda dance to gain money and survive, she does it because she loves it: she's cheerful and joyful, like she's in love with the life, whilst this Esmeralda is always serious, she's insecure and like afraid of everything. Who would be entertained by such a thing? If you can call it performance...They are charmed just because she's beautiful, she could just stand there and being admired, like a model.
Actually, no - the first film version of "Notre-Dame-de-Paris" was in 1905 and Henry Vorins played Quasimodo. Then there came the 1911, 1917, 1922 (with Booth Conway as Quasimodo) adapations, but as far as I know - the earliest surviving film version is Lon Chaney's 1923 version. :)
@peach93cc Just had to say she's named Esmeralda because of her amulet that is embroidered in green glass beads. She never says that is her actual name
Fan fact: Dancing publicly was hella provocative for a woman back in the time. So it's a nice touch of the movie which portrays that she was forced to dance and she is more modest at her clothing and moves.I just wish they have made her more emotional and into the rythm. I love how the movie has sticked to the book but i historical accuracy as well that makes sense for the plot.
indeed. poirot is probably the cutest detective ever. although i liked peter ustinov as poirot in Death on the Nile, the only face i can picture when thinking of the character is Suchet's. very very cute, while here... nasty ...
@ragweedtd she's not supposed to be though.She's supposed to be dark and beautiful.This Esmeralda is beautiful alright,but not dark. And she's wearing such...glamorous clothes considering she's just a gypsy....
@GekkoKamen .........BUAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! well i wasnt the only one who thought it you know ..It was just the dance that threw it off but im not complainin bout the movie....SHHEEEESSHH :p
@MademoiselleMary100 First of all, she's white and all though Esmeralda was french, she's described as tanned. The actress looks way to old to be Esmeralda and her dance is the most depressing thing I've ever seen.
Esmeralda looks too white, young and inmature. The 1956 Esmeralda was perfect! This Esmeralda sucks, her dance is shitty. When I watched the 1956 dance I was in a trance. Not only was her dancing wonderful but also her voice was gorgeous. When they make Notre Dame movies, Esmeralda's dance sequence must be amazing and addicting to watch just like the 1956 version.
Wow, her dance wasn't even a dance it's some chick taking steps. She looks veyr mopey. I'm very disappointed with this Esmeralda. But i have decided to watch all versions and I have to thank the uploader for putting them up. :)
@yaoilovertash It's actually a central point of the original novel! She is actually a daughter of a french woman who's baby was stolen from her- that's the irony of the whole plot, conflicting Frollo's beliefs.
@Nefus2 Correct me, if I'm wrong (I really don't know for sure. I haven't even read the book yet), but I saw many comments which say her skin isn't right (so you can tell, it's a pure coincidence that I took your comment for this). I believe, I read somewhere that Clopin "stole" Esmeralda out of a house or swapped her with a beautiful child out of a rich(er) house. So it could be her real skin color, couldn't it? Just a question, no offending...
Yes,she was adopted by gypsies. Basicly Romanis were racists towards Quasimodo like everyone else,so they gave him away and took Esmeralda in his place.
@Aerodil No no, I understand that part. But I was looking forward to a well choreographed dance performed by this actress and was quite disapointed since Esmeralda is well known for her dance which is supposed to be as enchanting and beautiful as she is. Take the 1956 version for example, I'm a girl and if I was a guy I'd be so turned on by that HAHA! This dance was disapointing, it's like watching a boxing match but the boxers decide to play patty-cake instead, you know what I mean? :P
4:28 - 4:38 Okay, just about everyone in France are jerks. Quasi isn't that ugly, he actually looks a lot better than all the deformed horror movie villians.
If you know about HISTORY, you should know, is a gipsy dance and is based on the 18th century, try to watch the original movie just to get better understanding.
@HypotheticalMuffins Lol. Wonder why they even started making this film when they didn't bother get even the essential elements anywhere close to believable and correct.
She is certainly pretty, but in my opinion she is a little bit stupid.I mean the penalty for disobeying Frollo was severe, and she hardly protested at all! And, I will be honest, the actress DOES not look 15/16.
@DemonheartBreakers lol i knoww it was suckish.....i think they didn't really know what a good dance was back then.....or they might have just liked her for her beauty....and i think she was not very beautiful....her hair is soo messed....only her skin is fair....there are soo many beautiful women than her
However she had a southern appearance with golden tan, black eyes and black hair. A look that one can confuse with the Romani look but still an European appearance.
i agree with you, she has such a lovely dress, the colors of the earth, blue and green.
This is so... 80's.
Why the hell is "this so....80's"? The movie's setting is France during 15th century; the characters are all clothed in 15th century attire; the movie is based on a novel published in 1831; the soundtrack sounds medieval....what makes this movie "so...80's?!

Me encanta el vestido que lleva la señorita Down :)
No habia visto esta película, gracias por ir subiéndola
DAMN.
I was going with the theory that as time progresses, the portrayals of Esmeralda get stronger. This one takes a step back, though- the 1956 one is far, far stronger.
ikr she was the best
that isn't called dancing, that's called jumping around hitting a tamburine.
Holy hell, i cannot BELIEVE that Anthony Hopkins is playing Quasimodo. o.o Excellent make up.
I'll say. You can't even recognize him.
That would be dancing? Are you kidding me? She's just walking around and twirling, she's not even hitting her tambourine on time, not even the clapping is on time. David Suchet is quite prominent here years before Agatha Christie and other TV Dramas
Good video.
I'm glad that in this version they didn't forget the crooked leg-detail. I think It's called "crooked" anyways.
She is beautiful.
I like Esmarelda's dress!
@peach93cc Just had to say she's named Esmeralda because of her amulet that is embroidered in green glass beads. She never says that is her actual name

GRANDE ANTHONY HOPKINS COMO CUASIMODO.
Is THAT Anthony Hopkins? the power of make-up...
Omg Yes !!!!!!
I´m not sure, if I like this version.
Disney Quasimodo was so cute, and Esmeralda was so Fearless (and black).
She can't even keep in time with her tambourine...
Pierre is cute in this version
Pause at 2:26...that is clearly modern polyester vest!
indeed. poirot is probably the cutest detective ever. although i liked peter ustinov as poirot in Death on the Nile, the only face i can picture when thinking of the character is Suchet's. very very cute, while here... nasty ...
@ragweedtd
she's not supposed to be though.She's supposed to be dark and beautiful.This Esmeralda is beautiful alright,but not dark. And she's wearing such...glamorous clothes considering she's just a gypsy....
@ragweedtd thats because in the book she isn't really a gypsy, she was kidnapped at birth.
P.s Black hair and black eyes described in novel.
Esmeralda is all Wrong.
Agree.
What is the soundtrack at 5:46??
I so wanted this movie to have the subtitles in Portuguese or Spanish.
esmerelda is very pretty
@GekkoKamen .........BUAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! well i wasnt the only one who thought it you know ..It was just the dance that threw it off but im not complainin bout the movie....SHHEEEESSHH :p
that one wasnt the original there was a silent one in 1923.
Djali is the only character they got right
i'm curious to know what you would call a dancing. lol.
From what I remember, Esmeralda's mom was supposed to be Spanish...
no, she's French. But we don't know anything about her father
@maham21jan I'm from Gyspy ancestry and we actually mad it to Liverpool :O We were travellers after all ;)
@MademoiselleMary100 First of all, she's white and all though Esmeralda was french, she's described as tanned. The actress looks way to old to be Esmeralda and her dance is the most depressing thing I've ever seen.
And the actress even not close to a tanned South-European.
@psychodamned
LOL! OK but you didn't start off in Pakistan did you :P
Who cares how bad a dancer she is - she's hot and that's really all which matters!
Esmeralda's dancing could've been done better.
@AustralianWild read the original novel
actually the first one was in either 1909 or 1911
the dress esmeralda is wearing reminds me of a joke my brother and his friends made up in band class. can anyone say A flat?
Esmeralda looks too white, young and inmature. The 1956 Esmeralda was perfect!
This Esmeralda sucks, her dance is shitty.
When I watched the 1956 dance I was in a trance. Not only was her dancing wonderful but also her voice was gorgeous. When they make Notre Dame movies, Esmeralda's dance sequence must be amazing and addicting to watch just like the 1956 version.
@DavidDoesntLikeDogs
her eyes are sapposed to be green, even in the book
that's why her name is Esmerelda(emerald in french)
No no no, her eyes are black in book, I just read it
Wow, her dance wasn't even a dance it's some chick taking steps. She looks veyr mopey. I'm very disappointed with this Esmeralda. But i have decided to watch all versions and I have to thank the uploader for putting them up. :)
@yaoilovertash It's actually a central point of the original novel! She is actually a daughter of a french woman who's baby was stolen from her- that's the irony of the whole plot, conflicting Frollo's beliefs.
what abeatiful face izmiralda
What's the name of that music
@Nefus2
Correct me, if I'm wrong (I really don't know for sure. I haven't even read the book yet), but I saw many comments which say her skin isn't right (so you can tell, it's a pure coincidence that I took your comment for this). Yes,she was adopted by gypsies.
Basicly Romanis were racists towards Quasimodo like everyone else,so they gave him away and took Esmeralda in his place.
Really is that it. At least disney gave her a pole.
@Aerodil No no, I understand that part. But I was looking forward to a well choreographed dance performed by this actress and was quite disapointed since Esmeralda is well known for her dance which is supposed to be as enchanting and beautiful as she is. damn 1939 film blows all the ones recently made away-
I cannot believe they could mess this up heh.
i think its the 1939 version. but the most real version compared from victor hugos book is 1956 version
Gypsy's are from Romania. They have there origins from pakistan and sometimes spain.
@DemonheartBreakers this was filmed in 1982,long time ago,no such thing as hip hop back then
4:28 - 4:38 Okay, just about everyone in France are jerks. Quasi isn't that ugly, he actually looks a lot better than all the deformed horror movie villians.
esmerelda clearly has two left feet.
If you know about HISTORY, you should know, is a gipsy dance and is based on the 18th century, try to watch the original movie just to get better understanding.
In the book she was 16
Erm... I'd really like to know what they thought when they cose Lesley-Anne Down to play Esmeralda....
That woman is SO out of place....
@DemonheartBreakers Well to be honest that was about as sexy as it got in the 15th century
Esmeralda should be a bit more tann. O.o
and young.
agreed
@HypotheticalMuffins Lol. Wonder why they even started making this film when they didn't bother get even the essential elements anywhere close to believable and correct.
@psychodamned
LOl! I'm from Pakistan and I've never heard of any gypsy going as far as france....sounds pretty ludicrous to me.
She is certainly pretty, but in my opinion she is a little bit stupid.I mean the penalty for disobeying Frollo was severe, and she hardly protested at all! And, I will be honest, the actress DOES not look 15/16.
aye...the disney version danced better.
This is kind of similar to the Disney movie
@DemonheartBreakers lol i knoww it was suckish.....i think they didn't really know what a good dance was back then.....or they might have just liked her for her beauty....and i think she was not very beautiful....her hair is soo messed....only her skin is fair....there are soo many beautiful women than her
Watching her try to swish her skirt in that strong breeze is mild infuriating...
This is a very pretty Esmeralda but she could be darker
woow...Esemerelda's dance was....kinda sucky............And they all liked her
@DemonheartBreakers What kind of dance would you have expected in 1471??? Breakdance??? Geez...
Just because I don't want to respond to all of these. Esmeralda is not a true gypsy she was just raised by them. So no she shouldn't look like a gypsy
However she had a southern appearance with golden tan, black eyes and black hair. A look that one can confuse with the Romani look but still an European appearance.
@ragweedtd In the actual book she is white. She was kidnapped by gypsys as a baby.
7:27 😦
esme was no gipsy
I like the disney version better
hottest Esmeralda ever
That's the laziest esmeralda dance ever, she really put zero effort into that
LOL oh my, Esmerelda is a terrible dancer. . .X-P
or maybe not...
@MademoiselleMary100 No, she looks like she's about 25 years old and should get on grip on her life.
I think it would be cool if Tim Burton did a remake of this and have Johnny Depp be Quasimoto.
Mejor baila mi perro
🥩🥩🥩🥩🥩🍝🍝🍤🍤🍤🍤🍤🍤
boooooo .... I like the movie but here Esmeralda is a wasted dancer ! ... nothing comparable to the 1956 movie !!!
@England5is5the5best not nice.
@AustralianWild This is crap compared to the French musical.
