The Que Beleza Brasil! program is made possible by FIU’s Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center in partnership with Gene de Souza, producer at Brazilian Nites and host of Café Brasil on 88.9FM WDNA. Funding comes from LACC’s US Department of Education Title VI Grant, and the generous support of Dr. Jabal Uffelman.
Part of LACC's FLAC Lecture Series and LACC's Brazilian Studies Program of Excellence. This event is in Portuguese.
Moreno Veloso, son of Brazilian music icon Caetano Veloso, is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Latin GRAMMY winning producer. Moreno began singing at the age of three, improving his natural skills while learning how to play classical guitar six years later. Veloso made his songwriting debut in 1982 with "Um Canto de Afoxé Para Bloco do llê," which is featured on Caetano Veloso's album Cores, Nomes. Moreno Veloso became a percussionist while still a teenager, touring with his father and Gilberto Gil before playing cello for Carlinhos Brown. In the early 1990’s this young and promising artist built his own recording studio, producing music for TV shows, films and plays.
After a live performance along with Alexandre Kassin and Domenico Lancellotti, playing Brazilian rhythms combined with electronic elements, they decided to make an experimental album, Music Typewriter, with famed producer Andrés Levin. The record was a big hit in Brazil, US and Europe, and was followed by Lancellotti +2's Sincerely Hot in 2003 and Kassin +2's Futurismo in 2007 concluded the original trilogy.
In addition to his own work, Veloso worked with his father, both on the road and in the studio, producing three records for him, including 2007’s Cê and 2012's Abraçaço, both Latin GRAMMY winners. After 13 years, Moreno released his sophomore recording, Coisa Boa, in September of 2014. In 2018 he joined his father and two half-brothers Zeca and Tom for the Ofertório tour and live album, received with great commercial and critical acclaim.
