The 70s were THE decade for music. No autotune. No digital mixing. It was from the heart.
Three singer-songwriters that I really hold in high esteem: Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and Harry Chapin. All three wrote so many timeless songs.
Let's throw in John Denver for good measure
Great list!
You really nailed it.
Preach!
I didn't see Croce or Lightfoot, but I saw Chapin four or five times. He was magic live.
I always liked the line "If you're going my way, I'll go with you". It's just a nice sentiment.
Agreed.
It's not really actually even. If one were to say
The narrator sounds as if he wouldn't consider changing course to stay on the same path. This is a bit of conjecture but if theu had any interest in them the narrator would know where they are going.
This song communicating more about independent by extension journey of stood discovery & growth. Yes that can certainly happen from other people but coming from oneself is equally if not more important l.
I love love Jim Croce. He's still on my playlist today. My whole High School cried when learned he died. Great reaction guys.🎼🎵🎶
Me too...yr old like me! What we would do without this music...
Croce will never get old. Such a wonderful artist. Gone too soon. RIP Jim.
Exactly! His image will always be that of him at his young age as we all remembered! What a great singer and songwriter!
Yes...I was 10 when he died...loved all his songs.
The guitar work by Maury is so beautiful. Some of his best.
Maury made an album titled Gingerbreadd. They only made 11,000 copies which were sent to radio stations to be played. It is a fantastic album with many great songs. Unfortunately Maury's album was lost in the shuffle when so much great music appeared in the early 70's. The story goes that Jim and Maury were a duo with the understanding that if one of them hit it big, the other would be his guitarist. Jim's deep voice was an instant hit , leaving Maury to play guitar next to Jim. If you watch any Jim Croce live appearances, the guy next to him is Maury Muehleisen. While traveling to an appearance they both died in a plane crash on September 30, 1973. What a shame to lose two such talents at the peak of their careers. I can only imagine the great music they would have produced had they not been on that plane.
Lex, listen to the lyrics.
Lex had "Time in a Bottle" as her number 1 song for June's reactions. It was obvious that this song touched her deeply also, like it has for many watching this video. A real pleasure and joy to watch.
I almost cried when I heard this song play in Django Unchained. Tarantino uses it in the "working" montage after Django accepts Schultz's offer to go into business together and finally starts earning a living as a free man. The whole sequence made me realize there's more to freedom than just being unchained: folks also need career opportunities and purpose to live their lives with dignity.
Agree. This is one of the best integrations of a song into a film ever.
So true. A reason to get up in the morning. A meaning to their life.
I think the same thing literally every time I watch that movie! The significance of “I got a name” for a recently freed man is so moving. As well placed in a movie as any song ever was!
Love Lex's reaction. Was 10 years old when this came. I'm an old man now, this song is how imagined my father speaking to me. I lost him at 9 years old. This song has aged with me. The years have added texture and color to it.
Lex's reactions are uncanny good.
Wonderful comment, You lost your dad just before this came out? Damn, rough. And you're not an old man yet, though prolly starting to feel it, lol. I was 18 when it came out.
Croce lost his own dad before he found commercial success. And then he died when his own son AJ was like 2. It's all so sad. But sort of inspiring, too.
agreed. she nailed it.
I lost my dad in 1973 and I was also 9 I know exactly what you're saying it iS our fathers message to us or maybe it's just our message to them God bless you and your Dad
It’s always so bittersweet listening to Jim Croce knowing that he left us way too soon.
My dad went to high school with him (Upper Darby HS outside of Philadelphia, same as Tina Fey, Cheri Oteri, and Todd Rundgrend). This song came out the day after he died. He was an amazing folk artist that left us way too early. "On the night of Thursday, September 20, 1973, during Croce's Life and Times tour and the day before his ABC single "I Got a Name" was released, Croce and five others were killed when their chartered Beechcraft E18S crashed into a tree during takeoff from the Natchitoches Regional Airport in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Croce was 30 years old." #phillyheart #phillysoul #phillylove #phillysmarts
Jim was going home to retire the next day. He was finished with the music industry and wanted to be a husband and a father to A J
Such a sad day (yet another small airplane crash)
Things I did not know. Thanks for sharing
@@kerrylewis2581 SAME, TY
They think the pilot had a heart attack and him being the only pilot on board, the plane crashed after takeoff. At least that's what I saw in a video. It also said he was on his way to a gig here in Texas. Don't know it's all true or not.
My favorite song from Jim Croce. I played his album until I wore it out and had to get another one. I love acoustic guitar and he was all in on it!
Please do more Jim Croce, guys ! .. He had so many wonderful timeless songs for such a terribly short career before his untimely death .. "Lovers Cross" is my favourite, but "Operator" is also extremely good .. They are both MUST listens !
Don’t talk to them they never reply 🙄
@@yenlard6683 Ya they do....they get thousands of messages. Can't answer them all, ya know.
Lover's Cross is a great song. ❤️
There's something in my eye...
@@hipsville Sure is ! .. So under-rated .. Would love to see some reactors cover it .. They would be knocked out by the fantastic lyrics and beautiful melody.
This is my favorite Jim Croce song.
Jim Croce is an absolute legend. His music is beautiful. Please do more from him.
A very pure & honest sound with no auto-tune or gimmicks. 100% genuine talent.
Jim's music is so inspiring. I wish he'd lived to enjoy all the success his music would bring him. RIP
I will never forget when my father introduced me to Jim Croce in the late 70's. This brings back great memories.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite songwriters. I would grant him an honorary "Southern songwriter" award for this one... it surely captures that soulful Southern feel, and it always makes me cry. Great song, great reaction! Thank you, Brad & Lex. Honoring Jim Croce's legacy.
Singer song writers imparting wisdom, it has a long history....Imagine, all the people living life in peace...
The memories from this song are surrounded by a great childhood and no worries in the world
"And I carry it with me like my daddy did". Being named after my father, I love that line!
R.I.P. Jim Croce. A real talent, lost too soon.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love Jim’s “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song”, “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” and “Operator”!!!
Lex: ‘Something your dad would teach you’, Lex is awesome!!
"I've Got A Name" by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox, who also wrote "Killing Me Softly With His Song"(Roberta Flack, Fugees).
gave a shout out in the comments for your suggestions.
@@madmann5373 thank you!
The Fugees covered it but Roberta flack used it as a time stamp for Greatness. Not that I don't like the Fugees version.
A very good interpretation by Lex.
Killing Me Softly was written by a woman after seeing Don McLean. At least the lyrics.
Good Reaction :^) ... Jim Croce was inspired by his new born son, so it makes sense that people hear a 'Father's Voice' in his music... The style of this song reminds me so much of John Denver. He could've sang a great cover version of this.
The 60s/70s singer songwriters are unmatched.
This song feels like a warm hug from your favorite relative. Meaning, reassuring and peaceful.
"Your dad singing to you", perfect quote. Beauty, trust, security, life's wisdom and love in a song.
This girl is SO connected to the soul of all music. This is a gift in and of itself.
My favorite from him. "They can change their minds but they can't change me" is a verse that is so profound. For all of those who have had a love change their mind, here's to you for not letting their change of mind change you.... 🥂 cheers
I love how Lex described how Jim makes her feel ❤️
A musician in a similar vein is RODRIGUEZ. " COLD FACT " AND " COMING FROM REALITY " are two albums he is famous for.
Some of you will be aware that a Documentary was made about RODRIGUEZ after he was found working on a building site.
In regards to JIM CROCE, he would be one of the most lamented musicians of all time.
The sadness and tragedy of his death, makes me choke with emotions and hold back the tears.
In 1973, when the News came through on Australian media that he had died in a plane crash, I was only 12 yrs old.
Jim had only just broken through into the Commercial World of Music.
His Hit songs were being played on 2SM radio in Sydney.
The word that Lex is looking for is ' engaging '
Jim's voice and story telling was very engaging.
Jim Croce one of the greatest singer songwriter ever, We miss you Jim.
One of the greatest songwriters in musical history. Jim Croce has songs that would make even the hardest prison convicts cry. Absolutely missed, and taken from us far too soon
Incredible musician, had so much more to give. RIP Jim.
This song just gives the best feels. Croce was terrific- underrated. Should be a R&R HOFer
Always loved this song and the smoothing affect it has on your soul. Miss Jim he was gone way too early. Love the reaction
The song was written by his guitarist, Maury Muehleisen(sadly perished in the same plane crash)
It was used in the 1973 movie, The Last American Hero about NASCAR driver Junior Johnson
Theme
Follow your dreams regardless of your distractors
There are still a few more JC tunes to react to
Mentioned in the comments
What a tragedy and what could have been with Jim
His son, AJ Croce is still carrying on the musical legacy
UA-cam him
Song was written by Gimbel Norman / Fox Charles
Credits on the song show; Norman Gimbel, lyrics & Charles Fox, music.
Hmmm . . . Musixmatch says it was written by Gimbel Norman / Fox Charles.
I read Maury but you guys are most likely correct
Makes more sense as well
I knew it was not written by Jim
Darn internet!
Ed this song wasn't written by Maury. Maury wrote Salon and Saloon from the album named I've got a name. That was Jim's 5th and final album and was released after his death. Maury's song was the last one Jim ever recorded. What a loss of both of them. It's like the day the music died all over again.
"Like the fool I am and I'll always be, I've got a dream. They can change their minds but they can't change me..." my fave lyric.
Lex is always on target - I love her!
Nailed it! The day after Jim Croce died, (as I remember it) they played this song on the radio for the first time as his newest song. Too good.
Lex nailed the dad thing. You guys are getting really good at this from a fan. More from the genius croche please!
Lex is a treasure! She gets it in every way! Very in tune with the intent of a song! Well done, impressive.
Stone Temple Pilots' "Interstate Love Song" uses chords directly taken from here, and it's a nice repurposing in a different genre.
Jim Croce was a huge part of my youth. He was gone before I was born, but my parent's made sure I knew every word of every song.
Lex nailed it
The day before this single was released Jim and five others died in a plane crash on September 20th, 1973 he was only 30. I wish they would do a movie about his life.
You can tell by the beautiful smile on Lex's face what she thought about the song!
Lex has such a wonderful smile. No disrespect Brad, and her being with you obviously makes the smile possible. Keep up the good work.
I grew up on Jim Croce music and I thank my Dad for that every chance I get.
I love how Lexi nails every single songs emotion and meaning in the most obscure way
"We all have different dads..." Amen. I get that. Perfect response. :)
You really need to hit "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song".
I cried when I was a10 year old child when I learned he died . One of the greatest singer/ songwriters taken way to soon. Thanks for the reaction 🙏.
Love Jim Croce! So many great and timless songs.
Photographs and memories, Lovers Cross, Operator . Thanks guys! Love your reactions!
Another tearjerker EVERYTIME
'Dad singing to you.'
Wow nailed it!
Jim's music is timeless. I've been listening to him since I was a little kid, and now I get to see my niece and nephew also cherish his music. The world lost a great talent when we lost him, but as all other great artists that were lost too early we are blessed to have them for the time we did.
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud...great line....
You guys will think I'm crazy but it was so beautiful to me to see you listening to this and being so open minded to it I just cried. My dad used to play guitar and sing all of Jim Croce's songs back in the 70's and as kids we would all sit around him on the floor and listen to him sing and play. Those were different times and, like Lex mentioned, there was a friendlier and more relaxed energy to life back then and I think it comes out in this music.
One of my favourite Jim Croce. Cheers for reacting to it.
Best Line in this whole song they can change their mind but they can't change me
Love you guys. At 70, you make me laugh and feel young. Keep it up kiddos.
His songs are so amazing. And I especially like the guitar picking with Maury Muehleisen. Adds a whole new dimension.
Lex said it seemed like her dad singing to her. My dad did sing Jim Croce to me, and played the album for me. It's some of my best memories as a kid. I miss both of them.
I love Jim Croce, and this is one of my favorites! Great singer, songwriter, poet.
One of the best “father passing down to son” songs is Cat Stevens’ Father and Son
Not sure why, but this song made me tear up this morning. Heard this song 100 times before, but today it got me today.
I loved him I was on my way to school in the 9th grade and the announcement came over our local radio station. The world wept~~
This song worked so well in the movie Jango unchained. It fitted the Character perfectly.
' Lovers Cross ' is a great one by Jim...My favorite by him...He has so many great songs.
yes she nailed it, its like my dad singing to us
So many great songs from Croce. He & Cat Stevens are my greats to listen to.
I love it when Lex right-brains Brad.
Great take, Lex. Croce was a great singer/songwriter who is dearly missed.
Nailed it, Lex. It's an upbeat lullaby
All the Jim Croce song suggestions are terrific. Also listen to these two songs of his: Photographs and Memories, Tomorrow's Gonna Be a Brighter Day.
I adore this song. Jim was a terrific storyteller.
I've never heard anybody say a bad word about Jim Croce who's music is amazing
Hard Way Every time - should be your next Jim Croce :)
Yes,I get you, my Dad raised us with music with stories and stories with morals. We would roll our eyes…. but I’m glad for the memories ❣️
He only did like one album before he died but so many great songs, legend
The summertime music of my childhood. Love it!
Used to do this song on the streets of Vancouver in '78. Life and music took me in different directions later, but I still love it.
Thank you for all the Jim Croce songs you've listened to. He was an amazing song writer and his guitarist was amazing to. I can't even spell his name or say it right but look him up.
You gotta listen to some of his live songs to really see him playing the guitar and singing.
Outstanding. You guys could spend a month playing every song He recorded, and never play a bad one. Thanks Guys
My dad had a tape of Croce's greatest hits, and we didn't have a tape deck in the house (this was early 90's) only in one of the cars (we had a bunch of cars, though). So we'd sit out in the car and jam to that cassette. Some of my fondest memories, for sure.
Tarantino’s use of this song in Django was one of the most beautiful use of music in a movie ever. It was his most truly sensitive moments on film ever
I'm a Dad. I raised my two kids alone. I play guitar my son is a drummer and my daughter is a keyboard Wizz. We used to do this one. Croce was a great song writer and singer. Another great one gone way to soon.
Jim made every song seem personal. What a great story teller. He gave his heart to us in his music. They don't make many of them, but when you get the oppoprtunity to experience these artist ,you must treasure them.
Great tune... keep it up and ppl with give you crazy looks when they see your play list... From D'angelo to Jim Croce...lol
Beautiful song. One of my favorite sequences in Django.
I always enjoy seeing young people discover music I have loved for years. You guys are killing it. Keep it up!
Jim Croce's song's are meaningful, like they make you sit back and think,
Jim Croce is awesome. You should do more of his stuff!
LOVE this song!!!!!!!
One of the best songs ever
From my neighborhood, died way too young, another plane accident. Great song writer that just gets you right in the Feels 😢
In the movie The Last American Hero about Junior Johnson, this song plays at the end of it and it is perfect 💯👍💪👏👏.
Every time I hear this song I feel as though Jim Croce knew he wasn't going to be around forever. And whether he knew he'd die even before he made it big he knew his name would always be attached to what he'd done in life.
I concur with you wholeheartedly! I share the same feeling!
