I used to play with a group of buddies, around ten of us. We had taken over that one one-entry neighborhood with the plaza in Louisville. I had become our medic and chef, should’ve been the red flag for my group. I had snuck in a mod to let me break down bodies and process the meat. I had renovated two apartments into a bar and kitchen with rec room. The walk in freezer had a secret back room where I processed the zombie corpses. Because of my cooking skill and medical skills, I could use foraged herbs to ensure no one would fall ill from our unconventional meat source. It was going good for a month until they realized they never saw me go to the dumpsters to get rid of the zombie bodies. They found my backroom. Most of them were amazed they hadn’t died yet, one demanded my head, the others questioned why no one fell ill. I pointed out my skills allowed me to do so and provide meat to the group, along with materials. Two guys swore off any meals I cooked, demanding that they’d eat canned goods, crops, foraged food, and stuff they made. Everyone else gave it a chance as it had been done for a month. Trade off? I was always monitored and had to let my avatar get “injured” so others could raise their medical skill.

I play with my brother and our mutual friend, who sets up and maintains the server/mods. He constantly reminds us how grateful he is to have games to play with us, especially since COVID. This one is extremely popular amongst us, and we get tired of it, but inevitably come back and think, "why did we ever leave?!" We're older fellas, so it can be hard to find those friend groups who actually have time to play, and dedicate time to enhancing each others' experiences. It's a special relationship that is often taken for granted in youth.

It has been VERY difficult getting groups of people to play long term together in zomboid. I think its because the game just takes so long to update to a meaningful extent. and the multiplayer servers that do exist are too unrealistic and crap. After build 42 comes out i am gonna attempt to put together a group of friends to build a colony though. Zombie apocalypses aren't very fun when you know you're utterly alone. we are social creatures, and we need more opportunities to express that together in the game

Any of these sandbox survival games like PZ , 7Days , etc are hard to play in server multiplayer cause time keeps moving when you're offline. Especially in this game where the passage of time greatly affects what loot is left on the map. Playing in a small group who will only play together is doable though.

I played with my brother for 100+ hours last year before we got bored, and the zombies were always a factor, specially in the late game with higher county of zombies and when we moved to Louisville. I only managed to play so much because of Co-Op. The Singleplayer gets stale super fast, since there is no objective in the game other than survive, and it gets annoying after a while if you manage to become self sufficient

Well lets just say after a few hours of play was almost raided as I was afk getting prepared to sleep and get off I start hearing random mics come through audio...
Like seriously this is why I generally prefer only single to co-op games cause the multiplayer community for most games ruin the love and feel of the game.

    • @MsHojat
      @MsHojat 4 місяці тому +2

I'm not sure what you mean. Most servers have PvP disabled. Most servers have safehouses that other people can't loot from (or oftentimes even enter). Zombies become a non-factor if you choose to not engage with zombies. This will occur offline or online; it's easy to survive avoiding zombies be it offline or online, and it's easy to survive avoiding players.
That being said, if you're talking about a challenge, that depends on the server settings and how spread out people are. If everyone is all in one faction sharing everything and there's lots of players and lots of mods that make things easier then yes there might be less challenge. A lot of people don't want a challenge though. They want to craft and cook and RP.
If you want a challenge it isn't too hard to find servers with high pop, zombie respawn, scarce loot, low/no loot respan, occasional sprinters or CDDA zombies, less starting trait points, more rare items or stuff to do with high skill level, etc.
None of what you said really makes much sense for Zomboid.

I had a private server for my friends a year ago. It was a long run server and I rebuilt an abandoned residence with my one friend and started a new life down there with her.
We played for two irl months, nearly 3, straight. We play very similar and she's a massive weather nerd. While I may not know all the things she knows, I love weather all the same, so it was super cool just seeing her nerd out over stuff I appreciate. The amount of bonding and alone time the game will offer you, and the experience you get out of playing with someone you mesh greatly with, is spectacular. I largely did the workshopping, and cooking. She eventually did the crops and I'm not sure offhand what else she was doing.
Ultimately, we built this amazing 2 story cozy house from nearly scratch. Carpets, plaster, plumbing and all. Really proud with how the place turned out. We started collecting cars and I was collecting humvees to maintain/improve and armor up. We taken up lil hobbies which made the whole experience endearing.
We only stopped after the plateau occurred with progression. We played until January in the game, I believe. In either case, I intend to gather all my friends together again when the crafting overhaul update drops. I just need more content late game to keep myself entertained.
If feasible, do find a buddy you can just homestead and play with back to back. If you're very lucky and find someone you can mesh fantastically with, you'll have an amazing time like none other.

Yeah, I taken over the abandonded town in the far south.
We pathed out roadways into there, introduced a massive wall, also dealt with our own slowly brewing horde problem. It was like something out of a TV show. Day by day, we tended to have traffic going in and out of there, and over time, zombies would start following the noise to where we lived. Eventually, it became a horde and we had the one resident in the community get bit unexpectedly. We had a last stand scenario where she ran around on foot trying to stabilize the ground situation as I was on the roof with an M60, just ripping hundreds of zeds.
At the end, there were so many corpses. We ended up using the lawnmower mod we had on, to just mulch the corpses down because it was such a mess. Being the server mechanic where I repaired people's cars and did metallurgy was just pure awesomeness.
The amount of downtime entertainment that existed as well, was nice. She was super invested in listening to all the radio stations and surveying the weather station. We wanted to just absorb all the lore feasibly possible.
I had other friends on the server living in separate places, and consequently, we all did some trade every now and then.
Man, the amount of memories we made on that session was truly something.
Alas, glad you enjoyed reading what I wrote! I hope others can see how much they should try and experience this. It's hard, but if you can muster people/or find the right person, the game is fantastical.

With build 42, one thing I want to see and participate in is a server where everyone plays as a different member of the same village. I wanna be the village blacksmith, hammering away at making the metal pieces that my fellow villagers need to do carpentry or the like. Build up the village from the ground up. A collection of tents, maybe even crude shacks, up and up until it resembles almost a small medieval town. I think that would be very satisfying personally.

We had our own big house base. Decorate it beautifully and went out to look for loots and explore new map expension mod while covering each others back. Sometimes full squad, and sometimes, we split into 2-3 groups on different locations.
Each of us have certain skills too, one guys focuses on mechanic, another is carpenter/farmer/plumber and the list goes on. So we have to communicate to each other to get something done.

Though it is really worth it when it works as intended. I bought the game just to play with other people, so I still hope that devs will keep on improving the multiplayer experience.

We've had a server just for us and recently we had a server where we taught a lot of our friends how to play. From collecting cars and fighting over dibs, to our costume collection which led to a raid of the mall, not for supplies but for more clothes, to the constant, comical deaths of some people...these fun things only happen when we all play together. I tend to love decorating the base with a bunch of different things. When ever my friends get back there is always new things that make them ask "why" and it's simple, I saw it and I wanted it. But the biggest thing that's always my #1 thing to take back to base is mannequins, I love collecting them to just show off different outfits but it apparently has become an obsession and my friends question me. Every time they come back even if they were gone 5 mins there is 2 new mannequins wearing some "questionable" outfits next to someone's bed, but we all get lonely some times. If we ride in the same car and they see it they will try tossing it out but ik where I placed them so it's hard to get rid of them without me knowing.

A few months ago I decided to try out a multiplayer server and it completely rejuvenated my love for the game. The world feels more 'Alive' and random encounters with other players really make a more immersive experience. One of the best aspects of playing on a hosted server is that server staff keep the mods constantly updated and balanced. Not having to spend hours picking out the right mods and just being able to play feels good. Also I've discovered soo many cool mods I didn't know about by playing different servers.

When I first started playing this game years ago, it was with a group of friends on a local server. We fought and learned our way through Muldraugh for dozens of hours, and it was the most fun that I ever had in the game. Eventually, they all stopped playing, and I just...kept playing alone. Over 1k hours later of many characters and scenarios, and I'm still playing alone on occasion. I rarely die anymore, just get bored and restart with new mods, settings, scenarios, etc. I kind of gave up on the idea of getting my friends to play again, and just kept to myself. But after watching this video, I think finding new people to play with could be the spark needed to rekindle my love for this game. So if any of you out there are looking for a guide or an experienced companion, I'll be here. Lost somewhere at the bottom of the comment section. XD

You guys play so nicely together. Hearing what you initially said made me remember my old self playing PZ. For 2 years I played alone, I didnt think about it much but it was nice, Then watching clips of friends playing together made me realize what my real reason was when I started to play PZ, it was to play friends with. So I started to play with people on discord, I dont think Im a shy person, but I normally dont talk on mic because I hate awkward silences. But I also hate typing so it was a long process of forcing myself to talk and communicate on the mic until I got comfortable. Now I play with my classmates irl friends and its by far the best game of Zomboid I had in two years

Also since they're new to PZ, they treat me like "the veteran" because I have experience. Its so fun to be the group leader, coordinating and instructing them what to do and see them actually do stuff as a team is such a blessing. Explaining them do's and dont's carefully so they don't get overwhelmed. Its been 2 weeks of our server running now and I'm glad to see them improve all the way.

As per the lovely MrAtomicDuck's offer to share Project Zomboid Servers, allow me a brief moment of your time to share with you the Serious Survival Roleplay Server (or SSR for short).
    The SSR is your typical Project Zomboid experience, except with two major changes;
The first is that everything is done with the addition of a Text Based Roleplay Narrative in mind. Maybe you want to play as a Burger Flipper of Spiffos in Rosewood, struggling to survive in a world full of the dead. You meet a few other survivors, share your name, and begin to become an asset as a cook- an essential skill few would realise the value of until the zombie apocalypse we find ourselves in. You make friends, connections, enemies- and work together to survive in a world of brutal difficulty.
Which leads me to the second major change, Brutal Permadeath for your character. If you die, that is how your character died.
Say you get bitten, the only way the infection spreads, and you know time is running out now. You spend your final few days saying a goodbye to everyone, before finally succumbing to your end. Your story will live on in the hearts of the other survivors, as you share a tear for the Burger Flipper you've come to cherish.
Then, when you're ready, you make a new character, with a new story, and a new narrative to build and unfold.
We recently just went through a world refresh, so everything is still new. And with an incredibly friendly and helpful moderator team, any questions or concerns you may have can easily be discussed! And with a Whitelist process as well, we try to minimise trolling and cheaters as much as we can.
So please! Come check out our promotional video, either by the link below or typing "Serious Survival Roleplay - Project Zomboid" into your search bar if you're unsure, and come meet the growing community of 100+ people all roleplaying their own survival story! Trust me when I say, it adds a whole new life to a game filled with the dead.

I was 10 hours in I was struggling and losing interest in the game. When I joined the server and asked for help, some folks really made the experience more enjoyable. It was really cool to see folks to visit my home to say hi or even drop something off to help. A small server/community with active members.

But... 33% of PZ players play some form of multiplayer. It's the 32-player servers that are unpopulated, but a lot of people play with a partner or a small crew, which TBH is my preferred way to play, too. I've been playing with my partner for a while now, making good use of radios in-game to communicate realistically, and running missions together to Riverside to obtain survival gear. I'm running the server in the basement, and the game pauses whenever there's nobody logged in, so we only play when we both play.
Multiplayer is still a bit rough, though. Despite having the server running on dedicated, beefy hardware, on the local network with

I think it's fair to say you've found the proverbial, perhaps literal, diamond in the rough there with SciFi Ginger! Also from this video I've learnt that you can drink wine by the glass in PZ, it still impresses me how many small details like that TIS have included! Also how rude, keeping the spoon for yourself like that! 😁
But seriously, for me personally I've always liked the idea of multiplayer, and specifically small scale co-op, in PZ but never really pushed myself to realise that idea. A large part of that is down to my own personal schedule, I have a general preference for games I can pause because "ooh squirrel!!" and I'm a massive social hermit these days. That and finding a server / group of players that matches my desired settings and mods closely enough to risk trying has not proven fruitful in the past, that goes for most online games though but especially zombie related ones. So I often find it easier to simply jump into a solo game and lose myself in the comforting isolation.
    What can I say, I'm weird 😁.

Just been hard trying to find people to play with.
I have a little server with a modest amount of QoL mods and only a handful of game changing ones. I'm based in East Coast US, but the other two people I play with are EU central time, so I'm basically playing solo still.
Would love to have a small group of about 4-6 people. Just a couple in each time zone so that each could have a group of players.

I actually do run a multiplayer server that has been up now for over a year, really active community and it has a story that I write for the server and it changes based on the players influence,
like a choose your own adventure deal and we've been running events every weekend since it started up.
It's more RP based but it is pretty relaxed all in all, people are free to come up with their own character and kinda build it from there within reason.
Multiplayer is an absolute blast, it is easily one of my favorite things about Zomboid and was one of the things I was waiting for when the game first game out years and years ago.
Plus, I never would've thought I'd be apart of such a wonderful community which was just the icing on top to an already great experience even with just friends in the beginning.

I played several times in coop, this is my personal experience:
When I'm playing solo, I play managing my time, i could say something like: Let's rest here for 4 hours reading this book, then I will watch TV and finally rest until morning. It's about risky management.
When I'm playing coop (usually with mods) we tend to do a more risky approach. Sleeping and passing time are not mechanics enabled ... So we loot a lot of weapons, clean a zone, get some cars, and everything we will need for making a megabase, and then we get bored, never finishing the project.

It's been private, whitelisted server setups, and the folks were all well vetted, but even then it was an absolute blast of a time running with people, helping with food and supplies,, maybe running strongarm for someone who isn't used to the game or the combat and helping them both get their hands dirty and learn which end of a crowbar to put to use? Priceless. The comradery, the team building, and the just good social fun is a great experience. Also, the build projects you can get into with large groups are mind-blowing.

I always wanted a Hardcore Project Zomboid Multiplayer server. A server that you start your character in, and that character is your only character, if you die, you are dead. No restarts, you are just dead. I could just imagine how sad it would be to lose one of your group members that you probably got to know for 5 real days, so you bury your friend and know that the person won't return. So having one, two weeks or a month till they restarting it's server so dead players can return could work for me. My thoughts on having a hardcore server, creates more of a survival instinct to the player and the role plays get a lot more hardcore.

A lot of them just leave games unfinished, we are very fond of finishing games after all. We are also not very fond of playing with randoms, I like that I know who am I playing with, or at least getting to know who. My ideal scenario of interaction is coming up to a huge set of apartments I have my sights set on clearing and running into another individual that have the same idea. We nod silently at each other, and clear the horde while having each others back. Then when it's all said and done, we nod again and go our separate ways.

love how the community works sort of like how all the big zombie franchises work. in the walking dead "fight the dead, fear the living" in those shows the zombies take to the side lines, while the discord and conflict between communities and the fellow survivors is where the drama is. people would rather rough it alone, than go through the trouble of finding a true ally.

Is the patreon server good to join if you haven't really played the game before? I've been wanting to get into the game but I like the idea of a multiplayer experience more than a single player one

The tough thing I found for playing with friends (besides finding them) was lining up schedules.
I have 3 other people that we tried to run a server with for a while, but we'd always run into schedule conflicts, because scheduling adults is really hard.
But whenever the stars aligned, it was an incredible experience. Having to work together in battle, getting those clutch saves on an ally in trouble, even just decorating a base together was so much fun.
Plus, me and the person who ran the server put a lot of work into customizing all the mods to make sure they were fine tuned to everyones tastes, adding things that everyone involved would like to enrich their experiences, something they could work towards individually, while also adding goals and planning out raids for everyone collectively to play together, like missions to different parts of the map. It was so great
We haven't played in a while though, I think everyone is just waiting for B42 now, which is unfortune, we never got to do everything I planned.

I would love to find a group to play with but I tried so many servers in the beginning. I was really excited for multiplayer but was disillusioned after a few months of looking for a server I could play on. So many were hardcore and I kept getting killed. When I looked for communities they were generally hardcore roleplayers with too many rules. Other servers were empty and others I got tired of getting to know people who only showed up a couple times. Finally, I play with a controller which makes me slower and is missing some functionality (cant interact with VHS etc ) However....your video has got me itching to try again so fingers crossed & Thanks for your great content xx

A Path Above server is a great community and adds so much to the game with the mods.

I actually started playin PZ solo, convinced a couple of my discord buddies to play CO-OP with me on a server I hosted and I haven't touched my singleplayer world since. Sometimes I'll log on by myself when they're not available or for whatever other reason, but playing with friends is absolutely my favorite way to play zomboid

i only play solo if my sister isnt available. we usually hoon round together on loot runs, i usually play mechanic/metalworking build and she is the lumberjack smashing zeds with an axe. she also lets me plan out the base exactly how i like it lol. its seriously so valuable to have someone to watch your back, you never know whats lurking.

Ì remember playing this back on Playstation 3 as demo and was sold by the Idea. U had less stuff but u had survival and zombies. I remember just keep on going and going and being drunk in some abandonded home after going through whole the map killing them. I found Katana Swords and cool armor and kept repairing it. Still to this day it didnt changed and it just gets better. I play alot of games and zombies is a huge part of it. In PZ u dont have a story u create your own and thats what fun about. Solo or with people the memories will stick with u how u died.... The longer u lived the longer the memories be.

When I had been a solo player for a while, I managed to finally convince my friend to buy the game and play it with me. We never ended up getting very far progression wise, and my friend and I didn't really have very similar playstyles. Two or so years later, I have a few friend group and managed to convince yet another one of my friends to try the game. We absolutely hit it off, and managed to secure a large base, gather tons of supplies, and now we even have a bunch of inside jokes related to events that happened in the game!
    "Pickaxe Joe cannot be stopped!"

I got a small group of buddies that I like to play with. Mainly people from school who I trust, but this video has inspired me to want to put myself out there into the community and finally play multiplayer.

i used to be head admin on zombie ash gaming's server (un until it shut down) and would also do events. here is two that prooved popular, a fishing tournament done over a week and the hunting tournament. basically both events works off how much weight the catches are. you have them hunt/fish until they get the perfect catch ie how heavy it is and register that one catch per day over the space of a week you then add the persons total and the player/team with the most weight wins.

I play with my friends, but always in a local host - never something online or large scale. Is it worth trying?
